Book 4 ~ Chapter 9

President Raiko has started preparations and planned meetings on how to deal with the Kuvira situation as things get tense. Team Avatar gathers at City Hall to attend a meeting to discuss their next move against Kuvira. Mako and Lei arrive together at City Hall, along with Prince Wu. As they enter the vine-covered building, they spot Korra and Asami talking at the end of the hall.

"Hey, guys," Asami greets, Mako and Lei with warm hugs. They hadn't seen each other for a while with all the things going on and Asami being busy working on her company. Even though they live at her mansion, they barely see her around.

"So, I heard you've been working with Raiko, building weapons against Kuvira," Lei starts, as she crossed her arms. Asami deeply sighs.

"Not only Raiko, but Varrick too," Asami says, with disappointment. They understood why Asami would felt that way. She is working with the man who brought her company down, she continues, "Raiko says that he needs the two most brilliant minds,"

"I mean, he's not wrong. You're smart and maybe Varrick is a bit crazy, but his inventions along with yours are actually what we need right now," Lei says, Asami nods in agreement.

"I know, if it means saving Republic City, then I'll work with him," Asami says, Lei smiles.

"I hope you didn't forget me," a familiar voice said from behind them. Lei turned around to see her old friend, Kun. She raised her eyebrows in surprise and makes a dash towards him. Mako scowls as soon as he turns around.

"Kun!" Lei shouts excitedly, as she hugs him tightly, Kun smiles and hugs her back, "It's so good to see you!"

"Alright, enough, with the proximity," Mako warns, as he walks over to Lei, pulling her by the waist and towards him. Kun smiles innocently and rubs his head in embarrassment.

"You guys still going strong, huh?" Kun laughs.

"Yeah, we are. Remember it well," Mako warns, tightening his grip on Lei's waist. Lei rolled her eyes and playfully hit him.

"What are you doing here?" Lei asks curiously.

"He's helping me and Varrick on our new build idea. Varrick suggested him right away to Raiko, and brought him here," Asami explains.

"I was on vacation, but I figured helping Team Avatar was more important," Kun joked, causing the others to laugh.

"Oh, good. You're all here, come on, we'll start the meeting," Tenzin says, as he arrived with Varrick. The group entered Raiko's office to see him sitting down on his desk. They face towards the President and bowed upon his presence.

"The borders are secure and troops are guarding the rail lines into the city. So, what have you geniuses come up with to fend off Kuvira?" Raiko starts, looking at Asami, Varrick, and Kun.

"It's a flying mecha suit!" Varrick shouts enthusiastically, as Asami rolls out the blueprints. He continues, "Asami got the idea from watching dragonfly-hummingbirds. You can take off straight up, fly in any direction—,"

"Where does the spirit ray come out?" Raiko asks impatiently, Asami and Varrick raise their eyebrows.

"It doesn't have a spirit ray. I'm telling you what I told Kuvira. That technology should not be used," Varrick says in a serious manner

"It's already being used by Kuvira! I need spirit vine weapons, and I need them now!" Raiko says aggressively, as he stand up from his desk. Lei furrowed her eyebrows at the president, she understood that he's trying to protect the city, but that isn't the way.

"No! It was Kuvira's harvesting of the vines in the swamp that caused the Republic City vines to go crazy and grab all those people," Korra explains.

"You're supposed to be the bridge between the two worlds. Why can't you harvest the vines?" Raiko retorts.

"I won't do that. But, maybe since the spirits love Republic City so much, I can convince them to help us defend it somehow," Korra suggest, Raiko nods, approving Korra's suggestion.

"Okay, maybe while the weapon geniuses and the spirit bridge are getting ready for battle, we should be evacuating the ordinary citizens so that if Kuvira attacks, they won't be hurt," Wu suggests, stepping in front of the crowd. Mako and Lei exchanged surprised glances at each other.

