Chapter 40

"It's all cold and depressing outside," Y/N groaned as she rolled over, yawning in the process.

"I like the rain," Barry hummed as he rolled over, his bare chest pressed against Y/N's back, "Almost as much as I like you," he said kissing her just behind her ear.

Y/N hummed as Barry draped his arm over her waist, she found his touch warm and comforting as she gazed out the window in their bedroom at the gray sky, the gentle sound of rain filled the room, the rumble of thunder prominent.

"What are you planning on doing today?" Y/N asked as she snuggled back under the covers and into Barry warmth.

"I don't know," Barry hummed, "I should probably head down to the station, or maybe S.T.A.R. Labs, but preferably; I'd stay here with you all day," he said nuzzling his face into the crook of her neck.

Y/N smiled, "All day?" she questioned.

"All day," Barry confirmed as he hugged her a little tighter.

"You don't think that maybe we should return to our Flash duties? Cisco has been handling it for the past few days, but I think it's a bit much for him," Y/N turning in Barry's arms, her chest now pressed against his.

Barry nodded slowly, "I guess having a break was nice," he admitted. "It was nice to hear police sirens and not have to chase after them."

"I know," Y/N replied as she ran her fingers through Barry's hair, earning a soft hum from him, she then rested her hand against Barry's chest as he rested his forehead against hers.

"What are you going to do today?" Barry asked, his fingers grazing over her cheek tenderly.

Y/N shrugged, "I was planning to head down to lab to talk with Cisco, we were going to work on that file that my dad gave me," she explained. "But, as you mentioned before, I'd much rather spend my day right here with you," she added.

Barry nodded, "It's getting pretty bad out there," he said looking out the window, the once gray clouds now even darker, the rain now coming down more heavily, and it was only the morning. Barry watched as the lightning danced across the dark sky.

"I don't like the rain, but I do like the lightning," Y/N as she turned and looked out the window briefly.

Barry let out a soft laugh, "That sounds like something that a speedster would say," he commented.

"Lucky for you I am a speedster," she said kissing him.

"Welcome back Flash," Caitlin smirked as Y/N entered the Cortex.

"It's good to be back," Y/N replied. Cisco then breached into the Cortex and practically collapsed into Y/N arms, his suit still on.

"Oh thank the speed force heaven that you're back," he sighed. "Vibe is done being a hero for the next few days," he said as he fell back into a chair. "It isn't easy protecting the entire city."

Y/N chuckled, "I know, probably better than you do, Cisco."

"Yeah whatever, you and Barry got to have your little vacation, I bet you two were all cute and fluffy the entire time, I heard you two even went dancing," Cisco pouted. "But did Cisco get to go dancing? No. Cisco had to breach all across the city to save it from crazed metahumans."

"I'm sorry Cisco," Y/N said patting him on the shoulder. "Now it's time for Vibe to take a vacation, be the guy in the chair for a little while."

"I feel like I've heard that somewhere before," Cisco pondered.

"Heard what before?" Y/N asked.

"The guy in the chair thing, maybe it was a Spider-man movie or something," Cisco thought.

--

Y/N had been waiting all day for an alert to come in, anything, a bank robbery, a carjacking, she was practically hoping for someone to get robbed just so she could run again.

Well, her wishes came true not long after, an alert sounded throughout the Cortex, Eliza Morris had been spotted near the waterfront.

"Facial recognition just picked her up, this is the live footage," Caitlin said bringing a video up on the monitor. "Barry's on his way."

"So am I," Y/N said as she ran out of the Cortex. The ground was slick, but the cool air hitting her skin felt refreshing, the lightning under her feet as she ran felt incredible. The familiar feeling of running started to spread over her, her body filling with power, her heart pounding from adrenaline, she felt free, she felt...alive...

Y/N came to a less than graceful stop at the waterfront near an alleyway, the rain was not on the speedster's side, the slick concrete made it hard to run and stop on a dime.

"Yeah I ran into that same problem," Barry said joining Y/N by her side as Eliza approached them, she had some sort of device on her hand, it appeared to be some sort of glove.

"Eliza," Barry spat out flatly.

"Flash," she greeted. "I was surprised to see that you stopped the quantum enhanced bomb, but once you did I realized that I needed to up my game, and that's just what I did."

"What are you playing at?" Y/N asked harshly.

Eliza chuckled, "While the Flashes took a break from saving the city, another hero emerged, called himself Vibe. His powers are unique, and gave me an idea," she said holding up the weapon in her hand, it resembled one of Cisco's breacher gloves. "This glove could throw a car miles away...I wonder what it could do to a speedster..."

Y/N tried to make a move for the device, but Eliza had already aimed and fired, the machine threw Y/N straight into the alley's brick wall. Y/N fell to the ground as she made first impact with the wall, her body writhing in pain, every bone and muscle in her body ached. She tried to move, only to have the pain flood her entire body, sweeping over her like a tsunami...it was unbearable.

Barry watched in horror as Y/N was thrown around like a rag doll, her body hitting the concrete beneath her. He saw her move ever so slightly, a wave of relief took over his body as he knew that she was at least alive.

"Oh how the mighty have fallen," Eliza snickered. "I thought you were supposed to be the best."

"We are," Barry replied sternly, the rain sliding down his suit, some of the droplets sticking to the leather.

She let out a soft laugh, "Well, clearly your best isn't good enough," she said raising the device again, this time aiming it at Barry.

Barry tried to dodge the blast, but he lost his footing on the slick ground, he fell flat on his back, "Well, that's one way to dodge it," he mumbled to himself as he pulled himself back to his feet.

"You seem a little out of practice Flash, should I take it easy on you?" Eliza questioned as she aimed the device at the scarlet speedster.

Only this time, Barry knew what to expect, he knew exactly what he was up against, he made his move quickly and kicked Eliza's feet out from under her.

Eliza dropped the device as her feet fell out from underneath her, her back hitting the concrete hard, "We are the best," Barry said smugly before knocking her unconscious.

"Move out!" Singh yelled as he, Joe, and several other officers spread out throughout the area, quickly sweeping every inch of it. Joe gave Barry a subtle nod as he observed what his son had done, "Nice work, Flash."

Barry took a moment to catch his breath as the rain fell around him, the thunder and lightning crackling throughout the sky provided an ominous mood to the whole situation.

"We need a med team over here!" one of the officers shouted.

Barry turned at the sound, then he realized why they were shouting, "Y/N..," he whispered under his breath. Time seemed to stop as he saw her, the rain stopped falling, the lightning in the sky frozen in place, the fear overwhelming his body.

He sped over to where she was, the officers had turned her flat on her back as the paramedics made their way around them, wasting no time to begin addressing her injuries. Y/N groaned as they continued to examine her, the pain surging through her body, unlike anything she had ever faced before.

"Is she...is she gonna be okay?" Barry struggled to find the right words.

"It's hard to tell at this point, judging by her injuries, and her pain, I'd say she has a dislocation of her T10 to T12 vertebrae, but it could also be worse than that," the medic explained. "It's hard to treat her without taking off her suit and mask, something I'm sure you don't want us to do."

"Flash," Y/N cried out and she aimlessly stuck her hand out, Barry kneeled down, pushing past the people around him, and gladly took her hand in his own.

"What happens if I move her?" Barry choked out.

"You could risk complete paralysis from the waist down, the risks are endless," the paramedic warned.

"Too late," Y/N interjected. "I can't feel my legs," she said turning to face Barry.

"I wouldn't dare unless you have a very capable medical team waiting for you somewhere," the medic explained.

"It's a risk that I'm willing to take," Barry said scooping Y/N into his arms.
