Book 1 ~ Chapter 30

✨•~~~~~~~~•✨
LEIs POV

Tahno and I were walking through an underground tunnel. He was leading me to where Korra was. It made sense, the edge of Republic City are large pipes, they must've went through them to avoid being spotted by equalists.

"Where exactly does this tunnel lead to?" I asked.

"A resistance camp, I've been taking people here to protect them from the equalists. It was Korra's idea," Tahno replied.

"How are they?" I asked. Tahno looked at me.

"You mean Korra and her friends? They've been hanging around here since the attack," Tahno replied.

"Actually, I was surprised to see you up there. I thought you were still captured," Tahno added.

"I had to escape that hell hole, sometime," I said.

"Did he take away your bending?" Tahno asked, and I felt my heart break.

"Yeah, he did," I said softly. Tahno put his hand on my shoulder.

"It's gonna be alright, Lei, everything will be fine once you get used to it," Tahno said.

"Before, you said you've been through every healer in the city, and nothing worked?" I said softly.

"Yeah, I tried everything," Tahno sighed. I raised my eyebrows.

"Not everything," I said, Tahno raised an eyebrow.

"Katara, she's the best healer in the world, she has to help us," I said with hope in my voice.

"And if it doesn't work?" Tahno asked. I frowned.

"Then, I wasted half of my life on training to be someone I can no longer be," I replied softly.

We continued walking through the tunnel, until we reached an open area filled with tents. This must be the Resistance camp. I looked around, from where I was standing, and couldn't see Korra and the others.

"Korra and her friends are at the end of the Resistance Camp, I need to go, I still need to do my job up there," Tahno said. I turned to him.

"Thank you, Tahno," I said, he smiled lightly, and went back down the tunnel.

Suddenly, everyone's eyes were on me. I forgot that they know what I look like. I walked slowly into the camp, with Kaya walking by my side. After a few moments, everyone crowded around me, just staring at me.

MAKOs POV

Ever since the attack, we've been staying in this underground camp, planning out our attack. Korra and I were walking down the tunnel. We just came from a rally, disguised in equalist clothes. We were on our way back to the Resistance Camp.

"Can you believe Hiroshi? 'The avatar's on the run' I'm not running from anyone," Korra said annoyed.

"I'm gonna go up there, and knock some sense into them, then they'll know what hit em," Korra said, as she turned around but I stopped her.

"Relax, General Iroh is coming back with an entire fleet of battleships, then Amon will be the one running," I said.

"I hate this whole patience, I can't wait any longer. I just wanna get Lei back," Korra said.

"I miss her too, Korra, but we can't do anything against Amon without the United Forces," I said softly. She sighed.

We continued our way back to the camp. I saw Asami and Bolin sitting together with Pabu. They saw us coming, and they approached us.

"You two were gone awhile," Asami said.

"We were doing reconnaissance," I said sternly, I still had issues to work with her.

"Whatever," Asami muttered, and looked away.

"Oh my spirits," Asami breathed out, as she ran to the direction she looked at.

I looked in the direction and saw a crowd of people. I raised an eyebrow and looked at Korra. She started walking as well to check what all the commotion was all about. We pushed through the crowd and made it to the front, and what I saw in the middle of it, made my heart beat so fast.

It was Lei.

LEIs POV

These people started crowding me out of nowhere. I held onto Kaya, and was about to continue my way when I saw Mako at the front of the crowd. I widened my eyes, when I saw him. Soon, Asami, Bolin, and Korra were right next to him as well, with shocked expressions on their faces. Mako ran up to me and embraced me. I hesitated before hugging him back as well. I didn't expect this kind of reaction from him, of all people.

"I missed you," Mako whispered into my ear. I smiled.

"I missed you too," I said softly, as I pulled away from him.

I locked eyes with Korra, as she approached me slowly. She had tears in her eyes, and I smiled. I opened my arms for her to hug me, and she embraced me tightly.

"Thank the spirits, you're okay," Korra sighed in relief.

"I had to escape sometime, right?" I smiled.

Asami hugged me after I pulled away from Korra. I smiled at her, as I pulled away. Then I saw Bolin who embraced me so tightly, that my arms were trapped and he picked me up.

"I missed you so much, Lei," Bolin cried, I chuckled.

"I missed you too, Bolin," I said, as he put me down.

Korra had a worried expression on her face, and I raised an eyebrow at her.

"What's wrong, Korra?" I asked.

"Did Amon take your bending," Korra asked softly. I looked down immediately.

I hate feeling so helpless without my bending. It was my favorite part about being myself. Half of my life and a part of me was taken. I slowly nodded my head at her.

"He took it away when you escaped," I said softly. Korra sighed.

"I swear, We will get Amon," Korra said, I smiled.

"I know you will," I said.

Korra and the others took me to their tent at the end of the Camp. Kaya stayed with Naga beside the tent. It looked like they were happy to see each other again. There was a large round log with a few seats around it. I took a seat between Mako and Asami. Suddenly, a old man with a pot of soup came to us.

"Welcome back! Dinner is ready!" The old man exclaimed, as he stirred the soup.

"Thank you so much for letting us stay with you these past few days," Korra said, as the man poured soup on her bowl.

"Happy to oblige, my associates and I hardly oppose Amon's equalist policies," the man said.

"Non-benders and benders live together down here, and do you see us fighting? Nope, because we found out how to harmoniously coexist," the man added.

I saw Bolin take a spoon of the soup, and he smiled.

"Wow, this soup is good," Bolin commented, so I put a spoon of soup in my mouth.

"Thanks, its made from the finest dumpsters in the city," the man said, and I coughed abruptly.

I whistled softly, and Kaya came to me. I put the soup bowl down on the ground for her to eat. I saw Asami had the same idea when she gave the bowl to Pabu. I smiled at her, and she smiled back. After the small dinner, I was setting up to sleep next to Kaya. I saw Asami setting up as well. Mako came up to her and gave her a pillow. She took it without looking or speaking to Mako. Did something happen between them?

It was already dark, I tried to sleep but I couldn't. I got up, and saw Korra sleeping on Naga. I decided to take a walk around the quiet camp. I took my bo with me just in case. It's been an hour, I was still walking when I heard someone behind me. I turned around and saw Mako.

"Hey, what are you doing up?" I asked, as he came up to me.

"I couldn't sleep too, I just actually finished talking with Korra, she couldn't sleep either," Mako said.

"Well, I'm gonna continue my walk, you can come if you want," I said, then he walked to my side, and started walking next to me.

"Did something happen between you and Asami?" I asked curiously, after seeing Asami earlier.

"We kind of broke up," Mako replied. I raised my eyebrows in shock.

"What happened?" I asked.

"She thinks I like Korra," Mako replied.

"Well, you do? Don't you?" I said.

"What? No! I—I don't know," Mako said. I sighed.

"Mako, I'm not stupid. I see the way you care for Korra. I'm sure Asami will understand one day. Just promise me you'll still be her friend," I said. He nodded.

"So I should talk to her?" Mako asked. I nodded.

"If you want to clear the air with her then you have to come to an understanding, don't worry, Mako, I've spoken to her about this already. She'll understand," I replied. He raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean you've already spoken to her about this?" Mako asked curiously.

"Oh, she's been aware of you and Korra for awhile," I replied.

"I'll talk to her tomorrow then," Mako said. I smiled.

"Good, well, goodnight, I'm off to bed," I said, as I started walking back to the camp, but Mako stopped me.

"Be up early tomorrow, we're gonna meet the United Forces, goodnight," Mako said, as he walked away to his sleeping are.

Iroh is coming.
