Memory Two

Br

This is another memory oneshot

--

"Nightmare- wake up, wake up, wake up!" Dream chanted, gently shaking his sleeping brother who sat atop the window sill. He was leaned against the glass pane snoring softly- he must've fallen asleep while admiring the night sky. Dream stayed quiet for a few seconds as he waited for a response before huffing and shaking him again with a little more force.

"Night!" He whined, beginning to poke his brother's cheekbone.

Nightmare stirred and let out a low groan, slightly opening his eyes and glaring tiredly at his loud brother.

"Day." He replied, somewhat dazed. The guardian of negativity blinked a few times and shifted until he was sat up properly on the window sill. He rubbed his eye-sockets to clear away the haziness and peered down at Dream with slight irritation. It was too early for this, he decided, despite having no idea what time of day it was.

"Good morning!" Dream greeted, placing his hands on his hips and grinning toothily.

Nightmare's eye twitched.

"What time is it?" He grumbled, lifting his hand up to cover his mouth as he let out a long yawn.

Dream gave a sideways glance to the moon-like clock that hung on Nightmare's wall.

"Half past five-"

Nightmare groaned loudly, slumping against the window and folding his arms.

"Too early." He muttered, closing his eyes.

Dream folded his arms and squinted at the other guardian.

"I let you sleep in for an extra thirty minutes." He stated.

"Well let me sleep in for an extra day." Nightmare half-whispered, already drifting away again.

Dream frowned and unfolded his arms. Now that he was actually looking at him, Nightmare really did seem exhausted. He felt a pang of guilt for disturbing him and came to the decision that he'll let Nightmare sleep for as long as he needs. His worried gaze lingered on the other guardian for a moment before he turned away and exited the room as quietly as he could.

Dream barely made it down the stairs before he heard shuffling and incoherent mumbling. He blinked, glimpsing over his shoulder and spotting Nightmare padding down the stairs after him. A small smile crossed Dream's face as he hopped of the last stair and turned around to face his brother.

"Aren't you still sleepy?" He asked, raising a non-existent eyebrow.

Nightmare simply stared at the other, remaining silent. It's not that he didn't want to sleep some more, he just wanted to spend some time with his brother. He wouldn't admit that out loud, though. Not that he had to- Dream already knew. He gave Nightmare a lopsided grin and turned away, treading towards the kitchen. Nightmare trailed after him, eyeing the golden-yellow cape his brother wore. A small smile etched it's way onto his face as he recalled the memory of when they'd made it. Dream wandered into the kitchen and hopped onto the table, swinging his legs back and forth.

"I'm hungry." He sighed dramatically.

Nightmare rolled his eyes, approaching the bowl of fruit they kept and grabbing an apple. Dream beamed and reached out lazily for it. His smile turned into a playful scowl as he watched Nightmare bite into the apple and begin eating it.

"Brother, you are so mean." He mumbled, shuffling off the table and grabbing an apple for himself.

Nightmare simply smiled. Dream chuckled, pleased to see him happy. The two ate their apples in a comfortable silence. Nightmare seemed to be a lot less irritable lately- they haven't argued in a while and yesterday they went on a nice walk together- they hadn't been on a walk together in ages! Dream smiled fondly as he thought back to yesterday. Even if the walk had been cut short thanks to an angry duck, it had still been fun. His eyes widened as he remembered how they'd talked about making a cape similar to Dream's so Nightmare could have one too. How could he forget something so important?

"Nightmare!" Dream exclaimed, startling the other guardian.

"What?" Nightmare stammered, almost dropping the rest of his apple.

"We forgot to make you a cape yesterday!" Dream cried out. "We must make you one today."

Nightmare relaxed, relieved that it wasn't something serious. He ate the last of his apple before tossing it into the trash can and folding his arms.

"Why'd you make it seem like it was something serious?" He mumbled.

Dream huffed, placing his hands on his hips.

"This is serious!" He argued. "Well- to me at least."

A light, lilac hue dusted Nightmare's cheekbones at the response. He scoffed, glancing sideways. Dream didn't mean that- why would he? He's a rotten brother to Dream. At least, that's what he tells himself.

After coming to the conclusion that Nightmare wasn't going to reply, Dream smiled and began to walk towards the doorway that led to the living room.

"I'm going to go see if we have any purple silk or fabric or whatever- wait here!" He ordered.

Nightmare nodded slightly, heaving himself up onto the counter-top and absentmindedly beginning to fidget with his sleeves. Dream sighed softly, stepping out of the kitchen and wandering off. He trudged up the stairs while humming a pleasant tune and sauntered over towards his room, swinging the door open.

"I'm pretty sure I have some purple stuff from when Ink visited and went on an artistic rampage." He said to himself, deciding not to think too hard about that zany experience.

Ink was weird.

Shaking his head, Dream stepped over towards his bed and got down onto his knees so that he could open the drawers beneath his bed. He fumbled around for a few minutes, moving aside old toys and brightly colored cloth before retrieving a soft, lilac fabric and a small patch of purple fabric.

"These should be good." He mumbled, shoving the cluttered drawers closed and scrambling back up onto his feet with the fabrics firmly in hand. The guardian scurried out of his bedroom, not bothering to shut the door behind him, and rushed down the stairs as if his life depended on it.

"Nightmare I have obtained purple cloth!" He exclaimed, skidding through the door and tossing the fabric onto the dining table.

Nightmare jumped and let out a small squeak of surprise. His face flushed a furious purple and he proceeded to cover his face with his hands from embarrassment. Dream snorted in amusement, unfastening his cape so that he could use it as a reference for Nightmare's cape.

"Stop hiding- we have to make you a cape!"

