Episode 25: what now?...

Amy was still in the hospital's emergency room. She was lying in a hospital bed. She was trying to wait very patiently for the doctor
.
Her mother, Anne was stressing out. She was sitting right next to her daughter trying to comfort her and trying to keep her calm. But how could Anne keep her calm, if she was the one being so nervous, and afraid of Amy's test results.

It was very silent in the room. The only sound you could hear, was the heart monitor.

Several minutes later the door opened. A male figure appeared.
Amy squeezed her eyes a little bit, because of the very bright light that was beside the male figure.
He was a young man. About the age of 25. And he looked kinda hot to be a doctor. You could see his muscles through his coat. He was wearing a white, long coat. And he had a stethoscope around his neck. He also had glasses on. And he was holding a clipboard with documents.

"Hello. I'm Dr. Drey. I'm your doctor. You must be Amy Juergens?"
Amy nodded, uncertain.
"Hi, i'm Anne. Amy's mom." Anne shook the doctor's hand.

"We've been waiting for such a long time for you to come doctor! We're so glad that you're here." Anne smiled, relieved.
The doctor nodded. "I'm very sorry for the slow process. But i do have other patients, who are in bad conditions."
Anne nodded. "We understand. Even though it wasn't pleasant for us to wait for such a long time, not knowing anything. But you're here now so..."
Dr. Drey smiled. "You know what they say? Better late than never. Right?... So. That being said. I have the test results right here."

Dr. Drey sighed and looked at Amy.
"Before i go there, to the results i mean. I have to ask you some questions. I do have your file, but this is just to make sure everything's right on your files. Is it okay for you to answer my questions?"
Amy nodded. "Yes it's okay."
Dr. Drey looked down at a document he was holding. "You just have to answer with yes or no!"
He turned the page.
"Is your fully name Amy Juergens-Underwood?"
Amy looked confused. "No, it's just Amy Juergens. Not Underwood!"
Anne looked at the doctor. "Underwood is the last name of the baby's father."
Dr. Drey nodded. "Okay. You're 18 years old?"
"Yes." Amy said.
"Before you lost consciousness in the basement you were carrying boxes?"
"Yes, i did carry some boxes." Amy responded back.
"Did you feel... Kind of weird this week? Did you had lower back pain? And did you had some bad aches in your lower belly and in your uterus?"
Amy nodded. "Yes, i felt that pain."

Anne looked worried, she didn't know what the doctor might say."
"Did you notice rapid weight gain during this pregnancy?"
Amy nodded. "Yes, because not too long ago i didn't even show. And in all of a sudden i gained a lot of weight."
Dr. Drey nodded and wrote something down.
"did you had severe headaches and changes in reflexes?"
Amy looked confused. "A big yes to the headaches. But i do think it has to do with the fact that i'm in college, and i'm under a lot of stress because of some circumstances that are occurring. And i honestly don't know anything about changes in reflexes?"

"And what about dizziness, excessive vomiting and nausea?" Dr. Drey asked.
"Yes, i get dizzy quicker than in my previous pregnancy. And i actually threw up not too long ago. I thought it was kinda weird, because in my experience morning sickness normally doesn't take that long. It disappeared after three months of being pregnant in my previous pregnancy. And i'm almost six months pregnant and i still throw up every now and then."
Dr. Drey nodded.

"And the last question. Did you notice swelling in your feet, legs, and hands, during your pregnancy?"
Amy thought about it. She was so busy these months that she hadn't noticed her feet, legs and hands swelling.
"Yes." She said.
"Okay. Thank you for answering the questions."

Dr. Drey took a chair and sat down. Amy tried to sit upright but she didn't had the strength to do it.
"Mom, can you help me for a second?" She asked.
Anne stood up and helped her to sit upright."
"Okay. Amy... I've tested your blood, urine and i also put you on the heart monitor. I came to conclusion that you had something most pregnant women get while they are pregnant."

Amy looked worried, and tried to stay calm. "What's wrong with me? Whatever it is, i'm sure that i can handle it."

Dr. Drey sighed. "I don't think you can handle this."

He looked into Amy's eyes.
"You have Preeclampsia!"
Amy seemed to be confused. She never heard of it before. "What's... That?"

"Preeclampsia is a condition that pregnant women develop. It is marked by high blood pressure. And you have high blood pressure. And a high level of protein in your urine. Preeclamptic women will often also have swelling in the feet, legs, and hands."
Amy sighed. "Is it bad? What can happen with this condition?"
Dr. Drey stood up.
"Preeclampsia can prevent the placenta from receiving enough blood, which can cause your baby to be born very small. It is also one of the leading causes of premature births, and the complications that can follow, including learning disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, hearing and vision problems."
Amy bit her lip and a tear fell from her eye.
"The chance is also big that by 37 weeks or even later, your doctor in California may want to induce labor or perform a cesarean section. This will keep preeclampsia from getting worse."

