chapter 8 ||runner(s)?

I woke up, being dragged as the sun was rising. What the shuck? I thought to myself. A sturdy grip was held at my waist as my arm was flung over someones neck. I opened my eyes slightly to see stone walls surrounding me.

"What?" I mumbled as I moved my arm to rub my eyes. The hand gasped as the person holding me quickly made their way in front of me.

"Oh thank god Y/N, you gave me a scare!" Thomas said as he embraced me in a quick hug. I noticed Minho was walking behind us.

"What happened?" I asked.

"You almost killed your self that's what happened!" Minho shouted.

"Gee, way to lighten the mood, Minho" I said with an eye-roll.

"I could've been killed too!" Minho responded with a loud whine.

"You weren't even by the Grievers!" I argued back.

"The Grievers wouldn't kill me, Newt would" He stated, crossing his arms on his chest. I laughed at his little statement as we continued walking. My head ached as I looked up to the sun, but I felt safe in the walls when the light was out.

We walked  for what seemed like hours, but was probably only 20 minutes. We had been running almost all night.

"There" I pointed up at the tall walls as I saw a figure dangling from the vines. Alby was still intact and still swaying in the wind.

"Okay, you guys ready to get him down?" Thomas asked us, as he held onto one side of the vines, Minho nodded, climbing to untangle the vines that strapped securely around Alby's limp body.

It took them a rough five minutes to get the poor guy down. Lot's of profanities from Minho's mouth that I had learned were not allowed to be said in the Glade, and lots of pebbles being thrown at each other.

"Are we ready?" Minho asked us. It was the last sprint in the maze before returning back to our 'home'. Thomas and I nodded eagerly as we made our way out.

It was a short walk from there. We didn't mind to run, we had survived in the maze for a full night without any major injuries. We could survive five minutes with walking. The sun had now fully risen, and it looked to be about the time the Gladers woke from their slumber.

As we turned the corner, we saw the Glade! Some Gladers had begun walking away from the doors as we were returning, probably not believing we could make it out of their intact with all of our limbs.

"There!" I heard a voice say that I could easily recognize. It was Chuck's voice, and as his figure became smaller, I could see him pointing at us.

By then, a hoard of Gladers made their way surrounding the stone doors, all of them eager to greet us. A sigh of relief washed over everyones faces, including mine. While the Glade was never really a home, it was the closest thing I have.

"What happened out there?" Newt said as he rushed over to me. I melted in his arms as my legs began to give out.

Clint and Jeff taking Alby away to the hut.

"How did you guys make it out?" Someone else asked as we were still catching our breaths.

"You see a Griever?" One of the Gladers asked us.

"Yeah, we saw one" Thomas spoke up.

"Thomas didn't just see it, he killed it" Minho said with a large smile plastered onto his face.

There was a lot of whispering and gasps when Minho had stated that, I gasped too.

"Thomas killed a Griever while I was passed out?! You didn't feel the need to wake me?" I asked , mockingly holding a hand to my chest.

Newt leaned close to my ear.

"You were knocked out?" He whispered as we sat on the grass. I looked into his eyes for the first time. My reflection bounced off his glassy eyes and I realized how messy I looked.

"Yes, I'm fine though. I was in very good hands" I said to the blond reassuringly, giving him a small smile. He nodded.

Fry had made us all food, but it was quickly demolished in a matter of five minutes. All of us starving from running and screaming all night.

After finishing our food, we went to the Homestead for a group meeting. Gally, unfortunately, was not very happy with us.

"Things are changing. Theres no denying that" Gally begun. Shuck, we were going to be in bigger trouble than I had expected.

All of us were scattered around in the hut. Some of us leaning on random poles, and some of us sitting down on the floor. I sat next to Thomas on the floor.

"First, Ben gets stung in broad daylight. And then Alby does. And now Greenie and Y/N here, have taken it upon themselves to go into the maze..." I look around, feeling guilty. I had broken one of the rules, so Gally wasn't wrong.

"Which is a clear violation of our rules here." Gally added.

"Yeah.. but they did save Alby's life" Newt chimed in.

"Did they?" Gally asked, hands on his hips. Again, he had a point. We didn't know if Alby was alive. He could be on the brink of death.

"For three years, we have coexisted with these rules. And now, you both have killed one of them." Gally said with a loud sigh. Almost the whole time, he was pacing the small room.

"Who knows what that could mean for us?"

"Well, what do you suggest we do?" Newt asked, his hand had been gently brushing his bottom lip like he was deep in thought.

"They have to be punished" Gally stated. My mouth fell open slightly at what Gally had just suggested.

"Come on. He killed a Griever! And Y/N risked her life for her friends!" Minho argued. Didn't realize how quiet Minho had been. He'd usually be jumping off the walls.

"Minho, you were with them, what do you think?" Newt asked, bringing some peace back to the conversation. All eyes turned to Minho.

"I think... in all the time we've been here... no one has ever killed a Griever before. When I turned and tail ran, pulling Y/N away from Thomas, only for her to go running back to help, these dumb shanks stayed to help Alby." Minho said to the group.

"Look, I don't know if they're dumb or stupid or suicidal for shucks sake. But whatever they are, we need more of it. I say we make them runners." Minho finished with a smirk as he stared at me and Thomas.

"Minho, lets not jump the gun here" Fry begun, only to be interrupted by a chant.

"Y/N! Thomas! Y/N!" Chuck repeated over again, moving his arm up and down. I chuckled at the boy before returning my attention.

"Look, if you wanna give the two a parade, that's fine. Go ahead, but if theres one thing I know about the maze-" Gally said, only to be interrupted by a loud noise. All of our eyes widened as we recognized the noise.

The box.
