I'm fine

It was 9pm and there was still no sign of Starfire. Everyone was beginning to wonder if Raven was wrong. In the T-Car, Cyborg kept the line of communication open while Robin studied the park.

"Listen Raven, are you sure he lied about Starfire? Maybe he was trying to hide the pedestrian he robbed earlier or something?" Cyborg asked, starting to lose hope on the plan.

"I'm sure you guys. I saw her face in his thoughts." Raven spoke quietly into their communicators. "Plus our friend here keeps looking for someone to come back through that sidewalk to the North." Raven explained.

Meanwhile, Sam had taken Star into China town to explore a festival with some friends. He didn't have a lot of pocket cash but he managed to get Star a glow stick necklace and some watermelon bubble tea when she wasn't looking. She sipped happily as they watched a red dragon, being manned by twelve dancers, float through the crowd. They danced a long with the music and watched the fireworks go off at midnight. After the show, Sam walked Star back to the camp. During the walk, he could tell she was cold so he offered her a navy fleece blanket he kept in his backpack to wrap up in. They got to the park quickly even though they had walked pretty far.

"What on Earth are you two doing out so late!?" Frank yelled at Sam as soon as he was in earshot. This caught the attention of the Titan spies.

"Don't move!" Bee whispered into her communicator. "We need to see how this plays out before we put her in danger." Everyone watched from their various vantage points.

"I'm sorry! I just took her to the warehouse for dinner and the festival in China town. She'd never been and I thought—." But Sam was cut off.

"Nooo, you didn't think! There are thugs out there! People who could really mess you up! Not to mention the Titans came sniffin' round the park today!" Frank scolded as Sam and Star listened quietly. "If she wants to stay, you two gotta be smart! I don't want any of your vigilante villains comin up here messing with our family!" As Frank finished, Star shot Sam a look of confusion that Raven caught from a distance.

"Guys, stand down. I think this guy is on our side?" Bee whispered into the communicators.

"I agree." Raven replied quietly.

"Vigilante?" Star whispered to Sam as he was about to apologize to Frank. Before he got the chance to explain himself, Frank cut in again.

"Yeah, this kid used to be something, til he got his ass beat! Then he got thrown out when he couldn't fight no more!" Frank scoffed. "Go get ready for bed you two! Sam you take the watch tonight...and for God sakes, don't let Star sleep in the tree!" Franks shouted as he tossed her a new sleeping bag he must've picked up earlier in the day.

"Frank, you didn't have to! " Sam spoke softly seeing the tag still attached to the sleeping bag.

"Yeah I did! She wants to stay...better maker her comfy." Frank winked through the grey beard as he opened the tent zipper to reveal the inside of the extra large red tent. Star sat down to unroll the sleeping bag on the floor of the tent while Sam sat and pulled the tags off next to her. Beastboy transformed into a fly and flew into a small tear at the top of the tent. He watched the two unroll the sleeping bag as Sam tucked Star in.

"You were a hero?" Star whispered looking up at Sam.

"Yeah, a long time ago..." He whispered back, thinking about the old times.

"Do tell what happened." Star inquired. Sam sighed with discomfort over the topic.

"I was good! But I was also a little kid. I was adopted from the orphanage by a madman. He did some tests on me. Made me fight in the streets for money. I ran away and started working in the sub shop by day and avenging criminals who pissed me off at night... One day, I came across Slade. I was twelve and that maniac put me in the hospital until I had no money left for bills. I lied about my age to the sub shop so when my bud Henry covered my bills, they found out I was twelve and I was fired. I lost my apartment, my job, and ended up here. Frank helped me walk again so I've been here ever since." Sam whispered to the green eyes studying him from below. He reached down and pulled off her beanie and brushed a lock of red hair from her forehead with a smile. "I may not be much anymore, but I can still protect you." He whispered softly as Beastboy the fly watched uncomfortably.

"You need not worry!" Star whispered but she was getting tired.

"You get some sleep! I'm going to be outside, keeping watch with Frank until the others get back." Sam said getting up to leave. He paused at the zipper curtain with a smile before zipping it up. Star rolled over to sleep but suddenly the fly that was buzzing around turned into Beastboy!

"Friend!! Why are you here?" Starfire asked shocked as Beastboy shushed her.

"Shh Starfire! I just wanted to check on you." Beastboy whispered. He turned his communicator on in his pocket so that everyone could hear her voice. "Are you safe or do you need me to get you out of here?" Beastboy asked quickly.

"Yes! I am the safe!" She whispered back.

"When are you coming home?" Beastboy asked quietly.

"I feel this might be my new home. I don't wish to come back." She responded sadly.

Robin heard the voice come through the communicator as Cyborg watched his heart break. He gripped the communicator in his gloved hand and closed his masked eyes.

"Why?" Beastboy asked slightly hurt. He lowered his pointy ears subconsciously but he heard Sam coming back to the tent. "I gotta go, but I'll be back!" Beastboy whispered before he turned back into a fly and flew out of the hole. Star laid back down as Sam came back with a Twinkie in-hand.

"Here's this incase you get hungry!" Sam handed it off before zipping the tent back up and sitting guard outside.

Beastboy flew back to the car and changed back as Raven and Bee appeared as well.

"Should we stay?" Beastboy asked quietly as everyone looked toward Robin. It was easy to see the heartbreak on his face, even through his mask.

"No. Let's go." Robin mumbled and everyone go back into the car. No one said a word because everyone was still digesting what they just witnessed. Finally, Cyborg pulled up to the tower. Everyone got out except Robin and Cyborg. Once the car doors closed and Raven rushed everyone inside, Cyborg asked Robin the question that was lingering in his head the entire drive back.

"Hey man, I know it's rough, but are you going to be okay?" Cyborg asked with care.

"I'm fine." Robin lied, coldy, before he got out of the car and walked away.
