Chapter 19: The Calm Before the Storm

You lounged on the couch, flipping channels aimlessly.  Your legs were across Will's lap.  You tried to keep your attention on the TV, but your eyes kept wandering back to Will's face.  He was staring staunchly ahead, avoiding your gaze.  You had caught him reading that old book again and he had refused to say a word when you confronted him directly.

Bill wandered into the room, his sleeve rolled up and the tattoo exposed.  "Okay, I give up.  What exactly is this weird thing supposed to be?  Some sort of... rainbow pop-tart cat?  What does that even mean?"

You cracked up.  "It's called nyan cat."  You pulled up a reference image on your phone to show him.  "It's a bit of an outdated meme, but I think that makes it more funny."

"What does it even mean?  Is it a satanic symbol or magic emblem of some kind?" he asked hopefully.

"Well, it's a viral meme, but otherwise... Nope.  Just a rainbow pop-tart cat."  You and Will were both laughing now.  Bill covered his free eye with his hand.

"I hate you both."

"Love you too," you called at his retreating back.  He paused, half looking back at you, then left the room.  Will glanced at you, meeting your eyes for the first time in hours.

"Love you too," you said again, leaning over and pecking him on the cheek.  Instead of smiling like you'd expected, he looked down.  What was that expression?  Guilt?  You sat back, dissatisfied, and went back to channel surfing.

What is he hiding from me?  What secrets are they both keeping?

Something occurred to you.  "I wonder if the tattoo will appear in the Dreamscape.  Will it show up on his triangle form?"

Will looked up again, snickering.  "I hope so."

"I heard that!" Bill yelled from the other room.  You both chuckled, and the moment of awkwardness was over.

You spent the day in companionable silence.  Bill came in again and you all watched Ghost Harassers together, mocking the inaccuracies to real-life supernatural beings.  You ended up with your head on Bill's shoulder, your legs still across Will's lap.

You were so comfortable you could have fallen asleep, until your phone rang.  You pulled it out of your pocket and sighed heavily.

Call from: Dad

"Wonder what he wants," you muttered, standing up.  "He's not one to call just for small talk."

"I-is everything okay?" Will asked, looking at you with mild concern.  You frowned at your phone, which was still ringing.

"Probably, but you never know with him.  I never can tell what he's thinking.  Sort of like you two lately," you smiled faintly, trying to make light of the uncomfortable atmosphere.

"What do you mean by that?" Bill asked suspiciously.

"I don't know what that weird book is Will's reading, or who Bill's talking to late at night, but I'm sure you both have good reasons.  I'm going to take this outside," you said distractedly, answering your phone and stepping out the door.  You saw Bill and Will look at each other sharply, but your dad was already on the line and you were too preoccupied to think much about it.  You walked down the hall, pacing near the elevator as you talked.

Your dad wanted you to make arrangements to come home for Christmas in a month.  He didn't ask how you'd been, or if you'd made any friends (or had two demon roommates), but he felt he was doing his fatherly duty by having you come home for the holidays.

Great.  Awkward dinner parties in fancy clothes and stilted conversation, you thought to yourself as you mechanically talked through the details with your father.  As soon as you'd agreed on the plans, you both hung up without a goodbye.  You leaned against the wall for a moment, taking a deep breath.  Talking to him is draining for some reason.  I wonder how I'll break the news to the boys.  Well, I've been living with them for nearly a year and only took one vacation.  They'll live.

You made your way back to your apartment, just outside the door when you heard a crash from inside.  You threw the door open to find Bill and Will on the floor, hands locked around each other's throats.

Your first thought was that Bill had attacked Will, but Will was fighting back with equal vehemence.  You stood frozen for a moment as they scuffled, then leaped forwards.

"You guys!" you shrieked, panic raising your voice by an octave.  "Break it up!  What is going on here!?" You forced them apart, one hand on each of them.  They looked like they were both about to tackle the other at any second.

