11. Dangerous Liaisons

Melissa

It was about mid-day in the Mikaelson house. I ran down the stairs where I bumped into Kol. He pulled me aside before I walked into the living room.

"Did you think about what I said yesterday?" He asked.

"Yeah and you're right. We should tell him but if anything happens, I told you so." I replied.

"And if he's completely okay with it, then I told you so. On another note, this dress...you look gorgeous, darling" He said as he spinned me around.

I went into the kitchen and grabbed a blood bag: A negative, my favorite. I finished that and walked into the living room. Finn, Elijah and Kol were getting fitted for suits for Mikaelson ball. Rebekah was sitting on the couch getting her nails done.

"How are my favorite family of vampires doing on this fine morning?" I said with a very chipper voice.

"And why are soo chipper this morning?" Finn asked me with a suspicious look on his face.

"Because all my favorite people are back, I couldn't be better." I sat down next to Rebekah on the couch.

Kol was standing in front a mirror and asked Rebekah. "Rebekah, tell me how handsome I am?" He is always so full of himself.

"Ah Kol, you know I can't be compelled." Rebekah replied with a nice smirk on her face. We all laughed even Finn let out a grin. Theses are the good times that I missed.

"Don't worry, Kol. You look great." I said with a smile on my face.

"You always did stroke his ego, Melissa." Rebekah said and everyone nodded in agreeance.

I turn my attention to Bekah. "Now, what have you been up to?"

"Well, I went after Elena." She said rather calmly.

I was in shock "Wow, one day? You work fast. You went after the Dopplebitch? Without me?" I said with a surprised expression on my face.

"Dopplebitch?" Kol questioned. This probably sounded really strange to anyone who didn't know who we were talking about.

"Elena, the doppelganger. Me and Rebekah despise her, but for good reason."

"How times have you attacked her while I've been gone?" Rebekah teased, knowing that I have.

"What makes you think that... Actually like twice. One because her and Damon daggered you. Two because she was pushing my buttons." I stated.

"Without me?" She joked, I pushed her side lightly "Well, I'm pretty sure Nik got upset with you."

"Yes, he did." I paused for a second and heard the door open. "And it looks like it's your turn."

Klaus stormed into the room, obviously angry at Rebekah."You went after Elena? What's wrong with you?"

"Here we go." Rebekah said knowing what us about to happen.

"Do you want another dagger in your heart?" Will he ever stop with that?

Kol jumped into the conversation and actually defended Rebekah. Probably shouldn't get use to it though. "Again with the dagger threats, don't you have any other tricks?"

Klaus turned his head and looked back at Kol. "Oh, go back to staring at yourself, Kol"

"And who are you, my father?"

"No, Kol but you're in my house." Klaus walked up to Kol and Kol was sitting in chair.

"Then perhaps we should go outside." Kol stood up and looked at Nik with a smirk on his face. Klaus on the other hand looked frustrated with his brother. They stared off at one another until Esther walked into the room.

When she came in everyone got quiet. "Enough! Niklaus, come." Klaus walked into another room with her. I swear even though they are thousand year old vampires they still act like 5 year old children.

"Well, that was quite the show." I chuckled and Bekah chuckled, it's nice having someone to laugh with.

Me and Bekah talked until Klaus came back from talking with Esther. Kol went up to Klaus and said "We need to tell you something." Are you serious? Are you seriously going to do this right now, Kol? I guess so.

"Melissa, come on." I didn't get up at first but then Kol pulled me off the couch beside him.

"Are you two gonna get on with it, already or are just going to stand there?" Nik said clearly inpatient.

Kol held my hand as he said "Well, me and Melissa are dating, we've been for a while. We don't want to hide our feelings anymore. We thought we should let you know. We aren't afraid of you anymore."

"Technically, we were never afraid of you to begin with, Klaus. We just didn't want you finding out."

"I just have question for you two.... Why did you keep it a secret?" Klaus asked

"Because you killed almost all of Rebekah's lovers." I said back. After that there was a bit of an awkward silence.

"So, just to be clear. You are okay with what's going in here?" Kol questioned. Klaus said yes in reply. Me and Kol hugged one another. He started to kiss me and I kissed back. We both let when we realized that his siblings were still in the room.

There was a strange silence for a minute, so I broke it by saying "Well on another note: I have to go to the Mystic Grill to meet Damon." I started to walk off.

