chapter ten - iceland

lyndon williams

friday, june 22nd around 1:30

Sleeping away the punch felt amazing. I woke up to being gently pushed back and forth.

"Lyndon, wake up. Foods here!" Guy whispered softly. My eyes fluttered open to see that Guy was looking down at me. I had fallen asleep on his lap. He didn't move. He actually stayed.

"We have Chinese, Mexican, or Italian." Connie spoke as she interrupted my thoughts. The girls had gotten back with the food and Dylan and Sierra must've went sightseeing because they got back with Hollywood T-Shirts. I slowly sat up and brushed off the small pain I had felt in my stomach. I had to play today.

"Depends on what you have." I groggily said while I got up to get my hockey bag ready.

"Well for Chinese we had wontons, egg rolls, lo mien, and sesame chicken-" Julie started.

"Dibs on the sesame chicken!" Guy bursted. I laughed as I nodded at Julie to go on.

She laughed while handing Guy the chicken, "Mexican includes; Chicken tacos," Sierra raised her hand immediately, it was her favourite food. Julie handed them to her, "and quesadillas, and fajitas."

I shook my head. She opened the boxes of Italian food. "What do you have in there?" I asked.

"Chicken Alfredo-" she spoke.

"That. I'll take that." I interrupted her. It was one of my favourite things I couldn't say no.

Connie, Dylan, and Julie took their pickings at the rest of the food. They were all giving me looks of concernment and I knew what they were thinking.

"Guys, I'm fine. I promise. The hurting stopped and I want to play tonight!"

"Are you sure?" Dylan asked.

Sierra nodded, "We just don't know if you'll be okay to play against Iceland."

"I think she'll be okay. She did sleep pretty hard and with all the carbs she's eating the pain will probably go away." Guy assured them. I gave him a thankful look and continued to pack my bag. Connie and Julie got up to do the same.

"Do you think I'll be able to play today?" Julie sighed. I know she wanted to play more than anyone.

Guy looked at me confused. His face was full of sesame chicken so I could help but smile. His cheeks were full and he was still trying to stuff in more. "She really wants to play." I mouthed to him.

"I bet you will." I comforted her.

Connie walked over to her a rubbed her shoulder, "Yeah. I've known Goldberg my whole life and I think even he wants you to play."

Dylan and Sierra looked confused but continued to eat. "Where did you get these tacos?" Sierra asked with a mouthful.

"Just from some food truck," Julie said then biting her tongue. They were kinda the reason I got punched, "Sorry Lyndon."

"Don't worry about me."

We continued to get ready and eating before Guy questioned me. "Do you know who your admirer is yet?"

"Nope."

He looked down at his food then back at me.

"Do you have any idea?"

"Double nope."

"Wow."

"Yeah."

Silence overcame the group.

"Well I should probably go get ready myself. You look really good with those braids by the way." he said. I gave him a small side hug.

"Thank you for helping me today."

"Of course."

"See you on the bus." I said as I walked him to the door.

"Not if I see you first."

I smiled at him and shut the door.

When I turned around Sierra gasped, "He did not just pull out the Chris Chambers quote."

"He just did." Julie laughed in response.

I rolled my eyes them and grabbed my high top black vans. I made sure everything was in there before zipping it up.

"I'll see you guys there, tickets are on my dresser, and if you guys get hungry there are leftovers in the mini fridge!" I said to the two as Julie, Connie, and I left with our bag.

"Thanks mom." Dylan snickered. I sent him a wink before I shut the door.

"Alright are we ready for warmups?" Coach Bombay clapped as he entered the locker room, "Let's go!"

He made me furious. After the way he treated Lyndon today I don't know how she didn't want to pounce onto him like a cheetah.

"Hey nice jacket did you get two pairs of pants with that?" Averman said abruptly. We all laughed like little kids just to rub it in.

"You okay?" Lyndon whispered in my ear.

"Yeah I'm fantastic why?"

"Well I think your stick needs a breath of air." she laughed. I looked down at my stick to see my knuckles turning white from gripping it so hard.

"Haha. I'm just ready to play. Especially against those Iceland bitches." I said trying to make her laugh.

"We got this today. If anything I want to show up those bastards that decided it would be okay to punch me." she said. She waited as I finished tying my skates and we waiting for Julie and Connie. Fulton and Dean were talking to Bombay. I hoped it was confronting him about today but he seemed to have kept his chill.

"Williams goal tender! Hall Face off! Germaine, Averman, Portman, Conway, and Mendoza! You'll start us!" Bombay yelled after we broke it down.

