xiii.

teddy and mason stood with liam as he prepared for the game.
"you ready, li?β€”"
teddy's face fell into a frown as she noticed her friend was preoccupied.
teddy followed the blue eyed boy's gaze over over to the opposing team where brett talbot was removing his shirt.
she heard a couple of wolf whistles (pun intended) directed towards brett, but teddy wasn't fussed by it.
he was hot, teddy couldn't deny that.
but, brett was also bigheaded and cruel.
he didn't need people boosting his ego even more.
besides, teddy wasn't going to flirt with one boy whilst she liked another.
she wasn't that kind of girl.
"i don't care if he's a foot taller than me."
liam's voice came from beside her as he turned back to face his two best friends.
"i think i can take him."
mason scoffed, but liam's face was deadly serious.
"yeah.."
he said uncertainly, but mason wasn't looking at liam.
or listening, teddy thought, else he wouldn't have agreed.
it wasn't that she didn't believe in liam.
she did.
but, this guy was six foot three and strongly build.
liam was, well, liam.
both liam and teddy followed mason's gaze to find it still on shirtless brett.
teddy stifled a chuckle, but liam scowled.
"what do you think you're doing?"
liam turned to face mason, who was still lost to the presence of his friends.
teddy snapped her fingers under mason's nose, and he seemed to wake up.
"what? me?"
liam's eyes widened and he bit his lip, motioning for mason to answer.
teddy was thankful for the darkness, as it hid the large smile covering her face.
mason scoffed before nodding enthusiastically.
"agreeing with you."
teddy let out a snort she could not contain, earning funny looks from both boys.
mason continued.
"i'm being agreeable."
liam smiled a little, turning his eyes to brett for a second, before turning them back to mason.
he shook his head, seeming almost disappointed.
"you think he's hot, don't you?"
"no! not at all! no way!"
mason said, raising his eyebrows, but he sounded uncertain.
mason's tone of voice changed as he went on.
"maybe. yeah, maybe a little."
teddy laughed again.
"well.."
mason looked around in a panic.
"uhβ€” teddy does, too!"
liam's face fell, but it quickly turned into one of annoyance.
he raised an eyebrow at teddy.
"you do?"
"nah."
teddy shook her head.
"he has too much of a big bead for me."
"oh, yeah?"
liam challenged, but he couldn't hide the relief in his voice.
teddy nodded with finality.
"yeah. don't worry, li."
mason smirked and winked at the girl beside him.
"teddy has her eyes on someone else."
teddy stuck her tongue out at mason as he pointed towards the boy with his back turned, making big, comical arrows with his hands.
she wasn't going to deny it, though.
there was no point.
because teddy did like liam dunbar.
and mason hewitt knew.
"he wants to destroy me."
liam said, referring to brett, whilst being completely oblivious to everything that occurred between his two friends.
"i think you could definitely take him."
mason nodded confidentially, and teddy rolled her eyes, but didn't say anything.
because she knew liam dunbar was tougher than he looked.
liam looked over at brett as mason continued.
"and then give him to me."
liam scoffed before laughing, a smile breaking out on his, in teddy's opinion, adorable face.
"no, no."
mason said, looking at his best friend.
"just go out there and kick their smug prep school asses, man."
"alright."
liam smiled.
the two 'bro-fisted' and liam turned to teddy.
"good luck, li."
she smiled at the boy before giving him a hug.
liam's heart fluttered at the contact, and so did teddy's.
liam hugged back, and inhaled the soft fragrance of teddy's hair.
when the two pulled away, their smiled were covering almost half of their faces.
"go kick some ass, li."
"will do, ted. for you."
and with that, liam dunbar ran to the field, following the sound of a whistle.
><
teddy turned around, surveying the scene of the lacrosse pitch.
a sense of dread settled in teddy's stomach as she remembered what happened last time she had sat in these bleachers, witnessing the teams' play.
whilst looking around, teddy spotted scott talking to coach.
she threw a slight smile in her brother's direction, but he didn't notice; scott was too engrossed in his conversation with coach.
to teddy, the pair appeared to be arguing, but, over the roar of the crowds in the bleachers and the sounding of whistles, teddy only caught one word of what the pair were saying.
liam.
"teddy?"
mason snapped his fingers under the girl's nose.
"teddy!"
teddy jolted back away from mason's hand, almost tipping off the back of her seat before coming to her senses.
"uhhβ€” yeah, mase?"
she asked, playing off her daydream, so as to speak.
mason chuckled a little.
"thinking about liam?"
teddy blushed vigorously despite the statement not being true.
a smirk appeared on the dark-skinned boy's face.
"you like him."
teddy's blush deepened as she shrugged.
"maybe.."
her voice came out meek, in an attempt not to attract unwanted attention.
"don't deny it, ted."
mason pointed out liam beginning to warm up on the field.
"i mean.. he's hot."
mason blushed, realising what he had said.
"not that i would date him.. no.. he's my best friendβ€” and he's straight.."
teddy laughed, ignoring her embarrassment for a moment, and rejoicing in her friend's own.
"you had a crush on him, didn't you?"
teddy wiggled her eyebrows as mason sighed.
"yeah.. okay, i did. but, now, i'm totally cool with us being friends. and maybe, i might even have a chance with brett!"
teddy laughed softly.
"aww, mase. you're actually the cutest."
mason's cheeks turned pink at the compliment.
quickly, though, the boy recovered his wits.
"cuter than liam?"
teddy felt her cheeks burn, but still, she answered.
"yeah. liam's hot."
mason laughed out loud, earning a couple of stares which teddy tried to avoid.
mason spoke after a minute, and then the game began.
