Reconnecting

It had been a couple hours since his mom called, so Izaya was slowly pacing behind his couch, waiting for his parents to arrive. He had asked Shizuo to get some refreshments ready since he knew his parents would want to catch him up on the past year and a half.

Izaya froze as soon as he heard a knock at his door. He felt a twinge of anxiety begin to rise in his chest.

"Th-they're here, Shizuo," he nervously said. He felt Shizuo's hand gently rub his back.

"It'll be alright, Izaya," Shizuo said as Izaya gripped his vest. He took a deep breath and allowed Shizuo to guide him to the door.

As soon as Shizuo opened the door, all Izaya heard was his sister exclaim "Izaya!" before he felt something tackle him to the ground. Instinctively, he put his arms behind him so that he landed with his arms keeping him from hitting his head.

"Mairu," he heard his mother say. "What have I told you about tackling your brother?"

"Sorry," he felt his sister get up off of him. "I'll be careful next time."

"You're going to have to be careful from now on," Izaya felt Shizuo place his hand on his shoulder. Grabbing onto it, he allowed Shizuo to help him up. "He can't see you coming anymore."

"Can't see me?" Izaya heard silence as he waited for his sisters to finish checking his eyesight.

"Izaya?" he felt his mother gently place her hand on his cheek. "Are you really..?" Izaya grabbed his mother's hand and nodded sadly.

"I'm so sorry," he apologized. "I should have told you sooner, but..." He could feel tears beginning to fill his eyes. "I... I was just so scared... I didn't know what you would think... You were always so proud of me... I didn't want to ruin that..." He felt a single tear escape and roll down his cheek before he felt his mother bring him in for a hug.

"We still are, sweetheart," his mother said. "You being blind now isn't going to change that." Izaya smiled and returned his mother's hug; allowing a few more tears to escape.

"So, Shizuo is living with you now?" Mairu asked. They had all moved over to the "living room" section of his apartment. Izaya nodded.

"He's been my aid for just over a month now," he felt Shizuo rest his hand over his. "Neither of us were too thrilled about it."

"Especially you," Shizuo remarked. Izaya gently pushed his arm.

"Shut up," he chuckled. "But, we seem to have gotten used to each other a lot more. I don't hate him as much as I used to."

"Well that's good," his dad replied. "I'm glad to see you two starting to get along. I remember when you and Shinra first told us about him."

"Oh, yeah," his mom started laughing. "You two had such an argument about him."

"I remember," Izaya chuckled. "Guess he wasn't completely wrong about him."

"I hate to be nosy, but when is Kuro coming over?" Izaya tensed at his mother's question.

"Well, you see.." he hesitated, not wanting to think of his ex. He felt Shizuo's hand rub his shoulder and he started to relax.

"Kuro isn't coming over," he finally said. "We.. we broke up over a year ago.."

"Oh honey," Izaya felt his mother grab his hand. "I'm so sorry to hear that."

"Don't be," he said. "He decided to be a real asshole a month before we broke up."

"Well, at least you've ended things with him. I'd hate to see him hurt you; especially now." Izaya smiled.

"Even if he did try to come after me," he replied. "I've got Shizu-chan to protect me."

"So long as Shizuo promises to keep my baby safe," his mom requested.

"I've already promised him that I'll never let him feel completely alone again," Shizuo responded. "I'll make sure he's safe. Including from Kuro."

"Thank you," Izaya felt his mom give him a hug. "We should really be going now." Izaya stood up. "It was great to see you again sweetheart."

"It was great talking with you guys again," he felt his dad come over for a hug. "I really missed you."

"Next time, you should come visit us," his mom suggested. "Just give us some warning in advance so we can make some signs for Shizuo."

"Mom," Izaya felt his cheeks warm as he blushed at his mom's suggestion. He heard his mom chuckle.

"I'm only teasing you," she said. "But you should still come over to visit. I know you won't be able to see it, but it'd be nice to have you at home again."

"I'll try," Izaya smiled. "So long as those two don't come flying at me as soon as I walk in the door." He signaled towards his sisters, who he heard trying to sneak up from the other side of the couch.

"Hey!" he heard Mairu complain.

"Just because my eyesight is gone doesn't mean I can't hear you," he said turning his head slightly.

"We can try, but no promises." Izaya laughed.

"I understand," he gave his mom another hug. "I love you."

"We love you too," his mom released him from the hug. "Hope to see you again soon."
