The Grilled Cheese

Annabeth walked into her apartment, she stretched and put her bag on the couch.

"Percy! I'm home!" she called.

Percy walked out of their bedroom and kissed Annabeth on the cheek.

"So how was your first full day of class, Wise Girl?" Percy pulled away holding both of Annabeth's hands. She leaned against the back of the couch.

"Pretty good. I'm just tired and hungry. I might make a grilled cheese." She played with Percy's fingers that were interlocked with hers.

"Ooh. That sounds delicious. Can you make me one too? I'd do it myself but, I was about to bring down some laundry." Percy looked down at Annabeth with puppy dog  eyes.

Annabeth chuckled.

"Of course." Annabeth kissed Percy on the lips and cradled his cheek with her hand.

Percy pulled away and kissed Annabeth on the forehead. Gods how much she loved him.

"I'm gonna go get the laundry!" He walked back into the bedroom holding Annabeth's hand till it was physically impossible.

Annabeth laughed, still leaning against the couch, a hand to her face.

Percy came sprinting out of the room holding the hamper. He hurried towards the door and out of the apartment calling, "I love you!" behind him.

"Love you too!" Annabeth called closing the door behind her over excited fiance.

Annabeth went to the kitchen and then grabbed a new pan from the cabinet. She turned on the stove and started melting butter as she grabbed four slices of bread and two slices of cheese. She put together the sandwiches and then put one on the pan.She set the other one on a wooden cutting board, sliding it next to the pan. She stared at it waiting for it to cook.

But she was bored. And her ADHD mind started wandering. To her classes. To how much she loved Percy. Wondering how Piper was doing. If Estelle missed her brother.

"Shit." Annabeth said out loud. She hurried to where her bag was on the couch and started rifling through her papers. She couldn't remember if she had grabbed the syllabus paper her Ancient Architecture professor had told them to take before they left. But then the smell of smoke filled her nostrils. Annabeth coughed and looked up to where her grilled cheese pan sat.

It was engulfed with flames. Flames that had spread to the wooden cutting board. Annabeth screamed.

She ran to the flames, still clutching a handful of papers. She began blowing furiously on the flames which only caused it to drop in size a little. She fanned the flame with her papers but it spiked towards her and she dropped them into it causing it to rise even more.

She ran to the sink and turned it on. She then remembered the fire extinguisher under the sink and crouched down to find it, ignoring the fact that the sink was on. She grabbed it the second the fire alarms turned on. She fumbled with it trying to get it to spray.

Then Percy burst in the door holding a full hamper. He dropped it and controlled the dripping sink to hit the flame at the same moment Annabeth got the fire extinguisher to work.

Once the flame was out, Percy shut off the sink and ran to Annabeth who was standing there still holding the fire extinguisher. She dropped it on the floor  and Percy ran up to her and hugged her tightly.

"What happened? You were doing the laundry?" she asked, wrapping her arms around him.

"I forgot the laundry room is closed on Fri- what happened to me? Annie, what happened to you?! You started a fire?" Percy pulled away and studied the burnt cutting board and two charred grilled cheeses. Annabeth looked towards the pan and a wave of embarrassment washed over her.

"Oh gods. I forgot." Annabeth said, putting her face in her hands.

"What?"

"That was a new pan. It had the tag on the bottom. I got distracted and then it got out of hand. Oh gods. A real daughter of Athena move." Annabeth chuckled under her breath at her own stupidity. Percy smiled and kissed Annabeth on the cheek, glad that she was safe.

"We better get downstairs since the alarm is still going." Annabeth said.

"Yeah. I'm glad you're okay, Not-So-Wise Girl." Percy teased her.

"Hey! One mistake doesn't make me not wise!"

Annabeth looked back at the charred piece of paper that laid halfway on the pan and partly on the cutting board that she had put way to close to the burner in the first place.

"But maybe three of them causing a fire does." She laughed, draping Percy's arm over her shoulders.

Percy looked shocked as the hurried out of the apartment.

"Three?"

Here is the wonderful story about a grilled cheese which is a weird thing to upload with the current state of the world in mind.
