Arrested in Wonderland

Β "Put your hands where I can see them." Jake Riley ordered me, pointing his "weapon" at me.

I should probably mention that his "weapon" was a foot-long Subway sandwich that he had filched from the cafeteria. I should also probably mention that none of this was my fault. At least, not intentionally. Once my sister, Katie, and I had been quarantined, Jake and I had never got along. Somehow, he had the ability to get under my skin and he did it frequently. And now, just because I may have hacked Doctor Cannert's computer to watch YouTube videos, Jake was angry at me.

"Okay, you can't arrest me, Officer Grumpy!" I smirked at him, my hands on my hips.

"Actually I can because I'm still a cop and you still broke the law," he said to me, an authoritative tone in his voice.

"Oh? And where exactly are you going to lock me up then?" I said defiantly, fire in my brown eyes.

"I guess we'll find out, won't we?" he smirked back, pulling me hard by the arm.

I winced in pain at his vice-like grip as he propelled me through the hallways until we stopped at the old storage room, Katie and I had been using to keep the elementary kids in. Jake let go of my arm and pushed me into the room.

"Stay!" he ordered, pointing at me with his sandwich.

I rolled my eyes at his attempt to be menacing and plopped down on one of the chairs by the window. As Jake walked out of the room, I watched him go. His tight, black t-shirt hugged his frame, his muscles rippling beneath it. If he looked that good with his shirt on, I couldn't help but imagine how he looked without it. I shook my head, trying to rid myself of these thoughts. I hated Jake...didn't I?

I leaned over and picked up one of the books that lay on the table beside my chair.

Alice in Wonderland.

I smiled to myself as my fingers traced the cursive lettering on the red cover.

"Bit old for that book, aren't you?" a voice asked me and I jumped in surprise.

When I looked up to see who it was, I scowled. Jake was back.

"Whoa, whoa! Don't get hostile!" he said as he walked over and picked up his jacket off of one of the chairs," I just came to get this."

I bit my lip as he began to walk back out again.

"Wait! You don't have to leave...you can stay in here if you want." I offered, looking up at him.

Why did I say that?!

He smiled and nodded, coming back into the room.

"If you insist." he smirked, sitting down across from me.

A moment of silence ensued between us then, Jake looking down at his hands and me reading my book.

"The Mad Hatter," he mumbled suddenly, making me look up to meet his deep blue eyes.

"What?" I asked, a hint of a smile on my lips.

"The Mad Hatter was always my favorite as a kid. Growing up, my mom used to read it to me," he said, gesturing to the book in my hands, an uncharacteristically shy smile on his face.

I smiled over at him then.

"Alice was always my favorite." I said, grinning as I closed the book.

He grinned back at me and butterflies erupted in my stomach. Gosh, he was beautiful. He got up from his chair abruptly and knelt down in front of me. He caught me off-guard then and did something I never expected. He kissed me. Jake Riley, my enemy since day one, kissed me.

I tensed at first but soon, I melted into the kiss, his soft lips making me tingle all over. After a few more seconds, we both broke away, panting and smiling.

"I guess this means you're my Mad Hatter now," I grinned at him mischievously.

He nodded to me, smiling slyly.

"That makes you my Alice." he said, playfully.

"I guess I was arrested in Wonderland then." I laughed as he pulled me in for another kiss.
