I reached the market just as the sun was making its way above the expanse of blue ocean. A cold, sea breeze swept up the hill making my blonde hair look like gold in the sunlight. Cold, I wrapped my green shawl tighter around me.
I kept walking until I reached a booth with red-brown banners. Within the booth there was a cage filled with the huddled forms of small black slaves. The cage was guarded by a jailor in leather armor. He was skinny and looked weak.
"Eh hem." I said catching his attention.
"What do you want?" He replied gruffly.
"Don't talk to me like that!" I said surprised by his rudeness.
"I will talk to you how I like." He replied making my temper rise.
A sudden movement in the corner of my eyes that made me look at the cage. A small black girl was holding a small metal rod trying to pick the lock on the cage.
"Anyway, I'll get a slave."
"What type?"
"What do you mean?"
"What gender?"
"Er, I don't know, I did not think of that."
"Ugh. Just choose already lady." He said annoyed.
My temper broke. "Why don't you shut up!" I yelled at him.
"No, you," He said calmly pulling out a whip.
I looked for something to defend myself with. Something, anything. All that I could see was the sea and a few rogue crabs. Wait, I thought, crabs are monsters, monsters of the seas. Keto, goddess of sea monsters. The perfect weapon, but so fragile, I needed a thicker, larger crab one with a thicker shell. Shell. The word echoed in my ears. Shells, sea shells, Phorcys old sea god, shells. For the first time in my life, I was glad to be the daughter of those two monsters. I was a demigod, no, I was a mortal, but not just any mortal, a mortal goddess. Quietly, I forced out my thoughts out to the crabs.
"Guess what?" I said to the jailor.
"What?" He asked lazily.
"Crab!" I yelled. That word summoned three crabs. The crabs were built up with sea shells to be about 5 meters tall.
The slaves and the jailor all cowered at the sight of the horrendous creatures.
"W- which one do you want?" For some reason I felt attached to the girl picking the lock, who now stood staring transfixed at the creatures.
"That one," I said pointing at her.
Once the girl was out of the cage, she stood, scared before me. For a moment I wondered what she was scared of, then I remembered. "Oh, those, they won't harm you." Cautiously, she moved around them.
When she was at my side, I willed the shells to break apart leaving three small crabs and a pile of mussel shells.
Grabbing the slaves hand, I turned around and walked away in pride.
