29. Smarter

"...smarter than you think..."

Peter's next class was chemistry, his favorite class for several reasons. First of all, he had this class with his best friend.

"Hey Ned!" Peter greeted, sliding into his seat. Ned grinned at him. "You actually made it! I didn't think you were going to stay true to your promise!"

"We'll see what happens at lunch." Peter joked, but he still was not going to miss the last day of school. He was so close. After school him and Aunt May were going to have a family dinner before she left on Saturday. Then on Sunday, he was going to the compound.

He was majorly excited.

Peter actually managed to pay attention in class, his phone remaining blisfully silent as the teacher went over some of the final things to note before summer break. Peter had homework from this class and all his others since he missed so many days, but he would probably have time to work on those at the compound. Peter stood to leave, when suddenly his spidey sense went off loudly. Loud enough that he dropped back into his chair just as a spitball whizzed above him where his head had been.

Peter spun around to see Flash quickly stash a paper straw in his bag, but merely rolled his eyes. So not worth it.

oOo

He had been watching the boy with interest. It had not been wrong, but it never was. And so he now had the task to protect him, along with the rest of New York and the universe. Not hard at all.

oOo

At lunch, Peter sat with Ned, and MJ not far from them. She took a bite of her sandwich and squinted at Peter. "You're actually here today." She scoffed, and Peter smirked. "I only missed, like, three weeks and you all act as if I missed the entire year." MJ shrugged and Ned shoved him, laughing.

Peter had missed the easy interactions between him and his friends. Of course, it was interrupted by his phone buzzing. Are you serious? He pulled it out, to find it was Happy. That was even more surprising than the Avengers!

Happy: "Where do you go to school again?"

"Uh... Midtown High?"

Happy: "And what time do you get out?"

"2: 55... why?"

Peter waited but got no response. Now that was typical. He put his phone back in his pocket and turned back to his lunch.

"I'm going to the library." MJ announced when she finished her food, standing and collecting her stack of books. "Hold up, I have some trigonometry, I'll join you." Ned called, turning to Peter. "Wanna come?"

"Totally. I'll grab some homework from my locker and meet you there." Peter said around a moutful of May's macaroni. Ned sent him a thumbs up and dashed out. Peter slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked to his locker. He paused when he passed a hallway, however, and saw some familiar faces.

You have got to be kidding me. He backstepped and turned down the hallway where he had seen none other than Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton wandering to the office. He ran down the hall, turning to see the two just about to walk into the main office.

"Guys?!" Peter hissed, and both turned to the spiderling in surprise. "Peter, there you are!" Clint spoke, walking up to him. "We wanted to check out your school." And now Happy's text made sense. Peter smiled lightly and subtly steered them away from the office. "That's... great." The Avengers, earth mighteist protectors, were beginning to act like mother hens, hovering around Peter to the point of smothering him.

"Better tell Tony we found him." Nat said, pulling up the communicator on her watch. "Wait... you're joking. Mr. Stark's here too?!" Peter hissed, and Clint shrugged. "Tony, Steve, Sam, Scott, Wanda, Vision, Bucky... we couldn't exactly leave anyone behind." Peter suddenly felt faint.

"Why are you guys even here?" He hissed. "We wanted to make sure you were still in class, for one." Nat explained, and Peter rolled his eyes. "And Happy told us that you sometimes have problems with bullies at school." Clint spat, and Peter facepalmed. One time; one. Time he cam out of school with a split lip only to find Happy waiting to drive him to the compound. The whole drive Happy grilled him why he had a split lip, until Peter caved. Of course, the tiny cut had healed by the time they made it to the compound, but Happy still wouldn't let it go.

"Look, guys, thanks and all, but I have to meet my friends in the library." Peter told the two assassins. "Oh great, I would love to meet your friends!" Scott announced, coming up behind Peter. He groaned. "No, you can't meet my friends! How am I supposed to explain to MJ how I know the Avengers?!"

"Whose MJ?" Sam asked, leaning on Scott's shoulder with a suggestve eyebrow raise. "A friend who does not know I'm Spiderman!" Peter hissed. Finally, he groaned. "Look, you guys can meet Ned, I'll text him." Peter decided. "I've met Ned." Tony announced, him, Steve and Bucky coming to join the fray surrounding Peter.

"Really? I'm surprised he lived through that." Peter chuckled, texting Ned.

"Meet me in the hallway by my locker."

Ned: "Sure. MJ?"

"No MJ."

Ned: "On my way."

Peter stashed his phone again and launched forward to stop Clint from scratching his name in the lockers with an arrow tip. "You can't deface my school!" Peter told him, batting the arrow away. "Which locker is yours?" Sam asked, already halfway down the hallway. Having a bunch of over-protective Avengers around was more like having a bunch of two years olds.

"This one." Peter patted his, looking up in time to see Flash and his buddies round the corner. Well, crap.

"Puny Parker?" Flash exclaimed, and all the Avengers heads snapped up at the name. Peter facepalmed. "Excuse me, what did you just call him?" Steve asked, pushing off the lockers and standing to his full height.

"Steve, its fine!" Peter said quickly, running forwards to stop Bucky from caving Flash's face in. Natasha stalked up to the group and narrowed her eyes at them. "Do not call him that. Ever. Again." She hissed, turning and walking to Peter to put and arm around his shoudlers.

Earth, kindly open up and swallow me whole. Peter thought, only for Tony and Clint to get into the argument as well. "What's your name?" Clint asked angrily. "Better yet, your parents names and phone numbers." Tony added, whipping out his phone. "Noooo!" Peter groaned, Scott coming up and joing Natasha in forming a wall around Peter.

This was getting out of hand.

"Guys, guys, its fine. Flash, I'll talk to you later." He said, shooting Flash a look saying 'run while you still can'. He didn't need to be told twice.

"Are those the little punks that have been bullying you?" Sam asked, and the Avengers turned to Peter with questioning looks. "Uh... yeah, yes, but it doesn't matter!" He waved his hands quickly as Bucky let out a low growl. "I'm going to pound them flat." He grumbled. "Uh, how about we don't do that?"

"Peter?" Ned broke the tension, thank goodness, nearly dropping his backpack at the sight. "Ned, hey! Ned, the Avengers. Avengers, this is Ned."

And then Ned fell over.

Peter facepalmed; his day had quickly decended into absolute chaos.

Well that was... chaotic. Awesome, but chaotic. That is the kind of thing Peter will be having to deal with more and more: overprotective, unruly Avengers. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

Last day of school and then Peter goes to the compound full time!

But, guess what the next chapter is...
