Big Trouble In The Big Apple

Monday was good at morning, but we still have to go to the studio. I had this feeling, something bad was going to happen. It wasn't like forgetting a dance or problems with a prop, this time it was bigger. Oh well, I'll just have to wait to find out.

"I would love to say congratulations, I would like to be excited about the overall high score win of the group routine. It was the highest scoring routine of the event, but I wasn't so excited about my fourth place solo, and my third place duet." Abby starts pyramid.

"Abby, do you regret bringing Chloe in?" Jill asks, "It took away time from every one of these kids. Do you regret that? Or--"

"No, actually, I really enjoyed working with that young lady." Abby answers and everyone looks at her.

"On-on our kids' time, though. This is your ALDC, this is your name in your back." Jill says, "Not hers."

"Jill, are you teaching me how to run my business?" Abby asks and everything goes silent.

"No, no, but she didn't fit in with this team, and more than that, she took away from your kids." Jill defends herself.

"And you said you want a dancer and a dance mom that can hit the ground running." Holly adds.

"I do." Abby says.

"She didn't-- she never got to the starting block" Holly says.

"I think it's a little off when I bring one person in. It hasn't worked. That's why I made a little decision." Abby announces, "I'm not bringing in a dancer to replace one of you. I'm looking to cast an entire new elite junior competition team."

I'm shocked, a whole new team? Yeah, I'm officially out by this point. I can't help but look at everyone, who are as shocked as I am. The tension is felt everywhere, and I close my eyes, wishing this was just a dream.

"Ladies, this is a reality check. I will be forming another team to challenge you. They'll get to start from scratch, just like you guys did. I'm auditioning kids from all over the country now. I know what I want. Maddie. You might be on the new team. Let's get to pyramid. Melanie. Injured."

Maddie

Paige   Brooke

Mackenzie   Nia   Kendall   Chloe   Melanie

"This week we will be going to New York. You will be competing at Sheer Talent. Paige, it's been a long time, you will be performing a solo. The name of the solo is 'Ooh-La-La'. I believe it is just right for you. Brooke. You will also be performing a solo this week. It will be a contemporary acrobatic routine. It'd better be amazing. Paige and Chloe, you will also be performing a duet. The title of the duet. Aptly titled, 'Wishbone'. Right now everybody is in the group dance. Obviously except Melanie. 'Beautiful Revenge'. You're all beautiful, and I need to get some revenge in New York.  I will also be hosting my third open-call audition. New York City. Chloe, you're going to come to the audition, and your mom is gonna work too. Kelly. You think you're up to help Christi? Paige and Brooke, you will be accompanying your mother, Chloe and Christi to New York City on Friday."

"I have a question, what are Maddie, Mackenzie, Kendall, and Nia doing while we're in auditions?" Christi asks.

"They're attending NUVO dance competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I don't want to hold my students back. That's a competition I want to attend. Spread apart, let's go."

I sit on the back of the studio and take out my phone. After half an hour of the girls rehearsing and Abby yelling corrections, the door that leads to the Dancer's Den opens and I look up.

"KALANI!" I exclaim and smile, causing everyone to look at me.

She hugs me and then hugs Abby. Kalani was on AUDC, and she's a great friend! Yeah, I met her a while ago. She and Maddie have this beautiful duet called 'Two Sapphires', they're going to perform it at the NUVO competition, and I'm so excited to see it. All the girls hug her and the other girl whose name I forgot and they sit down beside me to watch the girls practice.

•NUVO Competition/Auditions Day•

I wake up and go brush my teeth, change my pajamas to a black long sleeve shirt, jeans, and black sneakers. I put my hair into a bun and take my phone. I stopped using the crutches now, at least that's what the doctor said. I go downstairs to the living room where all of the stuff was and Mom was talking on the phone. Maddie was taking the stuff out to the car and I have not seen Kenzie.

"Okay girls, they're all meeting us at the competition so we gotta go now." Mom says and Kenzie arrives.

"Okay!" She says and runs out the door.

We get all of the stuff in the car and leave for the competition. Once we arrive, we're greeted by Jill and Kendall, and still have to wait for Nia and Kalani.

"What do you think the Lukasiaks and Hylands thought when Abby told them about us coming here today?" Kendall asks.

"I don't know, after all they were going to the auditions, and they have a lot of stuff to do." Maddie answers.

"I hope we didn't hurt their feelings." Kenzie says.

"And why would we? They have their own stuff to do so we can do stuff too." Maddie says and Kendall nods.

"Hi." Nia says walking towards us.

"Hi!" I say.

"Hey." Kendall says.

"Good, now we just have to wait for Kalani!" Kenzie says and high fives Nia.

"Hello." Maddie says, "Okay, so Kalani is probably going to be here on five, so we should probably start getting ready."

