Chapter 20

"I'm telling you they are relationship goals of the century," Cisco said in the doorway of the med bay with Caitlin as they both observed Y/N and Barry as they slept.

"I have to say, Cisco. When you started shipping them almost 3 years ago, I didn't think it would work out, they seemed too perfect," Caitlin said.

Cisco smiled and nudged her arm, "I'm always right, why would you ever doubt that?" Cisco questioned.

"Oh, would you two stop?" Y/N asked as she rolled over in Barry's arms.

"Agreed," he murmured into her hair.

Cisco stood silent for a moment before accepting defeat and leaving to go back to the Cortex. Caitlin offered a friendly smile as she entered the room and quickly checking over Y/N.

"You look good Y/N, you're healing fast, but I'm gonna make you stay on bedrest for another day or two. Just to be safe," Caitlin said leaving the room.

"One inch," Barry said opening his eyes and gazing into Y/N's as she rolled over to meet his gaze, both of them still laying down.

"Hmm?" she asked confusedly.

"One inch, that's how far away one of the bullets was from your heart," Barry explained while running his fingers through her hair.

"Hey, can we not talk about me getting shot?" Y/N asked putting her hand over Barry's.

Barry quickly shot her a worried expression, "Yeah," he nodded. "How are you feeling?" he asked.

"Sore, a little pain, but I'm fine, I overheard Cisco saying that you were shot too," she said running her fingers through his hair gently.

Barry smiled at the feeling, "It's nothing compared to what you went through, right now you are the only thing on my mind," he smiled.

Y/N ran her fingers over his cheek, gently palming it, a smile growing on her face as she did so.

"Come here," Barry said pulling her closer, her head tucking neatly under his chin. "Do you need me to get you anything?" he asked as he soothingly rubbing his hand up and down her back.

"All I need is you right here, right now," she said snuggling into his warmth. "You're my teddy bear."

"I'm your teddy bear," Barry smirked as he wrapped his arms around her snugly.

A few hours later Barry left on a metahuman call only to have Cisco urging him to come right back to S.T.A.R. Labs to see Y/N. She was peacefully asleep when Barry left, but when he came back she was tossing and turning and practically screaming in her sleep.

"Y/N?" Barry asked taking a seat on the bed next to her, gently placing his hands on her shoulders and lightly shaking her awake, "Y/N, you gotta wake up," he said shaking her a little harder.

Y/N suddenly awoke, wrapped her arms around him, her breathing fast and heavy, body shaking slightly. Barry takes her into his arms and begins to whisper comforting things to her.

"Hey, don't worry, I'm here, I'm here," Barry said pulling Y/N's shaking form into his embrace, "Shh..." he cooed gently.

"Do you wanna talk about it...the nightmare?" Barry asked still holding her tightly.

"It wasn't a nightmare, it was a memory," Y/N explained, shaking her head. "It was of me, turning around, and not being fast enough to stop the bullets. I stood there in shock as I started bleeding out. And the next thing I know I'm laying on the concrete, I could feel it, cold and damp. And I could feel my own blood pooling around me, I could feel myself choking on it. This burning sensation spreading over my entire body like a wildfire, and then I saw you...you were sad and alone, and I could see the terror in your eyes through the tears. Your panicked voice as you talked to Cisco, you thought I was gonna leave you...and so did I. Only difference between what really happened and this nightmare is that I did die, and I did leave you...alone," Y/N barely finished through her sobs.

"But that didn't happen," Barry defended. "You hung on, you didn't give up, you kept fighting...and you won, you're still here. You are still my partner, my best friend, and the love of my life," he said stroking her hair as her tears flowed. He took one of Y/N's hands in his, gently running his thumb across it.

"Barry, this was a close call, too close almost...I don't want to lose you," she said looking into this eyes through the tears.

"You're not going to lose me, and I'm not going to lose you," Barry said pulling her back into his arms, her head cradled into his neck.
