2.41. The finish line

The amount of time it took Harry to actually leave for Manchester on Saturday morning was ridiculous. He kept changing his mind about going every 2 minutes, and Louis kept having to tell him to go.

"Please don't come out of there today or tomorrow" Harry said as he bent down to speak to the bump "Please".

"She won't" Louis said confidently.

"Last chance for you to tell me to stay" Harry told him.

"I won't do that" Louis denied.

"Just stay in bed, okay? The less active you are, the less chances you go into labor" Harry proposed.

"Sure, babe" Louis agreed "Now go".

"Okay" Harry sighed, and kissed his lips, and then called his daughters "Quinny, Willa Bear, we're leaving".

The girls were dressed and ready, and had been watching the telly while Harry loaded the car, so they came to the front door, Willa had her favorite doll with her and Quinn had a stuffed cat.

Louis bent down as best he could and gave the girls hugs and told them to have a good time, and that he would miss them, then gave another kiss goodbye to Harry and they were on the way.

To be honest, although Louis had told Harry not to worry, and that he wasn't going to go into labor, he knew there was no way for him to know what would happen, and it was a possibility for him to start at any time.

So he took Harry's advise, and he stayed home all day, he didn't even take Roxy out for a walk, he just let her go to the backyard and run around on her own for a while.

When Harry called that night, while Louis was getting ready for bed, the first thing he asked was if anything had happened.

"Everything is fine, Morgan has had no intentions to come out" Louis assured his husband.

"Okay, good" Harry accepted.

"How's everything over there?" Louis asked.

"Mostly good" Harry replied "We came straight to Angelina and Robert's house when we arrived, we had lunch, the girls played with their cousins, and I didn't fight with anyone, but made sure to tell them that the only reason why we were there was because you insisted".

"And what did they say about that?".

"Nothing" Harry replied "We stayed until I decided it had been enough, and now we're at my mum's".

"Were the girls okay?".

"Yeah, they had fun".

"So you didn't go to the cemetery?" Louis wondered.

"No, we're going tomorrow morning, then we're having lunch and going straight back home" Harry explained "We should be back around 6".

"I'll make a nice dinner to welcome you back" Louis decided.

"Don't strain yourself though" Harry warned him.

"I won't" Louis rolled his eyes.

"Tell Morgan I love her, and to stay in your belly for at least another 24 hours" Harry told him.

"I'll tell her" Louis accepted "I love you".

"I love you more" Harry said back "See you tomorrow".

"Bye, babe" Louis said and ended the call.

He went to bed then, but it took him a while to fall asleep, because either Morgan had grown too much or shifted her position a little, because she kept kicking Louis' ribs and it was very painful.

Somehow he fell asleep when the tiredness won over the discomfort, but he woke up feeling achy, and still tired.

At around 3, Louis got a text from Harry saying they'd left later than planned, but that they'd be home at 7. So Louis kept his plan to make a nice dinner and he set out to do cook it, which was ready by the time he heard the front door opening.

"Mummy" Quinn said as she came running to him.

"Hi, my baby, how was the trip?" Louis asked her as he hugged her.

"Long and I'm hungry" Quinn pouted.

"Dinner's ready, go wash your hands and then sit at the table" Louis instructed.

Willa came in next, and she complained about being hungry too, so Louis gave her the same instruction.

And finally Harry came into the kitchen looking tired, but he smiled when he saw Louis.

"Look, I'm still pregnant!" Louis announced as he pointed at his belly.

"I can see that" Harry chuckled, and wrapped his long arms around Louis "I missed you, babe".

"I missed you too" Louis said as he took in Harry's hug, he loved this man so much it was ridiculous "Baby girl missed you too, she kicked the second you spoke".

Harry was smiling when let go of Louis, and he put his hand on the belly, and talked to the baby.

"Thank you for waiting for me" Harry told her "You can come out now if you want, little one".

"I hope she does soon" Louis sighed "I had the worst night".

"Why?" Harry wondered.

"She kicking my ribs all night" Louis pouted and looked down at his 38 week bump "She's too big now".

"I'm sorry, baby" Harry pouted "Why don't you go sit down, I'll bring the food to the table".

"Thanks" Louis smiled.

