Chapter 44: Burning Memories

In Chase's opinion, he felt that he was spending way too long trying to find Dally. It would help if he knew where he lived so he could meet him there or so, but he stupidly keeps forgetting to ask.

It's a weird occurrence because usually, Chase would've found Dally by now. Thanks to Dally's easy traceable sent, it wasn't hard finding him these past couple of days. But today for some reason, Chase didn't pick up anything, which meant that Dally was not in the usual area where they would meet. Making Chase resort to sniffing the ground blindly for Dally's scent.

"Ah Ha!" Chase exclaimed when he finally found it. "Go you Dally!"

He darted off toward the direction of Dally's scent. As the scent get stronger and stronger, he noticed just how far off Dally was from his usual spot. He hoped he wasn't in town or that would be an awkward situation. Thankfully, Chase was familiar with the forest, and was pretty sure he was heading towards the open field where the pups and Ryder usually went to go camping. Chase then realized that it was suddenly the worst place for Dally to be right now, as he was sure the open field was where Skye and her brother were practicing for the air show. Chase put more in his step to get there before either Wings or Skye sees him.

The faint sound of cheering entered Chase's ears as he ran faster towards the sound. He finally found Dally jumping up and down and watching the two practice as he also heard the sound of Skye's jet pack blowing by.

"Dally!" Chase called out, while getting closer to him, prompting the Dalmatian to turn around.

"Oh, hey Chase! I'm just...oof!"

Before Dally knew it, Chase tackled Dally to the ground and pulled him over to a hiding spot in the trees and bushes. Dally squirmed as Chase held him and put a paw to his mouth.

"Shh. Quiet Dally, you don't want them to hear you."

Dally muffled something to the lines of "Why not?" in which Chase shushed him again.

"I'll tell you later." Chase whispered, as he heard Skye's voice. He ducked down into the bushes as he saw Skye come up through the trees about a few feet away.

Dally was thankfully quiet as they waited for her to be gone.

"Skye, would you stop playing?" Wings called as he approached.

"I'm not playing bro; I did see someone. He was watching us!" Skye responded.

Chase really wanted to pop out and reveal that it was he who was watching, to not make Skye seem crazy, but then Dally would be spotted, and the secret would be out.

He saw Skye turn away from them and stayed absolutely still as the two talk. Dally squirmed and muffled some more. Chase then looks at him. "Okay Dally, I'm ma let got of you. But trust me, you don't wanna alert them that you were watching. okay?"

Dally looked confused for the most part, but nodded anyway.

"Thanks Dally, I promise I'll tell you why when they're gone." Chase said as he let go of him.

Dally got up and slightly shook as they both watched for the two to be gone. Soon enough, Chase heard the sound of jets again and saw Skye and Wings leave the field, leaving Dally and Chase completely alone.

"Okay, I think they're gone now." Chase announced.

"Aww. They were so cool. I wanted to see more." Dally then looked back at Chase. "What's the big deal man? And who were they?"

Chase thought of an easy explanation. Although he knew Skye wouldn't mind an onlooker, it would have been hectic if she saw Dally.

"That is Skye and Wings. They're practicing for an airshow in two days. I'm sorry I tackled you buddy, but they strongly prefer that no one disturbs them while they practice."

"Oh, I guess that makes since." Dally hung in sadness. "They were pretty cool though. Doing all of there tricks and all in the air. I couldn't imagine doing something like that." He then looked back up at Chase. "Do you know them?"

"Yeah, I know them. They're my friends." Chase smiled. "In fact, one of them is actually my teammate."

"Really? Which one?" Dally asked.

"The one in the pink gear. Skye." Chase answered. "She's the team's pilot, and a real good one at that. She's also smart and funny and so beautiful. She's also got a smile that makes my day light up whenever I look at it. You should see it Dally, It'll make you feel all warm and...."

Chase had to forcibly stop himself as he realized that he was going off tangent. He looked at Dally and saw that he looked a little troubled and not really paying attention.

"Dally? You there buddy?"

A few seconds went by until Dally finally responded. SSSSSKye? I....I know I've heard that name before."

Chase's ears perked. "Really? You have?"

"Y-Yeah....I think so." Dally confirmed.

Chase's ears perked up again and his tail wagged some more. "Really? How so?"

