Book 5 ~ Chapter 3

As dawn breaks, the palace is bathed in the soft, golden glow of the rising sun, reflecting off the intricate red and gold rooftops and casting long shadows across the meticulously kept gardens. The air is crisp and cool, filled with the scent of morning dew and blooming flowers from the palace gardens. The first light of dawn filters through the ornate windows of the guest quarters, casting a warm, golden glow.

"Morning, everyone. Ready to kick some criminal butt today?" Korra yawned, as she walked in to the main living room.

"As ready as I can be, I could use some coffee though," Mako said, as he rubbed his eyes walking out of the shared room with Lei.

"I don't know about you guys but I'm starving! Do you think they have those spicy Fire Nation pastries for breakfast?" Bolin asking excitedly, awake and ready for the day ahead.

"Bolin, food is always on your mind. But I wouldn't mind some coffee to wake up," Asami said, as she smoothed out her hair.

"Bolin's right, we should all get something to eat before we start the day. Follow me, I'll take us to the dining hall," Lei smiled, her hair neatly styled up.

They made their way to the door, stepping out into the gardens then to the hallway that leads to the main palace areas. The sounds of the palace waking up —guards changing shifts, servants bustling about— create a sense of calm purpose. As they approach the grand staircase leading to the main hall, they are greeted by a servant who bows respectfully and gestures towards the dining area.

"Good Morning, your highness, and Team Avatar. Breakfast has been prepared for you in the dining hall," the servant said.

The servants lead them to a beautifully decorated dining hall where a sumptuous breakfast awaits, complete with an array of Fire Nation delicacies. The dining hall was an opulent space, adorned with intricate red and gold decor that reflects the Fire Nation's regal heritage. Large windows let in the soft morning light, illuminating the room and casting a warm glow over the elegantly set table.

The table was a long, polished piece of dark wood, covered with a pristine white cloth. Fine china and beautifully crafted silverware are arranged with precision, alongside delicate porcelain tea cups and pots. The centerpiece is a stunning arrangement of fresh fire lilies, their vibrant red petals a nod to the nation's emblem. The breakfast spread is a sumptuous array of traditional Fire Nation dishes, each meticulously prepared and presented.

"Look at all this food, I'm in heaven!" Bolin says with wide eyes, taking a seat next to Opal. He grabbed a piece of Spicy Fire Flakes Pastry, which seemed to be his favorite.

As they enjoy their breakfast, the atmosphere is one of camaraderie and anticipation for the day ahead.

"These pastries are amazing! Spicy, but so good!" Bolin says, with a mouth full of pastries.

"This coffee is exactly what I needed," Asami said in a calm voice, as she took another sip of her coffee.

Mako spotted a large platter of Grilled Sea Trout, he took a piece for his plate and took a bite, before saying, "The fish taste's amazing. Compliments to the chef,"

"When I brought you guys here, I didn't think you'd enjoy the Fire Nation this much," Lei laughed, as she felt at peace sharing the love of her home with her friends.

"I don't think I've ever had this much fun on a mission before," Korra said, as she laid back on her chair, full from the hearty breakfast she had consumed.

"We should get ready soon, Juyin is meeting us at the Palace Entrance," Lei said as she stood up from her seat, the rest following her.

"I'll pack some snacks for the road. Never know when we'll need a quick energy boost," Bolin said as he started stuffing his jacket with pastries.

The team reconvenes at the front of the palace. The grand entrance now bustling with activity, guards standing at attention and servants moving with purpose. Kaya and Naga were already waiting, saddled up for their owners. Juyin arrives driving a Sato Jeep, with Pabu sleeping on the backseat.

"You guys, ready?" Juyin asked, signaling them to hop in and saddle up. Their destination takes them to Harbor City. Mako sat at the front of the jeep, with Asami, Opal, and Bolin behind them. Following behind the jeep was Korra and Lei, riding Naga and Kaya.