Nothing labor related happened for the rest of the day, and neither did on Monday or Tuesday. On Wednesday though, Louis got excited when in the middle of the day Morgan dropped, he actually felt it and it was visible how low his belly was, but besides helping the run kicking, nothing else happened.

On Sunday Louis officially turned 39 weeks pregnant, and at that point he was done.

"She's going to be 5 years old when she comes out" Louis decided.

He was laying in bed on a mountain of pillows, which he needed in order to be comfortable.

"Don't be silly" Harry said, he was laying on his side on the bed, and he was softly rubbing Louis belly after he had pulled his T-shirt up "She'll be out soon".

Suddenly the door was pushed open, and the twins came inside in their pajamas, and they climbed on the bed as their parents said good morning to them. Willa going straight to her dad, while Quinn went to Louis and he hugged his belly. She always did that.

"Quinny, tell baby sister to come out" Louis told her as he softly brushed her hair back with his fingers.

"Baby sister, come out!" Quinny told the belly, and then put her ear on it.

"Is she saying something back?" Louis wondered.

"No" Quinn denied "Will she be here soon?".

"We hope so, Quinny" Louis replied.

"Probably sometime this week" Harry told his daughter.

"When do you think she'll come Willa?" Louis asked the other girl.

"Tomorrow" Willa declared, and then she yawned and cuddled with her dad.

"I hope you're right, little one" Louis sighed.

When they finally decided to get up, they had breakfast, and decided to get ready to go out for a family walk. It was the middle of November, so it was cold, but it wasn't raining today, which had been for the past few days, so it was nice to walk.

"Babe, can you help me with my shoes?" Louis asked his husband.

"Yeah" Harry said and right away bent down, and laced Louis' sneakers for him "You're all done".

"Thanks" Louis said and sighed.

"Are you okay?" Harry asked.

"Yeah, just tired of all of this" Louis sighed.

Because although Louis had loved being pregnant, because carrying his baby was a gift he had never taken for granted, at this stage he was over it, there was nothing magical about it at this point.

"We don't have to go for a walk if you don't want to" Harry pointed out.

"No, I want to" Louis insisted.

"Alright".

Harry called the girls over, who put on their little boots on their own, after Harry helped get their beanies and their coats on, they left the house, bringing Roxy along too.

Harry held Roxy's leach, while Louis walked beside him using his hands to support his back, and the girls walked in front of them together, but every time they tried to go too far away Harry would call them back.

After 20 minutes or so, they made it to the park, and while Louis didn't waste time to sit down, the twins didn't waste time to go to the swings.

"Go push their swings, I'll stay here with Roxy" Louis said as he took the leash from Harry.

"Alright" Harry said and went over to the swings.

Louis just watched them for a while, then checked his phone for a while, and while he was doing that he felt a cramp in his belly.

Was that a real contraction?

It passed, and maybe 10 minutes later Harry came back when the girls got bored of the swing and went to play to the monkey bars.

"Are you okay?" Harry asked him.

"I had a contraction" Louis replied.

"A real one?" Harry wondered.

"I don't know..." Louis said as he rubbed his belly, which started contracting again "Ow".

"Baby..." Harry said hesitantly.

"Oww" Louis couldn't help complaining.

"What do I do?" Harry asked panicking.

"Nothing" Louis brushed off once he stopped feeling pain "It stopped".

"But it sounded a lot more painful that those practice contractions you've been having" Harry pointed out.

"It was" Louis admitted.

"Then maybe you're really in labor" Harry suggested.

"Let's just wait until we know for sure if it's the real thing or not, because it might not be, I still have a week to go" Louis proposed.

"Okay, but I think we should at least go home so if it turns out it's labor we have what we need to bring to he hospital" Harry decided as he took Roxy's leash from him.

"Yeah, okay" Louis agreed.

"Willa! Quinn!" Harry called as he got up.

Louis stood up on his own as he held his belly with one arm, feeling very nervous about what might happen soon.

"Girls we're going home!" Harry called again.

"But I wanna stay longer" Willa said as she came running back.

"I know, but we have to go, love" Harry told her "Quinn!".

Louis noticed Quinn wasn't coming, so Harry told Willa to stay with Louis, and went to get Quinn, bringing her back a few minutes.

