chapter 2 || not the right job

The party or bonfire had begun. I still was curious about almost everything, but continued to ignore it.

I sat myself behind a log, letting my back rest against it as I looked at the stone covered walls. New questions pondered through my mind. What's behind those walls? Why can't I get out?

Those thoughts were quickly broken up by a light pat on my shoulder.

I looked up from my spot as I was met with dark brown eyes and a toothy grin.

"Oh hi" I said, continuing the eye contact.

"Mind if I sit down?" Newt asked me, gesturing towards the floor.

I scooted over, a sign that he was welcome to sit down. The boy was holding a meat kebab and what seemed to be a jar of brownish murky liquid?

"Here try some" He said, staring off into the Glade as he handed me the jar.

"What is it?" I curiously asked the boy.

"I don't know really, It's Gally's secret recipe. All I know is it helps calm me down sometimes, try it" Newt said, motioning for me to take a sip.

I reluctantly took a rather large swig, spitting it out as soon as it touched my tongue. Newt laughed as he watched me spit it out. Y/N The name spun in my head. My name is Y/N!

"My name is Y/N." I said aloud quietly.

"What?" Newt asked. God his british accent had spoken through clearly.

"My name is Y/N" I said louder.

"You remembered your name! That's amazing, most of the greenies take a full week to remember their names" He said, lightly patting my back.

"Newt, can I ask you some questions?" I asked, breaking the small amount of silence that we had.

"Yeah, ask away" He replied, this time he had his body facing towards me.

Another set of footsteps came in before I could say anything. The Asian boy sat down next to Newt. He had hair that stuck up, even in these conditions?

"Oh Y/N, this is Minho, keeper of the runners" Newt said to me.

Minho had hair that shucking defied gravity. It stuck up 24/7, even if he was sweating.

"Okay, can you guys answer my questions now?" I asked the two.

"Yeah ask away" Minho said, positioning himself so he was comfortable.

"What's behind those walls?" I asked curiously.

"A maze. Grievers. Your death wish" Minho stated.

"Grievers? A death wish?" I questioned.

"Grievers are creatures that the creators put in here, don't worry, they only come out at night and they're stuck behind those doors, they can't get you from here" Newt said with a soft smile.

"The maze changes every night though, so that clicking and gear changing you hear is the maze" Minho added in.

I nodded to the two. This was a lot to take in for my first day.

"How long have you two been here for?" I asked.

"Two years." Minho said quietly.

I was surprised. They've been in here for two years?

"We all have been through the same thing. Not knowing who we are, where we came from, or what our past is." Newt added.

I felt sorry for the 2, and the group of boys that have been here. It amazed me how long they've been here for.

As the night went on, I conversed with Newt and Minho more. Observing as Gally beat up more boys.

Later in the night, we all left to our hammocks. Mine was in between Newt's and Minho's. I tossed and turned almost all night. Noises sounded from the maze. Horrific noises. Screeches, gears changing, everything. Low snores were also heard, but I listened closely to the noises from the maze.

I would say I got three hours of sleep before being woken by a hand placed on my mouth. I squirmed before opening my eyes to be met with Newt's dark chocolate brown eyes staring at me. He had his pointer finger on his lips as a key for me to stay quiet.

"Follow me" He whispered to me.

I reluctantly followed him, slowly getting up from my hammock. The sun looked to just be out, and the maze's doors were still closed. Everyone around me still fast asleep besides Frypan who was cooking breakfast.

"Where are we going?" I asked Newt as I put on my shoes.

"Just follow me" He replied.

He hadn't answered my question which annoyed me, but I still followed him.

Newt had lead me to the maze walls. As we got closer I noticed names carved into the wall. Different names. Some were crossed out, but you could still make out the words.

"You're one of us now, here." He said to me, handing me a knife. "Just carve your name on the wall"

I walked closer to the wall, placing the knife on the stone. I carved out my name next to Newt's and Minho's. Stepping back I let myself look at the names.

"Why are some crossed out?" I asked placing my hand on the names.

"Those are for the people who, um, died while being here." Newt said awkwardly.

A wave of sadness washed over me. About five ish names were marked out.

I sat at breakfast, looking at my food. Today was the day I was going to try being a slicer. Newt was going to take me to meet the keeper of the slicers.

"Winston, meet Y/n. Y/n, meet Winston" Newt said to the two of us.

I held my hand out for Winston, and he shook it. He was around Newt's height, so he was a couple of inches taller than me. He had black hair that didn't have as much airtime as Minho's had.

"Welcome to the Blood House" Winston said with a smile.

The area reeked of animals, what the Glader's called klunk, and blood.

"You'll get used to the smell the more you work here" Winston said with a small smile. "Us Slicers feed and raise the animals, we also kill the animals for Frypan." He added

The boy showed me around. I was gonna be stuck as a slicer for the whole day.

I winced each time they killed an animals. Winston laughed a little each time as he watched me look disgusted.

I ached for lunch to start, as much as Winston was fun to talk to, I hated it in here.

"How was being a slicer?" Newt asked as we sat at the table.

"Disgusting... How many more jobs do I have to try?" I asked.

"Just a few more." He replied as we ate.

"And those are?"

"The builders, they built most of the Glade. The sloppers, but that's only if you suck at every job, you just do the dirty work for everyone. Then we have the cooks, but that's only Frypan, so you'd just help around with getting everything for him. We also have the med-jacks, they're the closest thing we have to doctors and medical care here. I'm a track-hoe, and we just do the farming. And we the runners, Minho is the keeper of them. Lastly, we have the baggers. No one wants that job though" Newt said.

"What's a bagger do?" I asked curiously, wondering why no one wanted that job.

"Uhm, they're take care of the gladers who died, they get buried over there."

"What's over there?" I pointed. From where we were sitting it looked to just be a group of trees creating a forest.

"The Deadheads, it's a good spot to get away and think, no one goes over there." I nodded slowly

This was all a lot to take in. New spaces that I hadn't uncovered before and new jobs.
