chapter 20 || don't shoot

"Hey! Shoo!" A voice shouted, causing me to groan as my eyes adjusted to the light.

It was around morning which meant we had survived a night! No arm was around my torso though, so I knew I was imagining things.

"Gosh Thomas, shut up" Minho groaned as he rolled on the floor.

"Fine, i'll let the crows eat you too" Thomas said sassily, nudging the boy with his foot slightly.

I yawned as I stood up, stretching my limbs and stepping outside. The scorch looked definitely different in the day than at night. It looked almost peaceful during the day.

"Okay, we should start going" Thomas' voice spoke from inside our shelter.

The group had been packing up the little amount of stuff that they had, Winston still lay on the floor, barely moving but letting out whimpers of pain every so often.

"Hey, how you doing?" I asked him as I kneeled down besides the boy.

"I'm okay" He said, putting a smile on his face.

Poor boy, he was suffering, yet still putting a smile on his face to seem okay.

I got up from the boy, grabbing a couple of my things before walking over to meet the rest. Fry helped keep Winston steady in the back of the group as we walked throughout the Scorch, I made sure to stay near Newt and Minho.

"I hope the whole world doesn't look like this" I said to the group as we walked through an abandoned broken down city.

"Hang on. Stop. Do you hear that?" Thomas asked as he turned around to face the rest of us. We all halted in our tracks, listening to whatever he had heard.

A loud rumble came from the sky, all of us looking up to see a large flying ship, making its way over to our abandoned city.

"Get down! Everybody, hide, hide, hide!" Thomas shouted as Newt dragged me over to a spot that was covered by trash and cement.

The rumbling noise grew louder as the ship came closer to us.

"What the shuck is that?" I asked to the group.

"A berg, they're Wickeds flying ships" Aris said to us.

"They're never going to stop looking for us, are they?" Minho wondered as we watched the ship fly by us.

As the noise got far enough away, Thomas stepped out from under our hiding spot, looking around at the others.

"Everyone okay?" He yelled out to them. We all cautiously made our way out.

"Yeah" We all replied.

The walk seemed like forever. The group grew tired, and almost all of the food and water was gone. We took small breaks along the way, but there was nowhere away from the sun.

We slowly made our way up a sand dune, looking at what lie ahead of us. More sand.

"A little further guys. Those mountains are where we're headed" Thomas said to us trying to sound optimistic. Key word - Trying.

"That's a long way off" I said to Thomas.

I didn't want to sound pessimistic, but we weren't going to make it... The mountains were far, and I don't think Winston had a lot of energy left.

"Then we better get moving" Thomas said to the group.

We all sighed, picking ourselves up and walking. We just always seemed to be walking. To be escaping... First escaping the maze, then Wicked, and then the Cranks. And now we're escaping the Scorch.

"Winston!" I shouted as the boy crumbled to the floor beside me. The rest of the group turned their eyes to us, looking to see what had happened.

"He's hurt pretty bad" Fry said aloud.

"No shit" Minho replied.

"Hey, language" Newt added.

"Winston, can you hear me?" I asked him as his eyes were still closed. He nodded his head slightly, sweat dripping down his head.

I rummaged through my bag, looking for my bottle of water.

"What are you doing?" Newt asked me as he knelt down on the sand.

"Finding my water bottle" I responded.

"Y/N, you barely have anymore water ar-" He begun as I cut him off.

"It's fine, I can live" I responded as I grabbed my water and took it out.

I put Winston's head on my lap, putting the rim of the water bottle to his mouth. His head was scorching hot.

"What are we going to do? We can't just leave him here..." I said to Thomas as we walked away from the group. Newt kept his eyes on us the whole time.

"I don't know..." He responded. Wow great idea.

I looked around our surroundings. Only two large sticks were in view. A stretcher!

"Hey, Minho!" I shouted at the boy as I quickened my pace back to the group.

"Yeah?" He asked, looking up from Winston's body.