They started to head back, Louis walking slowly, but he didn't get a new contraction until they were halfway home, and it was painful, a lot more painful than the Braxton hicks contracts he had felt before.

"Oh, god" Louis complained under his breath.

"Did you say something?" Harry asked, he was walking next to him, one hand holding Louis', while his other was busy with Roxy.

"Another contraction, I'm pretty sure it's labor" Louis said and let go of a puff of air "Oww".

"We'll grab your things at home and go straight to the hospital" Harry decided could hear in his voice that he was panicking.

"Why are we going to the hospital?" Quinn asked as she turned around.

"Quinny, gives us a second, love" Harry told his daughter "Lou?".

"Sorry... uhm" Louis considered "The contractions are not close enough to go to the hospital yet".

"What are constructions?" Willa wondered.

"Contractions are what I feel in my belly that lets me know your little sister might be born soon" Louis explained as he contraction faded.

"Like today?" Quinn asked.

"Maybe" Louis replied.

"Finally!" Quinn declared.

Louis chuckled, and it helped him relax a little as they made their way home. His next contraction came just as they arrived home, and Louis stayed outside until it went away.

"Are you sure we shouldn't go to the hospital now?" Harry asked as he came out for him, he had gone to open the door for the girls and the dog "We can drop the girls off at your nan's".

"No, the doctors said we should go when contractions are regularly 6 minutes apart, and they're like 15 minutes" Louis pointed out "Just help me get upstairs, I want to lay down on the bed".

Harry helped him up the stairs, where Louis laid down on his side as he took a deep breath.

"Are you okay?" Harry wondered, and stroked his cheek lovingly.

"I'm good" Louis nodded.

"I'm gonna call my mum, okay? So she can take care of the girls while we're at the hospital" Harry explained.

Louis nodded, and watched as Harry called his mother, announced that Louis was in labor, and when he ended the call, he told him that she was coming down to Brighton right away.... but that would take at least 4 hours.

At first Louis thought 4 hours was a lot, and that she wouldn't arrive before they had to go to the hospital, so that they would have to drop the girls off at Louis' nan's place before going to the hospital, but it turned out he was wrong.

During the first hour Louis felt alright, the contractions were manageable and very spread out, so it was fine, then they became a little closer together, but not that much, and by the fourth hour since coming home, his contractions were still 11 minutes apart.

Throughout it all, Louis had tried a lot of things, laying down, standing, sitting, squatting, walking, he had even taken a shower, but he soon realized that there was nothing that was going to make the pain better... maybe the epidural would once they went to the hospital.

While Louis was going though all of this, Harry was running around the house making sure everything was packed and in the car, keeping an eye on the girls, and making them lunch, and at the same time supporting Louis, giving him kisses, pressing his back, just doing anything he could for him to be comfortable.

It was mid afternoon when Anne finally arrived, and Louis could see the relief in Harry's face when it happened, to be honest, he was relieved too, because he had been trying to play it cool for the girls, specially when Willa came into the room at some point. But Anne, being the best mother in law and grandmother, took the girls out, which allowed Louis to be loud if he wanted.

"Owww" Louis complained as he kneeled on the floor of his room "This is horrible".

"I'm so sorry, baby" Harry said apologetically "Do you want me to press your back again?".

"No" Louis shook his head, and wiped the tears from his eyes.

"What can I do?".

"Nothing" Louis sighed as he held his belly, and took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry you have to go through this".

"It's worth it, Morgan's worth it" Louis said, which was what he had been repeating to himself.

Harry's mum came back about 2 hours later with the girls, just as Louis and Harry were about to leave for the hospital because Louis' contractions finally started to get closer together.

"Harry" Louis said once they were in the car.

"Yes, babe?" Harry asked as he focused on the road.

"I think I ruined your seat" Louis said as he felt water pooling under him.

"What do you mean?" Harry frowned.

"My water broke" Louis announced.

"Oh my god".

"I'm sorry about the seat" Louis apologized.

"Don't worry that, are you okay?" Harry questioned.

"I'm okay" Louis said and let go of a puff of air "This just means we'll meet Morgan soon".

The transition to the hospital went without any complications, and when Louis was examined he was told that he was 4 cm dilated, which they said meant that he would be able to have the epidural soon.