"That's actually a good idea," Raiko admits, Wu smiles, he continues, "Prince Wu, you work with the police to coordinate getting people out of the city. Now everyone get to it. I want daily updates,"

Everyone bows before they were dismissed to accomplish their assigned tasks. Lei walks out last with Mako and Wu, waving goodbye to Kun, who was heading off with Asami and Varrick. Lei then turned to Wu.

"Nice job in there. I'm proud of you. You're starting to act like the kind of king I'd like to work for," Mako says truthfully, as he stops walking to face Wu.

"Yeah, your idea will ensure the safety of the people even if Kuvira doesn't attack," Lei adds, Wu smiles.

"Thanks, guys. And if Korra buys this 'man of the people' thing, I still might get to date her," Prince Wu says, Lei snorts.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding me," Lei mutters under her breath, Mako raises his eyebrow at him.

"You always have to ruin it," Mako sighs.

"What? Come on! Why do you think guys do anything great? To pick up girls," Wu starts, Lei raises her eyebrows and crosses her arms, as he continues, "Every work of art, every song, every city evacuation, all for the ladies,"

Lei rolled her eyes and pushed both of them aside lightly, walking between them, saying as she walked away from them, "Men,"

A couple days later, Team Avatar accomplished their assigned tasks. Asami, Varrick, and Kun have been working hard in Asami's factory, building the mechasuits. Korra had tried to reason with the spirits, but they refused to take part in the war. Mako and Lei have been working ten-fold at the station, preparing for the evacuation, since Chief Beifong was nowhere to be found. Raiko had asked them to gather at City Hall for a meeting to get updates on the tasks. They sat around a coffee table, Mako and Lei sat next to each other with Raiko and Wu in front of them. While Korra and Tenzin on the other opposite ends.

"How's the evacuation coming?" Korra asks, turning to Prince Wu.

"Could be better. At this point, we've evacuated almost 18 families," Prince Wu answers, Korra raises her eyebrows in disbelief.

"Only 18? There are millions of people in this city," Korra says, Wu frowned.

"I said it could be better," Prince Wu says.

"We're trying to go as fast as we can, Korra. The problem is that its a voluntary evacuation and there haven't been any volunteers," Lei explains.

"They just don't feel like they're in any immediate danger," Mako adds. Suddenly, the door bursts open to reveal Bolin, behind him are Cheif Beifong, Suyin, and Zhu Li.

"Guys! Good! You're all here," Bolin shouts happily, as he steps inside. Raiko furrows his eyebrow and stands up.

"What's with you interrupting my important meetings all the time?" Raiko complains, Bolin laughs innocently. Korra's face brightens up as she sees Suyin.

"Su! What are you— You're okay!" Korra says, as she hugs Suyin, who hugs back, "I'm so sorry about Zaofu. How did you escape?"

"Opal, Beifong, and I rescued everyone but we had a run in with Kuvira. We saw her super spirit weapon up close. Like, really close. Way too close," Bolin says, as shivers run down his spine.

"Is she going to use it against Republic City?" Tenzin asks tensely, Zhu Li steps up.

"Yes, I found out she's going to attack in two weeks," Zhu Li answers, Bolin turns to Tenzin.

"Oh! And Zhu Li is on our side now. Actually, she never really switched sides and I'm just gonna let her explain the whole thing. Zhu Li?" Bolin explains, turning to Zhu Li.

"I pretended to be loyal to Kuvira so I could sabotage her weapon. It didn't work, but I did overhear her plans to attack," Zhu Li explains, Raiko groans.

"I knew she wouldn't stop at Zaofu," Raiko says.

"My guess is, she's coming by rail. It's the only way she can transport that weapon," Chief Beifong says.

"Then we'll cut the rail lines," Korra suggests, Raiko nods in agreement.

"I agree. But let's get as many citizens evacuated before we do," Raiko starts, then turns to Mako and Lei, as he continues, "Put out the announcement. The evacuation is now mandatory,"

"We're on it," Mako and Lei say simultaneously, standing up to salute the President.

"Don't worry, Mr. President. I won't let Kuvira take our city," Korra says strongly and confidently, Raiko nods trusting the Avatar.

