Chapter 23

JAILED FOR THROWING A PUNCH

I never imagined myself behind bars. I've always been an obedient girl while growing up, and as an aspiring lawyer, I tried my best to obey the law, but now, looking through the the space between the bars, I was forced to accept my fate.

"Look here officer, I'm gonna be a lawyer in six years time. I know my rights!"

"Tell that to the judge."

"What is wrong with this system? I accidentally hit a friend in the face and I get arrested?"

"That's a minor way to say 'assault'. Look, you can't go around punching Americans. Some of us are allergic."

Wow, racism. I almost believed that there was nothing like that here, since I hadn't fallen victim since I arrived.

"I can't believe you'd even be at work during Christmas. Won't your wife miss you?"

I had no idea what I was doing, but I couldn't just sit in a cell and do nothing. The officer was obviously not interested, but I had to keep trying.

"Hey, can't I call someone to bail me out? I know I have that right."

"Unfortunately, we don't give that to 'outsiders'."He did not just say that.I was gonna be stuck here? No.

To fill you in, I punched Richard on his face. It was totally an accident. He brought his face so close to me that when I opened my eyes his lips were wavering infront of me so I had to lay a punch. What happened with Gabriel can't repeat itself with someone else.

"Jeez Richard, you scared me to death," I said breathing heavily.

"Ouch. When did you learn how to throw a punch Mona?" He asked holding his already bloody noise to avoid any complications.

"At home. Self defense against armed robbers. I have pepper spray in purse too soooo... How's your nose? I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to."

"A few stitches and it'll be alri-,"

"Hands up," someone in blue uniform said, holding a gun to my face. Jesus Christ. I've not seen that gun before, it's a real beauty. How come it's not in Aba?

Oh yeah, someone is pointing a gun at me, "Sir?" I said trying to move closer just to view the brand of the gun, "Your gun is really nice, but why am I your target?"

"Put your hands behind your head."

"What?" I asked looking at Richard. I put my hands up just so that he'd see I had no weapon. I've watched a lot of movies like this. The Hate You Give is an example and I definitely don't want to end of like the guy.

"Hey officer, she's with me. There's no trouble here," Richard said.

"Sir, please step away from the lady."

"She's my friend officer, let it go. It was a mist-" A loud shot interrupted Richard's statement. The officer had fired a gun, but he pointed upwards which I thanked God for.

"I need backup, one man down with a bloody nose," the officer was saying into the walkee-talkee on his shoulder. He walked closer towards me and took both my hands and put them down behind my back. I heard the sound of the cuffs and soon I was dragged into the backseat of the police vehicle.

"Hey officer! This is against the law! You are arresting her unlawfully!" Richard shouted at the officer and moving his hands, but he brought it back to his nose when he noticed he had to do something about the bleeding. "Mona don't be scared. I'm coming to get you."

I looked through the window at him, with my cuffed hands infront of me waving at him. I can't tell if I'm scared or not, but I just don't want to be recorded as a criminal. Ever!

"Hey officer? Could you please change the station or put one of Billie Eilish's song?" I didn't get any response, "See, you've got to listen to 'Everything I wanted' or 'Bury a friend' but better off, 'Bad guy'. They're really cool songs. I could play it from my phone if you'd just remove these cuffs.

"Shut your fucking mouth young lady. You have to remain silent or I swear you won't see your head intact."

"Jeez, go fix your anger issues or something. I'm just trying to cheer you up, you look very sa-"

The officer packed the car somewhere and came to my side of the car. He opened the door and punched me right in the face. I could feel blood somewhere on my face, but I couldn't tell where. Why did he punch me? Shit, I forgot he's racist.

Even policemen can be racist? How can they arrest bad guys without being biased that blacks are the criminals? Racism is just the peak of stupidity. It's just like bringing eggs of different colors and breaking them, but you'd still find the same yolk and egg white inside.

When he started driving again I said, "Officer Rudolph, you really punch like a girl." I saw his name on his uniform.

I don't know what made me say that. I didn't know where the courage was coming from. I guess Richard's words 'Don't be scared' made me feel safe. But I was far from that.

The officer started driving recklessly so that I hit my head in the class several times. This gave me a chance to get my phone from my pocket, with my hands still cuffed and I put in video.

I've seen this once, it's good to video when a police officer is over stepping his boundaries.

"You really hate my guts huh? My nose hurts. I need to see a doctor."

"You don't know how to shut up, you animal? I'm going to make sure that no one will be able to bail you out. Not even the president! Ha! And guess what, you may give me a good fuck, won't you? Monkey?"

"If you love animals so much you can always go to Terrison Reservoir. They have the monkey that can give a good fuck," I couldn't believe my courage. It was getting out of control and I'd just anger him. But the video was still on, and I was streaming it live.

"Shut your goddamn mouth negro," he said and turned to spit at my face before facing the road. Ew ew ew!

I couldn't get it off my face, so I tried to focus my phone on my face, and immediately we came to a stop. The police station. That gets us to where we were before.