"Harry, I can't do this" Louis suddenly told his husband.

"I know it hurts and it's scary, but you can do it, baby" Harry said sweetly.

"I mean being a mum, I can't be a mum, I can't,  I'm going to ruin Morgan's life, she's going to hate me" Louis started to rant "I can't do it".

"Hey, look at me" Harry said as he held his hand tightly, so Louis looked "You are already a mum, and you're amazing at it, so don't say you can't be a mum, don't let fear get the best of you".

Louis looked into Harry's green eyes, and they were so sweet and kind, but how could he believe him?

"You're the best mummy" Harry whispered, and gave him a little kiss on the lips "The best mummy in the world, yeah? Please believe that because it's true".

Louis nodded, and closed his eyes while he felt his belly contracting again, which was getting so painful.

An hour later, the anesthesiologist finally came to Louis' room to give him the epidural, which kind of hurt, but it was temporary pain, and he was looking forward to feeling none.

"Are you feeling better?" the midwife asked him about 20 minutes after the doctor left.

"No" Louis said, he was laying on his back, and he felt like the world was spinning.

"No? You still feel the contractions?" The midwife asked.

"No, but..." Louis closed his eyes, he felt life shït!

"Baby are you cold? You're shivering" Harry suddenly pointed out.

"I don't know... I..." Louis said, and tried to stop shaking, but it was uncontrollable "I don't feel well".

"It's the epidural, it makes some people a bit shaky" the midwife explained.

"I'm going to throw up" Louis announced.

The midwife was very good at her job, because she instantly put a plastic hospital bowl in front of him, and he threw up in it. He hadn't thrown up since the beginning of his pregnancy, and he felt disgusting.

"I'm sorry" Louis apologized when he was done emptying his guts.

"It's okay, love" the midwife said sympathetically.

"I hate this" Louis said as he laid down again, and closed his eyes "I feel horrible".

"Is this normal?" Harry asked the midwife.

"It's not uncommon, it's a side effect of the epidural" the midwife asked.

"Take the epidural away" Louis complained.

"If they take it away, you'll be in pain again" Harry tried to reason.

"I don't care" Louis cried while he still shivered "I feel like shït!".

"Louis, we can't take way what it's already in you" the midwife explained "It's going to wear of in a few hours, though, and if you don't want anymore, we won't give you anymore".

"Okay" Louis accepted.

"Maybe you can try to sleep".

"I can't" Louis denied "I want to throw up again".

And so he did, but after that he rinsed his mouth, and Harry brought him his toothbrush, which made him feel better, but he kept being shaky and dizzy.

"I want my nan" Louis suddenly decided "Can you tell her to come?".

"It's almost 10 PM babe, she's probably getting ready for bed" Harry pointed out.

"Please?" Louis begged "I need her".

"Okay, I'll call her, just try to rest" Harry advised.

Louis still felt horrible, but he still closed his eyes, but he couldn't sleep, everything was spinning in his head, and he was still shaking.

"How's he doing?" Helen's voice suddenly asked.

Louis didn't know how long it had been.

"He got the epidural, which made the pain better, but he started shivering like crazy, and he threw up, and he said he felt horrible" Harry explained.

"Is he asleep?" Helen asked.

"No, he's awake, he's just very tired".

"Lou, my darling?" Helen said and Louis felt her hand on his forehead.

"Nan" Louis said as he opened his eyes.

"Hi, my love" Helen smiled "How are you feeling?".

"Not great" Louis sighed, and felt his mouth was pasty "This is hard".

"Yes, I know, but you're doing a fantastic job" Helen told him "And we're going to meet your daughter soon".

"Yeah" Louis nodded "Can I have water?".

"Here, baby" Harry said, and immediately offered him a cup with a straw in it, which Louis drank for, and it made him feel better.

Louis drank all the water, and then he closed his eyes again, and he felt his nan's hand on his forehead and his hair. And it reminded him of every time he had been sick, either physically or mentally, as a child, as a teenager and as an adult, and she had always been there to comfort him.

"Nan, please stay" Louis begged as he opened his eyes again "For the birth, I need you".

"Maybe it should just be Harry and you" Helen considered.

"No" Louis shook his head, and then looked at Harry "She can stay, right?".

"Yes" Harry replied quickly "It's all up to you, my love".

