Chapter 17

Athena woke up at five in the morning since she practically slept half of the day away yesterday. She got up quietly and went to her suitcase and changed into a comfortable outfit. Just her school sweatshirt and a pair of leggings.

Athena walked out of her hotel room to grab a quick breakfast to take up to her room. Technically the decathlon doesn't start until eight so no one should be up until 6:30 or 7, which means she's all alone for now.

Athena grabbed a few food items from the buffet table and walked out and towards the elevator. She liked the peacefulness of it being so early and quiet. It was nice, almost relaxing. She was sure that if she went outside right now it would be perfect. The elevator dinged as the doors slid open, Athena walked out and towards her room. She tried her best to open the door quietly and she managed to do it to a certain extent.

She sat down on one of the chairs and started to mess around on her phone to pass the time.

Athena's decathlon team stood in line for the decathlon and she couldn't but notice the one person that wasn't there. Peter still hasn't shown up yet. Ned made up an excuse that Peter didn't feel well, but they're not going to believe that excuse for long.

They finally made it backstage of the decathlon and five teammates walked onto the stage and took their seats. The Decathlon started and the questions got harder as they went along, but somehow Midtown stayed tied with the opposing team. That is until the last question. It was to break the tie.

The woman asked the question and MJ quickly buzzed in to answer the question and she got it right. Which meant that Midtown won the Decathlon!

*An Hour Or So Later*

Mr. Harrington had set up a tour for his class to go on. A tour of the Washington Monument. If Athena was being fully honest, she had no idea what the Washington Monument was or what it stood for and she didn't really care. But she went on the tour anyway. She was bored and she figured it would be better than sitting on one of the walls waiting.

The decathlon team all piled into the elevator, all besides MJ. The tour guide started her speech about the monument in a painfully monotone voice. Athena could not focus, but she tried hard to absorb the information that was being told. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a purple light shining out of Ned's bag. She looked over to him and before she could say anything a beam of purple light came out of the bag and burned a hole in the ceiling of the elevator. Athena just stared at it in horror.

"Don't worry, our safety systems are working. We are very safe in her," The tour guide said in the same monotone voice. She pushed the ceiling of the elevator up and out and started to help the kids out. Almost all the students were out, all besides Athena, Ned, and Flash. As Athena went to exit the elevator, Flash pushed her aside. "Take my trophy," Flash said and Athena glared daggers at him. He exited the elevator and for the second time, Athena was about to exit the elevator when the strings on the elevator started to break.

The roof of the elevator broke off and the elevator started falling to the ground. Athena backed herself against the wall hoping it would give her some sort of support. The elevator came to an abrupt stop, then after a moment, it started falling again. Then it stopped and a red blur fell through the roof and onto the floor of the elevator causing it to fall again. As the red blur shot a web to stop the elevator from falling, it clicked in Athena's head who it was. With all the movement of the elevator, she could barely tell it was Peter. That and her eyes were closed half the time.

The elevator stopped falling and Athena let out a breath of relief. She was holding her breath that entire time. "How you doin'? I got you," Peter said in a weird voice. Ned started to jump up and down. Athena looked at him like she was about to murder him. She did not want the elevator to fall again. "Hey! Big guy stop moving," Peter said.

"Sorry, sir," Ned said and Peter started to pull the elevator up. At first, Athena didn't even realize what was happening. She didn't know that Peter could do that.

Peter managed to get the elevator far enough up that they were able to open the doors where the other students got off. Athena stood off to the side as Ned got off the elevator, then Mr. Harrington, and as she moved to exit the roof above Peter's feet went out. The elevator started falling and there was nothing Athena could do. That was until she realized she wasn't falling with the elevator. She looked up and saw that Peter had shot a web at her wrist and was pulling her up. He grabbed her hand and didn't let go until she was safely next to the rest of her class.

Then the web that was holding Peter up snapped and he started falling down the elevator shaft. Mr. Harrington leaned over the edge. "Thank you," He said and then Flash leaned over. "Are you really friends with Peter Parker?" He yelled and obviously didn't receive an answer.

Athena's class arrived back at the hotel and all went up to their separate rooms. Once Athena was in her room with MJ, she was bombarded with questions. "What happened? Did Spider-Man save you? How did the elevator break?" MJ asked in more of a curious way than a worried friend way. "We were in the elevator, something blew up, the strings that pull up the elevator broke, and then the elevator fell," Athena said while she still tried to slow down her racing heart.

"And?" MJ asked.

"Then Spider-man saved us. Pretty straightforward, MJ," Athena said.

"Huh, pretty gnarly," MJ said and Athena nodded. "Should've followed my gut and stayed with you," Athena said.

"But if you fit that, then you wouldn't have been saved by Spider-Man," MJ pointed out and Athena shrugged. "I guess," Athena said and she started to pack up her bag. Mr. Harrington wanted to leave as soon as possible. "You are way too chill after just being saved by Spider-Man. I thought you would be fangirling over him or something," MJ said and Athena shrugged. "I'm not really the type to fangirl," Athena said, trying to come up with an excuse why she wasn't acting like how probably every other teenage girl would act.

Once Athena and MJ were all packed up they walked down to the lobby and waited for their other classmates to join them.

After a couple of minutes, Peter and Ned walked down along with a few others. "Hey, are you okay?" Peter asked as he walked up to Athena. "Yeah, I'm fine," Athena said, unfortunately with everyone else around she couldn't say thanks to him, but she hoped that he got the point.
