Chapter 32

NEW BEGINNING. NOT.

°°°°°

It's been months. Five months since KC's accident.  He's still in coma.

My parents had convinced me to rewrite JAMB and study in Nigeria since I didn't want to go back. You might think I was crazy. Hell, I was. I knew. I lost the opportunity to achieve my dreams. Kill me zii. I couldn't leave, though. Not when Kelechi was in that situation. He'd not woken up yet sef and I decided to wait.

Because I was ahead of the law students already, I put a direct entry into University of Lagos and I got accepted. My second year courses had started, and just like any other University in Nigeria, there were strikes.

Everyday during those five months, I made sure I went for morning mass or service in the Catholic Church closest to UNILAG to pray. After classes, I made sure to visit KC with Obia and Nene.

And everytime I did, I'd knock him on the head first, then sob till my eyes were swollen. Kelechi. Idiot.

I gathered my books and headed out of the hall. Nigerian courses were much easier than when I was abroad. Lecturers always referred students to me for tutoring and though it was tiring, it took my mind off him.

Gabriel left that day. He offered to pay the bills. You can imagine. I didn't have the strength to oppose because I wasn't even there when he said it or when he left. Richard and I still talked occasionally. Well, I didn't want to. I didn't know what to do okay? I felt like if I'd forget everything abroad then KC would wake up, but it wasn't working.

I'd say I was depressed. But me, depressed? Ha! You wish.

"Let's go to shoprite abeg," Obia said as she met me at our normal bus stop, "It's been long we had fun, Munachi."

"See, I'm not in the mood, Princess."

"I know it's because of Kelechi. I also feel that way, ehhn, you're not the only one. He's in coma, he's not dead. He won't die. I'm sure if he were here- what am I saying. We're talking like he's dead."

"Well-"

"And he's not," she said grabbing my hand, "that's why we're going to enjoy ourselves while shopping."

We entered a keke(tricycle) to ShopRite. I didn't have the strength to disagree with her, because Princess was really hard to argue with. You'd end up agreeing to whatever she said.

I closed my eyes for sometime. KC's not dead, yeah. He won't die, yeah. I need to accept the fact, yeah. My friends said I was getting boring. Trust me, I'm never boring. Was never boring.

"Smile," Obia said as she pinched my cheeks to make me smile. She laughed, "Chidinma is coming, too. Better don't sulk when we're together."

"Yes, ma," I said as I raised my hand to my head in a salute.

"Good." She put my hands in hers as we began to walk towards the direction of the mall.

"Suzzy!" I heard Princess scream as we were at the ShopRite entrance gate. Chidinma's English name was Suzzy and she preferred it. I hugged her tightly because I hadn't seen her since the past year.

"How have you been?" I asked after we pulled apart.

"I should be asking you," she said, "Princess told me you're sulking. Please, don't do that when I'm here," she joked.

"Hey! I'm not sulking. I've been fine. I'm fine. Just-let's go in, shall we?"

"Okay," they both answered.

We went through the main gate towards Shoprite itself. At first, we stopped at a make-up store to buy more make-up. There also, we did each other's make-up because our faces were bare. Princess forced me to. Such cruel world.

When we reached the game area, we played a lot of arcade games there as Suzzy thought she could beat me in all. Bummer, I won all. They both got annoyed with my gaming skills after that and decided to leave the game area. Good choice.

We walked toward KFC part to eat. I bought three buckets of chicken with fries for all of us. We're girls, I know, but when it comes to food, please don't call us that. We could eat the whole world if it was delicious except Princess. She was usually picky with food and that's why she's so thin. I've warned her to eat and grow like her younger sister, but she doesn't listen.

After finishing our buckets of chicken and carrying some takeaway, we finally left the vicinity as we has classes the next day. I had to tutor some people by five and it was fifteen minutes to five.

"Thanks for making me late guys," I said.

"I know you enjoyed yourself, biko(please)," Princess replied.

"Let's so this again, sometime. Seriously, we need to go out more often." Suzzy suggested.

"Sure," Obia Princess and I confirmed.

After we reached our campus bus stop, we all went towards the direction of our different hostels and lodge.

Thinking about the day, I smiled. I did have a lot of fun.

"Muna! Muna!" I heard. I looked towards the direction where my name was called. I saw a familiar face.

"Hi, Chuks."

"Hey. Um– I guess you forgot to tutor me today?"

"No, I didn't. I was just a little bit busy."

"Okay, no problem. Are you free now?"

"Yeah, why not."

"We can go to this cafe down the road. It has a nice library behind it. Maybe we could get the books we need then head to the cafe to study?"

"Not a bad idea at all."

We both went towards the said café after getting the books we needed. I had to read him some philosophy tips and philosophy was kinda hard to understand at first. I did teach him, and every time I said something, I'd ask if he understood while he nodded.

"So do you get it?"

"Yeah, sure. Philosophy is all about reading someone right? I'm good. I get it."

"That's not all I said, Chuks."

"I know, I know," he laughed, "I understand though."

"Alright, then, let's cont–"

"Munachi!" I looked at the person who suddenly burst into the café calling my name. Obia Princess.

"Get up here, idiot. KC's awake!"

Without a further glance at Chuks, I ran out the café took a tricycle with Obia and headed towards the hospital.

I'd never miss seeing him wake up. How will he feel the pain of my knock if I'm not there? Humph!