"Then stay nan, please" Louis begged.

"Alright, I'll stay" Helen agreed, and she kept  petting him "Now close your eyes and rest, you're going to need all your energy to push".

Louis nodded, and closed his eyes again, but because he still felt like shït, we wasn't able to fall asleep. Then slowly, but surely, the epidural started to wear off, and because he didn't want any more of it, he started feeling the contractions again.

And now they were worse, but as bad as they were, Louis rather endure that than what the epidural did to him.

But it really was horrible, he had never been in so much physical pain in his life, but between his husband and his nan's help he was able to endure it.

"Oh, god" Louis hissed, his eyes watery "Harry".

"It's okay, I'm here" Harry assured him, and held his hand "I'm here".

"It hurts so bad" Louis complained.

"I know" Harry said apologetically "But you're doing a great job".

"I feel pressure" Louis said as he tried to escape the pain and the pressure by turning to his side.

"Do you want to push?" Harry asked as he pressed the call button.

"I don't know..." Louis said as he tried to hold on to Harry "Oh my god, I can't do this".

"You can do this, Lou" Helen told him.

Louis was checked then, and he was told he was all the way dilated, and the bed was put in a pushing position, while Harry stood on his left side, his nan on his right. Now the strong contractions were definitely telling him that his body was ready to push, and he wanted to, but it was scary.

"Are you ready?" the doctor asked.

Louis nodded, but he couldn't speak, he was in too much pain and shock and... he had feelings he couldn't even describe.

They made him pull his legs back, and then he had to go ahead, and he pushed for the first time.

"Push harder than that" the doctor encouraged him.

Louis took a deep breath and pushed again, harder this time, and somehow he felt better, it felt like he was helping his body do what it was meant to do.

"You're doing amazing, my love" Harry said when Louis was told to stop pushing.

"It's hard" Louis complained.

"But you're amazing" Harry insisted.

Then the pushing started again, and he pushed and pushed and pushed.

"Good job on that last one, we're going to have this baby out very soon" the doctor announced.

Louis let his head rest, and he looked at the ceiling trying to get it together, because he suddenly felt like he wasn't in control, and he didn't like that, it was making him uneasy.

"You have to push again, Louis" the doctor instructed.

"Come on, my love" Harry told him.

Louis nodded, took a deep breath and pushed down again as hard as he could, his nails digging into his legs as he pushed.

"Push, push, push" the doctor encouraged him "Head's coming".

"Good job, baby, you're doing so well" Harry said next to him "Her head is starting to come out".

Louis didn't have to be told that his daughter's head was coming out because he could feel every second of it, and he screamed as he pushed her head out, it was unbearable pain, he didn't think such strong physical pain was possible.

"Louis don't push for a moment" the doctor stopped him as he was about to push again.

So Louis stopped, his breathing ragged, and he felt Harry's hand pushing his hair back, and then kissing his temple, but he just laid there, he didn't have energy for anything else.

"She's almost here, Lou, our girl is almost here" Harry whispered.

"Alright, push again, Louis"

Louis groaned, because he didn't want to push anymore... he couldn't.

"Louis, this is it, last few pushes to meet our baby" Harry said.

"No" Louis whined.

"Come on, you can do this, darling" Helen encouraged him "You're almost there".

Louis closed his eyes and pushed again, but he couldn't help the scream that came straight from his throat as he felt the baby's shoulders coming out.

"A little harder, Louis" the doctor instructed.

He felt like he was going to pass out, but he pushed as hard as he could.

And then his baby came out, and she was lifted, and was placed on his chest while she cried her little lungs out.

Louis couldn't believe it, he couldn't , this was his baby, his child, Harry's child, and she was okay, she was alive, and she was perfect.

He couldn't even speak, all he could do was cry and hold his baby tightly, knowing that he was never going to let anything bad happen to this baby, ever.

"Harry, our baby" Louis managed to say.

"I know, my love" Harry said as he held the baby's little head, and kissed Louis' temple after which he murmured "She's perfect".

"My baby" Louis said as he kept sobbing, and holding his baby to his chest "My baby".

Louis closed his eyes wanting to calm down, and as he felt the warmth of his daughter's body on his chest, while her little cries subsided, he honestly felt like he was in a dream.