᯽♡𓆉♡᯽

Mako and Lei made their way to the Republic City Police Station, along with Chief Beifong and Prince Wu, to broadcast the announcement to the citizens of Republic City. The operator plugs in a cord into the wall, and turns to Mako, who was sitting down next to her, with Lei, Chief Beifong, and Prince Wu standing behind him.

"We're patched in on the emergency broadcast line. You're going out to every radio in the city," the Operator says, Mako nods and turns to the mic.

"Attention citizens of Republic City, this is not a test. An attack in our city is imminent. President Raiko has ordered a mandatory evacuation for all citizens. Please find your evacuation handbooks and turn to sub-section 1-26," Mako announces, at that note, the telephone switchboards starts ringing multiple times, but Mako continued, "There you will find initial instructions for your area,"

As Mako continued to make the announcement, dozens of rings came by. Lei and Chief Beifong exchanged glances at each other, thinking that Mako could have worded it better. Lei turned to Mako, and placed a hand on his shoulder, "Mako,"

"For example, if you live in northwest-vector-one, report to your primary meeting location which would be at the eastern entrance of the southern water tribe library. There, you will choose a leader as specified in section 1-28," Mako continues, not minding Lei. Chief Beifong rubs her forehead.

"Uh, Chief, we're getting confused calls from all over the city. I think Mako's starting a panic," the Operator says, turning to the Chief. Mako furrows his eyebrows.

"What's confusing? I'm giving very specific instructions," Mako retorts, Lei sighs deeply and taps his back.

"Great, this is just what we need," Chief Beifong complains.

"I got this," Prince Wu says, exchanging places with Mako, who frowned and crossed his arms. Lei rolled her eyes at him and rubbed his back as Wu sat in front of the mic.

"Hello, everyone. This is Prince Wu. Now, I know you're all a little scared. Believe me, I know what it's like to be afraid. I used to not be able to go to the bathroom by myself. But if we let that fear control us, none of us will ever be able to go to the bathroom," Wu starts, Lei smiles feeling proud that he's trying his best to lead with his own style, he continued, "And then, we all lose. But the people of Republic City aren't losers. We're winners. Winners that are going to get out of this city in a calm and orderly fashion. So I want you to grab your family, grab your neighbor, grab that guy down the street you don't know very well and head to the nearest bus, train, or ferry station. We're going to get you out of here, safe and sound,"

Thanks to Wu's speech, all the lights and rings coming in to the radio station were all flickering off. Chief Beifong and the two detectives were impressed by his gesture.

"Good job, kid. You might not make such a bad king after all," Chief Beifong says as he turns to the prince, Prince Wu smiles brightly.

Hours after the announcement had been made, Mako and Lei have been busy evacuating everyone in the city through trains, ferry, and busses. Mako and Prince Wu headed down to the train station to assist with the evacuation there. Lei lead her Republic City Unit to the docks to assist with the Ferry evacuation.

"I want officers stationed at that south side, its going too slow, we need to finish these batch of people by tonight," Lei orders, turning to one of her officers, who salutes her and runs off. Lei spots a familiar red Sato mobile stopping at the docks along with a handful of guards coming her way with her Aunt in the middle of them.

"I'm not going to be able to convince you to come with me, am I?" Izumi asks, Lei smiles and shakes her head.

"I have to stay in Republic City, they need me here," Lei says softly, Izumi sighs and nods, bringing her niece into a warm embrace.

"Stay safe," Izumi says, as she pulls away from the hug, tucking a strand of hair behind Lei's ear. Lei nods in response. Izumi boarded the Fire Nation boat, bidding her niece farewell. Meanwhile, Lei spent the entire day evacuating dozens of the citizens out of the city. It was nightfall, she spotted an armada of battleships and airships that had just arrived at the docks. Lei stood welcoming the soldiers from the United Forces that arrived to assist the battle and defense of the City, with her Squad Unit standing behind her. Lei spotted her cousin, Iroh II walking towards her. Iroh II salutes Lei and her quadrant, who salute back.

"I see you have your own unit over there to lead," Iroh II says, smiling at his cousin. Lei chuckles.