"Hey you got this." Guy assured me before I skated to the post.

I immediately saw that Jesse got shoved down and this team was way stronger than us. Dean swooped into Jesse and who I think was Gunnar.

"Alright young man that was unprovoked!" The ref told him.

Dean's arm knocked over the ref while he said 'huh!'

"You're out of the game!"

"Give me a break!" He yelled.

He skated off the ice and broke his stick.

"You're throwing him out? You can't do that! It's three seconds into the game!" Bombay furiously stated.

Once he was out Iceland had the puck. They were skating up the rink when I recognized who had the puck. The clown. Their mask didn't cover their whole face so I could see the eyes and they looks identical.

"Come and get it! Little girl!" He said. He shot it and scored because I was taking off my glove and slammed my stick on the ground.

"I'm not a little girl!" I shouted at him. I never rammed into someone so hard in my life. He went onto the ground before the ref skated over to me.

"Williams. 15. Unprovoked. I'm sorry but you're out of here too." The ref said.

"Seriously?!" I said to him in shock. I couldn't believe it.

"Bye bye!" The clown said sarcastically. I didn't leave without hitting him in the side with my stick.

"Another one?! Seriously ref?" Coach yelled as I skated off the ice. I looked at Guy who was on the rink watching me skate off. 'I'm sorry' I mouthed to him. 'I'm proud of you' he mouthed back. My stomach hurt more than anything as I walked to the locker room.

I walked into it seeing that Dean was pissed off. "Hows it going?" I asked him sarcastically.

"I'm proud of you for hitting that guy back. You're like a little bash sister." he smiled at me while punching a locker. He was watching the game furiously. I couldn't focus, my stomach pain was killing me. It was like knives were stabbing me, but I had to keep it in.

I managed trying to watch the game and saw that Adam and Luis were getting checked into the boards. Kenny tried doing some figure skating move and got checked into by Gunnar and the clown. We ended up going into the third period with them up by four and us with zero.

They scored right as the period started and they switched Goldberg for Julie! This was her moment! She got onto the ice and I saw that two Iceland boys skated up to her. The next thing I saw was they were on the ground and she was out of the game. She skated off the ice smiling.

"I know how you feel." She said as she walked in. Dean was throwing things around.

"What happened?" I asked her.

"They said stuff about me being a girl and how they sent me in to do a mans jobs, next thing I knew they were on the ground."

"You are the best." I told her as we clapped hands and fist bumped.

We watched the game and screamed at the TV like maniacs before seeing Adam finally score! Just as he did that someone took their stick to his wrist and smashed it against it. All he got was two minutes! Seriously?!

The game was finished and the score was 12-1. The team came back into the locker room without Coach. Guy sat next to me along with Jesse and Ken. Everyone was furious. Coach came in silently.

"Twelve to one. Do you know what word comes to mind when you think of that? Pathetic! You guys were brought here to play hockey!" he said. I couldn't stand him.

Jesse broke his speech, "What about you?"

"What about me Jesse?"

"Coach Stansson knew everything about us! They were ready for us!" Julie pursed at him.

"Yeah and you spend all your time driving around in convertibles talking to all those sponsor fools!" Luis said to him.

Fulton spoke up, "Or hanging with the Iceland lady, we saw you two Tuesday night!"

"Eating ice cream with the enemy? Huh coach?" Dean finished. We all gasped and looked at each other with shock.

"Is that why you yelled at Lyndon's brother when he brought up the Iceland team? After your player got punched in the stomach?" Guy asked.

"What I do in my personal life is none of your business and that also goes for what I say to people to make decisions, is that clear?" Coach said. We started taking off our pads when he spoke up again, "Don't take those pads off, everyone stay in your gear. We have practice."

"Tonight?" Goldberg asked.

We made our way out to the rink and got lined up. He blew the whistle and we did killers. He blew the whistle again. We all sat and watched him and Charlie talk.

"This isn't very fun coach." Charlie said.

"Who said it was supposed to be fun?"

"You did. When you coached the Ducks."

"Well I don't see any Ducks here Charlie." He said, "All I see is Team USA one losss away from elimination." He blew the whistle again. "Line up Charlie! Let's go! I'll keep you here all night if I have to!"

We did what felt like a million killers. When we got into the locker room my stomach felt like it was going to burst. I started taking my pads off and put all my gear into my locker. I took my shirt off to reveal my black and grey sports bra that was now accompanied by a huge black, blue and green bruise. I touched it and winced.

