Chapter 5: you can rest now

Y/n p.o.v.

I woke up to the sound of a dog barking. A familiar kind and it made me feel at home, safe in a way. I wanted to get up but got pushed back down by Wilson. He looked scared and wasn't happy with the noise at all. Due to the events from yesterday, I couldn't blame him. "Hounds again." He whispered with a hint of fear in his voice. I couldn't help myself but I had to see if he was right. "Y/n get back here!" Wilson said a bit louder but still afraid of the thing outside the tent. Trying to pull you back down, but ending up hurting himself instead. He flinched and pulled his wounded arm back. Holding it close to his body and made a few groans in pain. "Stop it y/n!" You ignored his warning and replied. "Trust me it's not dangerous just take some rest you need it." Returning the words he once said with a smug grin on your face. The scientist wasn't pleased with the fact that you didn't listen and showed this attitude. "Now stop being reckless and get back over here!" He was stressed out thanks to your stubborn ass.

Once you peeked outside the tent you felt a warm breath on your face. Squinting your eyes because the bright sunlight blinded you for a second. Another loud bark left the creature's mouth and it happily licked your face. "Son of a bitch!" You yelled out while falling back in the tent. "Y/n! What is going on!?" With a grunt, you dropped on top of Wilson with your back. He managed to get up a little before and you landed on his chest while he sat down. Both of you startled by the sudden event. Staring at each other in a short and uncomfortable moment. The dog jumped in the tent on top of both of you. Planting both paws in your stomach. "Ouch-!" You shot up and pushed the exciting fluffy mess away from you. By doing so you felt a note on their collar, taking it off and examining it. Trying to decipher what it said but concluding that it was too dark in the tent to read it. "Y/n are you okay?" The British accent from the man behind you was pretty obvious at this point. "Yeah I'm good, are you okay Will?" You laughed a little while the dog licked your face. Facing Wilson with a smile.

Wilson p.o.v.

I melted a little when I heard their laughter and saw their smile. Again they gave me the nickname. "Well, it still hurts but it is not that bad anymore for now at least. So no need to worry about me." Shrugging it of hoping they wouldn't be too concerned about my condition. Y/n was still cuddling with the dog and giving them kisses on the head. The two seemed to know each other for a long time. Y/n gave a sigh and a stern look knowing I wasn't telling them everything. "Tell me the truth, Will. Be honest with me." They managed to get me silent for a moment. "Isn't this your dog named D/N you mentioned yesterday?" I asked trying to change the subject.

(I've decided that you can have your name for the dog if you don't know anything just keep it as it was, Shelly.)

"Yes, it is! Now that you say it I recognize her. Already did with the barks that's why I got up in the first place." They said while walking outside to the empty campfire pit. I followed them and covered my face due to the bright light. Using my arm to stop the sun from blinding my eyes. It wasn't nice for me to see Y/n giving all the attention to D/n. Was I starting to get jealous of the dog? How in the name of science could I be jealous of a dog that gets more attention than me? It's just a dog Higgsbury get yourself together. I tried to ignore the feeling but it was difficult for me not to. The dog ran towards me and I gave a slight scream. She jumped against my leg and barked. "It doesn't bite, does it?" I asked a little afraid to touch her. Since other dog-like creatures were the reason I couldn't use my right arm at the moment. "Oh... No D/N would never do that. But I could." Y/n gave me a grin and lifted their eyebrows up and down. I felt my cheeks warm up and I turned away from them. Hiding my face behind the door of the icebox. Searching for something we could eat and as an excuse to hide my face from them. "Would you like some eggs and bacon for breakfast?" I asked Y/n. Receiving a shrug and reply: "Sure food is food."

~insert a wibbely wobbely timey whimey skipey here~

It has been almost a week now since Y/n and I met. We've been getting closer and gotten more open to each other. Their hand was already fully healed my arm wasn't but it was getting better every day. Y/n was helping me with taking care of it and I knew I had no chance of stopping them. Their dog was okay but I still didn't feel comfortable around them. We had been preparing ourselves for the winter by collecting food, silk, wood and beefalo fur. The camp had a few upgrades in the meantime as well. Now we had two crockpots, four drying racks, and a few extra chests. The base was still not that big but it was cozy in a way. A few stubbles had grown on my face during all of it. It was midday and I leaned with my back against a tree reading the journal. Y/n said it was from their uncle but I couldn't believe it, the author seemed stuck in their research. Like I used to have with all of my science projects. Why would they stop it all of a sudden? It was like the author lost it. I knew if I possed so much research like this I wanted to protect it with my life. "Still reading the book nerd?" Y/n ruffled through my hair making it even more of a mess than usual. They always knew how to sneak up behind me. "Yes I am! And what did I tell you about my hair!?" I yelled annoyed closing the journal with a sigh. Trying to fix the hopeless mess that it was. They rolled their eyes and walked away from me.

Y/n p.o.v.