"You have a whole army, General," Lei laughs, as she hugs her cousin tightly, "It's been quite a while,"

"I know, too long. I wish it wasn't under these circumstances. Where's my mother?" Iroh II asks, as they pull away from the embrace.

"She left hours ago, she should be on the way to the Fire Nation," Lei answers, Iroh II nods.

"I'm not surprised you didn't go with her," Iroh II says, crossing his arms. Lei chuckles.

"Well, you know our family, if theres a war, we are always somehow involved," Lei smiles, Iroh II smiles.

That week, the Officials have been working hard day and night preparing for Kuvira's arrival. United Forces airships and battleships covered the borders of the city. While mechasuits and United Forces soldiers were stationed at the east side of the city, where Kuvira would attack from. Mako and Lei had successfully evacuated most of the city, giving them extra time for them to train. Lei found herself on Air Temple Island, in the courtyard to work on her bending forms. Kaya laying down on the side watching her.

Lei closed her eyes, taking a deep breath in then exhaling deeply. She wanted to try lightning bending, after three years and after Korra got the remaining poison out of her, but a part of her was scared. However, she knew she had to get rid of this fear soon, or she may never be able to lightning bend again. It was a part of her after all, it was what made her such a master in firebending. She took a deep breath and started with the first bending move. She pointed two fingers, making a circle in front of her in slow movement. It generated lightning, and for a second, she felt whole again. Until, her eyes shot open, and she suddenly sees visions of the Fire Nation in ruins and ash just like her nightmares. She suddenly releases the charged lightning to the sky, causing thunder to roar loudly. She drops down on her knees breathing heavily, Kaya runs over to her catching her from falling hard. Mako, Korra, Asami, and Bolin ran to the courtyard upon hearing the thunder. Mako runs faster as he spots Lei on the ground. He kneels down in front of her as the others just managed to catch up to him.

"Lei, are you okay?" Mako asks worriedly, examining her. Lei breathes heavily and looks up at him.

"I tried to lightning bend, but the visions are too much," Lei cried, Mako sighs and pulls her into his arms, comforting her and soothing her.

"But the poison was already out of you, I thought after Korra took it out you would feel better," Asami asks, as Mako helps Lei stand up.

"I thought so too but I can't control it. It keeps giving me visions. I think its trying to tell me something. I think I need to go back to the Fire Nation," Lei says, Mako raises his eyebrows at her.

"Now? We need you here, Lei," Mako says.

"I didn't mean I'd leave now, but I need to go after this whole Kuvira situation is over. This whole thing with my bending has confused me enough. I won't find my answers here," Lei answers, Mako nods.

"Well, you already know I'm coming with you," Mako says, Lei smiles. Korra walks up to her.

"So will we," Korra says, with Bolin and Asami smiling behind her. Lei smiles at her supportive friends, she didn't know what she'd do without them.

"Thank you, guys, I appreciate it," Lei says softly, standing up by herself steadily, she continues, "So, what's our plan with Kuvira?"

"I was thinking we could travel to Zaofu and destroy the weapon before it even gets here," Korra starts.

"If that weapon gets here, Republic City is doomed. It's a large machine so it would need to be transported here somehow," Bolin explains.

"Well, we'd need to talk to Raiko and Tenzin about it," Mako says, Lei nods.

"They should be in the tower, Raiko was stationed there for his own safety," Lei explains, Korra nods as she starts making her way to the tower, the rest of Team Avatar following behind her.

President Raiko along with other guards were stationed at the top of tower in Air Temple Island. Tenzin and Chief Beifong insisted this precaution for his protection.

"I still don't like having the idea to abandon my office in the city," Raiko says, as he turns to Lin and Tenzin behind him.

"Air Temple Island is the ideal location for your base of operations and you'll be safe here," Lin explains.

"There's something we need to discuss with you," Korra says, as she and the rest of Team Avatar emerge from the stairs. Tenzin turns to them.

"What is it?" Tenzin asks.