They arrive in the bustling city. The streets are crowded with people going about their business, and the imposing Fire Nation Royal Palace looms in the distance. The streets are lined with tall, ornate buildings constructed from dark stone and red wood, their architecture a blend of traditional Fire Nation style with modern touches. Red and gold banners flutter in the breeze, bearing the emblem of the Fire Nation, adding a sense of pride and continuity to the scene. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors calling out their wares, the clatter of metal from blacksmiths' forges, and the hum of machinery from industrial workshops.

The streets were crowded with people from all walks of life. Fire Nation citizens, dressed in vibrant red and gold robes, mingle with travelers and traders from other nations, their attire and features adding splashes of color and diversity to the scene. Street performers entertain with displays of firebending prowess, drawing applause and coins from onlookers. Children weave through the throng, laughing and playing, while elders sit in shaded alcoves, sharing stories and wisdom.

Lei unboards Kaya, while the rest get off the jeep. They gather into a huddle amidst the busy street surrounding them.

"We need to find out who the buyer is. Let's start by gathering information from the local merchants," Lei starts, taking the lead in the investigation.

"Maybe we should split up to cover more ground, but we need to stay in contact," Korra suggested, Asami walked up to the group with a bag of supplies in her hands.

"I brought some radios with me, they should be working fine. We can use them to update each other regularly," Asami said, as she handed each of them a radio.

"Here are some maps, you can use them to navigate around the city. I know how easily you can get lost here," Juyin said speaking from experience.

Mako nodded and said, "I have a contact in the police force here. They might have some leads,"

"Juyin and I will come with you," Lei added, Juyin nodded in agreement.

"I'll visit the docks and the tech shops. If any unusual equipment has been coming in, they'll know," Asami explained.

"And I'll, uh, mingle with the locals. Maybe I can charm some information out of them," Bolin added, Mako raised an eyebrow at his brother, doubting his statement.

The Team splits up into three different directions. Korra and Asami head to the docks, Bolin and Opal head to the marketplace, and Mako, Lei, and Juyin head to Fire Nation Police Station.

The docks are a sprawling expanse of wooden piers and stone quays, stretching out into the deep blue waters of the harbor. Massive cargo ships, sleek merchant vessels, and smaller fishing boats are moored along the piers, their sails furled and their hulls rocking gently with the tide. The docks are lined with towering cranes and winches, their metal frames glinting in the sunlight as they lift heavy crates and barrels from the ships' holds.

The air is filled with the salty tang of the sea, mingling with the scents of fish, tar, and spices. The sound of waves lapping against the wooden pilings is punctuated by the shouts of dockworkers, the clanging of metal, and the creaking of ropes and pulleys.

Asami and Korra begin questioning the workers around for any suspicious shipments. One of the dockworker replied to them saying, "We see all sorts of stuff coming in, Miss. Anything specific you're looking for?"

Asami describes the machines that once hypnotized her and her friends, before asking, "Have you seen anything like this being shipped recently?"

The dockworker thought to himself for a moment, before saying, "There was a shipment a few days ago. Looked like fine machinery. Not sure what it was for, but the crates were marked with a symbol I didn't recognize,"

"Which symbol?" Korra pushed further. The dockworker started drawing the symbol from memory on the dirt.

"Looked something like this," the dockworker pointing to the drawing, leaving Asami and Korra with confused expressions.

The marketplaces are bustling hubs where merchants sell a variety of goods. Stalls overflow with exotic fruits, freshly caught seafood, and intricately crafted jewelry. The scent of spicy street food wafts through the air, mingling with the aroma of incense from nearby shrines. Hawkers shout out prices and deals, their voices competing with the chatter of customers haggling for the best bargains.

Bolin and Opal navigate through the bustling marketplace, chatting with vendors and sampling their wares. Bolin's friendly demeanor quickly winning people over.

"You sure know how to appreciate good food, young man!" a vendor laughs at his enthusiasm.

"Absolutely! Hey, have you heard any rumors about strange new gadgets or machines being shipped around here?" Bolin asks, taking opportunity of the conversation.

"A few days ago, bunch of guys were moving some odd-looking devices. Claimed they were for home security, but they didn't look like anything I'd trust in my house," the vendor says.

