XXIII - A piece of the past uncovered

Draven sat alone in the darkness. The wound on his shoulder still hurt. The searing pain travelled throughout his body. He was used to pain. It was familiar to him. But this pain felt different. He looked around the darkness. And then he heard it.

"YOU MONSTER!!!"

The voice defiantly sounded scared and weak, and it echoed through his mind for what seemed like ages.

And then he heard it again. But a different voice. His own.

"Ellie! I can explain!"

"STAY AWAY FROM ME DRAVEN!"

"But-"

"YOU'RE A MONSTER! YOU HEAR ME?! A MONSTER! YOU'RE JUST LIKE DAD!!!"

"I'M NOTHING LIKE DAD!!! I  WANT PEACE! I WANT TO END THIS WAR!!!"

"YOU WANT PEACE?! YOU JUST KILLED AN INNOCENT PERSON DRAVEN!!!"

His mind suddenly seemed to switch from assassinating Jet Blac to the memories which he tried to forget. He didn't want to remember the past, but it suddenly came rushing back to him like a bullet train...

One year ago

A young silver haired nineteen year old stood with his elder sister. The dying rotted leaves of the trees fell to the ice cold ground. "It's cold!" His elder sister exclaimed, wrapping her crimson cloak around her as she trudged through the white snow. Snowflakes also began to slowly glide down, shimmering in the cold icy light.

The silver haired boy stopped trudging, his blood red eyes casting about the surroundings. "I guess we'll need to find a cave or something then?" He asked.

His sister nodded. "Yes Draven. Good idea. Mom will be able to find us. I'll text her on my scroll when we get there."

The younger Draven smiled slightly. "Sounds like a plan Ellie." Ellie beamed at him, and rubbed her hands together in order to keep herself warm. "I'll go gather the firewood."

"Wait, where are staying Ellie?" Draven asked, raising one eyebrow. Ellie nodded to an unoccupied cave a few miles away. "There. I'll meet you there."

Draven sighed, a hugged his elder sister. "See you Ellie."

"Yes, see you in an hour or so!"

---

"I'm glad you two found somewhere to stay the night." Draven's mother smiled at her two children. "Tomorrow, we'll make our way out of Mistral and off to Vale. I believe we'll be safer there."

Ellie's eyes suddenly started to well up with tears. "Ellie, what's wrong?" Draven asked, a tone of panic in his voice.

"It's just..." Ellie gulped. "It's so much to take in! Dad's actually a pure evil assassin, and he took Brendan with him! I don't want Brendan to be hurt!"

"Brendan will be fine!"  Draven assured her. "I'm pretty sure Dad wouldn't hurt Brendan anyways. He's always been fond of him."

"But Dad's a monster!" Ellie cried. "He destroyed innocent lives and who knows, he may be part of Salem's Faction!"

"Dad isn't that evil, is he Mom?!" Draven exclaimed, glancing at his mother with concern in his eyes. Kathleen Graphite sighed and looked out of the cave.

Night was already starting to fall. The occasional howl of a Beowolf echoed throughout the roaring wind.

"That has yet to be decided." Kathleen lit a fire in the centre of the cave. The cave was suddenly encased with warmth and a wonderful sunset orange light which illuminated the cave perfectly.

She looked at her son with her bright cyan eyes, which were filled with nothing but fear. "I thought your father was a wonderful man when I met him. I was falling head over heels for him! And then we had you, Ellie. Our little shine of light!"

Ellie wiped the tears from her eyes.

"And then you, Draven! Our little flash of lightning! The boy who is destined to save lives!"

Draven looked up at his mother, tears beginning to form in his eyes.

"And finally, Brendan. The little shimmer of hope!"

Ellie sighed. "Poor Brendan..." She whispered. "He's only eleven."

Desperate to change the subject, Kathleen cleared her throat. "Draven, have you found your semblance yet?"  She asked.

"No." Draven lied. However, the truth was that he had found his semblance, he just feared showing it. Inflicting pain on others wasn't exactly the most good of semblance's. And now he knew that his semblance was partly just like his fathers.

He knew what would happen if he did use his semblance in front of his own mother and sister. He knew what they were like. They would flee at the sight of his semblance in action.

They sat in silence. The only sounds which could be heard was the crackling of the fire and the howling of the wind outside. The Beowolf howling had seemed to have stopped abruptly.

And suddenly, they heard it. Footsteps crunching through the snow. "Shit! Your father has probably figured out were we are! We need to leave now!" Kathleen hissed.

They all ran outside. "You go ahead!" Draven yelled, as he turned to face the darkness. A figure could only just be seen trudging through the snow.

"Where... are... they?" A voice growled.

However, Kathleen and Ellie didn't run. They stood there, frozen in fear.

And then Draven did the unthinkable. He used his semblance. There was a short cry of pain, and suddenly the figure fell into the light. An old farmer.

Draven took a step back, mortified at what he had just done.

"Draven..." Ellie whispered. "YOU MONSTER!!!"

---

"Drav! Drav!" Draven suddenly snapped back into reality. Celenia stood next to him, her hand on his unwounded shoulder. "Drav, are you alright?"

"Yeah, I-I'm fine babe." Draven said in a assuring but slightly scared tone. He kissed Celenia on the cheek, and got to his feet.

Celenia blushed and sighed in relief. "Good. You seemed to be having a nightmare or something."

Draven stared at her. "Was it really that bad?" He whispered.

Celenia raised one eyebrow. "Yeah, I guess. But I'm glad you're fine." She said. "Anyways, Salem wants to talk to us. And I also need to tend to your wounds."

Draven nodded as Celenia grabbed his hand and they walked out of the room.