We go to the dressing room and they start getting all of the costumes out. I decided to help them so that they would have more time to practice.

"I'm here!" Kalani exclaims as she enters the room.

"Great!" Kenzie says.

"Where are the Moms?" Nia asks looking at Kalani.

"Outside chit-chatting." Kalani says as she places her dance bag on her seat, "So how is this? Do I get ready now or..?"

"I think the duet's up first." Kendall says.

Maddie sits down and starts doing her hair as Kenzie starts stretching. Kalani sits down and starts doing her own hair and Nia starts stretching with Kenzie. I continue helping Kendall put everything on place and the moms arrive.

"Oh, good job, girls." Holly says.

"Thank you" Kendall and I say at the same time.

Everyone starts getting ready and I just play on my phone.

"So what do you think about this weekend's competition?" Jill asks.

"I haven't really thought about that at all." Mom says.

"I just feel like Kelly isn't so thrilled on Paige having a solo, a duet and the group all at the same time." Jill says.

"I know for a fact that Kelly is really happy about that, she doesn't have to go around saying 'Paige has a solo!' to show it." Holly tells Jill.

"Agree." Mom says.

"Where is that competition?" Kira asks.

"Is in New York City." Jill answers.

We all go to the audience and the competition begins.

•Competition Day•

"Where is Abby? Like, why she didn't come in with us? She always comes in with us." Kelly asks as they all get ready in the dressing room.

"She doesn't need to come." Christi says.

"It's my kids that have the solos and the duet, she doesn't care about my kids." Kelly says.

"How was yesterday? Is it because she had a rough day yesterday at auditions?" Holly asks.

I put on my jacket and stand by the door waiting for them to finish. We all leave and go to the audience.

"Up next, judges, we have entry number 163, a preteen solo contemporary. Please welcome 'Ooh-La-La'."

The music's actually funny. Once she is over we cheer, and it's now time for Brooke's.

"Up next, judges, we have entry number 164. Entry number 164 is a teen solo acro-gymnastics, 'Purple Reign'."

Imagine you're one speck of glitter shining in the sky. Imagine you're a dragon with no courage left to fly.

After that, we go back to the dressing room, and I see Maddie and Kalani on their duet costumes, I didn't even know Kalani was here!

"Um, what are you doing?" I ask and they look at me.

"Abby entered the duet to the competition." Maddie says worried.

"But aren't Chloe and Paige doing their duet today?!" I whisper.

"That's the point, we're kinda of competing, against them." Maddie tells me.

This isn't gonna be good.

I go to the audience and just try to calm down, this is going to ruin everything. The moms, Gia and Abby soon arrive and well, they weren't on their best mood.

"Okay, judges, we are now going to entry number 76. Entry number 76 is a preteen duet lyrical, please welcome 'Two Sapphires'."

My heart stopped beating, and two lightning storms, two glowing embers, two galaxies. All the nights I didn't sleep, all your secrets that I keep.

I just kept watching, without knowing that everything was about to change because of that dance. They finish and we cheer as they leave the stage.

"And Melissa, she's just a big fat liar." We hear Christi say and we look at her.

"She's just a big fat liar, she blatantly lied to Chloe." Kelly says and I look at Mom.

"Don't listen to them." Mom tells me.

"Why shouldn't she? You don't want her to know that you lied to a 12 year old, and made your daughter lie to her too?" Christi asks looking at Mom and Abby.

"Please stop." I whisper.

"Melanie deserves to know the kind of person that you are." Kelly says.

"Please stop!" I yell and tears start forming on my eyes.

"You're such an idiot." Abby tells Kelly.

"Stop arguing!" Holly says.

"Entry number 165 is a preteen duet contemporary. Please welcome 'Wishbone'."

I stand up and go to the dressing room. I wipe my tears and sit down. I look at myself in the mirror.

What's going on? Did Maddie lie to Chloe? Are Christi and Kelly serious about everything? Was this Abby's fault? Am I just overthinking?

I hear the door slam open, and I see Christi and Kelly, I just ignore them and start brushing my hair. The rest of the moms enter and the girls do too.

"Maddie, did you lie to them?" Mom asks.

"No, I say we were doing the duet for NUVO-- that's the competition I was talking about. I didn't know if we were doing it here." Maddie answers.

"You know what? Here's the thing, you just keep your head up. Don't let all of that get to any of you. Okay?" Christi tells Chloe and Chloe whispers something, "I know, Chloe, I know."

"And other people are allowed to perform, too." Maddie says.

"Poor Chloe." Mom says.

"You know who your friends are." Kelly says, "That's all I have to say, okay?"

"I'm a nice friend, Mom." Maddie says.

"You are her friend." Mom tells Maddie.

"Apparently not anymore." Maddie says, on the verge of tears.