"don't worry, he likes you too."
><
beacon hills lacrosse team was losing.
badly.
even though devenford had only scored one, to the nil that the home team had, teddy had to admit, they sucked.
after the goal was scored, scott, stiles and kira herded in the centre of the pitch to exchange words.
teddy didn't catch any of what they said, but she watched as kira stuck by garrett, and scott by liam.
just the sight of liam made teddy's heart pound, after she'd told mason about her crushβ€” well, he guessed.
but she would never admit that.
sure, teddy had had her fair share of crushes over the years.
a boy in middle school with dark hair and green eyes.
a boy she met when on holiday in new york, with brown curly hair and hazel eyes.
even, at one point, teddy had even had a crush on her brothers friend, isaac lahey.
but it wasn't like this.
for starters, none of them had liked teddy back.
teddy watched as garrett walked past liam, her breath hitched in her throat, worry taking over.
but garrett walked on, and, it appeared, that liam was fine.
for now.
mason looked over at teddy and touched her hand resting on the bleachers lightly.
"teddy?"
teddy's head snapped round to face her friend.
"uhβ€” yeah.."
mason smiled kindly.
"you worried about liam?"
teddy's eyes widened.
did the boy know?
"β€”because you shouldn't. brett won't do anything that could risk him getting kicked off the team."
mason continued, and teddy let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in.
"yeah."
she said slowly.
"brett won't do anything."
but right then, teddy had bigger worries that a little lacrosse dispute.
the game started up again with devenford taking the ball, number eleven, mccall, chasing close behind the player.
suddenly, liam began to sprint after green number twenty-eightβ€” brett, teddy soon realisedβ€”, and her heart began to race.
there was no way liam could take brett without wolfing out.
two boys tackled liam, but, as the crowd soon realised, they were both wearing matching jerseys.
a gasp erupted from the students and parents gathered on the bleachers as scott and stiles took down liam.
of course, brett carried on, and scored, with over half the fans cheering him on.
brett looked back at his former teammate sprawled out on the floor and smirked, but liam had other ideas.
"liam!"
scott yelled as the blonde boy ripped off his helmet and gloves and charged towards the opposition.
teddy and mason shared a worried glance before sprinting onto the pitch to stop their friend.
scott and stiles caught the raging boy as teddyΒ  and mason arrived.
"mccall! hewitt! get off the pitch!"
coach yelled, but when scott stepped forwards with an eyebrow raised, he began to fumble.
"not you, mccall. other mccall. the mccall with brown hair!"
scott took off his helmet.
"god damn it!"
"liam!"
teddy said, ignoring coach's yells, but raising her voice a little.
"what's gotten into you? i've never seen you like this!"
mason shot the girl a confused glance.
"he hasn't told you?"
"told me what?"
teddy asked before turning her attention back to liam.
slowly, liam began to calm down in teddy's presence.
he stood up, still glaring at brett, and pulled his helmet and gloves back on.
mason and teddy returned to the bleachers.
when they sat down, teddy turned to her friend.
"told me what?"
she repeated.
mason didn't look at her.
he kept his eyes trained on the game taking place.
"after the game."
he said, and teddy sighed, but didn't push.
she could wait.
considering everyone lived that long.
><
the game continued around her, but teddy kept her eyes trained on scott, kira, liam, and garrett.
the other night, scott had explained the dead pool properly to teddy.
she wasn't going to lieβ€”teddy was terrified.
but atleast this once, she was more involved than usual.
the crowd erupted in cheers as kira scored a goal.
"yukimura!"
she heard coach scream, but teddy wasn't paying attention.
her eyes were fixed on the supernaturals still on the field.
and garrett.
majority of the game was uneventful, that was, until liam and brett collided in a flying tackle.
everyone heard the crunch of bones as the pair made contact with the ground below.
liam screamed, and teddy felt tears threaten to form for the boy.
but, brett appeared to be in more pain.
he lay on the floor, unmoving and wincing.
teddy and mason both stood up to get a better look, not daring to run on to the field for a second time that night.
"back off!"
coach yelled, using his arms to clear the area around the injured boy.
in truth, teddy's concern wasn't directed at brett, but at liam instead.
not for his injury, but for the consequences of what he'd just done.
liam was suddenly hauled up by the familiar pair of juniors as people began to leave brett's side.
teddy mccall didn't hear the words exchanged by the alpha and the beta, but she knew something was wrong.
teddy watched as scott grabbed liam's arm and pushed, ignoring the cries and groans coming from number twenty-eight.
as brett limped away, teddy noticed as silver glint, and a metallic ching as the blade from the end of garrett's stick retracted.
scott noticed, too.
and that's why teddy mccall went barrelling into the school after the injured player, leaving mason in a flurry of confusion.
because she realised what scott, stiles and liam didn't.
garrett didn't miss.
><
scott mccall was beginning to panic.
his sister was no where in sight, him only knowing what mason had told him; she had sprinted off the bleachers hurriedly, and without explanation.
he was slightly reassured to know that liam was out of the game, but he felt bad for the boy, knowing how much he wanted to play.
stiles appeared by scott's side, worsening his stress levels with the look on his face.
"guys."
his best friend dropped his phone from in front of his face.
"lydia just broke another third of the list."
liam's face looked panic, and the guilt washed over scott as though it were fresh.
"am i on it?"
the blonde boy asked.
"no."
stiles said, and the freshman's face seemed to relax.
"but someone else is."
stiles paused.
"who?"
liam pestered, hating the tension.
"brett."
stiles lowered his voice to a whisper.
"and teddy."