"Do you know where they went?" Opal asks, the vendor shakes his head.

"No, but I know someone who might. He goes by the name, 'The Mechanist,' he sells different parts where the less reputable traders do business," the vendor replies, pointing into a darker part of the marketplace. Bolin and Opal follow the lead and venture deeper into the marketplace.

The Fire Nation Police Station stands as a testament to order and authority in the heart of the capital city. The building itself is an imposing structure of dark stone, with red and gold banners bearing the Fire Nation emblem hanging from its facade. It is both a symbol of protection and a reminder of the law.

The station is located on a wide, cobblestone street lined with other official buildings. Large, heavy wooden doors serve as the main entrance, guarded by two vigilant officers in traditional Fire Nation armor. Above the entrance, an intricate carving of a phoenix rising from flames signifies rebirth and vigilance.

Entering the station, they were greeted by a spacious lobby. The walls are lined with portraits of esteemed officers and historical documents framed behind glass. The floor is polished marble, with a large emblem of the Fire Nation embedded in the center, catching the light from the chandeliers above.

To the right of the entrance is the reception desk, manned by a diligent clerk. Behind the desk, an intricate map of the Fire Nation capital is pinned to the wall, with various markers indicating ongoing investigations and points of interest. A few benches are arranged for visitors, and the atmosphere is one of bustling efficiency.

"Why does this place make our Police Station look so small?" Mako said, in awe. Lei chuckled.

"Commander Juyin," a deep voice called, approached a man wearing the traditional uniform of a high-ranking Fire Nation officer: a dark red tunic with gold trim, complemented by black trousers and polished leather boots. The emblem of the Fire Nation is emblazoned on his chest, and his uniform is adorned with various medals and badges that signify his years of service and achievements. A crimson sash is draped diagonally across his chest, adding to his distinguished appearance.

"Chief Hiroto," Juyin greeted, as they are well acquainted with one another, both being high-ranking officers of the Nation.

The Chief of the Fire Nation Police, Chief Hiroto, is a distinguished and formidable figure. He is in his late forties, with a stern yet calm demeanor that commands respect. His build is athletic, a testament to years of rigorous training and fieldwork, and he carries himself with the confidence of someone who has seen and handled countless crises.

Chief Hiroto stands and greets them with a respectful nod. His demeanor is welcoming yet professional, clearly understanding the gravity of the situation they are investigating.

"Your highness, welcome. It's an honor to have you here," Chief Hiroto says, as he bows to Lei.

"Thank you, Chief Hiroto. We appreciate your assistance in this investigation," Lei says, with gratitude.

"Please, let's talk privately in my office," Chief Hiroto says, as he gestured to follow him.

The station is a hive of activity. Officers move briskly, either on their way to assignments or engaged in discussions about cases. The air is filled with the sounds of footsteps, muffled conversations, and the occasional ringing of a bell or phone as they walked by.

The chief's office was a large, well-appointed room with a grand desk, a comfortable seating area, and large windows overlooking the city. The walls are lined with bookshelves, and a large map of the Fire Nation hangs behind the desk. The Chief takes a seat on the comfortable seating area, Lei and Mako sitting across from him. Juyin standing behind them.

"From what Mako told me over the phone, I understand you are investigating some rather concerning activities," Chief Hiroto began.

"Yes, have you had any unusual shipments of machinery these last few days?" Lei asked, Chief Hiroto grabbed a few files from the table.

"Yes, we have. Actually, we compiled reports that might help. There have been unusual shipments and sightings that align with your descriptions," Chief Hiroto replied, as he handed the files to Mako, who carefully started reviewing some of them.

"Other than that, do you have anything else that might help?" Lei asked, once more.

"There is someone that might be able to help. Although I don't agree with his methods of trade, there is a mechanist that owns a tech shop in the deeper part of the marketplace. He knows everything about the technology on the Fire Nation. He may be able to give you the information you need," Chief Hiroto explains, writing down the address on a small piece of paper, before handing it to Lei.

"We really appreciate all you've done to help us, Chief Hiroto," Lei said, in thanks, Chief Hiroto bows.
