Tw: implied death

Florida turned, swaying slightly and trying to steady himself, dull routine in his mind as he moved.

He'd danced with someone like this before.

Brilliant young man, eyes that lit up like the stars and a bright, curious personality, Florida loved him very much.

Loved.

His hands fell to his sides and he sighed, trying to block out the oncoming memory.

Not a day went by that Florida didn't miss him.

DC groaned softly, rolling over, what time was it?

He huffed, sitting up and glancing at the alarm clock next to him. He'd slept in. He paused, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. California must've gotten up before him.

He trudged into the kitchen where California was cooking, still very tired, wrapped his arms around California's waist and rested his head on California's shoulder.

"Dee?" California sighed, "I told you to go to bed earlier."

DC pouted, "I had work to do." He didn't need to look to know California had rolled his eyes, "I slept, didn't I?"

"I worry about you," DC chewed the inside of his cheek nervously, he hadn't meant to upset California, "but you're right, you're getting better at sleeping." California smiled, "Get me the plates, will you?

California had gone to bed around two hours ago.

Correction: California tried to go to bed around two hours ago.

The bed seemed so much bigger without DC, which led to a lot of tossing and turning as he struggled to get comfortable, missing the warmth his partner brought.

He eventually gave up, opting to find a book instead, beaming when DC finally stumbled in.

DC collapsed onto the bed the second he got close enough, not bothering to remove his suit as he crawled under the covers next to California.

California grinned, saving his page and setting the book to the side, "Dee- Dee-" he gently nudged the other, "love, you have to get changed-"

DC groaned, rolling over, "I can sleep like this-"

"No, no you can't." California replied, going through their closet.

"Toss me one of your shirts." DC sits up, removing his blazer.

"Oh really?" California turned to him, small smile tugging at the corner's of his mouth.

"Oh hush-" DC tossed his tie to the side and began unbuttoning his shirt, mumbling something California couldn't hear.

"What was that?" California asked smugly, passing the clothes to DC.

"It smells like you." DC replied, flush clear on his face.

"I love you too." California said, smiling as he laid down next to DC.

DC stood, pulling California's shirt over his head then leaning over to kiss the other, "I'm glad."

California's smile widened when DC lays back down, wrapping his arms around the other's torso, "good night."

DC sighed contentedly, running his hands through California's hair, "goodnight."

Their eyes welled up with tears as they stared in the mirror.

For the first time, it was them. It was them.

"You look beautiful rosie." They turned to see California smiling behind them, "Do you like it?"

DC laughed in disbelief, of course they liked it, it finally fit. "Yeah- yeah, I like it." They choked out, wiping their tears.

"I'm glad."

DC held his arms out, giving a shy smile and beaming when California accepts, pulling DC into his chest and planting a kiss on his cheek.