They both spoke at once, yelling over the other so you couldn't understand a word.  You tried to shush them, but they were both so agitated they didn't listen.

"GUYS!" you shouted finally.  "SHUT UP FOR TWO SECONDS!"

They both cut off, startled.  "Now," you said in a quiet, firm tone.  "Tell me, one at a time, exactly what is going on here."

"He's trying to turn you into a demon!" Will blurted, half a second before Bill shouted, "He's trying to turn himself into a human!"

"I said one at a time!" you snarled.  "WHAT!?"

"Bill's trying to turn you into a demon!" Will yelled again.

"Will's trying to turn himself into a human!" Bill yelled, louder.

You backed up from them both, hands outstretched, either to calm them or in self-defense even you didn't know.

"...What?" you whispered in the quietest of voices.  You suddenly felt crushed and freezing, like you were still sinking to the bottom of the glowing well.  "You're... what?... why?"

"So we can be together!" they yelled simultaneously, in desperate voices, then turned on each other again.  You stood, stunned, too shocked to stop them from fighting or even to find your voice.

The crash of a lamp shocked you back to yourself.  "And you were going to tell me this... when?  Either of you?" your voice started out as a whisper, but had raised to a shout by the end.  They both froze, looking at you with identical scared expressions that told you all you needed to know.

"Right.  Not until it was too late."  Will's hands were covering his face now, knees drawn up.  Bill stood up, taking half a step towards you.  You jerked backwards, raising a warning hand.

"Don't you dare.  Either of you.  You can't just... How could you even think... without even asking what I wanted..." your breath shuddered.  You couldn't even pinpoint your own emotions beyond the overwhelming desire to escape, to extricate yourself from the situation and retreat to a place of safety to sort out your feelings.

You backed towards the door, looking at them both like they were wild animals, unpredictable and dangerous.  Will stood up, hesitantly stepping towards you as well, but you shot him a venomous glare.

"I said don't!  You two are just... despicable!  I can't even look at you right now!" you shrieked, throwing yourself into the hallway and slamming your own front door on them.  You sprinted out of your building and down the street, not even knowing where you were going but needing to get as far from those lying demons as you possibly could.  Their expressions, desolate and desperate, were burned into your mind as you found yourself in the forest, still running at top speed.  branches whipped your face and tears stung your eyes, but you didn't slow down.

Abruptly the trees ended and you found yourself at the edge of a cliff.  You stumbled to a stop, noticing the waterfall nearby.  Your legs buckled and you sat down hard.

What have they done? You asked yourself.  What do I do now?  I should have known that was their goal... They both wanted me all to themselves.  All I wanted was to live alone... I never asked to get caught up in a... love triangle!

Abruptly you found yourself laughing hysterically, that particular pun not having occurred to you before.  Just as suddenly, you stopped laughing.

Will... He wants to sacrifice everything for me... Would I have let him?  Could we have a life together if he turned himself human?  And Bill... He wants to give me everything... Would I let myself be turned into a demon to be with him?

Does it even matter?  The problem is that neither of them said a word to me.  They were going to do this without even asking me.  Would I have chosen between them, if they'd asked?  Could I even make that choice?  You couldn't imagine living without either of them anymore.  All you wanted was the life you'd had for the past year, living contented with them both.  I don't even know if I can have that anymore.  Everything's ruined now.

"Sounds like you're in a bind," you heard a voice from behind you.  You sprang to your feet and whirled around, wiping the tears out of your eyes with one hand.

"What?" you snapped, taking a look at the stranger.  He was wearing a black tuxedo, with the top hat and cane you'd come to associate with demons, but no eye patch.  He strolled towards you nonchalantly.

"I could hear the whirlwind of your thoughts from all the way in the Dreamscape," the stranger said casually.  "You sound rather desperate.  And I thrive on desperation," he continued, sweeping his hat off his head and giving you a low bow.

"So... shall we talk about a deal?"