"Go grab me those two sticks over there" I said, as I pointed to them sticking out of the floor. Him and Fry quickly rushed over, to the sticks, both of them grabbing one each.

"What's your idea?" Teresa asked me.

"We're going to make him a stretcher." I responded simply.

Teresa helped me tie the extra sheets that I had taken to the large sticks, Fry and Minho carefully placing Winston on it. We walked for what seemed like hours, even though it was probably only 10 minutes. Our bodies forced us to stop as a large rock came into view, giving us shade to rest.

I sat with my back against the rock, a top of the rock shading the top of our heads. Winston lay infront of us.

"It seems like they're just getting further" Newt mumbled.

"We just need to continue working" I said with a loud sigh.

Teresa and Thomas stood staring out into the sandy desert, while the rest of us stayed in the shade.

"Are you doing okay, Love?" Newt asked as he turned to face me.

"Yeah, I'm just thinking" I responded.

"You're always thinking, why don't you talk about it?" He asked.

"They took me at Wicked, and they injected me with stuff... I've been getting weird mood swings and these bruises started forming on my body..." I said as I lifted up part of my stomach, revealing bruises that lay around my back and torso.

"Y/N... What did they do to you?" He asked me. I just shrugged, ignoring his question. "I think I knew Aris before the maze"

"What?" Newt asked me.

"I've seen him in a dream before. The one where me an-" I begun

"Where they separated you... Y/N you have to te-" Newt had also begun before getting cut off by a loud boom.

I turned my head quickly to look at where the noise had come from. Winston lay with a gun in his hand, Fry standing over him. Thomas and Teresa quickly ran to us as the other swarmed around us too.

"Winston! What are you doing, man?" Fry asked, concern laced his voice.

"Give me that!" I yelled as Fry handed me the gun. My heart was beating extremely quickly at this point.

"What's going on?" Thomas asked.

"I-I don't know... He just woke up and grabbed the gun. And then he tried too..." Fry said as his voice trailed off.

"G-give it back... Please" Winston's voice shakily said out to us. His voice was rusty, dry.

"Winston, are you okay?" I asked as I knelt beside the boy.

He lifted up his shirt, revealing the bandaging that I had put on him days prior. The blood had begun seeping through and he tore off the bandaging, showing us a hole in his torso. Black veins reached all throughout his stomach, growing like roots throughout the rest of his body.

"It's growing... Inside of me" He said shakily. "I'm not gonna make it... Please. Please don't make me turn into one of those things" He pleaded as a tear rolled down his eyes.

My eyes started to water too by the sight of his state, just like when Chuck was shot.

I looked up to Newt as he now had taken the gun from my hand. He held it shakily, pointed at Winston, but then lowered it down. He placed the gun on Winston's shirt, moving his hand onto the gun.

"Newt, don't" I said through tears.

"T-Thank you" Winston said tiredly. His blinks grew slower, and beads of sweat were going down his body. "Now get them out of  here" He said to Newt.

"Goodbye, Winston" Newt said, his voice cracking slightly. He grabbed his backpack, looking back at Winston one last time before walking off to begin the next part of our adventure.

The rest of the group said their goodbyes, Thomas staying with Winston the longest out of all of them. I watched as tears began to slowly trickle down his face.

"Thomas... Take care of them" Winston spoke up to the boy. All Thomas could do was nod at his friend, words couldn't form, I guess.

Thomas stood out of the shade, allowing space with me and Winston.

"Thank you, Y/N" Winston said to me, using his last bit of energy.

"Oh, Winston, theres nothing to thank me for. You risked your life for us" I said through cries.

"I believe in you and Thomas. Keep them safe. Good luck" He said to me, giving me one last smile. I nodded at him, giving him one final smile back.

He closed his eyes slowly as I placed a small kiss on his forehead.

"I'll miss you, bye, Winston" I said to him before walking off and meeting with Thomas.

The group walked for less than five minutes before a shot rang through the air. My breathing hitched as the sound echoed into the distance, making us all stop in our steps.
