Chapter 49: Back to Square One

Skye was way more focused today than she was yesterday. She didn't let anything cloud her mind including Marshall, the rescue yesterday, or even Chase. All she had on her mind were the tricks she was practicing with her brother.

They fooled around a little at first, looping in sync and against each other, and raced at least twice. Partly for bragging rights, but mostly to test their speed on the jet packs. Skye of course won all of them as she was more skilled with it than her brother, but that's not to say that Wings was bad because he just got the hang of it.

They then flew around a little more to get some ideas for what they wanted to do for the show. They currently have the Belly Brush as their opener and some low level to medium tricks to fill out their thirty-minute slot in the show. All they needed was a closer. A stunt that'll raise the crowd to their feet. The two were now standing apart from each other as they bounced ideas back and forth.

"We could fly under the stands and then fly above the crowd and have five them. That's something right?" Skye suggested.

"Maybe." Wings replied. "But that'll abstract their view a little. They already have to look down and through the stands for us. What's the point of a trick when they can't see it, sis?"

"Oh." Skye said. "Didn't think about that."

"We could both do one massive loop except you could go one way and I can go the other way. Meet each other at the top, slap paws and meet at the bottom and pose." Wings proposed.

"Really? Come on bro. That'll pass for a military airshow or something." Skye picked. "We need something big Wings. Something we can't do with planes."

"I was going to add twists or something." Wings mumbled.

The two stood silent in their own heads, trying to come up with something to give their show the ending it needs.

"You know, for a couple of pups who have a big show ahead of them, you sure are spending a long time thinking about what you're going to do."

Skye gasped openly. She knew that sudden voice no matter how long it's been, she'll always recognize it. Her heart inflated when she turned around to a pair of full grown dogs with similar features to Skye and Wings. A radical cocker spaniel named Arion and a dashing poodle named Swift. Her parents with the happiest and most cocky 0smiles on their faces.

Skye's face lit up like a fire work, immediately propelling her straight to her mother. Wrapping her up in a big hug. "Mom! Dad!"

Arion joined the hug himself. Not waiting for Skye to move on to him. As Wings walks up to the group with a wide smile.

"Mmmm. Hey squirt. Thanks for calling us, all this year." Swift poked while hugging her daughter.

Skye let go and looked at her mother with remorse. In the total craziness of the past year, she made no effort to call her parents or Wings. In fact, when Wings called her to tell her about the show, it'd been the first time she had any contact with them in almost seven months.

It wasn't by accident as Skye wants it to be. She deliberately avoided ever calling her family in the wake of Marshall's passing. It was very painful to even talk about let alone give the news. She also felt if they found out, her parents and especially Wings would be over their paws worried for her, and she was not motivated to do that.

Skye whined in front of her parents. "I'm so sorry Mom and Dad. A lot has happened and..."

"It's okay Skye, I get it. Ryder told us what happened when we got here." Swift sympathetically stated. "I'm not going to fly over you though. We defiantly dropped the ball on our end and should've made more of an effort to call you. Especially after what happened to you friend Marshall."

Skye whimpered a little more as she looked at her father who had not said a word at this point.

"Dad? What about you? Do you forgive your silly daughter?" Skye asked with a whimper.

"..."

Arion's mouth didn't move as his eyes shifted like he was hiding from someone before giving a nod.

Skye popped an eyebrow. Her dad wasn't a mute at all and she knew for a fact he would have some words for her considering he was more protective with his pups more than Swift.

"Dad? Are you okay?" The cockapoo asked with concern.

Arion still didn't say anything at all, only grumbling noises like a spell was cast on him, preventing him from speaking.

"Oh don't worry about your father Skye. He's fine." Swift grinned suddenly. "He just can't talk right now."

"Wh-Why? What happened to him?" Skye whimpered a little.

"Well you see, wise guy thought it was a good idea to challenge me to a race with a stipulation." Swift chuckled with a nudge. "As you can probably guess, he lost his tail to me, and cannot utter a single word for the entire day."

"You challenged Mom to a race?!" Wings sounded off. "She's the fastest flier in the world Dad, what did you think was going to happen?!"

Arion could shake his head and moan.

"Clearly he wasn't thinking at all, and he was doing all that trash talking too." Swift mocked with a cocky smile. "That's why the stipulation was added in the first place. Now he's really biting it and it's pretty hilarious actually."

Skye looked at her mother with a hopeful look. It was clear where Skye got her pride from. Her mother could a be a little cold and headstrong, especially when it came to competition.

"Come on Mom. Can't you let him say at least one thing to me? You know how torturing it is for him." Skye resonated with a sympathetic look.

Swift closed her eyes and pointed her nose up. "Sorry Sweetie, but you know me. A bet is a bet; he knew that and raced me anyway. He can do all the talking he wants tomorrow." She then nuzzles him a little seductively. "Isn't that right sweet paws?"

The spaniel grumbled in response, though he couldn't help but smile a little at his love's appeal to him; which resulted in Skye and Wings shooting their tongues out in disgust.

