Bottom of the River

..

it's tango angst

i heard this song

and yes.

~

Tango watched as his mother, a wise & large woman with gorgeous brunette hair, cradled him in her arms. She was holding back tears, so Tango whispered comforts only a five year-old could think of. She didn't stop crying, however, like she'd done many times over.

She carefully set Tango down, gripping his hand tightly. Tango found comfort in it, in the touch, however tight it was. She started walking, and Tango followed. The sun was out, shining with its pretty light. The mesa was dusty, deserted. It was just Tango, his mother, and their small town.

They kept walking.

~

Maria blinked, holding back tears. She looked up through the window, at the dangerous night sky, and back at her child. She wouldn't get a lick of sleep tonight, she doesn't think she'll ever sleep again.

She settled Tango on his little bed frame, a soft smile dancing across a solemn face. Opening the cupboard, Maria poured herself a glass. It didn't matter of what, it just mattered that she needed a drink.

Even if she was going to the river tomorrow..

...

It was morning. The sun taunted her, its flames licking across the land, dancing like her baby's hair. She gripped his hand, looking up to the sky. She saw the townspeople looking on, their faces mirroring her own.

Solemn sadness.

This was Maria's fault, truly. She'd begged the lord for a child, and he'd refused. When he did, she begged the others for one.

They'd cursed her baby with this terrible affliction-

They made his hair flame, red taint his eyes.

They made him a demon.

Now, she must apologize, and there is only one way to do this.

She has to go down to the river.

~

By now, Tango recognized the route as the one to the river. It was a lonely river, the water speeding away from this desolate place, to where it could be joined with others of its kin. Tango never really liked the river, it reminded him harshly of how he differed.

He hated looking like the monsters in the book, the looks from the other.

He'd never hate it again.

~

I screamed, fighting for a fraction of air. Pain shot through me, the chill settling deep into my bones. I desperately tried to claw myself out, claw myself back.

It wouldn't work.

The river, running away oh-so fast, dragged me with it.

~

They'd almost reached the river. Maria was trying not to cry, afterall. This was her fault, she'd doomed her child. She'd made him into a demon.

She has to repent, she has to repent, she has to repent.

Her grip tightened. Tango squeaked as they started on the slope down to the rapids. He giggled, starting to speak about wolves & machinery. He'd always loved those things.

He'd never love again.

~

Tear streamed down my face, blurring everything. I screamed, watching the sun flicker.

Trembling, I stood, staring up at the Lord as he looked down at me.

I could hear his screams, I could see the water snatching him. I could see the water rise, threatening to overspill on the riverbanks.

I turned, wishing I could go after him.

I could hear the Lord congratulate me as he was taken, the fire in him flickering.

I watch as he struggles, I watch as the river fades.

A strange peace fills me.

~

Tango smiled, looking at the water. Today, it was peaceful. It didn't seem like a single thing to fear. She stood with him, holding his hand, tighter, tighter.

Something was wrong.

Something.

Something-

~

Tango talked & talked as She led him downhill. Her grip was growing with every step.

Tango didn't mind.

He never minded.

He asked how long it would take, the journey. He'd sparsely been down to the river, and he'd never known why. She'd alway reply with, ' It's a long way down...'

Tango always shrugged and skipped ahead, trying to go faster. The hand always gripped his, preventing him from running too far.

He wished he did.

~

The water filled me as it took me far away. I could feel tears running down.

I couldn't breathe.

I tried desperately to get out of the current, begging the Lord.

I could feel him look down at me, I was so sure he'd save me.

..

Darkness enclosed me.

The Lord had pushed me deeper.

Shock & a deep sadness filled me.

I tried to cry out.

I tried to do anything.

The darkness took me.

I could swear I heard him say, ' back where he belongs..'

~

Tango almost tripped, running down the pathway. She scolded him gently, telling him things he'd heard so many times ago.

' Hold my hand, ooh baby it's a long a way, a long way down'

..

He'd agreed, always & forever.

Because he trusted her.

He'd never trust again.