"The five of us have been talking and we want to take out Kuvira's spirit weapon before it gets too close to the city," Korra starts, Tenzin furrows his eyebrows.

"That sounds like a risk we don't need to take. The evacuation is on schedule and General Iroh is getting his army in place," Tenzin says seriously.

Korra shook her head, "I know Iroh can go toe to toe with Kuvira's army, but that weapon—,"

"It's too powerful! It can destroy the city," Bolin interrupts, Mako nods in agreement.

"We can't let it get to our doorstep," Mako adds.

"If we destroy the weapon now, we can stop a battle before it even starts," Lei supports.

"We'll sneak behind enemy lines and disable the weapon," Korra explains the plan.

"If it works, it'll even the playing field," Asami concluded, Tenzin shook his head.

"But if you get caught—,"

"It's worth the risk," Korra cuts Tenzin off.

"I agree. And it might be our only shot at preventing an all-out war. Good luck," Raiko speaks up, Lin and Tenzin turning to him.

"We'll head out tonight," Korra says.

It was nightfall, Team Avatar was preparing to leave to take out the weapon. Korra borrowed Oogie from Tenzin, carrying supplies they might need for the trip. Lei stood a couple meters away from Oogie, looking over at the view of Republic City, admiring it. Mako noticed her and walked over to her.

"Its so beautiful, it reminds me of the first time I ever arrived in Republic City. All the lights were on and lively from the Arena, the streets were busy with thousands of people. And now, Kuvira is on her way to destroy it all," Lei starts, she turns to him, "Mako, I just want you to know that if we don't make it out of this alive—,"

"We will, don't say that. All of us will get out alive after this whole thing, alright?" Mako says, as he cups her cheeks. Lei smiles and nods.

"I love you," Lei says softly, Mako leans in and gives her a sweet kiss.

"I love you too," Mako smiles.

᯽♡𓆉♡᯽

That night, Team Avatar boarded Oogie with Korra riding at the front. Each of them took a side to watch for any signs of Kuvira's army. Eventually, the sun started rising and they were a couple miles away from Republic City. Korra flew Oogie from the front, while the rest stayed on the saddle. Mako and Lei were on the left side trying to spot anything in the distance, with Bolin and Asami on the other side.

Bolin was looking through his telescope then gasped when he spotted something, "Guys, I see something. Down there!"

Just behind a few mountains they spotted moving figures in the distance. They looked closer to see an armada of mechatanks making their way in the city's direction. Asami squints to look closer, "Is that?"

"Kuvira," Korra says sternly, "She's already crossed into United Republic territory, she's a week early,"

"This doesn't make sense, there aren't any train tracks this way. How are they transporting that super weapon of theirs?" Mako asks confused. Suddenly, they hear a loud mechanical thud. And from the side of the mountain, a mechanical giant that was a thousand feet tall emerged into their vision.

"Apparently on a giant mecha suit!" Asami shouts, as she looks over at the giant. Lei has never seen an invention quite like that before, shes seen many things but this was entirely new.

"Did you know Kuvira was building that thing?" Mako asks, as he turns to Bolin.

"Oh, did I forget to mention it? No! Of course, I didn't know!" Bolin says sassily. Just as they turn to the giant mechasuit, it takes a step back facing itself towards them. It aims its gun, attached to its right arm, towards Oogie and Team Avatar. A large purple glow emerges from the gun.

Bolin raises his eyebrows, "I know what happens next. We gotta get out of here now. Now!"

Korra nods her head and drives Oogie away from its aim. As Oogie flys away, Lei looks back at the giant and sees that a strong beam shoots out from the gun causing Oogie to dodge sideways and Team Avatar to hold on to the saddle tightly. Lei looks back at the giant, noticing its aiming at them once more.

"Korra! Head for that mountain!" Lei shouts quickly, Korra listens to her and steers Oogie towards the mountain, just as another beam shoots out from the giant. However, the beam was blocked by the mountain.

