Book 2 ~ Chapter 6

✨•~~~~~~~~•✨
LEIs POV

I opened my eyes tiredly, and I yawn as I look around. I was on a bed but I wasn't in Air Temple Island. The place looked a bit familiar, and then I realized that this was Mako's bed in his apartment. I take off the blanket that covers my legs, and get up from the bed. I started walking to the living room, and see that no one was here. I looked at the kitchen counter and see that there was a note under an empty mug. I pick up the mug and get the note from under.

Lin called us in for something urgent. I didn't want to wake you, so just come to the station when you wake up. I'll cover for you. There's coffee in the heater to wake you up. Also, Don't forget to lock the apartment. See you later :)

I smiled lightly at how sweet and kind Mako was. With the mug in my hand, I go to the heater in the corner of the kitchen counter. I pour coffee into mug until it fills to the top. If we were called to the station for something urgent, then I should probably hurry. I quickly drink my mug of coffee until there was none left. I run to the bathroom, and quickly wash my face and fix my hair. Once I looked presentable, I quickly grab my swords placed on the coffee table and head out of the apartment. I lock the other side of the door and close it shut. Once I'm outside of the building, I stand at the edge of the sidewalk. I look around for any taxi. When I saw one, I raised my hand to get his attention. The car stops in front of me, and I hop inside. I told the driver to head for the station as quickly as possible. On the way there, I kept thinking about how great this job was. It was a really fun experience for me. Once I arrived, I payed the driver, and make my way into the building. I enter the offices and see Mako rummaging through the detective's desk drawers. I raised my eyebrow questioningly, and approach him.

"What exactly are you doing?" I said, and Mako looked up.

"Oh, morning, Lei, I'm looking for the remote detonator," Mako replied, as he kept looking.

"Why?" I asked curiously.

"A ship was attacked really early in the morning, and that ship had Asami's shipment of mechatanks. Lin is with the witness right now, and asked him a few questions about the bomb. They think its the Northern Water tribe but the witness said the bomb was different in a way that it looked like it was detonated," Mako explained.

"Like the bombing at the cultural center," I said, as I got what he was trying to say.

"Found it!" Mako exclaimed, as he held a small box with the picture of the suspect and the detonator.

Mako and I started running to the interrogation room, since Lin and the witness were still there. He explained to me the situation as we kept running. When we entered the room,  I saw the witness sitting down on the table, with Lin and the detectives beside him. Mako stepped in front of the table, and I went by his side.

"Chief, we think there is a link to this attack and to the attack at the cultural center," Mako said confidently, as he placed the box in front of the witness.

"What do you think you're doing?" Lin said angrily, as she crossed her arms.

"Solving this case," Mako sassed.

"Did any of the people that attack you have something like this in their hands?" Mako explained.

"We think it's a remote detonator," I added.

"It was too dark to see anything," the witness said.

"Mako! Lei!" Lin warned.

"Chief! I don't think that the Northern Water Tribe were responsible for this," Mako said.

"Of course, they're responsible for this, they were waterbenders!" one of the detectives said.

"Doesn't mean they were waterbenders, doesn't automatically mean they were responsible for this," I retorted.

"Was this one of the guys that attacked?" Mako asked, as he placed the picture of the suspect in front of the witness.

"No, I don't recognize him," the witness said.

"Oh, so embarrassing," one of the detectives said, I glared at him.

"Nice try, rookies," the other detective said.

"Mako, Lei, Leave now," Lin warned.

Suddenly, Varrick and Asami stepped inside the room. I sent her a reassuring smile, that she returned.

"Great work everybody! Another one shot case for the dynamic mustache duo!" Varrick exclaimed, I raised my eyebrow to protest.

"Wait, I think Mako and Lei might be on to something," Asami said.

"Chief, I know it's a long shot, but I have an idea of how we can catch these guys," Mako said.

"Yeah, let's all listen to the rookies," one of the detectives said, I glared at him.

"He's doing a better job than you," Asami retorted, I smirked at her.

"Call us rookies again, and I'll show you what a rookie can do," I warned, as I put a fist to my palm.

"Whooooooo's hungry?" Varrick said, out of the blue.

"ENOUGH!" Lin shouted angrily.

"I don't want to hear any of your lame rookie ideas, you're a beat cop," Lin said, as she pointed at Mako.

"And you, you're here temporarily, so if you wanna be on Mako's side then fine, you can be his partner in crime for all I care. Now, both of you hit the street and do your job!," Lin added, as she pointed at me.

The detectives started laughing at us, and I was clenching my fists to avoid throwing a fire comet at them. With that, Mako, Asami, and I stepped outside, looking annoyed more than ever. Three of us stood at the entrance of the police station.

"Lu and Gung are idiots, I hate them and they're stupid mustaches," Mako said angrily. I exhaled sharply.

"They're lucky that Beifong was in there, otherwise they wouldn't even have mustaches by now," I commented.

"Forget them, whats your idea, Mako?" Asami asked, we both looked at Mako.

"A sting operation, let's take a bait ship out in the middle of the ocean and capture who ever attacks it," Mako explained, I raised my eyebrow questioningly.

"Let's do it!" Asami exlaimed.

"It's not that easy, in order to do this, we need the police and Beifong already said no," Mako said.

"If we do plan on doing this, we're basically going behind Beifong's back. Mako could get kicked out of the force, and I was starting actually like this job," I said.

"We can do it, just the three of us," Asami said encouragingly.

Mako and I exchanged unsure looks. We really didn't wanna lose our jobs, but we also didn't want to upset Asami.

"Look, My mom is gone, and my dad is in jail. Future industries is the only thing I have left of my family," Asami said softly.

"I'm sure we would love to help you, but we don't have the means to do it," Mako said.

"And where would we even plan to get a bait ship anyway?" I questioned.

"You want a ship? I got a ship!" Someone said from behind me.

I got startled, and shot a fire punch at the person. I noticed it was Varrick and he immediately dodged from my attack.

"Don't scare us like that!" I yelled, as Varrick dusted the side of his shoulder.

"I want in on what you're talking about, and I love being in on things," Varrick said.

"The less you know the better," Asami said.

"Perfect! I love not knowing things!" Varrick exclaimed, I raised my eyebrow, as we started following him.

Am I the only one who finds him odd?
