chapter three - the flight

lyndon williams

monday, june 18th

We all woke up around the same time and everyone came back to my hotel room. Then we went to enjoy the free breakfast as everyone said their goodbyes to their family.

I walked over to my parents, Dylan, and Sierra who had driven the hours to say goodbye. They all had different looks on their faces. Dylan with a supportive and sad face. Sierra with just a sad face. And my mom parents with their scared and supportive face.

"Promise you'll call when you land?" my mom asked quietly as she hugged me.

"You know I will"

"Make sure you get me and Sierra something from LA!" Dylan said as he wrapped his arms around me and placed a kiss on my forehead.

My dad gave me a sad look as I walked over to him.

"You know I'll miss you more than they will." he said sadly.

"I know." I said as he looked down at me.

"You'll do great. I'm proud of you." he said. I didn't respond because I knew I would probably cry and they didn't need that right now.

Then Sierra. She stood a couple feet away looking at all of the travel things in the hotel lobby. Then she looked up and walked towards me. We didn't even say a word. We hugged for what felt like forever. I hated leaving her. But we both knew it was for the best.

"I love you guys!" I said as I grabbed my luggage, two muffins, and a white Powerade from the breakfast line and headed onto the bus that would take us to the airport. They waved and started saying their 'I love you's.

I went up the steps onto the bus and immediately saw Julie wave me over. I saw that all of our seats were marked with velcro name badges in the US colours. I also saw that all of the new teammates were in front of the bus all lined up, while all the OG Ducks were sitting in the back by their best friends, or in Connie and Guys case they sat by their significant others. I'm not going to lie after talking to Guy last night. Even if it was only a couple minutes, I was kinda jealous of Connie. I looked at them and Julie noticed.

She sighed, "Let me guess. You like Guy?" she questioned. She read me like a book and I only met this girl yesterday.

"What? No! I met him yesterday. No feelings. He is cute though, I can't deny that." I giggled quietly.

"Who's cute?" Guy peered around the seat as he said it.

"Oh just some guy we saw at the hotel breakfast" Julie said. There was no breakfast boy. I could feel my cheeks burning up as she said that.

He turned back around to his seat. As soon as he did Julie and I made eye contact and started giggling.

The bus finally started moving and some soft music played over the radio. Midnight Memories. I could hear everyone start singing and right when it came to the end we arrived at the airport.

We all went through security and arrived in a little area that had our Team USA gear. I got to my bag and opened it. There were skates, pads, jackets, sweats, socks, hats, and our jerseys. All red, white and blue with 'Hendricks' all over it.

"You'd think we'd at least be able to keep our original colours." Charlie said to Bombay. I could hear them talking but not make out what they said.

I lifted up my jersey and saw 'WILLIAMS' in white lettering and looked down to see my number.

"What number you get?" Julie asked. I saw her holding up her iconic number six.

"Fifteen." I held up. It's always been my number.

"Hey my second favourite number, compared to zero." Guy said. I had no idea he was right next to me. He held up his jersey to him to compare it to his body.

"You know kinda hate these colours." He spoke.

"Why? We're playing for team USA and we have the American colours." I asked.

"Yeah but we all thought we'd get to be the Ducks. Since you know that's what we are." he responded quietly.

"That makes sense I guess." Julie said.

All of a sudden Bombay and Tibbles spoke, "Alright everyone your tickets-" Bombay started. "Your tickets are in your bags in the red pouch!" Tibbles finished.

"What seat do you have?" Connie asked Guy.

"R76." he said.

"Damn, I have S52." she responded.

I made my way into their conversation, "Hey I have R77, and I know Julie has S51, we can see if we can switch."

"No it's okay, don't worry about me. I'll let you get to know Guy and I think Banksie is in the aisle seat. So you can talk to them and I'll get to know Julie." she said kindly. She had to be the nicest person ever to let me sit next to her boyfriend. I definitely need to be friends with her since I can't date Guy.

We boarded the plane and we took off. I realized once we were in the air that my Airpods were dead and my phone didn't have a headphone jack. Meaning I couldn't use the planes headphones.

I looked over at Guy who was looking out the window and to the other side of me who was Adam. Sleeping like a baby. Guy looked over at me and Adam.

"He's out isn't he?" he said. A grin snuck onto his face.

I smiled at him, "Yeah, he passed out the minute the plane took off."

"Let's ignore him, we didn't really get to talk more last night before we went to bed," he said.

"What do you wanna talk about?" I asked him.

"Well I know everything about everyone on this team-" he said before I cut him off.

"You wanna know more things about me" I said. He nodded.

"Like I said last night, I'm from Wisconsin but uh..." Was I really about to open up to him? "Uhm I've been here before but, Minnesota was pretty cool besides from what I've heard", I bit my tongue because I was not about to tell him everything. At least yet.

"Well what have you heard?" he asked smiling his gorgeous smile.

"Vikings."

"Oooo. You're a Packers fan aren't you?" he said his face getting sarcastic.

"Die hard, since I was born." I told him.

"Don't tell anyone I said this" he said secretively, "I am too. Just do not tell Connie."

I held up my pinkie, "I swear." He locked pinkies with me.

Twenty minutes later

After talking with Guy about the Packers and agreed that the best colour in the world was green, the beverage cart came around and Adam woke up.

"Diet Coke please." Adam said. As the lady poured his drink Guy whispered in my ear.

"This is the ultimate test, which drink are she going to get? A hot drink? A cold drink? Maybe a carbonated one? Or maybe she's feeling frisky and is going to get an ice water! We will see folks, we will see!" He said in a game announcer voice.

"Let's see, could I please have a Sprite." I said sticking my tongue out at Guy.

"And she made a great choice ladies and gentlemen!" the woman asked him what he wanted, "You know what, I'll take a Sprite too," he said confidently.

Adam looked at us, "Guy, you're not going for Williams are you?" My jaw dropped. So did Guy's.

"Banks you are out of your mind" Guy said, as I nodded I spoke up. I didn't even know how to feel, yeah he had a girlfriend but maybe he didn't have to deny it so hard.

"Adam I think they put something in your Coke, or it's the planes altitude" Just as I said that Gordon came into our row. I tried hard not to look sad.

"You three, you're next in the bathroom. We're gonna touch down in an hour and we need our Team USA gear on." we nodded.

We all got changed and the plane landed. I found Julie and walked with her, Guy, and Connie to find our luggage.

"Are you guys as excited as I am?" Connie asked eagerly. I responded happily;

"You don't even know."
