chapter 21 || lightening is frightening

Winston was gone... The walk to wherever the shuck we were going to was quiet. I let out a few sobs every now and then.

While I didn't wasn't as close to Winston as some of the others were, I still counted him as one of my friends and family.

As the sun began to set in the horizon, and the sky turned dark, we set up a small camp out in the open, with a small fire running. The days in the scorch were awfully hot and humid, while the nights were almost freezing cold. Strange, right?

"I thought we were supposed to be immune" I spoke up first, watching the flames dance in the wind. Everyones gaze turned to me.

"Not all of us, I guess. If Winston could get infected... We should assume that so can the rest of us." Newt's voice spoke out. I looked at him next to me as we made eye contact.

"Here, you almost left this earlier" He whispered to me so only I could hear as he gave me the jacket he had given me the night before.

I gave him a weak smile, taking the jacket gratefully as it kept me warm. All of us sat in silence for a few moments.

"I never thought I'd say this... I miss the Glade" Fry's voice said aloud. I turned my head up to look at him, his eyes glistened with water slightly, but evaporated as he blinked them away.

We all nodded in agreement. While the Glade was a horrible place to all of us, it was the only 'home' that we could remember. The only sense of comfort to us. Even Aris agreed with us, and he was in a completely different one. Apparently one with all girls.

I sighed as I looked up, making eye contact with Aris.

"Hey, can we talk?" I asked him as I walked over to the blue eyed boy. He nodded as we both walked a bit away from the group, but still close enough to see them.

"Sorry, I know we haven't really talked much, but in the Glade... it's kinda odd when I say it out loud actually" I mumbled as my words began to combine. "I had a dream about you... it's weird, we were dating, and Wicked had separated us" I said as I looked up to him.

He had no emotion to his face, but he just nodded. Obviously, I didn't feel anything for him anymore, and he seemed to not feel any romantic feeling too.

"Well, just thought I'd tell you.. I'm gonna head back now" I said before getting up.

I didn't even realize I had passed out, not until someone shook me awake.

"Get up" The said to me as I rubbed my eyes. I looked to see Newt, holding out his hand for me to take.

Thomas was already waking the others, all of them grumbling with the sudden movement.

"I see something" Thomas said to the group which grabbed everyones attention.

I could see it too now. A building of some sort, with light! Society? The Right Arm?

"What is that? What-" Minho asked.

"Lights... They're lights! We made it!" I exclaimed excitedly.

None of us seemed to notice, but a storm was passing through us, making the clouds rumble and the sky turn a darker blue than it was originally. Lightning struck from behind us as we all sprinted towards the building.

"Keep running!" I heard Thomas shout before a bolt of electricity hit me, making me fly off to the right and stumble onto the floor with a loud thud I'm assuming.

I got up quickly, my mind still processing what had happened. Thomas came running at me to get me to safety, but a shadow on the floor a few feet away from me made me stop. It looked like... Minho.

"Thomas! We need to get to Minho!" I motioned towards the boy that lay on the floor. Atleast, I think that's what I said... My hearing had gone out.

He quickly nodded, telling me in a muffled voice to run into the building where the others were. I ran in as fast as I could, my ears beginning to make the noise around me normal.

"Are you bloody insane-" Newt said to me as he engulfed me in a hug, wrapping his arms around me tightly.

"Yes, I'm fine. I'm worried about Minho more" I replied as Minho and Thomas came into the door.

Minho lay limply on the floor. Shuck. We can't have Minho leave us too. I thought to myself. I did what I had to do...

Note to self, CPR on Minho is by far one of the hardest things in life. He'd breathe, and then his heart would stop. It was like an endless cycle. Until finally I pumped enough air into his shucking lungs.

I gasped as I felt a twitch on his lips, telling me that he was kissing me back.

"Ew! You Slinthead, what the hell!" I shouted as I backed up from the boy as he played dead.

The others looked at me as if I was crazy. I kicked Minho in the shin, sending him to shriek from the sudden pain.

"Okay! Okay! Jeez! I'm sorry!" He shouted at me as he sprung back to life. He gave me a cheeky grin as I scoffed jokingly at him.

"What'd he do?" Thomas asked.

"The Shank kissed me back" I muttered as I wiped my hand on my jacket.

"I'm not gonna pass up an opportunity like that! You guys would do the same!" He defended himself. We all laughed along with him, well most of us. Newt stared daggers at us.

"Anywho, what happened?" Minho asked.

"You got shot by lightening" I said simply.

"Cool"

I looked at the boy, surprised by his response, he wasn't at all worried about his safety, but instead he found it amusing and cool?

"What's that smell?" Teresa asked us. I soon could smell a rotting smell, it wasn't pleasant at all.

I ventured into the darkness, trying to find out what it was. Before I knew it, I was face to face with a Crank, sending me screaming.

"Y/N!" Newt said as he grabbed me away from the creature.

The lights flickered for a moment before revealing a brunette girl with a pixie cut, her clothes were slightly torn, but she looked in better condition than we probably did.

"I see you've met our guard dogs"