After hours of finally keeping quiet I couldn't take it anymore, "Rudolph don't you have to be somewhere right now? C'mon I won't run away."

"Sure," he said still reading the article from the newspaper.

"I'm starting to think you're enjoying my company."

"Fuck you, monkey."

"Of all the animals Rudolph? You know I'm finer than that."

"If you don't shut your mouth, I'd keep you here for life."

That shut me up for some minutes, but I got back on track. I can't be in prison for something I didn't do!

"Rudolph, I saw your wife on Saturday..." I said, trying to spice things up. God knows I don't even know his wife or what I'm saying.

"I'm not married, fucker."

"...with your two boys. They were at Central Park right?"

He dropped the newspaper immediately and looked at me, "How the fuck did you know that?"

He just gave himself away. Ha! I just guessed that a man like him would have two sons and turns out it's true! Yes, I guessed correctly!

"Patricia is a friend," I said, hoping he knew someone by the name. A lot of people here answer that name so I just guessed, again.

"What?! She'd never talk to a negro. How the fuck do you know my wife's name?" Lord thank you! It's his wife's name oo.

"We met at Grand Supermarket when I went to buy some Christmas decorations with a friend. Turns out we wanted the last Christmas tree so I allowed her to take it," I said nonchalantly, but praying to God that his wife brought a Christmas tree home.

"Why am I talking to you, monkey? I'll just call her and ask if she met a negro."

"I don't think she'd tell you. She knows you're racist doesn't she? She'd be scared if you knew she met me won't she? Just let me have my call and I won't tell her about the fucking me part."

"You bastard,", he came closer to the cell to punch me but I moved back in time and he hit the iron bar, "Fuck!" He swore, again. I wonder how his children will be.

"Oops," I sneered. "Just a call."

"One call and that's it," he said, unlocking the cell, to get me a telephone.

I had to make a call to someone who won't ask a lot of questions. I can't obviously call Lida or her husband. Richard still has a bloody nose and Lizzy will be too tired to drive here or low on cash to bail me out. Gabriel. He's the last person and the only person that can get me out without worries.

"You have 20 minutes to hold that phone. 5 minutes' gone already."

"Hey."

"Who is thi-"

"It's Mona, Gabriel, I'm in the police station."

"What are you doing in a pol-"

"I need you to come bail me out please, I don't know who else to call and I don't have much time left."

"Which station? I'm coming to get you."

"The one at Goldstone street. Please don't tell anyone."

"Sure. I'm on my way. Hold on Mon-"

"Times up monkey. Guess your momma ain't coming right?" He dragged the phone and tried an African American accent. It wasn't even up to 10 minutes!

"Actually, I just called Gabriel Wilson. The heir to Wilson Corp."

"You dare lie with the Wilson name monkey? Ha! You make me laugh. Media says he never gives out his personal phone number, you still want to lie?"

"What? I just called him, I ain't lying."

He just kicked me on my leg, hard, and I fell down. "That's for using my wife's name to threaten me."

I couldn't help but whimper at the pain. Gabriel better get here fast, please. I'll forgive him if he comes in the next fiv-

"Mona! Mona! Where are you?!" Gabriel came into the police station. I could hear his voice from inside the cell since it wasn't far from the reception and he was loud. "Look here officer, I am Gabriel Wilson and if you don't bring out Mona out here you're badges would be going to a waste bin!"

Officer Rudolph heard the commotion and decided to check it out, but immediately he left, he was back and he opened the cell and I came out, "Monkey, you didn't tell me you knew Wilson's boy." Ha!

"You called her a monkey?" Gabriel stepped in, then looked at me, "What the hell happened to your face Mona? Did he hurt you? Did he say anything?"

I just starred at him cause I was just happy to have a familiar face around. This , also, wasn't the Gabriel I knew. This one was screaming power and rich just by looking at him and Gabriel never lost his cool, but I finally nodded.

"I'll get her cleaned up, but pack your things before my men get here. You're not fit to be a cop."

Gabriel dragged me out of the station and into his BMW. We didn't saw a word to each other till he reached his destination. It was a small duplex which was beautiful despite its size.

"You didn't want Lida to know so I arranged a place for you to clean up. I'd pick you up in the next hour. I'm sorry for that episode in the station too," he said.

"Thank you, Gabriel." He was about to get back into the car when I called out for him again. I made sure to look into his eyes, "Can you stay?" I pleaded. I couldn't stay here alone.

"I guess," he said, and closed the door. We both walked inside the duplex side by side with the atmosphere still tense. I just wondered if I'd caused more damaage to our friendship.

So, because of the recent protest in America due to the murder of George Floyd, I decided to make up a chapter concerning racism.

I guess it's even harder for blacks to be safe anywhere that's not Africa. Racism is really not a good thing at all, because we are all God's children. We came from the same place and we'd still go back to the same place.

The fact that I have dark skin and you have fair skin doesn't give you an edge over me. We're still equal. Still dust.

We just need to love 💕

And I love everyone out there, blacks like me and Whites, Olive skinned people, brown skinned people, albinos, no matter the colour of your skin,

Munaloves y'all ❤