"Why are talking to him?" Rebekah asked.

"He wants to make peace with me and I agree. He was my friend before all of this." I said to them. I mean it would be nice to my college drinking buddy back.

"Should I be worried about this Damon guy?" Kol questioned and he looked a little worried. Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah started to chuckle.

"Kol, you have nothing to worry about. Bye, now." He said to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. I grabbed my jacket and headed out the door. I walked all the way to the Mystic Grill and walked towards the bar in the back, which was the only part I go to.

I saw Damon sitting to the side and I walked over to him. "Damn Melissa, you look fine." He said to me, Classic Damon.

"You said you wanted to talk." I said cutting straight to point.

"Yes, I want us to be friends again."

"That is the nicest thing you've ever said." Damon scoffed. "We were always friends, Damon; you are just always doing stupid stuff that makes want to rip your head off."

"Well, I can't promise that but I can promise you a drinking buddy. What do you say? Truce?" He put his hand out to me.

"Yeah, truce" I shaked his hand. "But if you try any stupid stuff, don't expect me not to retaliate." We both got ourselves a drink and started talking.

"Now tell me how did you tangled up with the Mikaelsons?" He asked me which is probably the question everyone has been thinking.

"It's a long story, Damon."

"I can wait" I glared at him "Okay then; on another note, how is Esther even alive? I thought she died thousand years ago."

"That's what we all thought. I guess the witches preserved her body, I just can't believe that Nik keep her body for soo long." I said in disbelief. What was the point of Klaus keeping her body around.

"What is her motive? Is she here to kill or protect?"

"It seems like she has forgiven Klaus for what he has done but I don't trust it. I don't trust her, it doesn't add up. Why hasn't she gotten back at him?" This fact has really been frustrating me, now I finally get to let it out.

"Not everyone has your temper, Melissa."

"You don't have to have a temper to have a motive." I pointed out to him before taking a sip of my drink.

"Why don't you trust her? Or do you at least have proof?" He questioned me but he doesn't know is the damage she has caused me.

"Let's just say that she might be the reason that everyone except my immediate family was killed before I was two." We talked for a while until I left. I walked back to the house.

I walked through the door and Rebekah right at the door. "I've been waiting for you, I don't know why it took you soo long. Anyway, we have to get ready for the ball." She said all this while taking my arm and dragging me upstairs to her room.

"Bekah, it doesn't start for another couple of hours." I sighed as I sat down in a chair.

"There is no such thing as being too prepared."

"You are never gonna stop with this, are you?" I questioned.

"Never, also it's a perfect time for girl talk."

"Well... since it's girl talk, okay." I said and Rebekah sat down and got comfortable.

"Now tell me, how are things with you and Kol?"

"Things are... good." I said while trying to hind my huge smile, I couldn't help it.

"And?" She questioned, obviously wanting more information. There was nothing else to tell for now at least.

"That's all for now, I'll keep you updated." I chuckled. "Let's change the subject."

I got up and went over to her and started to do this cool updo on her hair. "Tell me, how has Nik been?" She asked.

"Klaus is Klaus, there's no controling him but he's a great partner in crime. I do love to cause mischief and go on missions of diabolical destruction."

"I know you have, I wouldn't expect anything less." We grinned at one another. We finished getting ready together and put on our dresses. Rebekah had on this amazing one strap green dress. I had on a strapless purple dress with lots of sparkle.

"We look hot." Rebekah said making me laugh.

"You always say we look hot."

"Because we do." This girl always knows how to make me laugh. "But seriously, Kol is going to be all over you."

"Shut up" I chuckled and playfully hit her arm.

"He won't be able to keep his hands off you." This girl is crazy, like a good crazy.

"Let's stop talking about this. Don't we have to head downstairs?" We both left her room and walked downstairs into the big ballroom. It looks so different from how it was a few hours ago.

I walked around for a bit and a servant came around with glasses of champagne. Naturally, I picked up a glass. "Don't mind if I do." I said to the person.

I stood near the side of the wall with my drink and Kol waved at me and I waved back. He was talking to Damon and Carol Lockwood. He had a flirty little smile on his face when he looked at me. I smirked back at him. This went on for another minute before he came over to me.

"My oh my, darling. You look sexy as hell." I laughed as he spun me around.

"You don't look too bad yourself. You look hot."

"Like how hot?" He said with a smirk on his face as he put his arms around my waist; pulling me closer.