"I cannot show my face ever again."

Dream rolled his eyes playfully- seems like he's not the only dramatic one. He turned his attention back to the task at hand and neatly laid out his yellow cape on the table. This shouldn't be too hard to replicate- the lilac fabric just needs cutting down to the right size and the purple fabric needs to be turned into a crescent moon or a star.

"Do you want a moon or a star on your cape?" Dream asked while he smoothed out the lilac fabric beside his cape. "Or both?" He added.

Nightmare slightly uncovered his face so that he could peer at his brother.

"Uh- moon." He answered, finally lowering his hands and revealing his somewhat less flustered face.

Dream hummed in acknowledgement, grabbing the square of purple fabric and laying it out flat on top of the sun pattern on his cape. The material was faintly transparent so Dream could easily draw out a crescent moon the same size as the sun.

"Come here- you need to help." He huffed, gesturing for Nightmare to come over to him.

Nightmare muttered something under his breath, heaving himself up off the counter-top and wandering over towards the other guardian. He stood beside his brother and glanced down at the purple fabric, watching Dream carefully draw out the shape of a crescent moon. Nightmare was amazed by how simple his brother made it look- there's no way he'd be able to draw that without making a mistake.

"Okay- now you can cut it out!" Dream declared, tossing the pen he'd used to draw the moon behind him onto the kitchen floor.

Nightmare followed the pen with his eyes, inwardly sighing. He should teach Dream to be more tidy. He blinked as a pair of scissors were practically shoved into his face.

"Snipping time." Dream chuckled. "Snip, snip." He added, opening and closing the scissors repeatedly.

Nightmare let out a breath of laughter, plucking the scissors out of Dream's hands and flicking his forehead with his other hand. Dream huffed, batting his brother's hand away and grumbling something unintelligible.

"Snip!" Dream exclaimed.

"Okay!"

Nightmare turned around and pulled the purple fabric closer to him before beginning to cautiously cut around the outline. Dream observed him for a few seconds. He seemed to be doing alright. The guardian of positivity grinned, switching his attention back to the lilac fabric that needed trimming. He probably shouldn't have thrown the pen, he realizes. Oh well.

Dream grabbed another pair of conveniently placed scissors and proceeded to cut the material as straight as he could. As long as he believes in himself, he can do this. He didn't even realize he had been holding his breath until he made the last cut and took a step back to admire his work.

It wasn't very straight- there was a slight curve much to his disappointment.

"I messed it up." He whined, dropping the scissors onto the table and sulking.

Nightmare hummed, glimpsing over at the crudely cut fabric.

"I think it's alright." He said softly, a small smile on his face.

Dream perked up and beamed brightly, hugging his brother without warning. Nightmare stammered, being careful not to catch Dream with the scissors he held.

"You're the best brother ever." Dream stated with starry eyes, grinning toothily as he released Nightmare from the sudden embrace.

Nightmare rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and returned the grin.

"If you say so." He answered, glancing sideways.

"I do!" Dream chimed.

Nightmare chuckled, patting Dream affectionately on the head before holding out the purple crescent moon he'd cut out.

"I finished, by the way."

Dream cheered, taking the moon from his brother and laying it out on the lilac fabric in the center.

"This is going to look amazing- we just need to sew it onto the cape!" Dream proclaimed.

Nightmare nodded in agreement.

"I'll get a needle and some thread." He offered, turning around and stepping over towards one of the kitchen drawers that contained miscellaneous items. He fumbled around for a few seconds until he eventually found a small box of needles and some black thread. He opened the plastic case and carefully plucked out a needle, placing it on the counter with the thread.

"Be careful with the needles." Dream warned, knowing how clumsy his brother could be at times.

Nightmare hummed, closing the box and placing it back into the drawer. He scooped up the thread and needle, wandering back over towards Dream and placing the things on the table. Dream moved aside, allowing Nightmare to pull out a chair and sit down at the table so he could sew the moon onto the cape.

"How long will it take?" Dream asked, watching as his brother threaded the string through the needle and tied a knot to secure it.

"I don't know." Nightmare huffed, waving Dream away. "Why don't you go play outside or watch TV while I do this?"

Dream shook his head, pulling out the chair beside Nightmare and taking a seat.

"I will keep you company." He declared, folding his arms on the table and resting his head on them while facing his brother.

Nightmare resisted the urge to grin, instead focusing on sewing the crescent moon onto the lilac fabric.

It took some time, but eventually Nightmare finished and the cape was completed. Sure, it didn't look as cool as Dream's did but Nightmare still loved it.

"Put it on, put it on!" Dream urged giddily. "Oh wait- I need to get something first."

Nightmare chuckled, watching his brother zoom off. He's pretty sure Dream's more excited about the cape than he is. The guardian of positivity soon returned with a badge identical to the pink star one he wore to keep his cape secure.

"Stay still- I want to do it." Dream instructed.

Nightmare nodded, handing the lilac cape over to his brother. Dream took it from him and wrapped it around his brother's neck, making sure it was loose enough before attaching the star badge to pin the cape into place. He grinned toothily, taking a step back and nodding in approval.

"It looks so good!" Dream praised, circling Nightmare so that he could get a good look of the entirety of the cape.

Nightmare smiled, his lilac eyes softly glowing.

He kept the cape on for the rest of the day and for the first time in a while Dream could see his brother was genuinely happy. This really was a great day that he's certain they'd both remember and cherish.

--

Nightmare faltered, reaching out for the cape Dream had thrust in his face. Dream held his breath and stayed completely still, eyeing his brother with apprehension. His eyes widened as a stray, cyan tear built up in Nightmare's malformed eye and mixed in with the black gunk.

--End--
