Chapter 10

THE PARTY

★★★★★

Lisa and the guys decided to plan a party for me cause of my achievements... Yahh, you can imagine how that was an achievement. They said I had broken the school's record with Mr Link.

I felt so ehhn, happy, that I even started sweating with all the jumping around and the laughter and everything, till we started preparing for the party.

Word had already gone out that a Nigerian had beat the record in piano class and there was a party again at Richard's...

Lizzy, Sophia and I were in our dorm preparing as usual, but this time, Lizzy was the artist and I was the artwork while Sophie was the palette.

I couldn't imagine I allowed to be painted. I mean, I've never done this kind of thick makeup before, I never needed it cause I had a natural African beauty. But what surprised me is how they had my colour if concealer! How? Nice.

But still..this was a good day. 'I don't think so' my subconscious told me.

'Liar liar. Lie on,' I told my subconscious mentally. Yeah Matthew won't decieve me.

"Am I good or just too good?" Lizzy asked, more like a rhetorical question, when she looked at me through our mirror. She was done, finally. It took her a whole 30 minutes, 30 mintues! For make-up oo! Ha.

"Alright, alright. Jeez let's go. We're late." I said, grabbing my purse to leave.

"What? You're going to your party like that?" She said, motioning to my shorts and sweater.

What? Don't blame me, I don't have much taste in American fashion. And mama always told me I looked good in anything I wore so, I know she's right.

"See Lizzy Lizzy Lizzy, as you see me so, I don't have strength to change talk less of looking for a dress to wear, biko (please), let me just go like this."

"Look, babe you have to look cool. It's your day, c'mon. Sophie yo, look at this shit our babe's got here."

"Oooh Mona, won't you just erm... Change the sweater to something nice? Though I'd admit, you look hot girl!"

"Aww thanks so much sweetheart," I cooed.

Lizzy was getting jealous, I could tell. So I just laughed and decided to go with what she wanted.

Two stressful hours later of looking for a nice dress...

"Hey, guys guys, shhh settle down. This party, the whole reason we're gathered here is because...because of this beautiful girl right here. Wo..wo...woow" Michael slurred.

Something was off about him. He was either tipsy or drunk.

We arrived at the party a while ago, with your baby girl, me of course, in a dress that hung on my curves. Ahh come and see protest. It took my more than 30 minutes to agree to test the dress. Talk less of wearing it.

My ass was out, my huge sized boobs too, my hips, my flat stomach, too; you could literally see the real outline of my body.

Imagine me with that kind of clothes. I know you can, plus make-up. I felt I looked like a doll, just a beautiful one, like Michael said.

"You know, when I saw her...."he continued.

"Mike, yo! Michael. C'mon I don't want this," I said.

"You'll sure love it," he said loudly into the mic.

Richard was on the sofa, watching us from there. Did I tell you that his eyes had been on me since I entered the house, I mean, his house?

Every single move I made, I felt eyes on me. Even when a guy I'd never seen in my life asked me to the dance floor. What did you expect?

Ka! I accepted the offer but made sure he just danced oo but no touching or anything. But still he still had his eyes on me.

Even when Mike had asked me for a dance and now he's talking bout me, Richard still... Whatever, I don't care bout' that ass. He's not worth the attention.

"Damn, Mona? No, Muna? You are the most beautiful woman I'd ever laid my eyes on," now that caught my attention.

What? I looked over at Michael. He was probably drunk. He wouldn't remember a thing by tomorrow. This is ... can't be true.

"The first day I saw you in the front seats of literature class, I just.. couldn't stop thinking of you. Your hazel eyes, your lips, your dark but light skin, your fine hair that's not like ours, your Nigerian intonation, your sense of humor..? Damn, I just.."

No no no no no no! This is not happening.. how will I avoid this? How can I stop him?

"Mike, Michael stop talking nonsense," I tried to tell him.

"I'm being honest right now Mona, I mean Muna, you're... My day maker, the shooting star I see,  my...damn I can't even find the right words but.. I think I'm just gonna say it.. I love you." Ha!

I looked over at the couch where Richard was to ask for help but he wasn't there again. I turned to Lizzy to help me stop him but she was already in tears.. Sophie had gone God knows where with her boyfriend. Damn! So I'm stuck?

"... Will you be my girlfriend?"

The words I dreaded to hear. I'd never been asked this question and I'd never had to reply to anything like this. What was this? No? I can't deny. I can't accept either.

People will think I'm wicked if I reject him like this..no no no.

I looked at him and he had this drunk puppy eyes looking at me like he'd die if I gave him the wrong answer. He looked sad, dead, damn!

'What did I tell you bout today?' Matthew reminded me again.

I did the only thing a good person like me could only do...
