Chapter 29

There was one day left until the Autumnal Equinox and I was enjoying the sunset on the beach. I knew that the next day would be crazy and that, by the end of the day, I would be stressed. At times like this, I would come to the beach and enjoy its beauty. Watching the sun, the colors reminded me of the day to come.

The sunset was a brilliant pink- red that lit up the whole beach in a iridescent glow. The color  reminded me of the color of Aphrodite's  dress on a weaved offering to her; one family of twelve, all amazing weavers, offered up tapestries to each of the gods. I had looked at the tapestries and was amazed, the gods were displayed on separate ones, but they looked so realistic.

Each of them radiated magical power, but only because they were each enchanted to move. The most surprising to me was Poseidon's tapestry. It depicted the god of the seas riding on a horse with his trident shining in the sun, the waves of the ocean crashed onto the sand in the background. But, the scariest thing was that looked like him. He had the green eyes, the perfect jawline, the brown hair and the perfect tan, his muscles rippled under his skin. After focusing on the background of the tapestry, I noticed that standing in the distance was a young lady with golden hair and green eyes! I freaked out when I saw that since the girl looked like me, I then inquired about it and the person who made the tapestry just frowned and said that they didn't add that there.

Ever since I had seen the tapestry, Poseidon's face had been etched into the back of my eyelids. I didn't feel for him anymore, all that feeling was gone. The kindling in my heart had gone out and sometimes when I saw him it would kickstart, but would always sputter out.

Forcing all thoughts of him out of my mind, I thought about the day to come, it would be a grand day, one of celebration and festivals, but also of mourning. The gods were being forced to endure these cold months under the rule of Hades, god of the underworld.

The sky was dark now and the air was charged with coldness, The rule of Hades was setting in, and this time it would be harsh and unforgiving.

Shivering, I stood up and walked up out of the beach and onto the cobbled road. I walked up the hill and around the city. Each house had a lantern with oil that burned at night, the lanterns were meant to ward off darkness and evil. Walking by Aclepius' house, I noticed his lantern. It was out, so I walked over to another house's lantern and plunged my hand in.

Instead of feeling burning, hot pain, I felt a slight tingling. Removing my hand, I could barely see the orb water surrounding my hand that kept me from burning. The fire burned brightly on the salt water orb. I walked over the Aclepius' lantern and placed my hand in it. In a bright flash, the lantern ignited, casting a haunting glow over the land.

The only reason that I had relit the lantern, besides the fact that we were friends was that he was now betrothed to a young lady. I didn't want him to get hurt or possessed by some lost demon or soul. He deserved a chance at a family, he had been so nice to me.

Slowly, I walked back home, a large gust of wind hit me in the face, chilling me to the bones. This reign of Hades would be the worst of all time.