Geez, Wilson could be such a drama queen when it comes to his hair but you couldn't help yourself. It was funny to startle him and his hair was super soft. You made your way back to the base to prepare yourself for a hunt. "You've tried hm?" You chuckled and went back to the preparations. "Yes, I did." Wilson scoffed and crossed his arms. For as far he could, the man kept opening his wound since he didn't wanna rest. His hair was still in his usual shape only looking more fluffier. Like when he would wake up. You had to admit it that it was pretty cute. "Are you sure you want to go out for a hunt on your own. I don't have a good feeling about this." He was worried and seemed to have a nasty gut feeling. You grabbed his shoulders and smiled. "Hey if you feel better about it you can come with me. Just don't do something stupid and open your arm again okay?" Hugging him and patting his back. "No, no I need to stop worrying about you. You're an adult and you can handle it on your own, just be back before it's dawn." He held you tight and let you go after a few seconds. You still haven't told him about the note on D/N collar. It was from Maxwell and it said: 'since you miss your precious D/n so much here she is. It might be helpful that they can see ghosts.' It made you feel bad and you should'ved thrown it in the fire already. "See you later nerd." Packed with a knife, a backpack and a spear in your hand you sprinted into the woods.

The shadow of the trees covered you while you were kicking a few rocks away in disappointment because you didn't even found a rabbit. Sighing because you wasn't planning on going back empty handed. Out of now where the sound of a beefalo could be heard. Approaching the new biome looking for the beast. Sprinting towards it and hiding behind a berry bush. It was one separated from the herd. This was perfect. Dropping your backpack on the ground. You mentally prepared yourself for the kill by getting up, watching every movement and be alerted at every noise. "Finally! Something exciting! Isn't it mrs/ mr Y/L?" A loud clap behind your back could be heard. This caused you to almost drop the spear and holding on to it tighter. The voice of the oh so annoying prick... "Maxwell!? you asshole!" Pointing your spear at his throat and gritting your teeth. "If I where you I wouldn't waste my weapon on an old weak shadow man." Pushing the spear away with the tip of his finger. "But rather aiming it at your prey." He made you point at the bizon like creature that was now storming towards you with rage. "You pathetic fu-" before you knew it the douche had already dissapeared. "Go to hell old man." Mumbling softly and bracing yourself for the impact.

(So a little heads up things are going to get bloody here. When it is over I'll notify you when it is safe again.)

Using the spear to dodge the beast right on time, the cars in the city reminded you a little of this. Running away to create space between you two. The beefalo rammed his head against the tree and was stunned for a moment. You saw the opportunity to attack since he was weak for a moment. Planning to hit him right in the throat. This wasn't the case since the beefalo moved wildly around and ending up with your spear in it's shoulder. His horn ended up in yours making you scream out in agony. The sound made it ten times worse of how your flesh was getting penetrated by the wildlife. Cracking a bit of the bone as well. You ripped the weapon out of the thing that roared in pain grabbing it's horn and pulling it out of your shoulder. Without hesitation you stabbed it in the throat over and over again. Blood poured out of your shoulder and the beast his neck. The beefalo dropped on the ground and you kept hitting it. Making sure it was death while the ground colored red and became a soggy mess. Panting tired and leaning on your spear. The scene of a tired and broken human with a beefalo corpse next to it made the old man on his throne smile in a sadistic way. Knowing what was about to happen made him enjoy it even more. A quick reflex made you look behind you another beelfo had stormed up behind you. The nasty sound of cracking and other horrible noises filled your ears when one of the horns pierced through your stomach. It cracked a few of your ribs and his horn was stuck. Gasping for air and struggling to hit the beast. Squinting your eyes filled with tears. This pain was horrible never before have you felt so helpless, weak and afraid. The animal threw you in the air, making you hit a tree a few meters away. Falling limb on the ground unable to move an inch. A puddle of blood formed around your body.

(It is safe here again. Long story short you managed to kill one, but got pierced in your chest by another beefalo. Yeeting you against a tree. And Now you lay in front of it slowly dying.)

This is it. This is how you were going to die. Staring at the sky and hearing someone screaming your name in the distance. The beefalo was killed after a short fight with your savior. You felt someone trying to pick you up which made you whimper and tear up. The pain was to much so he only held your head up. Nothing could help you anymore and you accepted it. "W-Will is t-that you?" Lifting up your hand which he grabbed and held tight. "Y-yes it's me Y/n. It's me, I'm here okay it's gonna be okay." The man buried his face in your shoulder that wasn't hurt. In hopes of calming himself down to take deep breathes while gripping your hand firmly. Trying hush him a bit between your coughs but made him stress out even more. "Promise me that you won't hurt yourself. Don't do anything stupid and that you don't starve. You got that... Sweetie?" His body was shaking violently and it took time for him to calm down. His eye's were watery and he still tried his best to act tough, but when you called him sweetie it made things even worse for him. Slowly letting your head rest on the floor and taking your hand in both of his. "Hey, Y/n look at me." He spoke soft and gentle. You felt your conscious slipping away and that your grip loosened. "It... I-it is okay. You can rest now. I-I'll be fine I promise." Giving you a weak smile before you passed out. Letting his hand go but he kept holding on to yours. Wilson sat next to your body in silence before hiding his face in your shoulder again and bawling his eyes out. Blaming himself for your death and dropping the tough man act. He was broken because the only one in this world who kept him company was dead thanks to him. Knowing very well that he lied to you by saying that he would be fine. Thats when the first snowflakes fell from the sky on his yet black hair. Winter was going to be even colder than usual for him.