"Ew." They both say in unison.

The two older dogs let out a quick laugh as Swift looked back at her pups. "Now, enough about us. What about you two? You got a killer routine for the show?"

"Of course we do Mom." Wings answered. "What, did think we've been out here fiddilin with our paws?"

"Well, from the way we saw the both of you just starting at each other when we got here, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case." Swift out with a wide grin.

"Well we do and it's unlike any other routine we've done before." Skye proudly stated.

"Really? Can you show us?" Swift requested with a raised eyebrow.

"Of course we can. Right Wings?"

Wings gave his sister a smug grin. "Right sis. Let's show them the Belly Brush!"

Skye winked at her brother in approval before Swift spoke up.

"The Belly Brush? Really? Come on you two. We've seen you do that hundred of times."

"Not like this Mom. Yip! Wings!" On command, Skye's pup pack sprouted it's wings as her brother's did as well. "You've never seen it with jet packs!"

"Jet packs? You mean those things Ryder built for you?" Swift responded.

Wings nodded. "Uh huh. Were going to be using these instead of planes."

"It's going to be sooo awesome!" Skye yipped and flipped.

Their parents though, didn't exactly have the same enthusiasm. One had look of worry but couldn't fully express it, while the other had a unimpressed look, though she still had a smug grin.

"Huh....have to admit. This is going to be veeerry interesting." She let out. "Hopefully you won't crash and burn with that thing like last time Wings."

"Crashed and burned?" Skye replied while taking a glance at her brother. "What does..."

"It won't be like last time Mom. It will be the best performance you will ever see, right Skye?"

Wings then glanced back at Skye for agreement. Skye was very curious about what her mother meant, but one look at her brother told her that it was probably best just to drop it.

"Well what are you waiting for?" Swift urged. "Go on. Share for the class."

"Right away! Come on Skye!" Wings yipped as he activated his jets and flew off, prompting Skye to do the same.

The two spread apart to about a hundred-yard gap. Skye turned to see Wings far and away. She then looks at her parents, who were off to the side. She then heard her brother through her pup tag.

"Back up a little bit Skye. We need to make sure they are dead center, so they can see the brush."

Skye obeyed as she backed up a little.

"There, that's perfect!" Wings called. "You ready?"

Skye locked eyes with her brother. "Ready bro!" She says, as she jumped up and activated her jets. Suspending her in the air.

She saw Wings do the same before she heard "Three, two, one, go!"

Right on go, Skye thrusted forward as Wings did the same. Rapidly approaching at a blinding rate. Their parents off to the side as they got closer and closer.

Skye wasn't nervous at all. This was the first trick they practiced today, and they were able to get it down packed after a few times. She just hoped that her Mom and Dad will be impressed.

They were now fifty yards apart, as Skye locked on to her brother like a missile. The gap closing in on the millisecond.

Forty

Thirty

Twenty

When they reached ten, Skye counted down from five to shift at the exact second.

Five, four, three, two, one

Right on one, they were near face to face. Skye snapped her body sideways and felt a slight brush on he belly, telling her that the trick was a success, as she heard her brother's jet blow by. She turned around right at the parents and was rewarded with their absolute dumbfounded looks.

Swift's eyes looked like they would launch out of her head, while Arion's jaw grew ten sizes. Wings and Skye jetted to them, skidding their paws on the grass as they stood proudly in front of their parents.

"Well, how about that? That do anything for ya?" Skye proudly stood.

Swift was dang near speechless. Only letting out subtle sounds. "Uh....um...I....uh....hm..."

"Are you kidding me?! THAT WAS AMAZING!!!" Arion shot off like a gun, jump scaring everyone. "I didn't even see you two shift at all! The crowd is going to adore that!"

Skye and Wings stood appalled at their father's outburst. While Swift snapped her head at him.

Arion squirmed a little as he realized what he did. "Uh..I mean...ahem! Mm-mmm." He groaned as he cleared his throat.

"I-I'll give you that one Ari." Swift stammered still in total awe of what she saw. "I can't believe you two found a way to make that trick more amazing than it already was."

Skye smiled flattery. "Well...that was the idea, Mom."

"You've got to show us more!" Swift added with excitement with Arion nodding frantically. "Show us more!"

"Well um....you see...."

"Sorry Mom. That's all you'll get. Don't want to spoil you with everything." Wings declared with a sheepish grin.

"What?! Oh come on! You can't just give us that!" Swift begged. "Just one more trick, please?!"

Skye was quite appalled by her parents' eagerness. It was almost like those times where Skye and Wings would be begging their parents to see their just like now, except the roles were reversed.

Skye put on a smug grin herself, wrapped up in the opportunity of a lifetime. "Our paws are on the ground, Mom."

Swift twitched in frustration, letting out a very annoyed groan. Then she smirked and started to chuckle. "Heh. Well played Mighty Wings. I guess you raised our expectations." She then looks solemnly at her pups. "I couldn't be prouder of you two."

