A New Way to Communicate

Knock, knock, knock!

Izaya stood behind Shizuo, tightly gripping the back of his vest. Because the elevator had a couple extra people, Izaya didn't want to be near them and decided to hide behind the blonde.

He heard a lock click and the door open.

"Shizuo?" He heard Shinra ask. "Shouldn't you be with Izaya?"

"Well.." Izaya felt Shizuo's hand on his back and was gently guided to his side.

"Izaya?" His response sounded like a surprise, but Izaya could hear the concern hidden underneath.

"Shinra?" He reached out and felt the edge of his friend's face. Using it as a guide, he slowly moved his hand until he found Shinra's glasses. Relieved that it actually was him, Izaya relaxed. "Shinra.."

He felt Shinra move his hand so that he was now gripping his sleeve. He felt Shinra lean closer.

"Izaya.." he paused. "You can't see me, can you?" Izaya shook his head. He heard Shinra sigh sadly. "Come on in." Izaya felt Shinra guide him into the apartment and onto the couch.

"I'll be right back," Shinra told him as he removed Izaya's hand from his sleeve. Not wanting to feel completely alone, Izaya reached out for Shizuo and immediately felt his hand.

Then, he heard footsteps come from the hallway. They sounded lighter than Shinra's.

"Hey, Celty," he heard Shizuo greet the person. He heard quick typing. "It's about Izaya." Izaya heard Celty walk around the couch so that she was in front of him. He heard some typing before silence.

"Um, Celty," Shizuo spoke up. "He can't see what you're typing. His eyesight is completely gone." Izaya felt Celty's hand on his face before she gave him a gentle hug.

"I'm sorry, Celty," Izaya said. "I wish I could talk with you the same way as before." He could feel his eyes starting to tear up again. "But I know that'll never happen."

"Actually, there is a way you two can talk again," Shinra spoke up. Izaya perked up.

"Really?" Izaya felt Shinra place his hand on his sleeve again.

"Mhm, it's called braille," Shinra answered as he examined Izaya's eyes. "It's a system of raised bumps that create words and phrases. It's how people without eyesight are able to read. I could teach you if you'd like."

"Please Shinra?" Izaya pleaded. "I want to be able to talk with Celty again."

"We can start right now since you're here," Izaya heard Shinra close up his bag. "But you're going to have to practice more at your place until it becomes second nature."

"Of course," Using Shinra's arm, Izaya pulled his friend in for a hug. "Thank you, Shinra."

"Happy to help a friend," Shinra replied as he returned the hug.
