Chapter 60: The Real Deal

Despite the danger the three of his pups were in right now, Ryder's heart was inflated when Marshall suddenly called just moments ago. He didn't know what happened or where the pup even was, but Marshall to him seemed to be fully realized in the call. He hoped it was true, especially right now, since they were now in a dire situation that only Marshall could get them out of.

"Ryder! What are you smiling about?!" Mayor Goodway cries out. "Do you have a plan?!"

"No, not yet, but I soon will." Ryder smirks at her.

"Ry-Ryder. I don't want to doubt you or anything, but we may not have all the time in the world." Goodway points out, while she places a hand on her forehead. "Oh we are doooomed!"

"Ryder. I've got my copter ready for extract! Just give me the word!" Skye announces, running up to him.

Ryder looks to his pilot with the same smile. "Hold up on that Skye, you may not have to fly at all."

Skye screeches to a halt in confusion. "Wha? What do you mean Ryder?"

As soon as she asks that, the distant sound of Zuma's hovercraft rose slightly, commanding everyone's attention to it. Everyone in the area seem to gasp all at once as they realize who was driving it. Then a lone voice breaks the ghostly silence.

"It-It's Marshall! Marshall's here!"

The voice belonged to Julie, which leads everyone into a thunderous mix of shocking cheers for the pup. The mayor's eyes shot wide, rubbing them in disbelief while Skye snaps her head like a bird to Ryder.

"Ryder? What's going on?!" Skye exclaims.

"Marshall's here to help Skye, and not a moment too soon." Ryder joyfully says with a grin from ear to ear.

Marshall drives up to them, seemingly unaffected by the crowd, stopping the craft roughly in front of Ryder, the Mayor, and Skye. He jumps out and stands front and center of them.

"Marshall here Ryder and I'm fired up!" Marshall proudly sounds off with a big smile.

"Mar-Marshall?! But....h-how? You...you were...but...wait!" Mayor Goodway tried to process the anomaly in front of her, but only seemed to get more and more confused. "I....I....whoa."

The mayor starts to fall until Ryder catches her. "Easy there Mayor Goodway."
"But.....I-I don't understand...how can Marshall be...." The mayor weakly lets out, fanning her face.

"Breathe mayor, breathe. I need you back to earth." Ryder says while supporting her. "Marshall's alive and here. That's all you need to know right now."

"But...but...I....I need to sit down." Mayor Goodway stutters, still processing everything.

Ryder helps the mayor down to the ground, making sure she doesn't hurt herself. "Okay Mayor. Take all the time that you need."

"What's the situation Ryder! Where's Chase, Zuma, and Rubble?" Marshall asks with a determined manner.

Ryder turns his attention to Marshall. "It's not good to hear buddy. Chase, Zuma, and Rubble are all trapped inside with some students and a teacher."

"What's their location?" Marshall pressed with a serious tone.

Ryder was a little surprised at Marshall's effort to keep cool. Knowing he was worried for his friends and the victims, but that's what Marshall does best, and Ryder couldn't be more relieved. "They're in room 225 on the second floor. Blocked in by a big pile of debris. According to Chase, Zuma is out cold and Mrs. Heather is in critical condition."

"Marshall?" During Ryder's prompt briefing, Julia, the mayor's niece, somehow made her way up to Marshall without them noticing. The dalmatian turns to the girl who was unsure at who she was looking at. "Is...it really you?"

Marshall gives her a friendly smile. "Yeah. It's me Julia."

Julia didn't smile back as tears were in her eyes. "Then, you've got to save my brother. You've got to rescue him."

Marshall hugs the crying child. "You don't have to be scared Julia. I'll save him. I'll get everyone out so you can see your brother again."

"Y-You promise?" Julia murmurs.

Marshall lets go and gazes into her eyes. "I promise."

Julia remains silent but gave the dalmatian a faithful smile, before Marshall shifts focus to the smoking school in front of them.