"I-I don't know." Dally stammered. "I just feel like I've heard that name constantly, but I can't get anything else but the name." He then looks at Chase firmly. "Chase, I need to talk to you about something."

Chase pointed his ears towards the dalmatian. "Go ahead Dally."

Marshall kept his firm look. "Chase, this may sound a little weird, but when we met, I was just happy with having a friend at all, but.....whenever I would think of you, I get this eerily feeling like I've know you all my life, I swear I've never met you, ever."

Chase let out a soft whimper to where Dally couldn't hear it.

"Then....we started hanging out more, and I'd have so much fun playing with you, then I'd start to have these....dreams."

"Dreams?" Chase repeated.

"Yes Chase. Dreams. Although, I don't really think you can call them dreams, because I thought you would have to be asleep to have dreams." Dally commented before he shook his head. "A-Anyway, I'd have these....dreams...out of nowhere and they would be very different from the ones I'd usually have."

"How different, Dally?" Chase asked, his curiosity growing more and more.

"Well, for one, I'm a completely different pup, and they don't get so weird like a normal dream does. Another thing is that I'm usually around different pups who I really don't know, but during it, I knew them by name. No question."

Chase was now positive on what Dally was trying to explain. He wasn't an expert by any means, but he was pretty sure Dally was starting to have flash backs. The mere thought filled Chase's heart with hope.

"I can't remember their names, but I do remember saying them, though I don't remember ever meeting them at all except....you."

Chase's ears perked again as Dally then looked at him almost suspiciously. "Chase...you were there...in every single one of them. In some shape or form, you would be a strong presence in them and they would always come when you would say something that stuck with me. Like what you said yesterday about the Paw Patrol's name. You said that it was me that came up with it."

Chase waited to either curse himself or be relieved for his little screw up yesterday this could go either way.

"When you said that, I had no idea what you were talking about, but then, I had another one where we were together and we were arguing about.....the name."

The shepherd could see Dally's tone get more and more tense as he went on. "Chase, when we first met, you thought I was someone else. You called be Marshall. I didn't think much about it at the time, but here lately, I'm starting to think that you're not wrong at all."

Chase's fur stood on end. Could this be it? Could this be the moment he's waited for? Will Dally finally realize who he is?

Dally then asks the question. A question Chase has longed waited for.

"Chase. Am I that friend you lost? Am I......Marshall?"

The shepherd could hardly take the moment. His breathing weakened, and his heart rate slowed to a crawl. He couldn't decide whether to tell him or steer him off. Having no idea what the result would be.

"Chase? Chase? Hello? Are you there?" Dally called though as far as Chase knew, Dally didn't say anything.

'What are you doing?! Tell him! He clearly figured it out on his own. There's no reason to tell him he's wrong! This is your one chance and you're blowing it!'

'Then again, what will happen when I do tell him? Will he get mad? Will he run away from me? Gaww what would Ryder do?'

"Come on Chase! Don't leave me hanging here!" Chase could hear Dally get more irritated the longer he stood silent. "It is true or not."

Chase was about ready to pass out at this point. This was such a crucial decision that could make or break his friendship. He had to answer him now so.....he went with his gut.

He clenched his paws. "Yes Dally. It's true......you are Marshall."

Chase braced himself for Dally's response, who was silent for a couple of minutes his voice sounded a little in disbelief.

"Wh-Why didn't you tell me?"

"I.....I......I didn't want to freak you out Dally." Chase answered, his paws as tight as baseballs. "And overwhelm you."

Dally dipped his head. "You know, I would've listened to you if you'd just told me."

Chase cocked his head. "You would've?"

"Yeah Chase. I already knew about my memories being lost and I was so desperate to get anything. I'm telling you man, I wouldn't have rejected you." Dally said, raising his head.

Chase then whimpered as he dipped his head. "I'm so sorry buddy. Honestly. I didn't mean to keep it to myself. I just thought it would be better on you if you figured it out by yourself."

Dally took a moment to let out a depressing sigh. "It doesn't matter now Chase. I think I know what I must do."

"What's that?" Chase asked.

Dally raised his head back up and looked at Chase very determined. "I think....I need to join the Paw Patrol."

A shiver of excitement flowed through Chase. "J-Join?"