The whole situation is really awkward, and we aren't even on the worst part, Abby enters the room with Kira and Kalani.

"Girls, you all know Kalani. I know some of the moms didn't recognize her when she came in, but this is her mother, Kira." Abby says, "So Moms, I've had auditions and I've seen a lot of great talent, so I think Kalani might be our right fit."

"The whole package." Kelly says.

"Right. So, Kalani has the package. And I just said to Kalani in the other room 'Well, you might have to just do a solo.' She goes, 'Well, I don't have a solo yet.' I'll just improv, turn the music on. Brooke, I gave you how many opportunities last week to do something on a chair, to get on it, to get off it, to do something cool. You stood on it." Abby says.

"Well, maybe you should replace her." Kelly says.

"Kalani, do you know the group dance?" Jill asks

"Yes, I know it. But not like that well, I kinda know it." Kalani answers.

"Okay, just checking." Jill says.

"I don't know, look at Brooke over there. Didn't her mother just say to replace her? Brooke, is your mother speaking for you?" Abby asks.

"But we come as a team." Kelly says, "We're all leaving."

"Do you not want to dance? I just want your mother quit speaking for you. You're 15 years old. Grow the h*** up." Abby says.

"You know what? You shut the h*** up." Kelly snaps back.

"See how she talks to me?"

I sit beside Kenzie and hold her hand, I'm starting to feel scared. She looks at me and smiles, even though I know she's as scared as I am.

"Abby, if you're not happy with my kid because she doesn't smart-mouth you and say something back, we will leave."

"Kelly, why-- I don't-- I'm just asking--" Kira tries to say but Kelly interrupts her.

You know, don't even speak to me." Kelly says and starts packing her stuff.

"Oh, why can't I speak to you?

"'Cause I don't want speak with you."

"We're coming into this all new, and so I just want to know what we're getting into."-

"A bully for a teacher. Here's your costumes. Enjoy the dance. Hylands, let's go."

"Kelly, we don't want you to go." Jill tries to calm Kelly down, "The girls-- You guys don't want to go."

"Well, obviously she wants someone who has never danced here take both of my kids' place."

"No, the kids want to dance--" Holly says.

They all start talking at the same time.

"No, you said--" Abby says.

"Did you just sit her and say that my daughter looks miserable so we should put Kalani in her place." Kelly says.

"No, I never said that."

"Yes, you most certainly did.".

"No, I didn't d******. Listen!" Abby yells standing up and walking towards Kelly and putting her finger on front of her face, "I said, 'Brooke, is your Mother speaking for you? Do you want to be here?'"

"Get your finger out of my face!" Kelly tells and points at Abby, who tries to bite her finger, and Kelly slaps her and pushes her.

"GIRLS OUT THE ROOM, GIRLS OUT THE ROOM!" Holly yells and we all start crying, "Out the room! Girls, out of the room right now! Girls!"

"GET AWAY FROM ME! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!"

All the girls and I stand up and run out of the room. We all enter the bathroom near there and lock the door. Maddie keeps saying I'm sorry and crying, Nia doesn't say a single word, Kalani is still shocked, Kenzie and Kendall are both shaking and almost crying and I'm completely crying.

"Why did this have to happen?" Kendall asks.

"It's all my fault!" Maddie cries.

"It isn't your fault! Is no one's!" Nia says and hugs Maddie.

"Can we even talk with them anymore?" Kenzie asks.

"I don't think so." Kalani says.

"Does Chloe hate us now? Will the police take Kelly?" I ask.

"I don't think that's happening." Kalani answers.

"We still have the group dance." Kendall says, "I just wanna dance."

We go back to the dressing room and the girls start preparing for the group dance. We all go the audience and just wait for the group and awards.

"In preteen solos, fifth place goes to entry number 163, 'Ooh-La-La'." The announcer says and Kenzie goes to receive Paige's award.

Teen Solos.

"In teen solos, fifth place is entry number 45 'Stand By Me'. Fourth place goes to entry number 164, 'Purple Reign'." The announcer says and Kendall goes to receive Brooke's award

After a while, they start announcing the preteen duet category.

"Up next, I hold the high score for Preteen Duet. Third place goes to entry number 75, 'Count On Me'. Second place goes to entry number 165, 'Wishbone'. And your top score for Preteen Duo... Entry number 76, 'Two Sapphires'."

"Lastly, I have is Preteen groups. Second place goes to entry number 92, 'We No Speak Americano', and now, your top score, goes to entry number 166, 'Beautiful Revenge'."

The girls go to receive the award, but it's obvious the tension and they looked uncomfortable, especially Maddie and Chloe.

Once again, I knew something was going to happen, and it was absolutely worse than before. I really like the duet 'Two Sapphires', but that dance broke friendships, passions and more

It broke Dance Moms forever.