Ryder then says to him "Whatcha thinking Marshall?"

Marshall doesn't take his eyes off the building. "Well, believe it or not, the fire doesn't look so bad. It's probably trying to make it's way through the building. Which means we may have a little more time than we thought. What room are they in again?"

"Room 225, on the second floor." Ryder quickly answers.

"Interesting." Marshall says as he seemed to be coming up with a plan.

"What do you want us to do Marshall?" Skye asks.

The dalmatian smiles. "To be honest, nothing. I'll take care of it."

Before Ryder and Skye could question, Marshall runs over to his firetruck where Rocky was currently using it to douse flames on the outside.

"Oh, hi Marshall. When did you..." Rocky stammers, surprised to see Marshall of all pups.

Marshall swings his head. "Rocky, out! Need my truck."

Rocky quickly scrambles out. "Uh su-sure pal."

Marshall gets in and wastes no time in driving around and backing up to a specific spot of the building.

"Ruff! Ladder up!" Marshall barks as the ladder shoots up to a window above.

Ryder and Skye runs up to the truck as Marshall starts to climb up.

"Marshall! Where are you going?!" Ryder calls out.

"What's it look like? I'm going into the building to rescue my friends!" Marshall replies with a goofy smile.

"Ummm, No you're not! Your in no way prepared for what's in there!" Ryder rebutted. "You still have the virtual suit on for crying out loud!"

Marshall looks down at the vest he had on from his training session. "Oh. I see. Well. I'm just going to have to make do."

"Are you crazy Marshall?! It's way to dangerous in there!" Skye yelps. "You haven't even told us what you're going to do!"

"I'm fully aware of the danger Skye, but suited up or not, I'm going in there. I'm really the only one who can get in and save them!" Marshall argued.

"There's no doubt about that Marshall, but you're not thinking clearly!" Ryder pushes back. "You don't even have a helmet on! Please listen to me!"

"I am listening to you Ryder, but I need to do this, and I have no time to...." Marshal bows his head, then raises it back up with determination. "I will make sure everyone gets out. I promise Ryder."

Ryder slowly in response, walks up to the cab of the truck and looks Marshall in his blue eyes. "That's what you said the last time, Marshall." Ryder then places a hand on the dalmatian's cheek. "Please, Marshall.....I don't want to lose you again."

Marshall raises a paw and slowly pushes it Ryder's hand away while showing some sorrow with the determination. "I know I did Ryder, but trust me..... I won't make the same mistake. I'll get out this time."

Ryder looks at his pup's determination, admiring how vibrant it was an how it would've convinced him had it not been for the last time Ryder sent him a burning building. But like it or not, he needed Marshall for this mission, and it seemed that the pup had a sure plan to save everyone. The more he argued, the more time ticked for Chase, Zuma, Rubble, and everyone else.

"Okay Marshall. I trust you, just please get out this time." Ryder sighed. "I don't know what I or anyone will do if we lose you again. Just one thing..." Ryder takes off his own fire helmet he had on and places it on Marshall's head while also giving him a spare oxygen mask. "Take these in there with you, so you at least have some sort of protection."

Marshall warmly smiles at Ryder as he takes the mask and firmly puts it on, before he grabs a hatchet from his truck and trotted up to the window.

"What are you doing anyway Marshall?" Skye asks.

Marshall looks at Skye down below. "Everyone is trapped in the room from one way, so I'm going to make a way out from the other side!"

"I see. So your going to get into the room 216 and tear down the wall the get them out that way?" Ryder deduced.

"Yep!" Marshall nods before he gets a firm grip on the hatchet and easily breaks the window, allowing him entry into the school.

Ryder chuckles. "Now why didn't I think of that? Guess that's why Marshall's such a good fire pup."

"But Ryder, he's going to have a heck of a time tearing down that wall with that puny little axe." Skye points out.

