I Quit

Raven and Beast Boy pulled away from each other in the dark room. It was a lot for Raven to process at the moment but it was like rediscovery something familiar. Her heart was pounding but so was Beast Boy's. She stared into his emerald eyes with wonder. Her chest felt warm, almost as if she had just sipped some hot tea. She could feel the heat rising into her cheeks as Beast Boy eyed her nervously. Neither Titans were sure what the next move was and both shared the nervous shakiness that accompanied their clasped hands.

Sitting up was difficult for Robin but he was pushing himself through the pain. He was studiously circling everything suspicious the photos. Every tousled piece of dirt was circled by a red felt-tipped pen. Robin's hands were shaking from the effort to stay upright but his mind was on fire with productivity. He was exhilarated with life from this small project Cyborg gave him. Robin took in a sharp breath as he turned over the page to a newspaper article about his crash. The front page was a large photo of a distraught Starfire, carrying his limp and bloodied body after pulling him from the ruble. He stared at the picture for a very long time. He studied Starfire's face intently. He had never seen such a look of pain on his favorite alien. He slumped back with a pained grunt, gripping the newspaper tightly. A wave of emotions hit Robin all at once. A small bit of dizziness overcame him.

Cyborg came in right as Robin exhaled uncomfortably. Robin didn't realize he had visibly paled. Cyborg studied his friend and instinct took over as he grabbed the bucket and held it under Robin's chin in the blink of an eye. As if almost on cue, Robin threw up, shaking from the pain in his ribs. Cyborg sat and waited for Robin to finish puking before pulling the bucket away. "Owww." Robin's hazy voice groaned as he slumped back into the bed.

Robin leaned his head as he watched Cyborg clean up the bucket in the sink. "Don't push yourself so hard, Bird Brain!" Cyborg scolded quietly with an irritated scoff.

"Why do I do this to myself?" Robin whispered to Cyborg.

"Because you don't know how to quit..." Cyborg mumbled without thinking.

"Maybe I need to..." Robin sighed with a painful effort.

"Woah, what? That's not what I meant! You'll recover, Robin. It'll just take some time!" Cyborg spoke defensively.

"Look at this article. Look at Star. Look at the pain in her face. That could have been her, not me!" Robin's voice rose to a yell.

"Oh come on now! That's the risk we all accept. It's not your fault. Shit happens man!" Cyborg spoke sternly.

"I did this to her and I did this to myself! Cyborg, I need to quit!" Robin shouted panting. His knuckles were gripping the bedsheets and his body was shaking.

"Woah man, calm down. Are you sure?" Cyborg asked surprised. He pulled up a stool and sat next to the bed.

"It get's harder to put your life at risk when you start to have a life to live..." Robin started to mumble. "For so long, I was focused on escaping and avenging. My will to live was tied around my need for justice. I'd lost so much that I didn't know...I just didn't know what people could mean to me. Maybe it's time to find out what normal people do with their lives?" Robin resigned from his monologue with an exhausted sigh. Cyborg simply nodded his head with a grunt. He wasn't ready to watch his best friend quit, but he also knew Robin's road to recovery would be a lot easier as a civilian.

After some time, Cyborg gave Robin his pain medication and watched him drift off to sleep.
