Chapter 39

Franky carried you into the sunny, the yellow ambience always made the ship seem warm and lively even when it was pitch black outside.

The ship really did carry the will of the straw hats...

You smile a bit at the thought as you glance around, the Sunny's presence filling all your senses at once.

Your home looked just as it always did and it felt the same too.

Your heart felt an instant lightness and calm wrap around it. the familiarity of it all washing through you and pushing back the horrible memories you collected in the short time you were separated.

You close your eyes and and sigh with a smile still lingering on your lips, a feeling of safety enveloping you almost completely.

You bounced your feet like a happy child as you sat on Franky's metallic arm, the happiness somehow energizing your exhausted body.

You all walked into the dining room, the kitchen being right next to it and in your view now.

Where else would Sanji be but in the kitchen right?

Franky let's you down once you near the kitchen, understanding that Sanji would probably want to hug you as a welcome back.

You breathe in slowly, careful to not make the growing pain in your ribs any harsher than it had already been.

Sanji was the last one you needed to see to make this complete.

You enter the kitchen with soft footsteps, anticipation and anxiety filling you as you stepped forward cautiously.

Your eyes scanning the area and landing on a meal?

Your face dropped when you examine the shards of a broken plate mixed in with spaghetti, a few flies hovering over the mess of what it looks to be 3 days old, rotting food.

The tomato sauce was splattered like blood and the meat balls looked more burnt than rotted.

Sanji would never....

You gulp as your eyes drift to a figure, surprised that you didn't notice the shadow cast on the sad state of food sooner.

"San... ji?", you mumble in disbelief when you see the blonde staring down at the food with no expression on his face, his ocean eyes looked completely dead, stripped completely of the whites that made the ocean in his eyes sparkle.

He didn't budge even after you had called out to him, you were at a loss for words at the sight before you.

Sanji? The goofy blonde chef, usually bursting with love and energy was now completely limp and staring down at a dish you were sure he dropped and left to rot.

He hates wasting food.

You take a step toward him as if by reflex but halt when you feel a shiver snake up your spine, the unfamiliarity of the old air around him nipped at your body and heart.

You glance behind you with a panicked look, begging silently for guidance on how exactly to approach this situation. Their mouths were all agaped and their eyes still glued to the mess of speghetti.

You gulp and look back with terrified eyes, almost tip toeing as you advanced toward him. "Sanji?", you tilt your head a bit to get more than just a glimpse of the empty blue in his eyes.

He looked so far gone.

Like nothing would be able to pull him back to where everyone else was no matter what methods were tried.

"Sanji", you try again and reach out to gently tug at the sleeve of his suit, your tone louder and more desperate to hear a response this time.

But nothing.

You were terrified by his vacant eyes, it was as if he had become nothing more than the walking dead.

"Hey. Don't ignore me Sanji.", your hand lifts and wraps around his loosely done tie, pulling him toward you and away from the sad sight of rotting food. Frustrated and worried, tears welling up in the corners of your eyes.

You see yourself in his empty eyes now, holding your breath as you waited for any change in his face, anything that would make you believe that the person infront of you was infact your chef.

It took a second, but his eyes flickered like he had snapped out of whatever trance he was put in, his blue eyes softened and that's when you knew he saw you, you had been standing infront of him for God knows how long but you could tell that he just saw you.

You could tell by the way the whites in his eyes resurfaced and glimmered like they always did when he caught a glimpse of you.

You smile as if by reflex when you notice the subtle light cast over his ocean eyes.

"My darling y/n, is that truly you?", he asks breathlessly, clearly in disbelief from the mere sight of you infront of him.

You nod before you could answer, the tender tone of his voice made it hard to speak in fear of your own voice revealing the emotion stuck at your throat.

"Im sorry for worrying you", you apologize softly with a guilty smile, averting your eyes before it glossed over for the millionth time today.

Your skin jumps a bit when you feel him gently lay his hands on your shoulders, his thumbs caressing your skin with furrowed eyebrows and intense eyes.

"You did more than just worry me, you almost killed me y/n.", he admits frustratedly, shaking his head slightly before he sighs in relief and then chuckles. You simply stare at him, examining and taking in every movement and expression.

"I'm so grateful-"

"That's enough, you need to get checked up y/n."

Luffy's POV

I didn't like it, not even for a second.

The way she pulled him closer to her made me feel like an outsider. The worry in her tone and eyes leaving a bitter taste in my throat.

Her hand still held onto his tie, even after Sanji snapped out of it.

I grit my teeth and watched as sanji's hands held onto her shoulders just like I did before.

I just watched when the blonde started talking in some love sick puppy voice

It pissed me off, because it sounded more love sick than the usual voice he used when he talked to Nami and Robin.

Stop it.

How come he was allowed to say everything he wants to say to her?

I could barely hold it together when I saw her again.

That tingling ache in my chest burned this time around. It made my mouth dry, it was uncomfortable and so very annoying.

I bite my tongue and look away, my hands balled into a fist without even realizing it

I turn away because the way he looked at her made everything inside me turn.

Most of all, I looked away because I couldn't handle how she didn't look away.

Y/n's POV

"That's enough, you need to get checked up y/n."

It was Nami.

Her honey brown eyes were stern when you turned your head to look at her, Chopper immediately nodding and tugging at the crimson splattered shirt you wore.

Sanji nods slowly and let's go of your shoulders with a soft smile.

You smile back in response before you let chopper pull you away.

Everyone follows after you, everyone but Luffy.

You look back and see his feet planted to where he stood, with no intention of moving. his black eyes were tired and his expression was blank as he looked toward the ground.

Its been a while since you've seen him like this.

You should've been grateful that you were even able to see any expression on his face again but, his limp facial muscles always made him feel unfamiliarly cold.

You bite down on the inside of your cheek as you neared the door, becoming more and more fidgety as the urge to have him next to you consumed you rapidly.

Your hand clasping onto the doorframe before you completely exited the room and he was out of sight.

"Luffy, you're not coming?", you call out and ask in a lighthearted tone, contrasting to the desperate need to be close to him that was banging at your chest.

Luffy's eyes were as dark as ever even after they turned to you, it made you flinch, your fingernails digging into the doorframe as you stare into his icy, dazed eyes.

"I'll wait here for you."

If he had said it with any other expression, you probably would've smiled in response but the cold and straight tone of voice mixed with his blank expression froze your heart over and made it so unbelievably fragile.

Luffy...?

Your eyes flicker to his balled up fist, his knuckles white from the pressure he put into keeping it closed.

You simply nod and look forward quickly, breathing in sharply and wincing from the pain.

Only, you weren't sure if the pains origin was your ribs or if it came from the fresh ache in your chest.

<>

You were so out of it after that interaction that you were infront of the check up room when you snapped back to reality.

"Alright. This is as far as we go, Let's leave Doctor Chopper to do his work.", Nami holds her hands out to block the entrance from the rest of the crew, all of them grumbling in response which earned them each a knock to the head, everyone but Robin that is.

"I'M ALSO INJURED THOUGH", Ussop whines loudly and points to his battered and bruised face, nami rolling her eyes in response.

"Tsk, you can wait."

You smile at the harmless banter between the two but the remnants of ice still weighed down on your heart mercilessly.

You just didn't get it..

A hand is placed on your head.

You look up to see Nami smiling down at you reassuringly like she always did, somehow always managing to sense your anxiety and handing you some comfort.

"C'mon then Y/n", Chopper ushered you inside, but your eyes still searching aimlessly for him.

Begging with everything inside you that he wasn't being serious, pleading that he cared enough to be here regardless of what he said.

But... you saw nothing of him before Chopper shut the door.
