Chapter 1

"AMELIA FELICE KIRKLAND!! I AM DOWNRIGHT SICK AND TIRED OF YOU MOPING ABOUT LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW! GET YOUR LAZY BUM OUT LOOKING FOR A JOB!!"

My mother's words ricocheted through my skull as though I were still in that wretched, rundown shack of an apartment that we call a home nowadays. Ever since the Depression hit, we've barely had any times where we're not silent, listening to the radio, or arguing. It's been especially hard on my papa, who lost his business, which resulted in my sister Madeline and I losing our jobs as waitresses that we had there. As I roamed the streets of New York City, my path lit with the warm orange and golden rays from the setting sun over the buildings, I noticed a 'Help Wanted' sign in the window of a small shop which had a few people sitting outside holding out cups for change that anyone could spare.

As I made my way towards the entrance, someone snatched my purse from my grip, running off down the pavement. I cried out and chased the person for a few blocks until a blonde man in a police uniform grabbed the thief by the arm and took my purse from them, handing it back to me.

"I believe zhis belongs to you, mademoiselle, non?"