Ryder cups his chin at Skye's statement. She was undoubtedly right, with the little hatchet he had, it could take Marshall hours to axe it down.

Then, with a snap of his fingers, Ryder had a idea. "Aha! I got it!"

"What is it Ryder?" Skye asked.

Ryder whips out his pup pad. "It may take Marshall hours, but it'll take Rubble seconds!"

"Oh! That's right! I forgot Rubble was in there!" Skye yipps. "Good thinking Ryder!"

With that Ryder swipes over to Rubble's emblem and calls him. "Rubble? How's it going?"

"Not very much Ryder. I'm having a hoot of a time with this pile. My jackhammer is just not cutting it!" Rubble whimpered. "N-No pun intended."

"It's all good Rubble, because I need you to stop what you're doing right now." Ryder replies.

"Stop what I'm doing? But Ryder, this is our only way out!" Rubble contested.

"No. it is not your only way out. Marshall is on his way from the other side to tear down the wall."

"Wait, Marshall? Did you just say Marshall is on his way to us?!" Chase sounds from the call, having heard the conversation.

"Indeed Chase. He's here, and he's about to start breaking down the wall on the other side of the room. I need you to help him get it down with your jackhammer."

"Ryder this is no time for a joke like...."

Suddenly, a loud thump was heard from the room, repeating as the children started to scream from the noise, scaring Rubble.

"Ryder! The building's bout to come down!" Rubble wails.

"That's not the building Rubble, that's Marshall!" Ryder corrects. "Get over there and help him so you all can get out!"

Rubble nods vibrantly. "Yes Ryder!"

Marshall was right with his assumption that the fire hadn't taken over the second floor yet, and Marshall was easily able to get into room 216 and start chopping away at the wall. That being apparent, it was a little weird how the roof of the school was already crumbling in the first place considering the fire was relatively weak on the second floor. But that thought wasn't important now, as his friends were very high on his priorities.

A few more hacks though and Marshall started to feel a little winded. He didn't really think about how hard it would be and how long it would take for the for him to break the wall down, but he needed to keep going so everyone could get out safe and sound.

RATATATATATATATAT

"Yipe!" Marshall jumps at the sudden rattling sound bursting into his ears. "Oh no! The building's coming down! I gotta get this wall down before..." Before he could finish, the wall falls down in front of him, revealing Rubble with his jackhammer, along with Chase and the kids who's eyes immediately bugs them second they see the dalmatian.

Marshall chuckles at the relieving sight. "oh he he. It's just Rubble's jackhammer."

"Marshall!" Marshall hears Alex yell out as he runs up to him. He starts to sob a little, giving the dally a big hug. "Marshall! It's you! It really is you! You're alive!" Alex sobbed in overwhelming joy, gripping the dalmatian's neck for dear life. The kids then huddle around him some with tears in there eyes in pure disbelief while others were cheering with joy that their hero has returned. "H-How?"

Marshall had to maneuver his head a little to keep himself form being strangled by Alex's grip. "It's nngh, a long story Alex."

Alex realized what he was doing and let's go, allowing Marshall to catch his breath. "S-Sorry."

"It's all good Alex." Marshall puffed. "It's good to see you too." He then looks to the rest of the kids. "All of you."

Chase then emerges through them and a confusing look turns into a look of delight. "Marshall? What are you doing here?"

Marshall formed a toothy smile "I'm here to save your sorry tail silly."

"Ye-Yeah. I can guess that." Chase replies as he stares at the dalmatian for a second, his beaming manner growing brighter and brighter.

Marshall then spots Mrs. Heather slumped down on a wall away from them. His smile vanishing instantly as he blows by Chase. "Oh no! Mrs. Heather!"

Marshall runs up to the downed teacher and instantly checks for vital signs. Though it was difficult to check her fully without his pup pack, He thanks puppy heaven that she was still alive.

