A Week At Least

"Hmm..." Izaya sat on Shinra's couch as his friend examined his eyes. The whole thing made him nervous; not because he didn't believe in Shinra, but because Shizuo was standing not too far from him.

"Yup, it's official," Shinra said as he stood up. "Your eyesight is going. It won't be too long before you're completely blind." Izaya's eyes widened at the statement.

"What!?" he asked. "I'm going to be completely blind?" Shinra nodded sadly.

"I'm sorry." Izaya looked down at his feet and brought his hands to his head.

'What am I going to do now? I can't continue to be an info broker if I'm blind. How am I supposed to work?' He didn't want to say it out loud since his monster was right there, but the thought of him going blind terrified Izaya.

"You're going to need an aid from now on," Shinra told him. "Someone who you can trust to help you navigate the city without feeling lost. Is there anyone you know of who'd be willing to help you?"

Izaya shook his head. "Not since Namie started working for your dad."

"Hmm. Well, I'd like to help you out, but you know how my work can be," Izaya sighed. He knew far too well just how demanding Shinra's patients could be. Heck, most of them were some of his regulars too.

"I hate to ask it," Shizuo spoke up. "But if the flea doesn't have anyone else to look after him, I'll help him out." Izaya immediately sat straight up.

"Oh no," he objected. "I'm not going to let you guide me around. I'd rather let Namie guide me than let you help."

"Hey, I'm not too excited about this either," Shizuo replied. "Unless you can think of someone else who can help you without driving you insane, you're stuck with me." Izaya started to open his mouth to respond, but stopped himself.

'Shizu-chan's right. The only other people I could trust is my family; and the whole reason I don't regularly visit or talk with them is because they drive me insane.' Izaya sighed in defeat and nodded. "Alright, but there's no guarantee that I'll like it."

"Now that that's settled," Shinra clapped his hands together before turning to Shizuo. "I should go over what it is that you'll be doing."

Izaya carefully walked out onto Shinra's balcony and stared up at the sky. The info broker stood there for a moment before sighing and turning to go back inside.

"How long does he have before his eyesight is gone?" Izaya heard Shizuo ask their friend as he walked inside.

"I'd say he has a week at least left," Shinra replied. Izaya froze.

'A-a week?' He leaned against the wall to steady himself. 'Only a week before I can no longer see my lovely humans.' He quickly shook his head to keep himself from crying. It was bad enough Shizuo had to see him struggling with his eyesight.