How could this be real?

How was it posible that he was this happy?

"I love you so much" Louis whispered to his daughter while he rubbed her little back.

"Dad, are you cutting the cord?" the doctor suddenly spoke.

Louis opened his eyes, and watched as Harry held a pain of scissors and cut the baby's cord, and then he looked to his right, and there was his nan, and she had tears in her eyes as she looked at the little baby in awe. When their eyes met, she smiled at Louis, and he smiled back.

"Nan, I have a baby" Louis said.

"I know, she's gorgeous, love, and I'm so proud of you" Helen told him "This little one is so lucky to be your daughter".

"Thank you" Louis replied as he cried again, and then he looked at Harry "Her name...".

"It suits her" Harry declared.

"Yeah..." Louis nodded as he sniffed a little, and he looked at his nan again "Her name is Morgan".

"Oh, Lou" Helen smiled, and her eyes filled with fresh tears "Thank you, your grandfather would be so happy and proud".

Louis gave her a sad smile, but then he focused on his baby again when a midwife told him she would take her for a few minutes.

"Do you have to?" Louis asked sadly as he looked down at Morgan "I think she wants to stay here".

"It will only be 5 minutes, we just want to make sure she's okay, and she's going to stay in this room" the midwife told him "I promise".

Louis kissed Morgan's head, and then allowed the midwife to take his daughter, and the second she was out of his arms he felt like he was missing part of him.

In the meantime, Louis was asked to push out the placenta, which he did, but he still stayed focused on Morgan, because he wanted her back soon.

It was Harry who brought her back to him, and he looked so cute holding their daughter it made Louis want to cry again.

"She's healthy, 7 pounds 3 oz, 20 inches long and she's got a ton of blonde hair" Harry announced as he transferred her to Louis "If I hadn't seen her come out of you I wouldn't believe she was ours".

"Why? You had blonde hair as a baby, I've seen the pictures" Louis considered, and focused on Morgan's little face.

"She looks a lot like you as a newborn" Helen commented.

"You think so?" Louis smiled.

"Trust me, I was there the day you were born" Helen told him.

Louis grinned, and looked down at his daughter again, who had her eyes barely open, and was wrapped tightly in a blanket and was wearing a baby pink beanie.

"I can't believe she's real" Louis said as he traced her cute little nose "She doesn't seem real".

Louis held Morgan and watched her in silence for at least 20 minutes, it was like he was hypnotized by her, but eventually he let Harry hold her again, and then they gave her to Helen to hold too.

"She's very calm, isn't she?" Helen commented.

"You think so?" Louis asked as a yawn escaped his lip.

"Yes" Harry confirmed.

"What time is it?" Louis wondered.

"Almost 6 am" Harry said looking at his watch "The midwife said she was born at 4:34".

"November 15th?" Louis confirmed.

"Yes" Harry confirmed.

"Nan, I'm sorry I made you stay up all night" Louis apologized.

"I'm not" Helen smiled "I was in the room when your mum gave birth to you, and it was an honor to be in the room when you gave birth to your daughter".

"I love you so much, Nan" Louis told her.

"I love you too, my darling, and little Morgan" Helen smiled and looked at the baby in her arms again "She's wonderful".

Then Louis' nan said she was going to go home to rest, and although Harry offered to drive her home, she insisted on taking a taxi, which she ended up doing.

"I can't stop looking at her" Louis said, Morgan was back in his arms "How is she so perfect?".

"Because she's a Styles" Harry grinned.

Louis chuckled, and Harry kissed his lips once, then a second time, and a third.

"I'm so proud of you, Lou" Harry told him "You are the most amazing person in the world, the way you handled everything, the pregnancy, the labor, the birth... I was in awe of you".

"What are you talking about? I was a mess through it all" Louis chuckled.

"Not in my eyes, baby" Harry smiled, and he kissed Louis again.

"I'm never doing it again, though" Louis said as he looked down at Morgan who was sleeping "I love her so much I would kill for her, but I really want to go back to my old meds and I never want to stop taking them again".

"That's fine by me, baby" Harry replied "I think having 3 girls in the house will be a handful already".

"I agree" Louis replied, and looked at Morgan again "I can't wait for the twins to meet her".

"They're going to love her".
