chapter 1 || welcome to the glade

I'll never forget the way he looked at me. It was full of curiosity and wonder. His warm dark brown eyes lay on me as I sat in the corner, a knife of some sort in hand.

"It's a girl..." He said to whoever was outside of the box.

My body was taking me in and out of sleep. Each blink I made felt longer than the next, but I tried to stay awake.

I don't really remember what happened before I met his eyes. Honestly, I don't remember anything about my life or myself.

Dizziness and heat came over me. It was all to much. I passed out, not caring at that point.

"Wicked Is Good"  played through my head as my senses faded away.

Opening my eyes, I was met with the same boy that had greeted me down in the metal box. Except this time, I was on a bed, and he sat slumped on a chair. He had blond hair that had fallen right in front of his eyes, dangling in front of his head.

I sat up from the bed, my arms supporting my body from underneath me. The floor made a small creak as I put pressure on my two feet. The boy jumped slightly, his eyes opening wide as he noticed I was awake.

"Oh you're awake" He said, rushing over to me. "Clint. Jeff, she's awake!" He shouted outside of the wooden hut that we were in.

Two boys quickly made their in, shoving Newt out of the way as they came over to me. They bombarded me with questions, seeing if I was okay and asking what had happened.

"She just woke up, calm down with the questions" The blond headed boy said, sitting back down in his chair.

They nodded, just taking my temperature and helping me stand up.

"How long have I been out for?" I asked.

"Uhm. Three days..." The blond headed boy said, rubbing the back of his neck.

I looked at all of them before getting up from the bed, walking out of the door.

"Hey, wait no! Greenie! Come back!" I heard shouts from behind me. I ignored them, walking outside to see where I was.

As I peered out into the place. I quickly noticed that cement walls had encased us into a square box.

I walked down from where I stood, taking it all in as I stood in the middle of a field of grass. By now, The three boys had followed me out.

While looking at the place, I noticed there were a bunch of boys. All of them were boys? That thought suddenly seared into my mind. All of them were boys. No girls were in sight.

I did what my mind had first thought to do. Run.

I sprinted as fast as I could. Running straight towards what looked to be an opening in the walls.

"Hey! We got a Runner!" Someone shouted from behind me.

I heard a bunch of things being dropped behind me, but I ignored it. I just kept running towards the opening. Running as fast as my legs could take me. My mind was set on one thing only. Getting out of this weird place.

I could only get so far before I felt weight being thrown onto me. Throwing me to the floor and into the soft grass. The same blond headed  boy now lay on me. I looked at him a little closer now, he was actually rather close to me now.

My back ached from hitting the ground so hard, but the boys head lay on my stomach. Encasing me onto the floor as his arms sat right next to me legs.

While taking a closer look at him, he seemed to be around my age. Taller than me, but he looked around the age of 16 or 17.

He groaned a little as his eyes met mine, going wide as he realized he was laying onto me.

He pulled himself up, holding a hand out to me to help me get up.

"Take it all in" a voice sounded from behind me.

A boy with dark brown skin walked over to me.

"Hey there Greenie, you're not going to run again, okay?" He asked me, looking into my eyes. I nodded slowly, responding to his words.

"Good" he added.

All the boys still watched as I was standing up.

"Name's Alby, can you tell me anything about yourself?" He asked. "Who you are? Where you're from?" He added.

I shook my head. It hit me like a brick. I couldn't even remember my own name...

"Hey it's okay, we all come up like that. Your name should come back to you in a couple days. It's the one thing they let us keep" Alby reassured me, patting my back as a sign to follow him.

I didn't make it very far though. Two boys had come running out of the opening in the wall. Why were they allowed to leave and I wasn't? I wondered to myself. They shot up their hands to wave and ran off, before quickly running back to look at me.

"This is the Greenbean?" One of the boys asked. He was had tan skin and was Asian, wearing a blue short sleeve shirt.

"She looks more like a Shebean" He added, before running off.

I followed Alby as he lead me deeper into the grassy lands.

"What even is this place?" I asked the boy after a moment of silence.

"Let me show you" Alby replied, showing off what looked to be a village of some sorts.

"We eat here, we sleep here, we grow our own food, and we build our own shelters." He begun, letting me take in all of the presence. I looked at everything in awe. The place did look a bit charming.

"Whatever we need here, the box provides. The rest is up to us" Alby continued. I payed attention to everything he said.

"The box? What do you mean the box? Why am I the only girl?" I asked, questions flooding through my body.

"Yeah, it's sent up once a month with a new Greenie and new supplies, this time, it was you. None of us know why you're the only girl, it's usually a boy" He explained. I nodded slowly, not really knowing what to do.

"But who sent us up here? Why did they even send us here?" I asked.

"None of us really know, but we call them the creators" The boy replied, motioning for another boy to come talk with us.

I quickly realized that the boy was infact the blond one I've been seeing nonstop everywhere.

"Hey, you alright Alby?" The boy semi-shouted to Alby as he walked over to us. I realized he had a small limp that slowed him down a little.

"Greenie, meet Newt" Alby begun, pointing out hands, almost show casing Newt. "When I"m not around, Newt's in charge."

"Well, it's a good thing you're always around then" Newt said with a grin, patting Alby on the back.

"I'll leave you to finish the tour, Newt" Alby said to the blond headed boy. We watched as Alby walked off towards the wooden huts.

"That was quite a run you made right there, you were almost as fast as some of the runners" Newt said with a small laugh.

I looked at him with a curious look, but ignored the statements about runners.

"Oh shuck, almost forgot to introduce myself, I'm Newt" The boy said to me holding out his hand for me to shake. I shook his hand.

Shuck? The fuck does that mean?

I studied the boys features even closer now. He had dark brown eyes that looked like honey dripping into a bowl in the sun, fluffy hair blond hair with streaks of brown, and a wide toothy grin.

"And you are..?" He asked, taking me out of my thoughts.

"Oh, I don't actually remember my name" I replied awkwardly.

"No worries, Greenie. Did Alby by any chance tell you the rules for the Glade?"

I shook my head no, waiting to be told these rules.

"Well, we only have three rules. First, do your part. No time for free loaders. Second, Never harm another Glader. None of this works unless we have trust. Most importantly... never go beyond those walls. Do you understand me, Greenie?"

I nodded slowly, taking in the rules.

We sat in a moment of silence as we looked at what the boys called 'The Glade'.

"Well, I'm sorry to cut this short, but I have to get back to work, we have something planned for later, so see you around?" The boy asked me, touching my arm in a reassuring manner.

"Yeah, yeah I'll see you later" I replied, watching as he walked away.

I looked around, wondering what on earth I might do for the rest of the day.