"Yeah Chase. I think if I joined, I'll get closer to recovering my memories." Dally explained.

Chase didn't need much to convince him. If he'd were to join now, this whole thing call finally be over, but as much as he was ready for it, there was still a big hurdle to jump over.

"What about your owner Dally?" Chase asked. "Would she be okay with something like that?"

Dally didn't seem deterred from the question. "I don't know why not. She said she'd support me if I ever got my memories back."

Chase was very skeptical about that. She didn't sound like it when she made her little threat yesterday. "I would still talk to her about it Dally. You would be leaving her after all."

It took a bit before Dally responded. "Yeah. I guess you're right. She had taken care of me, and I do love her."

"And I guess I'll talk to my owner too." Chase replied, putting aside the sting of anger he got from Dally's statement. "See what he says."

"Right....your owner. Ryder....was it?" Dally's tone was not as pleasant as Chase would expect, though there was no animosity behind it. "I have some questions for him too."

Chase was about to dig into it, until a fowl stench of burning wood entered his nostrils. He sniffed a couple times catching more of it. "Hey. You smell that?"

"Smell what?" Dally asked obliviously.

The smell directed Chase behind him, and he saw a thin layer of smoke above the trees. Fearing something was up, he took off in it's direction.

"Wait, Chase! Wait for me!" Dally called as he follows him.

Chase ran through the cloud at break neck speed, the foul stench of smoke being more stronger and stronger, almost making Chase stop and have a coughing fit.

By the rate of the smoke getting stronger, it was shaping to be a serious forest fire, in which Chase was hoping it wasn't as the forest was a bit of a special spot for the Paw Patrol. Ready to call Ryder at any moment.

Then, he finally found the source, but it wasn't a forest fire, at least not yet. It was a log cabin in an open area, completely engulfed in flames. Chase recognized it as one of the last standing cabins that been there since the dawn of Adventure Bay.

"Oh my gosh! It's really on fire!" Dally let out as he finally caught up to Chase.

"Yeah, and it's toast." Chase added. "We need to put it out before it reaches the trees."

Before Chase could call Ryder, Dally calls out. "Chase, look!"

Chase looked at where Dally was pointing and saw a lone pup, stumbling as she tried to run from the cabin."

On pure instinct, Chase leapt towards the pup, with Dally behind him.

The golden retriever collapsed to the ground right as Chase and Dally got up to her. The heat was very intense as they were at least ten feet from the burning cabin.

"Hey, this is Chase from the Paw Patrol. Are you okay?" Chase tried to talk to her, but all he got from her was heaving and coughing.

Chase thought to finally call Ryder, until the pup finally spoke between coughs.

"P-Please. -Koff-koff-my brother." She gasped. "Koff-ack-koff, you have to-koff-koff-ack-koff-my brother!"

"Shh! Don't talk. Rest for now."

The pup was contorting with each cough. "No! Koff-koff-my brother's in there!" She was audibly getting weaker. "Pl-Please-Koff-koff-save my-koff-Broth...brothe...."

With that, she was unconscious, with the only sign of life being her raspy breaths, prompting Chase to reach for his pup tag.

"Ryder here. What's up Chase?"

"Ryder! There's a cabin on fire out here in the woods!"

"Yes sir, but there's a pup who's unconscious and another one who's trapped inside!"

"Understood Chase! Sit tight! We'll be there as fast as we can." Ryder responded.

"But what about the pup that's inside can I go find him?"

"Absolutely not Chase. You have no equipment or protection. The most you can do is help the pup that is out any way you can." Ryder ordered.

"U-Understood Ryder sir." Chase replied.

"Chaaase." Ryder said suspiciously. "I mean it. Don't be a hero till I get there, got it?"

"Yes sir Ryder sir!" Chase hung up with Ryder and proceeded to turn to Dally.

"Dally, help me get her...." He stopped when he realized that Dally was no longer beside him. "Dally?"

Chase snapped his head around until he saw Dally's tail go into the burning log cabin.

"DALLY!" Chase cried, as he ran after him, wondering what the hell he was thinking.

When Ryder pulled up to Katies on his ATV, he was still trying to calm himself down.

He didn't know how he got through that interview. After hearing the harsh criticism and being told that he didn't care for his pups, yet also knowing that Stacy was essentially holding his pup hostage, he was surprised at himself for staying calm through the whole thing.