"Like damn" I whispered seductively, pulling his tie; bringing him closer to me. Our faces came close to one another and we were about to kiss then Damon and Elena came up to us. Great timing.

"Melissa, don't you want to introduce us to your friend." Damon questioned.

"Damon, Dopplebitch this is Kol, my boyfriend. Kol, this is my friend, Damon and this is the doppelganger." I said. It was so strange saying that, it was a nice feeling.

"You know I have a name, right?" Elena said but I wasn't going to let her ruin my good mood.

"Yeah but I don't bother to say it." They walked away after that.

"Uh, if everyone could gather, please." Elijah called out and everyone gathered in the center near the stairs.

"I'll be right back." Kol said as he went to the stairs with the rest of his siblings. Esther walked down the stairs from the top.

Elijah began to speak again "Welcome, thank you for joining us. You know, whenever our family together comes like this, it's tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance. Tonight's pick is a century's old waltz, so if all of you could find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom." Everyone got their partners and walked into the ballroom.

Kol came down the stairs and took my hand as we walked into the ballroom. We all started to dance the waltz. "You remember this dance?" Kol asked knowing it would make me smile.

"Of course, how could forget." I can remember that day clear as ever.

Flashback to 1118

The Mikaelsons were having one of their annual balls, this one was different for some reason. I was 16 at the time, Elijah and Rebekah were with their dates the entire time. I was sitting down watching them then Kol and Klaus came up to me and asked "Would you like to dance?"

"Well of course, I would." They took turns dancing with me and then we all danced together. It wasn't tradition to do that but they did it anyway. They spent the whole night with me: we talked, we laughed, we caused trouble. Elijah didn't even try to stop us like he usually would. He let me have my fun like his brothers did. They treated me like one of them, like I was family and that really made my day. It was a great night.

"Thank you guys for tonight. You could have been having fun without soo many other people, so thank you."

"No problem, that's what family does." Kol said.

"We don't let just anyone live with us for the past 4 years, do we?" Klaus said.

"Seriously, it means a lot. Thank you for tonight, I needed it." I said, putting one arm around both of them.

Flashback ended.

I was knocked out of my flashback when Kol spinned me. I ended up dancing with Nik. "I see you brought Caroline." I had a little smirk on my face.

"Mother wanted me to bring someone, so I did."

"We both know you brought Caroline because you wanted to. It's okay that you like her, I can keep a secret." I said as walked away since the dance was over.

I saw Kol and Rebekah talking in the foyer and I went over to them. "Where's your date?" Kol asked her.

"Flirting with his ex." Rebekah said back bitterly.

"You've changed, Bekah. You know settling for mortals is the first sign of weakness." Kol said.

"Who are we talking about here?" I said jumping into the conversation.

"Matt. Now could you please tell my brother that humans aren't a weakness." Rebekah said looking annoyed with her brother.

"Sorry to say this but I agree with Kol."

"But you've both dated humans before."

"We were younger vampires back then. Now, we are centuries old powerful badass vampires, things are different."

"Anyway, I'm not settling. I brought him here to kill him. He's Elena's friend. If he dies, she suffers. I've already been scolded once so I was hoping you'd help your baby sister out." Rebekah smirked. This plan was little risky with her mother around but this is my favorite type of plan.

"And spit right in the face of mother's rules?" He smiles "I'm in."

"Melissa, are you going help us carry out the deed?"

"Absolutely, I wouldn't miss it for the world." We all grinned at one another. We all walked around in the foyer for a bit. Rebekah was looking around the room for Matt.

"Don't you find it weird that your mother seems okay with Nik killing her?" I asked Rebekah. Maybe this wasn't the moment to ask but I was curious.

"She wants us to be a family again. She's forgiven him. What's wrong with that?" She replied. I know they all believe that but I just can't shake that feeling.

"See if someone killed me and I came back from the dead; I would kick their ass. So, it strikes me as strange when someone could do that doesn't." Hopefully that put an idea in their head. We walked around some more as Bekah looked for Matt.

"I'm itching to kill something. What are we waiting for?" Kol looked agitated but that's usually when people stall things like killing humans.

"The mayor cornered me. Give me fifteen minutes to lure Matt outside."

"Outside? What's wrong with right here on the stairs? Make a spectacle of it." Sometimes Kol's a genius; other times, he's an idiot. It really just determines on the day; today he is an idiot.

