Meatball Subs

Starfire was walking through the park in the dark. It was a little past midnight and she came up to a homeless camp. There was four tents set up under a tree. A couple of men were huddled around a fire in a tin bucket. Suddenly, the fatigue of the day had hit her and a chill of the night air was biting at her fingertips. She walked over to the bucket and warmed up her hands next to one of the men.

"What's a lady like you doing out here at night?" One scruffy grey haired man asked as he move over for her. He wore a dirty green flannel jacket and muddy khakis.

"I am finding a new home." Starfire whispered.

"Ahhhh I understand that. Aren't we all!" He shouted with a chuckle. "My name is Frank." He said with a hearty chuckled. The other man at the bucket laughed. He was much younger, with a long red beard and a brown beanie. His attire was much newer but still dirty. He wore muddy jeans and a grey hoodie. He had soft blue eyes and a long scar along his left temple.

"I'm Sam" He state shyly and held out a calloused hand to shake. Starfire took it quietly with a nod.

"What should we call you, little lady?" Frank asked with a gruff voice.

"Star" Starfire whispered as she held her hands out to the fire. The flames warmed up the icy tips of her fingers.

"Nice name." Sam whispered and handed her some black knit gloves from his pocket. She slipped them on and noticed a small hole in between her right thumb and forefingers. She smiled at the gesture. This stranger gave her something when he had so little.

"Many thanks!" Star spoke softly with a smile. After a while, Starfire flew up into the tree to sleep on a sturdy branch. She used her backpack as a pillow and wedged herself in so she would remain out of sight. Drifting off to sleep, she thought about her old life and what she was leaving behind.

The next day, Robin and Cyborg went out in the T-Car to search the city under Cyborg's strongly worded suggestion that Robin stayed in the car due to his injuries. Cyborg could tell the every bump on the road hurt Robin which Robin refused to admit. The pain made him irritable, so he kept quiet during the search. They drove through all of Starfire's favorite places including the mall, the pizza place, and the pet store with no luck.

On the other side of town, Starfire woke up in her tree around 11 am. This was the first time should could remember sleeping in this late and it felt glorious. She peaked below to see Sam, sitting at the base of the tree, with a book in hand. She dropped the gloves onto his book from above and Sam glanced up in the branches.

"Oh hey monkey!" Sam noted, nonchalantly, closing his book on the knit gloves.

"What is it you do during the day?" Starfire asked as she flew down from the tree and sat, cross legged in front of him.

"This...maybe find some food too...but mostly this." Sam said casually.

"Do you need, the cash?" Starfire asked suspiciously in a mixture of confusion and worry?

"No—no! The world is too wasteful for that! Why pay for new when you can find what you need in the remnants.?" Sam rebutted as he pulled her to her feet! "I'll show you!" He spoke softly and lead the way.

Beastboy and Raven were searching the city. Beastboy was tracking Starfire's scent by being a bloodhound. Raven walked with him, reading the emotions of everyone they encountered. They started at the beach but found themselves wondering I'm circles through town. After a few hours, Raven and Beastboy made their way to the park. Following the scent, they came across the homeless camp. Raven walked up to Frank since he was outside of the tent.

"Have you seen a woman with green eyes and long red hair that goes by the name of Starfire?" Raven asked as Beastboy turned back into a human. Frank examined the two from behind his mask of wrinkles and grey hair. He knew they were referring to Star but he didn't know why she wasn't with them anymore. He also guessed that these two, as well as Star, were members of the Teen Titans group that he had heard a little about. It made sense why they were looking for her, but all he knew was she didn't want to be there anymore and Frank could respect that.

"I saw her walk by last night but she didn't stop." Frank lied but Raven knew immediately.

"Ok, thanks for your help." Raven said flatly and pulled Beastboy away before he inquired more.

"Dude! Why didn't you ask more?" Beastboy shouted as they got out of earshot.

"Because they lied. We know she was there but he was trying to deceive us. He was nervous so he's a much bigger less than we realize." Raven explained as she opened a portal. "Let's go back to the tower. I think I have a plan." She said before zipping them back.

Sam took Star to a rundown building in a bad neighborhood. It was a little after 3pm and Star was starving. They climbed in through a broken window and found a small table with mix-matched chairs. The room itself was full of rubble from the crumbling warehouse and abandoned machinery. He pulled out a grey stool for Star to sit on at the table and motioned to her to close her eyes.

"I'll be right back!" He whispered as he ducked out of the window and ran off. Within seconds, he was back with two foil wrapped sub sandwiches. He sat down in a light wood stained chair, across the table, and set the warm meatball subs in the middle. "Alright, open!" Sam whispered to Star. She saw the sand which and her stomach groaned.

"Many thanks!" Star exclaimed before opening the sand which. "Where did you acquire this?"

"I have a friend who works in sub shop across the street...He lets me take whatever doesn't sell well that day...Today is meatball subs!" Sam explained between bites. Star and Sam ate quietly. As they finished, Sam had many questions he had been dying to ask.

"So why are you out on your own? I know you're one of the Titans..." Sam asked gently incase it was a sensitive subject.

"Uhm..." Star pauses trying to find the right words. "Things are, as you say, difficult. Everyone is hurting and sad in many ways." She pauses trying to collect her thoughts. "I try so hard. I try to help, and keep up the happiness, but I cannot. I thought it was my home, but this is not what home feels like." She sat silently, looking at the balled up foil on the table.

"Ahh I see." Sam said gently. "I was in an orphanage before I was on the streets. I don't know what home is supposed to feel like, but I'd imagine it feels like the tent I share with Frank." Sam said as he got up from the chair. He tossed the two balls of foil into a trashcan across the room and held out his hand to Star. She took it as he led her to the stairwell of the warehouse. They climbed the stairs until they got to the rooftop door. The walked out to a makeshift green space filled with tomato, cucumber, and lettuce plants all growing out of various buckets and plastic bottles. There was a small storage shed in the middle and what looked like a water spout that came from the side. He pulled out a worn down pink lawn chair for Star and a blue one for himself as they sat close to the ledge. The view of the city was spectacular, even from this neighborhood. Star sat, feeling relaxed as she watched the skyline. Without realizing it, she fell asleep in the chair.

That night at 6pm, Beastboy, Raven, Bee, Robin, and Cyborg took the T-Car to the park. Beastboy, Raven, and Bee got out to surveil the park by various means. Cyborg and Robin stayed back for backup and to watch from a distance.

Bee flew around the park looking for any sign of Starfire. With no luck, she settled into a tree with a good vantage point of the homeless camp. Beastboy transformed into a squirrel and found and hid behind the tent they had spotted earlier to listen in. Raven used her portals to teleport from shadows until she found a good place to watch and read the emotions. Everything seamed normal for the time being and there was no sign of Starfire.
