Chapter 2

Disclaimer: I don't own The Flash or any of its characters. I only own my OC's. :)

When I wake up, there is a slither of light coming from the small window in the corner of the room, my only indication that it is day. I slowly sit up, groaning as my head starts to pound. My stomach ache, however, has completely disappeared. Seeing as I am OK now, I quickly rule out appendicitis. From that measure of pain, I'm not sure what it was.

My stomach growls as a signal it is time to get up and get some food. The only issue being, I have no money. Back home, I never had to buy any food, it was always just on the table. There weren't any grocery stores anyway, so I don't even know where that food came from.

I speed over to my bag that is still on the crate next to me and I quickly get dressed into what I was wearing yesterday. I pull on a thin jumper as well as it looks relatively warm outside. Lastly, I put on my black boots, the same kind as the ones I managed to set on fire, and run out the door.

I run back into the lounge room I arrived in yesterday and, finding it void of any people, I quickly search through the multiple cupboards and fridge until I find enough food to satisfy my hunger.

In the fridge, I found 2 white bags that say Big Belly Burger on them and in the cupboard, some dried beef jerky. As I chew on some of the jerky as I search through the bags. In the first one I find 3 burgers, 3 bags of fries and one piece of chicken. The second one is exactly the same except there is no chicken. Using my speed, I quickly gobble it down and throw the empty bags in the bin. I run out of the lounge and instead of trying to find the exit of the building, I just phase through one of the exterior walls. I squint in the bright morning light, bringing my hand up to shield my eyes from the sun. I need to find some sort of job so that I can get money for food and eventually, a place to stay.

I run down the street and come to a stop in front of a coffee shop that says they are hiring in the window. I push open the door, letting it swing shut behind me. I walk over to the counter where a young barista, maybe 18 or 19 years old, is making some coffee. She quickly finishes making it before she turns to me.
“Hi there, can I get you anything?” She asks me with a friendly smile.
“Are you still hiring?” I ask her.
“Yup. Nobody wants to work here anymore with all the metahumans always attacking this place.”
“Well, can I get the job?”
Her smile grows even wider.
“That would be great! It gets so boring working here alone,” she says, “I’m Sasha by the way.” She holds out her hand.
“Lexi,” I reply, shaking her hand.

Sasha doesn’t even bother doing an interview or anything, leading me to the back, she hands me an apron that says CC Jitters on in and gives me a fast crash course on how to make multiple drinks on the menu.
“If you get stuck, just tell me and I’ll show you what to do,” she tells me. The bell above the door rings as a young woman with auburn coloured, curly hair and blue eyes walks in followed by a young Colombian man with shoulder length black hair.
“Good luck,” Sasha whispers as she walks into the kitchen in the back to start baking more cronuts, we are fresh out. The man and woman walk up to the counter not bothering to look at the menu before ordering their drinks, they must be regulars.

“Can we have one decaf coffee, one iced tea, one Killer Frost and three Flashes,” the Colombian man asks.
“Sure thing,” I say with a smile, “That will be $36.40.”
He looks at the woman pleadingly.
“Caitlin, I forgot my wallet..” The woman, Caitlin, shakes her head before she digs through her purse, pulling out the money and handing it to me.
“You owe me Cisco, I paid last time as well,” she says but the tone of her voice suggests she doesn’t really mind paying. I put the money into the cashier and walk over to the coffee machine to start making their drinks.

I quickly make the 3 Flashes and the decaf coffee but find myself clueless on how to make the Killer Frost. I think Sasha mentioned it was a smoothie.
“Hey Sasha, how do I make the Killer Frost?” I ask her. She walks out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron as she comes up to me. She shows me how to dice up all the fruits and to use the blender to turn them, and a dollop of ice cream, into a smoothie. I place all the drinks in to go cups and put them on a cardboard tray that Sasha hands me. I hand them to Caitlin and Cisco who thank me before heading out.

For the rest of the day it is relatively quiet, only getting 10 or so customers during lunch hour, so Sasha says I can leave early. As I’m taking off my apron in the tiny break room, Sasha walks in with an envelope in her hands.
“Here is your first pay, I don’t usually give it up front but you did a really good job today, your next pay will be the same day next week.”
“Thank you so much,” I say as she hands me the money. I didn’t expect to get paid today and it will really help. I put on my jumper and say goodbye to Sasha.

Clutching the envelope tightly against my chest, I walk through the street toward the library. It gets so boring reading the same book over and over. As I walk towards the library, I open the envelope and look at the money inside. There is a lot of it. I count it all up and it equals $700. That is $100 dollars a day as this is my pay for the next week. I suddenly bump into someone, causing me to spill the wads of money everywhere.
"I'm so sorry, let me help you," the man I bumped into says. I quickly grab a handful of stacks of notes, happy the 20 dollar notes are all tied together in neat stacks with a rubber band. I look up as the man I bumped into hands me the remaining stacks.
"Thank you…" I start but stop when I see who it is I bumped into. Barry Allen. I stare wide eyed at him for a few seconds before he chuckles nervously.
"You didn't rob a bank, did you?" he asks. I stare at him confused for a second before he clarifies.
"You know, all the money." he gestures towards the envelope filled with money.
"Oh, no, it's my first payday at a new job."
"Are you new to Central city?"
"I arrived yesterday," I answer.
"well, welcome to Central city. Did your parents make you get a holiday job?" he asks. Right, I remember. It is the holidays right now and most other kids my age pass the time by getting small part time jobs.
I nod in reply.
"I should get going," he says, glancing at his watch, "and you should get a safe or something for all that money." he waves goodbye and rushes off, disappearing into the crowd of people that swarm the streets. I can't believe I just ran into Barry Allen, a whole city full of people and he is the one I bump into.

I fold my envelope of money into the pocket of my jumper and zip up the pocket, feeling foolish for not having done it earlier.

After  spending hours in the vast library, only leaving because it has to close, I run back to the STAR Labs storage room with a few books in hand. I don't have a library card but managed to find a few good books in the one dollar book section. I sit down on my makeshift, blanket bed and flip through the first book while eating some more big belly burger I snagged from the kitchen. They will probably notice it missing but hopefully just blame Barry, or Wally, for eating it all. I would just buy some with the money I got today but I want to save that up to find a proper place to stay. I can't live in this storage room forever.

I finish my burger and chips before licking my fingers clean of grease. I quickly guzzle down a few bottles of water and speed over to my bag to change into a pair of baggy clothes I have dubbed my pj's. I yawn and run over to my blankets, rubbing my eyes as I do so. I lie down and snuggle into the soft, fluffy blankets, exhausted from the long day of work. Knowing I have another long day ahead of me, I quickly fall asleep.