"Quick thinking, Lei," Asami comments, "We have to get back to Republic City and warn them,"

᯽♡𓆉♡᯽

Team Avatar ventures back to Republic City as fast as they could, with Kuvira's army and mechasuit following behind them. As they arrive back in Republic City, they head towards Air Temple Island and land in the courtyard, where Tenzin and the other world leaders were waiting for them. Korra safely landed Oogie, Team Avatar getting off and running towards the World Leaders

"Korra, are you all right? Why are you back so soon?" Tenzin asks worriedly, as Team Avatar stops in front of them.

"It's Kuvira. Our intel was wrong. She must've known Zhu Li had the information," Korra answers.

"What are you trying to say?" Raiko asks impatiently.

"Kuvira's army is only a few hours away," Korra says, Tenzin furrows his eyebrows.

"No, they can't be. We're not ready," Tenzin says in a serious tone.

"And that spirit weapon of hers is attached to a giant mechasuit. It's over 25 stories tall," Korra explains. Raiko turns to Chief Beifong.

"Get General Iroh on the line and tell him the attack is happening today. We need to lock down this city," Raiko orders, Chief Beifong nods and runs off.

"Pema, find Wu and get the remaining citizens to safety immediately. We can't have innocent lives in jeopardy," Tenzin says as he turns to Pema, who nods and runs off as well.

"What should we do?" Bolin asks.

"Let's go to my factory. Maybe we can get a few of those suits up and running," Asami answers.

"We're coming with you," Su says to Asami, who nods in response.

"I'll head to the front lines and help General Iroh," Korra says, Lei walks over to her and placed her hand on her shoulder.

"I'll go with you, I wanna make sure Iroh is okay," Lei says, Mako steps forward.

"I'm coming too, then," Mako says, Lei turns to him and shakes her head.

"Go with Asami and the others, I'll be right behind you, I promise," Lei says, as she takes his hand. Mako sighed and nods, knowing there was no time for argument.

᯽♡𓆉♡᯽

Korra and Lei make their way to the front lines where General Iroh's army was stationed. As they arrived they saw multiple tents, in front of it, a thousand soldiers with different bending styles all positioned for defense. In front of them were barred wires, which should slow down any mechatanks. Although, both Lei and Korra knew that wouldn't be enough to stop the giant mechasuit. Korra and Lei made their way to the front of the tents, where they saw General Iroh.

"Iroh!" Lei shouts, as she runs up to him. Iroh turns back and raised his eyebrows in surprise.

"What are you doing here? The attack is today, you shouldn't be here," Iroh says, in a serious tone, towards his cousin. Lei sighs at his brotherly concern for her. Korra catches up to Lei.

"We're here to support the front lines from Kuvira," Korra explains, General Iroh sighs and nods.

"I've heard of what's coming our way," Iroh says, referring to the giant mechasuit that Lin must've informed him about.

"Then you know why I'm here," Korra says, General Iroh nods. That moment, they hear a mechanical thud from the distance causing the ground to shake momentarily. The girls and Iroh turn towards the front lines. And from the mountains, emerged Kuvira's army and the giant mechasuit. Iroh raises his eyebrows in surprise, looking at the opponent. They run inside a tent, Iroh turns on the radio, to a channel that connects Raiko to Kuvira.

"Kuvira, this is President Raiko. Surrender or we will attack. Turn your army around and leave," Raiko says sternly, from one side of the channel.

Kuvira scoffs confidently, "You are in no position to give orders,"

"Stand down or well attack," Raiko says.

"I don't think you understand the power I possess. Let me make it clear," Kuvira says strongly, at the same time, the mechasuit aims its gun towards the Republic City Bay. Korra, Lei, and Iroh run out of the tent to witness as the mechasuit blasts multiple times, destroying all the ships docked at the bay. The mechasuit redirects its aim towards the soldiers, Lei and Iroh gasp. Iroh grabs the radio and channels towards the President.

"Mr. President, do I have your order to engage?" Iroh asks, Lei looks at Korra worriedly, wondering what an army of benders could do against a giant mechasuit.

"You have three seconds or I wipe out your army," Kuvira says, after a few moments, they hear Raiko's response.