"Oh my god. Catch Catch are you okay?" Adam asked me. His eyes were huge. His jaw dropped.

"What is it?" Connie asked. She then looked down at my stomach to see it. The whole group gathered around to see it.

Averman's mouth opened with a stupid question, "Does it hurt?"

"Shut up Averman." Jesse, Charlie, Adam, and Guy said in sync. The continued to stare at it.

I got uncomfortable with everyone looking at me and put my T-Shirt on.

"Are you going to show Dylan?" Julie asked after.

"Probably not. He'd lose his shit at coach for not caring." I responded. "Plus he'd probably kill the dude that did it."

"You're not wrong."

We waiting for Connie, Luis, Adam, and Guy to be done and we walked with them out. It was dark but the lights of the city lit up everything. I didn't realize the time until I looked down at my FitBit. 10:52.

"Oh my god its late." I said in shock.

"I know. Now we aren't going to get back to our room before 11." Connie said.

"Dylan and Sierra are probably worried." Julie reminded us.

"We gotta get back soon then."

We started walking. It was mainly silent. Connie and Luis were holding hands, Guy seemed kind of uncomfortable, Adam just looked at his wrist, Julie was in awe looking at the sky and I just walked. Not thinking about anything.

We finally arrived at the dormitory, "Why does Bombay get to live in a fancy house with fancy cars?" Luis asked. We all shrugged.

"Why doesn't he even try to coach us anymore. We haven't had any practice since the first one, and now he's having dates with that Iceland chick." Julie exclaimed. We all agreed with her as the sliding automatic doors opened into the air conditioned lobby.

"Last year, he was a good coach. Well not at first. He was a real jerk at first. Then I guess he slowly came around. This is probably just a repeat." Connie assured us.

I saw balloons sitting on a table. White balloons, a green paper bag, and a tan envelope.

"Another gift?" I questioned.

Connie and Julie gave each other confused looks, "We didn't know about this one." Connie said. She actually didn't know.

"Open it." Guy insisted.

I opened the envelope.

Lyndon,

I wrote this before the game so how'd it go? Sorry if it went bad, but NICE JOB IF IT WENT GOOD. I can't wait to reveal myself. It will be soon, I promise. I just want it to be a good surprise. So to keep you waiting, here are some more balloons and by the way, Connie and Julie don't even know what's in the bag.

<3 your secret admirer

This person.

"What's it say?" Adam asked.

"They can't wait to reveal themselves."

They all gave each other giggly looks.

"So you all know who it is?" I questioned. They all nodded and giggled.

"Open the bag!" They all yelled.

I obeyed. I opened it to see a hockey puck. With a pink sticky note.

This is the puck you used to catch your first goal as goalie.

"It is definitely someone who has access to pucks." I said laughing. We had started walking to the elevator.

"What's so special about it?" Luis asked.

"It's the first goal I caught."

"Oh wow." he said in response.

We all packed into the elevator and went up in silence. Guy stood next to me, I yawned as I remember the long day we had. He looked at me and we made eye contact. I know I had an admirer but I still laid my head on his shoulder. I kept looking at the hockey puck. It was so nice to have it.

"I'll walk you to your room." he whispered. I nodded and yawned again.

We got to the boys floor and Adam, Luis, and Connie went down the hall. I knew they were both tired and wanted to be with each other. Not sexually.

Julie was staring at her phone and smiling so she was probably talking to a boy, she hadn't made any comments about me laying on his shoulder yet.

We got to our floor and we walked down the hall. I had never seen it so quiet. No one was talking it was just silent. Empty.

Julie opened the door and we saw that Sierra and Dylan were laying on my bed. A little to close but I brushed it off since I was so tired.

"I'll just sleep in Connies bed." I yawned again.

"Understandable." Julie replied whispering. She immediately fell asleep after plugging her phone in and taking off her shoes. Guy sat on Connie's bed.

I took my shoes off and brushed my teeth, I also realized that Guy was still sitting on Connie's bed.

"Don't you want to get to your room to sleep?" I asked him.

"I just want to make sure you get in bed and get to sleep."

"Why?"

"Just to make sure. Anxiety, you know? My sister always wants me to make sure I'm there when she falls asleep. So I just wanna make sure you get to sleep safely. Especially after the day you've had."

I had gotten under the covers and rested my head on the pillow. "You miss Marley?" I asked.

He nodded, "You remember her name?"

"Of course. I can't wait to meet her." my eyes felt more tired that I had to shut them. "Goodnight Guy, thank you for today."

"Goodnight Lyndon, sleep amazingly."