Amy shook her head. "I can't believe this. But why do i have the condition?"
Dr. Drey stood sincere.
"Preeclampsia is most often seen in first-time pregnancies, in pregnant teens, and in women over 40. Your not pregnant for the first time, and your not 40 years old. You are still a teen. And that's what caused this condition to break through."

Anne looked down. "But i don't understand. I had my third child when i was 40+. And Amy had a baby when she was fiftheen. How can this even be possible?"

"Look, i know that this might be hard on you. It doesn't mean that one person has Preeclampsia, that everyone else has the condition. And i understand that she already had a baby at age fiftheen. But you have to think and realize that this could be the reason why she has it now. Because of her previous teenage pregnancy. Another pregnancy followed within three years. Her body could handle her first pregnancy, but not 2 within three years away from each other." Dr. Drey said.

Amy looked at her belly. She shook her head. She refused to believe it, that she had this dangerous condition.
"Dr. Drey?" Amy asked, wondered.

"Yes."

"What can happen while i give birth or after i give birth to my baby?"
Dr. Drey sighed. "What you first have to know is that this condition depends on how strong your body is. And in how strong you are as a person. But what could happen with the condition is that, in moms-to-be, preeclampsia can cause rare but serious complications that you can have a stroke after you've giving birth to your child. But this only happens if the condition is badly and wrong. And you don't have it badly. Your in the first stage of Preeclampsia.

Amy looked confused. "What's worse than Preeclampsia?"

"Well." Dr. Drey said. "Eclampsia! Eclampsia is worse and much dangerous than Preeclampsia. If you have Eclampsia, you can end up with water in the lungs, heart failure, reversible blindness, bleeding from the liver, bleeding after you've given birth... It can also cause the placenta to suddenly separate from the uterus, which is called placental abruption..." Dr. Drey paused and sighed. "This can cause stillbirth."

After hearing the word stillbirth Amy and Anne both looked at each other. Amy wiped a tear away and Anne looked down. She squeezed her daughter's hand.
"And your're a 100% sure she has Preeclampsia and not Eclampsia?" Anne asked.
Dr. Drey nodded. "Yes, the test results don't lie. She's not in any kind of danger at this stage. Eclampsia is very dangerous. Dangerous to mother and child. But Preeclampsia doesn't put her and the baby in any life danger."

"Can it be fixed. Can this conditon be treated so that it doesn't get worse?" Amy asked.
"The only cure for Preeclampsia and Eclampsia is to deliver the baby... But you have Mild-Preclampsia. And the best cure for you right now to do when your back home is to have bed rest! And you have to relax, try not to have stress, and rest mostly on your left side. If you do all of that, this baby will be just fine!
And when your back in California visit the hospital frequently, to have observation with a heart rate monitor and frequent ultrasounds.
The doctors there can also give you medicines to lower your blood pressure. And give you urine tests."

Dr. Drey sighed. "As if for now, i'm going to prescribe you some medicine to help prevent seizures, lower your blood pressure, and prevent other problems. And also steroid injections to help your baby's lungs develop more quickly."

Amy nodded and sighed. "If this is how it is, i can't change it... But when... When will the condition disappear?"

"It will completely disappear after you delivered the baby. But in the worst case, signs and symptoms of preeclampsia should go away within 1 to 6 weeks after the baby's born."

Dr. Drey walked towards Amy and shook her hand. While he shook her hand and pulled away, he left a note in her hand.

"Good luck with your pregnancy and the delivery of this baby in California. Good luck Ms. Juergens, and not Underwood."
Dr. Drey winked and walked out of the room.

"Did he just wink at you?" Anne asked, wondering if the doctor was flirting with Amy.
Amy nodded. "It seems like he did."
Anne stood up. "I'm going to get some coffee in the cafetaria, and i'm going to call your father. Do you need something?"
Amy shook her head. "I'm good."
Anne walked towards the door, and stopped.
"Oh, before i forget. Should i call Ricky too, or should i let your father tell him?"
Amy bit her lip. "I don't know. I honestly don't want to tell him."

"He's the father Amy. No matter how big your hatred for him is right now, he has to know!"
Amy nodded. "You're right, mom! Call him, but call him after you've talked to dad."

Anne nodded and walked out of the hospital's room.

Amy looked down. She opened the note the doctor had left her. It said:

"Good luck with this pregnancy. I hope everything will work out for you. And if you and the baby daddy are no longer a couple, please give me a call! My number is on the back of this note.
- Dr. D."

Amy looked up.
"What just happened?..." She thought.