"Stop. We surrender, Republic City is yours," Raiko sighs in defeat. Korra and Lei exchanged worried glances and turns to Iroh.

"Good. Turn your army and the Avatar over to me and give Baatar your location. We'll present you with our terms," Kuvira says, Iroh slams the radio.

"I'm not surrendering," Korra says strongly, Iroh turns to both of them.

"Get back to the city before she sees you," Korra nods, Lei turns to Iroh, who looks at her worriedly.

"I'll see you after this whole thing, okay?" Lei says to him, Iroh smiles and nods before hugging her. She pulls away and makes her way to Korra's side.

"And Korra, Find a way to beat that thing," Iroh says, Korra nods before she and Lei run off.

᯽♡𓆉♡᯽

Korra and Lei quickly made their way to Asami's factory, where they'd inform the others of the news. When they arrived, they saw everyone huddled together. Everyone turns to them as they entered. Mako turns to Lei immediately, she smiles softly at him, assuring him she's fine.

"Raiko surrendered," Korra starts, "It's down to us now,"

"How are we supposed to fight an entire army, a mecha giant, and that crazy weapon?" Bolin asks exaggeratingly, Asami turns to him.

"We can't fight it but maybe we can cripple it," Asami starts, then turns to Zhu Li, "Zhu Li, when you were spying on Kuvira, did you learn anything about that metal monster?"

"I had no idea they were even building it," Zhu Li answers.

"Guess Baatar Jr. is a better inventor than I thought. Don't tell him I said that," Varrick says sternly.

"That's it!" Korra gasps, "Baatar Jr. built it. He'll know how to take it down. I say we capture him and get him to talk,"

Tenzin hums thinkingly, Korra turns to him, "I know it's a long shot but it's the only chance we have and if we don't—,"

"Korra. I'm in," Tenzin cuts her off, Korra smiles.

"We'll need a stealth team of airbenders to get in and out of Baatar's airship unnoticed," Korra starts, then turns towards the airbenders, "Tenzin, Bumi, Jinora, Kai. Let's get moving,"

"What about me?" Meelo says, disappointingly. Korra smiles and kneels down to him.

"Sorry buddy, but this mission counts on everyone being as silent as possible. And your farts are just too much of a wild card," Korra explains.

"I can be quiet!" Meelo shouts, just as he released a small fart, he sighs, "Okay, point taken,"

Korra was getting ready for the stealth mission, waiting for the other airbenders to be prepared. Lei notices her at the corner of the room and walks up to her.

"You're not the same Avatar I knew a few years ago, this one is much stronger and can make good and decisive decisions," Lei starts, as she stops in front of her, Korra smiles, "I guess you don't need me anymore,"

"I've changed because of you, Lei. You've taught me a lot since we've met, and in those three years I was gone, I learned things the hard way myself. I may not need you as a mentor anymore or a babysitter..." Korra and Lei laugh together, "But, I'll always need you as my friend,"

Lei smiles and gives her a tight hug and whispers in her ear, "Be careful,"

᯽♡𓆉♡᯽

After an hour of waiting for the stealth team, they arrive back with a Baatar Jr. in a bag, struggling to get out. Korra takes him out of the bag and positions him on a chair, with his hands tied up behind him.

"You've made a terrible mistake! Once Kuvira finds out I'm missing you're all done for," Baatar Jr. pants.

"That's why before she finds out, you're going to tell us how to stop that mecha giant, or else," Korra says strongly, crossing her arms together.

"Or else, what?" Baatar challenges, Korra narrows her eyes at him before her eyes glow into the Avatar state. She makes her way over to him and lift his chair into the air, Baatar Jr. whimpers.

"You won't hurt me. I know an empty threat when I see one," Baatar Jr. says confidently, Korra groans and puts him down.

"Was this your best idea?" Baatar Jr. chuckles.

"If you wanna see what a real threat sounds like, let me try," Lei challenges, Baatar Jr. scoffs.

"You've lost. Only you haven't accepted it yet," Baatar Jr. counters.