It was not only clear to him that Stacy knew what she was doing; he also knew why she was doing it. That was what made Ryder angrier about it. Marshall was a beloved pup by all. Family, friends, and fans all cried for him when he died, not knowing that he's been alive all this time and being kept from by someone who stole him in distaste of Ryder.

He wonders if he could invite Marshall's parents down and have them talk to Stacy, just to see how long that will last, but that would be a cruel thing to do and he didn't want to stoop that low.

Despite finding a lot about Stacy in the interview, he knew he only made the situation worse. She was sure to find a way out of Adventure Bay with Marshall or not. He was quite surprised she was even still here, as he would've expected Stacy to run away with the pup by now, where no one would recognize him.

That didn't matter now, what mattered was the trust the pups had in him. The interview made him reflect on how he was leading the team and how much of a disaster it was at this point. He knew he was doing a horrible job, and no matter how much his pups would say different, their trust in him was dwindling by the day.

Rather than sit and mope about it, Ryder was finally going to take the initiative to regain their trust.

First stop, Rocky. The pup that has the least amount of trust him right now. He found that out yesterday when Katie told Ryder about the argument Chase and Rocky had. At first he thought that Rocky wasn't himself and just needed to be assured, but after the interview with Stacy Jackson, he now thought that he had to more like convince him that Ryder didn't mean to hurt him.

He walked into Katie's parlor where the girl herself was behind the counter.

"Oh, hey Ryder." Katie greeted in time with the bell.

"Hey Katie, just need to talk to Rocky." Ryder replied with the best smile he could muster.

"Sure, you know where he is." Katie replied. "The same place he's been for the past four days. I think he's asleep though."

"That won't matter Katie. I'll stay in there until he wakes up."

Katie of course knew why Ryder was here, which was why didn't do much to prevent him. "Just...please don't make another screaming match in there Ryder. It tears me to see you all like that."

"Don't worry Katie, Rocky will probably yell at me more than I'll yell at him." Ryder disclosed, as he passed Katie and went into the infirmary.

There, he found Rocky wide awake but had no reaction when he saw Ryder. Just a blank stare on anything other than his owner. Even when Ryder got to the right side of the bed, pulling up a chair and sitting close to him, he just stayed the same.

"Hey little guy. How you feeling?" Ryder asked hoping to start to conversation off nicely.

It was then that Rocky finally moved, but not towards him. He turned over to his side away from Ryder, not saying a word, in fact, he pretended to go to sleep.

Ryder didn't know what the mixed breed was mad at him more for. Putting him in such danger, keeping him here, or the feeling that Ryder would replace him.

He reached over and placed a calming hand on the pup's back, making Rocky tense up as if he was going to jump out of the bed and away from his owner.

The boy then started to rub his back to try to assure the pup that he came in piece. "Look bud. I know things hadn't been great for us lately and I don't blame you for being mad at me. In fact..." Ryder had to suppress tears. "I don't blame you if you out right hate me now. I just want you to know that I'm doing everything I can for you and.....that I still love you Rocky."

Ryder noticed that the tense feeling form Rocky had now relaxed as calm as the wind. Then, he started to slowly turn over to him, prompting Ryder to retract his had and be met with the most adorable eyes that could rival Zuma's or even Marshall's.

Ryder sat in silence as the pup's eyes penetrated his. He didn't have anything else he could say to assure his pup. Then...Rocky finally responded. "I don't hate you Ryder. I....I love you too."

Ryder would've been happy with any sort of response from the pup. He bowed his head in shame. "I....I'm having a hard time figuring out why. I put you all in danger all the time."

"Yeah, but you don't mean to." Rocky replied with a sudden smile. "I know you do it because you trust us that much and know what were capable of."

Ryder shook his head with a smirk of his own. "You didn't have this same feeling yesterday from what I heard."

Rocky's smile disappeared. "I know, but...I didn't mean any of those things I said about you yesterday. I was just sooo angry."

Ryder kept his smirk on. Growing to a small smile. "Well, you don't have to be angry anymore. I'm gonna let you come back home today."

Rocky's eyes grew wide in response as he suddenly jumped up to a sitting position in front of Ryder with almost no trouble at all. "R-Really? You're letting me go home?" Rocky chirped. "But...But I thought..."