The kids all join him with concern. "Marshall! Is she okay?! Is Mrs. Heather okay?!" Julius frantically asks.

Marshall turns to them, serious as a heart attack. "She's alright everyone, but not for long. We've got to get her out of here and some medical attention pronto!"

"I'll help Marshall!" Julius calls out in response.

"Yeah, me too!" Alex joins. "Mrs. Heather saved us, now we've got to save her!"

One by one, the students all sound off in agreement with their fellow classmates for the sake of their own teacher.

"That's great, because you all are going to have to carry her out of here."

The kids wasted no time in helping each other assist the critically injured woman. It took a good number of them to make sure they weren't dragging her across the floor.

"Chase!" Marshall calls.

Chase goes up to Marshall. "Yeah Marshall?"

"We can't hang here for long, in need you and Rubble to help guide them over to the ladder." Marshall says. "It's propped up under the window across from here."

"What about you? What are you going to do?" Chase asks.

Marshall eyes Zuma who was still out cold on the ground. "I'll take care of Zuma. We'll be right behind you, now go!"

"Of course buddy!" Chase salutes before going on after the kids. "Okay you all, listen up! Follow me to the ladder as best as you can!"

While that was taken care of, Marshall runs over to the downed lab who fortunately was finally starting to stir. Marshall gently shakes him.

"Zuma. Zuma! Wake up man. This is no time to be sleeping, you silly pup." Marshall teased.

The stirs gradually turn into moans until Zuma slowly opens his eyes and blinks a couple times.

"Ma-Mawshall?" Zuma groggily mumbles.

"Hey man. You ready to get out of-oof!"

Zuma suddenly hugged him and started to bawl right in his ear. "MAWSHALL! I'M SO SOWWY! I DIDN'T MEAN OF THOSE NASTY THINGS I SAID! PLEASE DON'T HATE ME MASHALL! I LOVE YOU DUDE! I LOVE YOOOOOOU!"

"Zuma! Zuma!" Marshall pushes back and tries to calm him. "Zuma, there's no time for this!"

"But I'm sowwy Mawshall! I'm really sowwy!" Zuma cries. "Do you believe me?!"

"I'll believe you when you're safe, now come on!" Marshall jolts the lab up and Zuma instantly runs towards the door, only to stop when he realized that it was blocked by a pile of debris.

"Not that way Zuma! The other way; through the hole in the wall!" Marshall corrects.

Zuma turns and sees the hole and cocks his head. "When did that get hewe?"

Marshall stands beside it, waiting for Zuma to go first. "Don't question it, just go!"

Zuma immediately runs past him, through the makeshift entry way. "S-Sowwy!"

Marshall follows him, through the door of the room, and into the last classroom, where the kids and Rubble were taking turns going down the ladder, Mrs. Heather already being out thanks to Ryder helping them carry her down.

Chase was standing beside the window, ushering the kids onto the ladder like and assembly line. Soon enough, the last kid was through, then Rubble and Zuma follows them down. Chase then tilts his head. "Okay buddy, you first!"

Marshall gives a quick nod. "Right!" However, just as he steps closer, Marshall hears a crack and before he knew it, he fell through the floor with a loud "Whoa!" On the way down.

He didn't have a soft landing as he lands right on a pile of desks in a room below him, hitting his chin on the small table of a desk, knocking him out.

For a few minutes, he laid there before finally waking up and shakes his head. Feeling as if he was hit by an eighteen-wheeler. Once the dizziness was gone, he looks around and realized that he is in a flaming death trap.

Fire had invaded the classroom as the walls were covered in flames. The heat was intense, causing him to instantly pant. Miraculously, there was a spot in the middle with no flames opposed to the desks around him that were engulfed. Probably because the newly created pile of rubble may have squashed the fire under him.

Marshall continuously snaps his head around like a chicken, trying to find anyway out; but everywhere he looks, was fire that was inching closer to him. His pants quickened as he saw the fires around him close in. He starts to panic, whimpering and whining as he crunches down, realizing that he was trapped and helpless just like he was a year ago.

