chapter 13 ||grievers and screamers

Rushing out of the hut, I saw as the night had turned almost pitch black. The doors, sadly were wide open, welcoming things to come out or things to come in.

A group of boys stood at the gates. Torches, Spears, and Pitch forks, using to ward off the beasts that were waiting to come out.

"Chuck, go to the Council-Hall and start barricading the doors" I ordered. He quickly nodded, running away as fast as he could to get away from the doors.

"Winston, go with him too. Alright? Get the others and tell them to hide in the forests. Go! Now!" I yelled.

A loud grumble made the floor shake. A couple of screams were heard. Shuck we were in trouble.

"Minho, I need you to find every weapon you can. We'll meet back up at the council hall okay?" I said to the boy as he quickly nodded, running even faster.

"Come on. We need to get Alby!" I said, rushing Thomas, Newt, and Teresa to follow me.

We began sprinting towards the fields, in order to hide us from the Grievers. The squeals and shrieks of them could be heard from all around us.

"Stay down!" Thomas shouted.

I quickly knealt down, knocking to Newt. I scrambled for a moment before he quickly placed his hands on my arms.

"Sor-" I began, only to be cut off by his hand over my mouth. My breathing quickened as I heard more shrieks and squeals from around the Glade.

A boys shriek was heard. My eyes darted our surroundings as I saw a blond headed boy be lifted into the air.

"Zart!" I shouted as his body was flown left and right.

"Go! Go, go!" Thomas ordered us, we all began running towards the Council Hall.

"Gally let us in!" I shouted pounding hard on the wooden door. My heart beated faster and faster with the anxiety that rose. I stumbled in quickly as the others did too.

"Alby!" Thomas shouted to the boy "Are you okay?"

"What's going on out there?" Alby asked us.

"They're here" I blurted out.

"The Grievers?"

I nodded quickly, still catching my breath. We all sat in silence for a moment, listening for where the Grievers might be around us.

All of a sudden, an animatronic arm pierced its way through the cieling. We all let out a yelp as it came into view.

"Stay behind me!" Alby shouted. We all listened to the oldest boy, moving our bodies behind him. The arm retracted back to the outside as we all let out a sigh of relief.

"Is everyo-"

"Help!" I yelped, being pulled by an animatronic arm.

"Y/N, no!" I heard Newt shout, I tried grasping his hand, but it slipped out. Thomas quickly grabbed one of my arms as Minho grabbed the other.

"Pull her back!" Thomas shouted.

"Y/N, don't let go!" Newt yelled, pulling onto me too.

"Well no shit!" I yelled back.

"Pull!" Minho cried.

Alby quickly beat off the Grievers arm, making me fall roughly onto the hard floor.

"Y/N! Are you okay?" Newt asked as he ran over to me.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine" I said, catching my breath as I lay sprawled out on the floor.

"Shuck, Alby!" I screamed as his body halfway out of the Council Hall.

I ran over to him, grabbing onto his arm.

"Someone come over and help me!" I yelled. "Alby! No!" I screamed. I had lost my grasp on the boy and I was the reason he died.

"I'm so sorry..." I said, running out of the room.

"Wait, no, Y/N. Come back!" I heard shouts from behind me. "Thomas?" I said to myself as the boy went running towards the group of builders.

"This is all you, Thomas!" The keeper of builders shouted at the brunette, pushing the brunette a bit. "Look around!"

"Back off Gally" I yelled at the boy sternly, my brows furrowed together.

"No! You heard what Alby said! He's one of them and they sent him up here to destroy everything. And now he has!" Gally said in frustration

"Gally, back off. Please. Arguing isn't going to help us" I said, voice shaking ever so slightly. "This isn't Thomas' fault"

"Maybe he's right" I heard Thomas say from behind me. I slowly turned around to see the brunette picking up a stinger from a Griever.

"Thomas-"

"I need to remember, Y/N" He interrupted.

"Thomas-" Newt begun.

"No don't-!" I shouted, quickly running towards the boy. He lay unconscious on the floor, the stinger sticking out of his leg.

"Chuck! Go get the other syringe!" Teresa yells from beside me.

Chuck came back as quick as he could, handing me the syringe as I stuck the needle into Thomas' neck. I quickly pulled out the stinger, wrapping my jacket around his leg to keep the bleeding at a steady rate.

"Y/N, I don't want to do this. But you can either stick on my side, or do whatever the shuck Thomas wants you to do" Gally said to me as he knelt down to my gaze.

"I'm sorry, Gally. I just don't want to be stuck here forever. This place isn't our home!" I said sadly.

"Put them in the Slammer" Gally told the builders. They nodded before grabbing both of my arms, dragging me and Thomas towards the Slammer for the night.

"Y/N! Gally, you can't do this!" Newt said to the builder.

"Newt, it's the only way to keep us and the rest of the Glade safe." Gally scoffed, walking with his friends to take us away.

I slept sitting up right that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I could see the frightened looks of my friends being pulled away from the Grievers.

"Hey" I said as I watched the boy slowly stir awake from where he lay. He looked up to me groggily. "Are you okay? What the hell were you thinking, Thomas? You could've gotten yourself killed!"

"What happened?" He asked as a few figures came into view. Specifically Newt, Minho, and Teresa.

"Gally, has taken control. He said we had a choice. Either join him, or get banished at sundown... with you" I said, looking at Thomas. His face turned grim quickly as he realized the danger that put us all in.

"And, the others agreed to that?" Thomas asked, a sense of betrayal came over him.

"Gally convinced almost everyone that you're the reason all of this happened" Newt said sadly.

"Well, he's been right so far" Thomas said weakly.

"What do you mean?" Newt asked, staring at the boy through the bamboo gates.

"This place. It's not what we thought it was. It's not a prison but some sort of test. It all started when we were kids. They gave us these challenges and experimented on us. And then, all of a sudden, kids started disappearing. Every month, one after another like clock work. They were sending them up into the maze." Thomas explained. We all looked at the boy, shocked of what just came out of his mouth.

"But not all of us..." I muttered silently, but loud enough for Thomas and Newt to pick up.

"Guys. I'm one of them. The people who put you here. I've watched you guys for years. The entire time I was on the other side of it. So were you" He said, looking up to Teresa. She looked shocked because of what she just heard, her mouth open slightly.

"What?" She asked, stunned.

"Teresa, we're the ones that did this to them..." Thomas said sadly.

"No- that can't be true" She said, slightly holding back tears. "Why would they send us up here if we were working with them?"

"It doesn't matter" Thomas said, leaning his back against the hard wall.

"He's right. It doesn't matter, none of it does." Newt began. "Because the people we were before the maze don't even exist anymore. What does matter now, is who we are, and what we do. Thomas, you went into the maze and you found a way out"

"Yeah, but if I hadn't, Alby, would still be alive" The brunette said, I watched a tear form quickly in his eyes, but it went away as soon as it had come.

"Maybe. But I know if he were here, he'd be telling you the exact same thing. Pick your ass up and finish what you've started. Because if we do nothing, then Alby died for nothing. And I can't have that" Newt said with a smile.

I nudged Thomas slightly, "Newt rarely cusses, take his advice"

Thomas hesitated for a minute, thinking if it was a good idea.

"Okay- okay but we need to get through Gally first" Thomas said, eyeing all of us.

We nodded, preparing for what the next 24 hours were going to look like.
