Mending Fences

Robin was finally on the mend physically, mentally not so much. He had some aches and pains but Raven had worked overtime to get him walking before the stakeout yesterday. He had a flash back of watching Starfire walk into the tent and hearing her voice on the communicator. He thought he had something special with Starfire. She said she'd be with him if he quit fighting...but now she's gone. He sat on the edge of his bed, taking in everything.

Cyborg was in the kitchen, eating one last breakfast with Bee before she went back to Titans East. Bee sat in the sofa with her feet on Cyborg's lap. Cyborg was rubbing her feet through her socks while she ate cereal. He was trying to take in every moment with her since he wouldn't see her for a couple of weeks. She sat the bowl off to the side and closed her eyes.

"You're really trying to keep me here, aren't you?" Bee mumbled tiredly.

"You know it babe!" Cyborg whispered.

"I'm gunna miss you, Sparky!" Bee whispered.

"You better!" Cyborg smirked.

Starfire woke up in the tent with a little chill from the morning air. She pulled the sleeping bag tighter as she shivered but nothing quite helped. She looked around and saw the rest of the tent was empty. She got up, keeping the sleeping bag wrapped around her, and peaked outside of the tent. She saw Sam sleeping on the ground outside the tent. She suddenly felt regret for leaving the tower but going back didn't feel right. Starting to panic, she felt like she had no place to call her own. She knew she couldn't live in a tent forever and she didn't know if she could go back to the Titans. She thought about Robin, her Robin, that she left behind. He was probably worried. They probably told him, she was walking around with Sam. He probably hated her right now. She felt her breathing speed up right before Sam unzipped the tent.

"Are you okay!?" Sam asked alarmed by how fast she was breathing and the look of panic in her eyes.

"I made a mistake! I should not have gone!" Star wheezed as he grabbed her by the shoulders trying to calm her down.

"Take a second and breath." Sam said with a soothing voice. She complied with a shaky deep breath. "Now what do you mean?" Sam asked calmly.

"I should not have left the Titans..." Star groaned, "I have made the grave mistake!"

"Well, how can we fix it?" Sam asked trying to help.

"I do not know..." Star whispered feeling lost. "I had much anger and hurt. I felt alone, but they were my family like Frank is yours." Star explained.

"Let's take the day and think about it. We can find a way to fix it if that's really what you want." Sam said softly, trying to disguise the hint of disappointment, knowing she didn't want to stay.

"Many thanks." Star whispered as Sam nodded quietly.

"But I also don't think your feelings were invalid. You felt ignored, like they didn't love or appreciate you. Going back would be crazy..." Sam suggested as Star sat quietly. "If they loved you, they wouldn't have let you leave so easily. The way I see it, they didn't love you at all..." Sam whispered, making Star feel sick. She sat quietly, taking in everything he just said.

Back at the tower, Robin was supposed to go do physical therapy in the medical wing with Cyborg after Bee left. Cyborg had been waiting for a half hour and knew that physical therapy was the last thing Robin wanted at the moment. He figured he'd give Robin another ten minutes before he moved on to something else.

Beastboy walked past Robin's bedroom on his way to Raven's room. Something in his head made him stop at the door. Beastboy impulsively knocked before barging one the room. Robin was sitting on the edge of his bed, zoning out in thought. It had been a while since Robin had put on his mask and Beastboy still found his face unsettling. It was like walking by a building you grew up next to, only to find it burned down. You knew that sight wasn't normal, but you couldn't bring back the past. Robin looked up at Beastboy. His black hair was tousled from sleep and he wore a black T-shirt and light wash jeans.

"Aren't you missing PT?" Beastboy asked as he sat down on the bed next to Robin.

"Is that what time it is?" Robin mumbled.

"Robin, you've gotta go!" Beastboy started but Robin stayed sitting.

"You should probably start calling me Dick Grayson." Murmured Robing but Beastboy wasn't having any of it.

"Well, whatever you're name is, you should probably get your butt in to PT! Starfire isn't gunna come back for some cripple!" Beastboy snarked as he grabbed Robin's wrist and pulled him down the hallway. Reluctantly, they walked into the medical wing to see a surprised Cyborg.

"Oh, uh, hi! I didn't expect you guys..." Cyborg stated since he was getting ready to leave.

"Well, I'm here..." Robin mumbled as he sat down on the hospital bed. Beastboy ducked out as soon as he had delivered his package. He had another plan to contend with.

Knowing Robin had been rushed through the healing process, Cyborg started with a physical exam to figure out what he was actually dealing with. He could see that Robin's gate was still altered because his hip was a bad mixture of stiff and sore. He also still had some soreness in his rib cage from the previously broken ribs. Cyborg suggested some mild stretches and balance exercises to start off, but before he began, he paged Raven over his communicator.

