Impasses

Raven woke up to an empty bed. The sun was shining in from her open window, with the crisp ocean air blowing in. Raven got out from the warm covers and donned her cloak to shield her from the chill. She floated over to the window and looked out at the sea. Not seeing Beast Boy, she let out a small sigh before flying out of the window. Reaching the rooftop, she saw Beast Boy sitting on the ledge with his legs dangling over the edge. Raven sat down next to him, with her legs crossed, she stared out over the ocean with Beast Boy.

"What are you thinking about right now?" Raven whispered.

"A whole lotta nothing..." Beast Boy mumbled tiredly.

"Doesn't sound like it..." Raven whispered flatly.

"I know..." Beast Boy started but Raven cut him off.

"Why lie?" She whispered, all the emotion was gone but there was still a hint of hurt in her voice.

"Because it's not my voice in my head. I'm not thinking anything. I can't think with it all." Beast Boy said, completely worn out. He laid back onto the cold cement, legs still dangling off of the cement ledge. Raven looked down at his face from under her cloak. The dark circles were darker than before and his green eyebrows were tensed as he zoned out at the sky. "Help me Rae." Beast Boy whispered almost inaudibly.

She closed her eyes with the sound of pain in his plea. She laid back next to him and grabbed his hand. "I promise I will." She whispered back with a firm conviction. The two watched the sky for the rest of the morning.

Meanwhile, Starfire woke up to a pained groan from Robin. He was sweating and more pale than usual. His blue eyes opened up to Starfire but they were dazed and struggling to focus on her face.

"Robin?" Starfire questioned as his breathing picked up the pace.

"Get Cyborg." Robin muttered through gritting teeth. Starfire shot off of the bed and flew out of the room. Moments later, Cyborg busted through the doors with Starfire floating behind.

"Aghhhhh!" Robin shouted in pure agony, gripping the hospital gown on his chest. Cyborg cut the gown open with a knife in his finger and saw his surgical incision swelling with infection. Cyborg gently touched the swollen pink skin which prompted a muffled scream. Robin's eye watered from the pain as he sucked in a sharp breath.

"Starfire, you gotta wait outside!" Cyborg said as he started to prep the room.

"...but...I could help?" Starfire offered weakly.

"OUTSIDE!" Cyborg snapped from the stress and Starfire sank out of the door. Robin turned his face to the door as Cyborg started to sterilize the surroundings. Robin felt the tears welling up on the fabric in-between his left temple and the pillow as he watched the door.

"Star..." Robin grunted as Cyborg looked down at his friend, who was barely conscious.

"She's just outside, Robin. She'll be back." He whispered as he pulled the curtain around his bed. Cyborg started to disinfect Robin's chest and then started his anesthesia.

Robin felt himself drift off from the drugs.

Raven took Beast Boy to her room. She laid Beast Boy on the floor and performed a spell on his mind to try to hear the voices that plagued his mind. Smoke raised around the room with voices erupting from his body.

"You're worthless." "Pathetic specimen." "How dare you call yourself a hero." "Raven is above you." "You don't deserve to live."

Raven blew out the candles around his head. She had heard enough from the dark voices. She looked down at his tired face to see his eyes meet hers. Raven's face was troubled by the phrases this poison used in his head. She tried a purification spell next but no luck. She relented and performed a serenity spell to quiet his brain. The major side-effect to the spell, made him sleepy so she carried him up to her bed.

"Does this help?" Raven whispered as she stroked his green hair.

"Yeah." Beast Boy mumbled with the first grin he's shown in weeks. "Thanks Rae." He mumbled through his grogginess. He snuggled his head in to her stomach and wrapped his arms around her waist. This was the happiest she'd felt in a while...if only it would last.

Starfire sat alone, on the floor outside the medical wing door. Her face was tearstained as watched the shadows shuffled under the crack of the door. Cyborg opened the door and looked down at the grounded Starfire.

"I'm sorry Star, for earlier. I didn't mean to snap..." Cyborg started but received more sadness than anger.

"Is he the okay?" Start asked solemnly.

"Yeah, I cleared the infection and put him on a heavy dose of antibiotics" Cyborg sighed, "He will be out for a while but you can go in now." Unable to fly, she stood up and sulked tiredly to Robin's bedside. She sat in the chair beside him and laid her head on the bed next to Robin's arm. She fell asleep from the fatigue of the day.