"You can think your old pal Zuma, for getting through to me." Ryder informed. "I still think you have a ways to go in your recovery, I think letting you come back home will help out more than I can imagine."

As if a sudden switch was pulled, Rocky responded by leaping off the bed, and landing in Ryder's arms, prompting him to hug his pups solemnly.

After a bit, Ryder sat him back down on the bed and proceeded to make his way out of the room. "Let me go set it clear with Katie first."

Then, his pup pad went off and Ryder pulled it out, saw it was Chase that was calling, and answered it. "Ryder here. What's up Chase?"

"Ryder! There's a cabin on fire out here in the woods!"

Intense worry washed the boy's face. "Are you okay?!"

"Yes sir, but there's a pup who's unconscious and another one who's trapped inside!"

"Understood Chase! Sit tight! We'll be there as fast as we can." Ryder responded.

"But what about the pup that's inside can I go find him?"

Ryder was sure with his answer. As dire as the situation was for the pup, he wasn't going to let another one of his pups get hurt. "Absolutely not Chase. You have no equipment or protection. The most you can do is help the pup that is out any way you can."

"U-Understood Ryder sir." Chase replied.

Although he felt that his pups was being honest, he couldn't help but be a little skeptical. "Chaaase." Ryder said suspiciously. "I mean it. Don't be a hero till I get there, got it?"

Chase nodded firmly. "Yes sir Ryder sir."

With that, Ryder put his pup pad away, and turned to Rocky.

"Looks like you're going to have to wait a little longer Rocky. There's an emergency."

Ryder turned to leave but Rocky call out to him. "Ryder? Can I go on this mission? Pleeeeeeease?"

Ryder didn't expect to think so much about his decision. His instinctive answer was no, but he couldn't bring himself to say it. He did need all paws on deck, and he could always restrict him. "Okay Rocky. I'll let you come, but your gonna be on light duty. Understand?"

Rocky howled and wagged in agreement as he leapt off the bed. They then run out of the room towards the front door. Katie jumped in surprise of the burst and was more shocked to see Rocky running alongside him.

"Huh? What's going...."

"Talk to you about later Katie! There's an emergency!"

Before Ryder could hear a response, he was out of the parlor with Rocky in tow. He jumped on his ATV with Rocky sitting behind him, as they made their way to the lookout.

Dally had no idea what he was doing. All he knew was when he heard the pup say that her brother was trapped inside, a suppressed feeling inside him, launched him towards the cabin.

He didn't even know what he would do in the cabin. He guessed he'll just find the pup's brother and get out. Hopefully.

When he went in, the heat was instantly unbearable as he ran to the center of the building. It was then that he realized that he didn't even know what the pup's name was.

"Hello?! Anyone in here?!" Dally called as he looked around for any sign of life.

Though, as he looked, he finally notices what he was surrounded by flames and smoke.

The adrenaline in him dispersed as the smoke and heat invaded his body. Making him cough immediately. Then, started think more about the smoke and flames around him. His mind went slow but his body was at normal speed.

A growing feeling formed in the back of his mind. A feeling of being lost, scared, and burning. Taking him back to a similar situation.

A lone Dalmatian pup opened his eyes to a horrible situation.

When he got up on his fours, he looked around and saw that he was in a hallway. A burning hallway nearly bout to come down on him.

He didn't know where he was or what he was doing there, let alone who he was. He noticed that he was wearing some sort of pack on his back, with a contraption that was clearly broken, thanks to the limp robotlike arm, dangling from the pack that looked like a water gun of sorts. The dalmatian tried to get it to work but it was no use. Even if there was water in it, he didn't think it could help him at all.

The pup started to yelp for help, hoping anyone would hear him. "Hey! Hey! Anyone here?! I need help! Help!" He cried, getting nothing but the crackling sound of fire in return. "P-Please! Anybody! Please! I need help! Help! HELP ME!!!!!"

He still got nothing but dead silence back, making him lose all hope and whimper and whine to the floor. Realizing that nobody was coming to save him.

"P...Pl...Please. Anyone." The pup cried as he crouched low to the ground.

Chase barged into the cabin, immediately shutting his eyes and panting in response to the fire around him.

