Smoke and Glass

Parker's POV

"I am never working here again"

I hastily wiped the stained blood on the floor, feeling the smallest relief as I saw the color fade away from the marble tiles

I sighed heavily, wiping the sweat off my skin before throwing the dirty tissues in the bin. The door creaked as I looked, seeing Charles' tall figure in the doorway.

He eyed the room first before noticing me in the far corner of the room. I raised a brow at him, expecting him to ask me something as he looked at me with furrowed brows.

"Where's Abby?"

Ah, men really are curious.

I shrugged, looking down on the floor to see that I've missed a small spot. I groaned and grabbed a handful of tissues before crouching down and rubbing furiously on the spot.

Again, he repeated the question, which caused my irritation to occur. "I don't know Charles, she took off to look for Dave"

"She hasn't come back yet? It's been an hour Parker, haven't you even thought of looking for her?"

I gripped the tissues hard and stood up, meeting him in the eye. "She's a woman who can handle herself, don't be fucking over protective and clean your own shit on the floor" I shoved the tissue in his chest, not bothered if he even caught them. I stormed away and slammed the door behind me in frustration.

Now where was Abby?

I searched all around the building, checking all the halls if she was there, even asking a few of my co workers if they've seen her around, but to my dismay, they haven't.

I passed by the front entrance, spotting the security guarding the entry way that lead outside. Had she gone outside? Hopefully not because I'm hungry and I wanted to take her out for some doughnuts.

I walked up to security and tapped the guards shoulder, gulping slowly as his tall figure turned to face me.

"What do you want?"

I nibbled on my bottom lip, hesitating if I should ask. "Has Mr. Sanchez headed outside? I was supposed to have a small chat with him about the increased sales, you haven't seen him, have you?"

He raised a hairy brow at me, suddenly it felt like he wasn't buying my reason. I had to ask where Dave was, wherever he is Abby must have followed him.

His face suddenly relaxed, and I tried not to sigh in relief. "Yeah, he passed by me about an hour ago, stormed to his car and drove away. Then after a few moments, this man came by and asked me where his son went"

My breathing stopped, suddenly feeling dread and fear pulling at my heart.

"What?"

"He passed by me and drove to his- "

"No! I meant who asked for him?"

"Why do you want to kno- "

"Just fucking tell me already!"

The lobby went silent, and I felt everyone's eyes on us. The guard looked around nervously before swallowing his curiosity and answering me dead straight in the eye, suddenly I felt even more afraid.

"Fredrick Sanchez asked for him, is that a problem to you?"

I tugged on the ends of my hair, dread creeping up to my thoughts. I thought this was over and done three years ago?

I had to find Abby, what happened in the past wasn't going to repeat itself when I'm around. The last time I wasn't there for her, now I'm here to make sure that I'd be here.

She needed help last time, and I was stupid enough not to be there for her.

I walked up to my car and shoved the keys into the ignition, bringing the car to life. I drove out of the parking lot, clicking on the headlights since night time had already seeped into the sky.

I drove to the highway, checking my speed limit every once and awhile. It was growing dark now, so I had to squint my eyes on the road, trying to drive safely as not to cause an accident.

Lights of other cars drove past me, I tried to find Dave's car since he had been outside from what the guard told me.

I took out my phone and dialed Charles' number, waiting for a few rings before he finally answered.

"Hello?"

"Charles, I can't find Abby, but I'm fucking scared that something might have happened"

I heard shuffling from the other line before Charles cursed. "Shit, where are you now? I'm coming"

"I'm out here in the highway, the one outside the building"

Suddenly, as I observed the road, few cars had taken this way as the post lights were dimly lit. I heard Charles' voice from the other line became meaningless mumbles.

That's when I saw it, the black car that took a sharp turn to the left.

I heard it first, the screeching of tires before glass broke and shattered. I parked my car on the sideroad and immediately called emergency hotline.

"Hello, there's been an accident in the highway near Sanchez Corporation. Please hurry, I'm afraid someone might be badly wounded"

I chucked my phone back into my pocket before getting out, slamming the car door and jogging to the crashed car. I saw the trail of grey smoke that drifted to the sky as I approached, burnt wood and thick smoke filled my nose. I covered up half of my face with my hand as I felt my lungs grow heavy from the fog and smoke.

But as the smoke faded, I could see the crashed car in front of a crooked tree, almost as if a small gust of wind can knock it down to the ground.

Glass crunched under my shoes, the only sound coming from around me. I crept in closer to the car, only to see a limp figure lying on the ground at a short distance from me.

I gasped, kneeling next to the unconscious figure. "Are you alright? The paramedics are on their way- "

I had the urge to cry, to let the tears go as I see how bloody and tired her face looked, how Abby had her eyes closed while an open wound bled on her head.

But then pain exploded from behind me, coming intensely from the back of my head. A second I was kneeling next to her, but then all I see was the blinding rays of the light post above me.

I swayed as I stood up, my vision blurring as my skull felt like it was going to crack. I saw the black figure of a man holding a rock in is hand with blood coated on the front.

"Not this time, not again"

I heard sirens, and then the flashing colors of red and blue filled the dark sky. I snickered and chuckled as I looked at him in amusement.

"Took you off guard, should've ran when I came here in the first place"

His eyes widened, as if realizing his mistake before a distinct shout rang in my ears.

"Don't move! We will shoot you!"

I heard the rock hitting the ground before I spotted both of his hands raised in surrender.

I swayed and prepared to greet the hard floor, before realizing that someone had caught me before I managed to black out.

"Don't die on me man, please don't. Abby needs you"

I groaned, letting him lead me off to somewhere. "I'm so tired, let me sleep"

I heard footstep approach, then a bright light was directed to my face. "Sir please stay awake, your hit was severe, you might end up in coma"

Charles shook me gently, forcing me to stay awake. "This is all my fault, I should've followed after you"

The paramedic cleaned the wound on my head, wrapping a bandage around my forehead. "Watch over for Abby while I'm out cold okay? I don't want her worrying about me when she wakes up"

"Don't say that, please Parker you have to stay awake"

I felt the last bit of my strength drift away, chuckling before oblivion would consume me. "When I wake up, please bring me doughnuts, I'll be craving those even when I'm in coma"

I heard the paramedic shouting, Charles screaming at me to wake up as he shook me.

Then I felt nothing.