"You sound like a idiot, Kol." I said hitting his arm, glaring at him.

"Mother would kill you if you ruined her party. See you outside." Rebekah added, she walked away to find Matt.

After a couple of minutes, me and Kol walked outside where Rebekah was with Matt. We stood near one of bushes so we wouldn't be seen. She and Matt were talking while they walked to his car. He gave her his jacket and they walked back inside. What just happened here?

We walked back inside because it was obvious weren't going to kill him. Waiters walked around handing glasses of champagne to people. Me and Kol both took one.

Esther was standing at the top of stairs. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Waiters are coming around with champagne. I invited you all to join me in raising a glass. It provides me with no greater joy then to see my family back together as one. I'd like to thank you all for being a part of this spectacular evening. Cheers!" Everyone raised their glasses and drank.

Finn appeared behind me and Kol. "Melissa, how are you enjoying the spectacle?" Finn asked.

"It's fantastic, your mother can put together one hell of a party. More importantly, how are you?"

"It's the first time I've been out of that coffin in centuries, so I'm doing better, thanks to you. I heard you're the one who found them." This is first conversation we've had in 6 centuries.

"Magic definitely speeds up the process."

"Well, I'm glad but I am surprised that you have forgiven Niklaus with your temper and all. No offense."

"None taken. I guess I have spent enough time being angry at him, it's wasting my energy. I'm happy to be back with all of you."

"Glad you're back. I have to get back to my mother. I will see you later."

"Bye Finn." Finn walked away.

Meanwhile, Rebekah is standing under the stairs and Kol is walking over to her. "There you are. I was waiting outside for you. Where's Matt?"

"About that, I, uh.... I changed my mind. I don't want to ruin mother's night." Rebekah said, she looked nervous probably because of Kol's possibly reaction.

"Don't tell me you like this boy?" Here we go again "What did he do? He gave you five seconds of his attention. Don't be so predictable, Rebekah." He sighed.

"You don't have to be rude about it. Just leave him be, okay?" Rebekah walked away.

"As you wish, sister." Kol with a mischievous smile on his face which meant trouble.

"Kol, what are you planning?" I had my arms crossed.

"Nothing, don't worry." That wasn't very comforting to hear.

"This is you we're talking about here. Can you just not do anything? Respect your sister's wishes." Kol started to chuckle. "I mean it, Kol."

He put his hannds in air, giving up "Okay, fine." He said, I walked away. I saw Elijah and called out to him.

"Elijah" He turned around and I went up to him.

"Melissa, how have you been?" Elijah asked me.

"I'm good but I need your opinion on something."

"About my mother."

"How did you know?"

"Everyone been asking about my mother. I'm guessing you aren't sure of her intentions as well." It's like he's reading my mind.

"It doesn't seem right, there's something going on. The rest of your siblings seem to believe what she's saying but I don't trust it." We heard something fall from outside. Me, Elijah and the rest of his family walked outside to see Kol on the ground getting his neck snapped by Damon.

"Far be it for me to cause a problem." Damon runs off.

"Klaus, can you help me get Kol to his room?" I sighed, me and him carried Kol up to his room and layed him on his bed.

Klaus left the room and I stayed in there until he woke up. After a while, he finally woke up. "Finally, it took you long enough."

"Worried about me?"

"No but I am a bit concerned."

"Because I went after Matt."

"You never obey Rebekah's wishes, I wasn't surprised. I am concerned that you got your ass kicked by a 160 year old vampire." I couldn't get the words out without laughing.

"Very funny. I was in a coffin for a century."

"That's no excuse. Maybe I should train you, looks like you need an update." We both were laughing.

"I'd probably still win though."

"No chance, I wouldn't doubt me."

"I would never think about it, darling."

"I miss this, us, just being together."

"Me too but now this time around, we can be us without the hiding. I know you hated hiding it from Nik, you too were always soo close."

"Yeah, we are, with complications as always but it was worth it." I smiled and took his hand. He smiled back at me. "I'm gonna head back to my room, I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" I gave him a peck. on the cheek.

"No, no, no." He said with a pouty face and reached his arm out to me. "Stay in here with me. We could have a lot of good times here, together." Then he turned seductive. He got up and walked up to me.

"I know, we could but maybe another night." I put my arms on his shoulders.

"Whatever you say, always. Night, darling."

"Goodnight, Kol." I walked out of the room and waved to him.