"Let me talk to him," Su says, Korra nods. Su walks over to her son and kneels down in front of him.

"Baatar," Su says.

"If you think I'm going to spill all my secrets to you, Mother, you're sadly mistaken," Baatar Jr. says.

"Why are you doing this? I know you set out to help better the world but this is madness," Su tries.

"It's madness to let others take whats yours and accept it blindly. The United Republic belongs to us and we're taking it back," Baatar Jr. explains strongly.

"But at what cost? How many people have to lose their lives before Kuvira is satisfied?" Su asks him.

"It doesn't have to cost any lives if you would all just surrender. All that Kuvira and I want is a united Earth Empire," Baatar Jr. counters.

"I don't know what I did to hurt you, but whatever it was, I'm sorry. When you left Zaofu, it broke me heart. And our family has never been the same since. Please, Baatar. Stop all of this and come home. We want you back with us," Su says softly, Baatar Jr. looks straight into his mother's eyes.

"Kuvira is my family now," Baatar Jr. says, Su closes her eyes and lets out tears upon his hurtful words.

"We're going about this all wrong," Korra says, as she turns to Tenzin. Korra walks towards Baatar Jr. as Su walks back to her family.

"You're right, I'm not going to physically hurt you if you don't talk but there is something I can do that will be even more painful. I will take away the one thing you care for the most, Kuvira," Korra says intimidatingly, as she rests both her arms on the armrests of the chairs and stares intently at Baatar Jr, who narrows his eyes at her.

"What do you mean?" Baatar Jr. asks.

"Kuvira might win. She might chase us out of the city but you won't be around to enjoy the victory. Because wherever I run, I'll take you. I'm going to make it my life's mission to never let you see the one you love again. Is taking the city worth losing Kuvira forever?" Korra taunts, Lei was impressed with her skills to threaten him.

"You can't!" Baatar Jr. shouts.

"I will. Unless you convince Kuvira to back off. You two will still have the Earth Empire. Just leave the United Republic alone," Korra counters, crossing her arms together. Baatar Jr. stares intently at her and thinks about her offer.

"I'll do it," Baatar Jr. sighs in defeat. Korra gets the radio channel from Mako and tunes it into the channel that will connect them to Kuvira. Korra holds the radio and holds it next to Baatar's face.

"Kuvira, it's Baatar. I've been captured. My airship was ambushed and I was taken by force. Korra refuses to release me unless we back down and leave the city," Baatar Jr. explains, Lei looks out the window as she sees the giant mechasuit in the distance, with Mako leaning against the window next to her.

"Are you injured?" Kuvira asks.

"I'm fine," Baatar Jr. answers.

"Is the Avatar there with you now?" Kuvira asks.

"Yes, everyone is here," Baatar Jr. answers once more, he pauses, "Listen to me. If you try to take Republic City, the Avatar will never let me see you again and I refuse to live that way. Forget the United Republic. We have our empire. We have each other. Let's go back home and get married. What matters is that we'll be together for the rest of our lives,"

"You're right, this city isn't worth sacrificing our life together. I love you, Baatar," Kuvira says strongly, as she cuts the channel. Lei raises her eyebrow questioningly. Mako turns to her.

"What's wrong?" Mako asks her.

"As soon as we work out terms with Kuvira, we'll let you out of here," Korra says to Baatar, from behind them. Lei sighs as she looks out the window.

"Something feels off, she surrendered so quickly after all she's achieved ," Lei whispers, she narrows her eyes towards the mechasuit and notices it's directing its aim towards the factory. Lei widens her eyes and nudges Mako quickly to look.

"Guys! She must have our location. She's pointing that weapon right at us!" Mako shouts to the group worriedly.

"No, she wouldn't," Baatar Jr. says, with a hurtful tone. As the gun gets ready to shoot towards them, it glows a bright purple.

"Everyone out. Now! Now!" Korra shouts loudly, as the beam shoots out from the gun. Mako takes Lei's hand and runs with the group as they try to make an escape. The beam hits the building, creating explosions and debris to fall right on the team.