He may have got his memories back, but that didn't mean his fear went away as he knew that no one was coming for him, with no way of calling Ryder or anyone else.

"No! Someone! Please! Help! Help!" Marshall screams. "CHASE! RYDER! ANYONE! HELP ME!"

Just as he says their names, Marshall immediately thinks about his friends. The poor things. Being worried immensely about him, and is frantically finding some way to help their friend; but Marshall knows by the time they get to him, he would be a gonner, for real this time. After he promised Ryder he'd get out and that he wouldn't lose him again.

Marshall's eyes shot wide open at the thought. No. He can't give up now. Not so soon, when he was just given a second chance. It would be a shame if Marshall lets the flames take him and his friends...no, his family loses him yet again. Not if Marshall can do anything about it.

He picks up and puts the helmet Ryder gave him back on and it was as if his fear was cut down by his fiery determination.

Through this epiphany, Marshall spots his way out. A literal open window in front of him, untouched by the fire around. He gets on his fours and jumps up to the window, furiously climbing through it, however, he was a little too big as he was suddenly stuck, wiggling his body to get free.

Then, a sudden explosion erupts behind him, just as he wiggles free, and the force of the blow launched him right out of the window like a cannon.

With a wail, Marshall sours over a good yard before landing on the grass, tumbling forward a few feet before finally rolling to a stop with his back paws over his head and plopping down on the ground belly first.

He lays there for a bit, before slowly getting up and opening his eyes to a awestruck Ryder right in front of him, along with the Paw Patrol and a crowd of people, half shocked and more great concern on their faces.

Marshall gives all of them a big toothy smile. "I'm good."

As soon as he says that the crowd suddenly erupts into massive and mindless cheers for his escape. Ryder wraps his arms around the dalmatian, hugging him as tight as he could.

"Gosh dawg it Marshall! Don't you ever scare me like that again!" Ryder shrieks, tightening his grip on him.

Marshall somehow keeps his smile on despite what felt like a snake hugging him. "Awww Ryder. Haven't you learned by now?"

Ryder lets go. "Learned what?"

Marshall chuckles. "That it's going to take more than a burning building collapsing to get rid of me."

Ryder smirks in response. "You couldn't be more right Marshall."

They both shared a laugh before the pup and boy was suddenly tackled by the Paw Patrol mob. All giving him frantic licks.

"Dag gone it Marshall, what can kill you?!" Rocky lets out.

"Yeah, we thought you were toast for sure this time!" Skye cries.

"You shouldn't scare us like that buddy!" Rubble adds with a huge lick on Marshall's cheek.

They soon cease their licks, allowing Marshall to get back on his feet and smiles at all of them.

"Aww you guys. I assure you; I didn't mean to put you all through that again." Marshall warms with his smile.

"Marshall." Marshall hears Chase and sees the same hopeful look the shepherd had on in the building. Anticipation, Joy, and hope. "Is it you? The real deal? Are you truly back?"

The pups around him all matches Chase's look, though Marshall didn't falter despite everyone hanging on his answer.

"Yes Chase. It's me. All of me. I'm as real as I'll ever be." Marshall proudly states, before losing his smile. "Though....I've got one question."

"What is it buddy?" Chase asks with very wide smile.

Marshall looks around at his friend suddenly clueless. "Who are all of you again?"

Everyone instantly gasps all the air into their lungs. Their eyes as wide as soccer balls and their tearful smiles gone.

"Wh-What?" Chase croaks.

Marshall gives everyone one more look before he suddenly starts snickering to himself, gradually turning into rising laughter, and goes down in a heaving ball.

Confused at first, The Paw Patrol finally catches on to Marshall's poorly timed joke. All at once, their faces dropped to unamused glances, as they all let out.

"Not funny, Marshall!!!"