Beastboy ran past Raven as she was walking toward the medical wing. She had a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.

"Hey where—." She started but was cut off.

"Can't talk now! Going to go win Starfire back!" Beastboy shouted as he ran down the hall. Raven shrugged with a small grin as she continued on her way.

Raven entered quietly as Cyborg pulled her to the side. They were out of earshot from Robin as Cyborg handed Raven a printed out paper full of stretches. "You have a connection with him. I need you to figure out if Robin is coming back from this." Cyborg whispered as Raven read through the worksheet. Cyborg wished her luck before leaving her to it.

Beastboy flew out of the window as a hawk. He flew to the park searching for the red tent in the homeless camp. He spotted the tent and swooped down before transforming into his human self.

"Starfire?" He called out as he walked up to the tent. She poked her head out with a smile.

"Ohh friend Beastboy!" Before flying out to give him a bone crushing hug.

"Starfire, I know I'm the last person who should say this to you, but you really need a shower!" He grunted through the hug as she let go self-consciously. She was still wearing her black sweats from two nights ago and her hair was pulled back into a messy braid under her grey beanie. "You need to come back!" Beastboy insisted.

"I can't!" Starfire mumbled self-consciously fidgeting with her sleeves.

"Why?? You know we won't you home!" Beastboy whined a little louder than he intended. Some of the homeless people in the camp turned to look at them. She tugged at his wrist to go walking with her and he obliged.

Once they were out of earshot Starfire began to speak her mind.

"You guys do not love me!" She blurted the words that slapped Beastboy across the face.

"Of course we do Starfire!" Beastboy shouted back immediately. "Do you think Robin would give up fighting for anyone else? Do you think we would have followed you out here last night, staking our the entire park for no reason? Star, everyone was in the park last night, even Robin and he can barely walk! Does that sound like anything but love to you?" Beastboy was out of breath from his speech but he certainly delivered. "You were there for me when I needed to be brought back, let me bring you back!" Beastboy whispered as he grabbed her shoulders and stared deep into her eyes. Starfire stood quietly with a building hope in her eyes. "Come home!" Beastboy begged. Starfire smiled and flew back to the tent to grab her backpack. He waited at the park bench for her to return so they could finally go home.

Robin watched Raven walk over to him and sat down next to him on the exam bed. She faced his side as he kept his eyes on the ground.

"Azeroth Metrion Zinthos!" She chanted as she left her body and tried to enter his mind. They had a previous connection but he wouldn't let her in. "Let me in!" Her soul commanded but his mind resisted. She tried harder but no luck. Finally her soul rested her hand on his chest and pulled his chin up to her face. "You will never feel better if you don't have the courage to try." She commanded as he let her in.

She saw snippets of memories from his childhood circus accident to watching his parent die. He was a snippet of Starfire kissing him in Tokyo and feeling the warmth of happiness that memory brought. She felt every time she rushed to him after an injury and every time he flung himself off of a ledge to save her. She felt the last good night they had where she fell asleep in his bed before everything went downhill. Immediately an overwhelming dread covered Raven. She felt every irritated snap and stressed out remark from the last few months. She felt the searing pain of the explosion on the R-cycle and the heat melting his flesh. She felt the shame he felt when Starfire pulled his body from the rubble. She felt every frustration of being trapped in his body without any movement for a week. She felt his guilt every time the news kicked on and Robin saw videos of Starfire carrying him from the accident, crying in a panic. Lastly, she felt his humiliation when he realized she was so much more than he deserved. She deserved more than a broken man, throwing up in a hospital bed. He wanted her to leave him so he could stop holding her hostage to his doomed life.

Raven's soul dig deep and she was in the middle of an overwhelming storm of thoughts and anxieties. Deep down in the middle of the storm was the child version of the Robin she knew and loved, sitting on the floor, next to his dead parents. She scooped him up into her hip and covered his eyes.

"I promise your life gets better than this." She whispered to the young Dick Grayson.

"How could it?" The boy asked with tears in his eyes.

"You create a family out of lost people, just like you. You love them, lead them, and give them a home. You even fall in love with one!" Raven whispered as if she was telling a lullaby.

"But she's gone." The boy whispered with the tears welling up in his eyes.

"Not gone, just lost. She needs to be found, Dick." She whispered in a soothing tone. "She needs to be saved." She spoke as she was pulled from his head. Both sat there on the bed, gasping from the experience.

"Thanks." Robin mumbled as he stood up gingerly, favoring his hip. Raven took his hands and helped him through the stretches and exercises.