The cabin from the inside was unrecognizable. Anything resembling a nice cozy cabin was straight up gone. The walls, the floor, and roof were all covered in flames and smoke. The shepherd could even tell what room he was in.

He had one thing on his mind. Find Dally and possibly find the pup's brother.

"Koff-koff. D-Koff-Dally?! Dally! Dally-koff-koff-Where are you?!" Chase called looking all around for any sign of the Dalmatian or the lost pup.

After rubbing his eyes and coughing up a storm, his eyes finally spotted a pup on the ground, a few feet in front of him. He ran to it and his heart dropped when he realized that it was his spotted friend.

However, he soon noticed that Dally was not laying, he was crouching and shivering instead. As if he was having a nightmare. He crouched down and shook the Dalmatian. "Dally! Dally! Dally!"

He couldn't get anything out of the pup. Just whimpers and possibly more shaking. A loud crash behind erupted, nearly scaring Chase out of his paws. A loud yelp came out of the Dalmatian, snapping him out of what ever was going on with him. As soon as he spotted Chase, he jumped up and hugged him tightly. "CHASE! CHASE! HELP ME! HELP ME!"

Chase pushed Dally off him. "Dally! koff-koff- Pull yourself together! We've got to get out of here!"

"H-How?!" Dally yelped.

Chase pointed towards the entrance. "The way we-came in! There's still a clear path to it! Come on!"

"But what ab koff-koff- bout the pup?!" Dally asked through his scared whimpers.

"Dally ack-koff-We won't last koff-long in here!" Chase replied.

"But that koff-koff-ack!-Pup's gonna die!" Dally protested.

Another crash behind them, this time with visuals as they felt something behind them hitting the ground. Causing the pups to yelp again.

Chase got behind the dally and pushed him forward. "Were no good to him dead! Go! Go! Go!"

The two ran towards the door ahead of them not stopping for anything. They were almost out until Dally tripped on his paws and fell back on the floor. Chase picked him up by the scruff of his neck and burst themselves outside. Nearly tripping himself.

Dally and Chase ran away some more form the burning house before they collapsed to the ground coughing and heaving.

When Chase finally seemed to catch his breath, he went over to Dally with blind fury. "Dally! What on earth were you thinking?! You have no protection at all!" Chase yelled still coughing a little.

"I koff-koff-I don't know! I just heard her, and I went! I don't know what came over me!" Dally answered back, cringing at the shepherd's loud yelling.

"Dally koff-koff-Ack! You're lucky I found you and got us out of there!" Chase yelped more, his anger over taking him. "Don't you ever do that again!"

"I'm sorry Chase! I'm sorry!" Dally cried, clenching more and more. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

"Sorry won't cut it if you do things like that Dally!" Chase yelled back.

"I didn't mean to! I didn't mean to!" Dally was now hyperventilating. "Please, just please stop yelling at me!"

It was then that Chase realized what he was doing. Scaring the pup more and more with his anger. He had to try to calm himself down as he closed his eyes and calmed himself with a deep breath.

Tears almost escaped the shepherd as he seemed to finally calm down. "I'm sorry for yelling Dally. I was just.....scared that I would lose you again."

Dally stayed on the ground as he whimpered some more. "I'm so sorry Chase."

Chase opened his eyes and noticed that the pup was still shaking his tail off. "What happened in there anyway? Why did you freeze like that?"

"I...I don't know. Seeing all that smoke and......fire....just.....made me froze. I felt so lonely, and scared....like I did that day...."

Chase didn't need it spelled out to him. He instantly knew what day Dally was alluding to. To him, it was the day he lost Marshall, when he was trapped in city hall, and it collapsed on him. The event must've been so traumatizing to him. He must've cried for help over and over and got nothing in return. Chase immediately felt extreme guilt. If only he heard him. If only.

Chase then realized another glaring fact that shocked Chase. Something that was sure to be a big problem with Dally joining Paw Patrol.

Dally's afraid of Fire.

Chase was going to ask more questions, but he noticed that Dally was no longer in front of him. He looked around and saw the pup running away from him.

"Wait, Wait! Dally! Dally!" Chase called out, as he watched the dalmatian disappear into the forest, leaving Chase alone with the fire. He would've gone after him, but he had to stay within the vicinity to help Ryder and the pups when they show up.