Along with seeing her father smile, Skye's heart grew even more at that.

"I guess we should leave you to it then. But don't take too long pups." Swift said. "We still need to practice ourselves, and this is quite the space to do it."

After a quick hug to her mother, Skye switched to her father, who held on longer and tighter then her mother. When he was sure Swift was distracted with Wings, Arion snuck out a whisper. "I think I'm more proud of you than your mother. I missed you so much my little angel."

Skye took aghast at the name. It was what Arion always called her since she was born. However, it now had a more meaning than it did before, thanks to a certain shepherd. She wondered if they would approve of her and Chase being together.

Skye teared up as she missed her father's embrace. "I missed you too, Dad."

"I heard that Arion!" Swift called out. "Don't make me extend your punishment to another day!"

Arion groaned as he let go of his daughter and joined Swift.

"Alright, our expectations are pretty high you two. You better not disappoint us." Swift let out followed by a light shove from her spouse. "Oh yeah, and make sure you get it clear with Miss Banks before the show." She added. "You know how she is with new tricks."

"Of course Mom. Don't worry, you'll be knocked right off your paws with what we have planed." Skye claimed with a sure smile.

"I hope so! This is the return of the Mighty Wings after all!" Swift added. "I expect nothing less from the both of you!"

With that, the two walk away, leaving Wings and Skye alone in the field once more. When they were sure they were gone, Wings and Skye collapsed in full laughter.

"Oh that felt sooooo good bro." Skye roared. "I could barely take it."

"Your telling me? How bout Dad losing his cool like that?!" Wings reeled. "I thought he was really going to explode!"

"Yeah, and Mom was totally speechless!" Skye said, her laughter subsiding. 'If it did that to them, imagine what I'll do to the crowd."

"Oh I have no doubt it's going to blow them far away." Wings replied, his smile then dissipates. "But we still don't have an ending."

"Well, have you thought of something?" Skye asked.

Wings let his face fall in annoyance. "If I had one, I would've said it already sis."

"Geez." Skye replied. "You didn't have to be like that. I was just asking."

"Would you stop fooling around Skye. We're gonna run out of time at this point." Wings groaned.

"I know that bro." Skye retaliated with her own annoyance. "But groaning at me and pushing me like that is not going to help."

Wings closed his eyes and sighed sadly. "I know sis. I'm just....getting a little antsy."

"It's okay Wings. To be honest, I'm getting that way too." Skye admitted. She didn't think it would be this hard to come up with a trick worthy to end their first show back together.

The truth is though, Skye did have an idea. A trick that she'd been developing in her mind since they started practicing. The only reason she hasn't spoken up, was that it was a very ambitious and dangerous trick that requires both to be at the right spot at the exact same time. If either of them was off cue, it could be disastrous.

She had a feeling that Wings wouldn't go for it, but at a time like this, it wouldn't hurt to at least try to propose.

"Actually Wings, I do have something." Skye revealed with her heartbeat slow.

"Really? Just now?" Wings responds.

"No. I've had this in my mind for a few days now." Skye said.

"Well don't be shy sis." Wings replied with bated breath.

Skye prepared herself to be batted down. "Well, it's....gonna be dangerous. Like very, dangerous."

"Skye, at this point, I'll take anything right now." Wings assured. "If it is dangerous, we're going to have to find away to make it more accessible."

With that, Skye moved forward with her proposal. "Okay, well....you know the trust falls that people do like at those group therapies or something."

Wings raised a slight eyebrow. "You mean where someone falls backwards while another catches them?"

"Yeah, that! I was thinking we could do something like that." Skye said. "Take it to the extreme."

Wings slowly craned his neck. "Really? How?"

Skye suddenly got a little excited about her idea. "Well, I'll fly straight up as high as I can, retract my wings and fall all the way down, while you start off from the end of the field and catch me at the last possible second."

Skye's nerves shook her as she waited for her brother's response. Wondering if he would go for it or not. She was pretty sure he wouldn't, but she did have a little hope.

Wings straightened his head and nodded. "Soooo.....if I may recap here. What you want to do, is shoot all the way to the sky, cut your jets, and freefall all the way back down, and the only thing stopping you from becoming a splat on the ground, is whether I can catch you in time?"

Skye inched a nervous smile as she realized just how dangerous it was. "Y-Yeah. That's it really. Wh-What do ya think?"

Wings closed his eyes and drew in a breath. "You weren't kidding Skye, It's soooo stupid."

Skye's ears lowered as her head went to her paws.

"So stupid enough to work." Wings added.

Skye shot her head up and saw a sudden smile on her brother's face. "Huh?"

"If we can pull it off, It'll be the most spectacular thing we've ever done." Wings hyped as his smile grew wider.

"You-You wanna try it?" Skye asked with surprise.

"Why not? I can't think of anything else." Wings accepted.

"But it's dangerous." Skye mentioned. "There's no way Judy's gonna go for it and Dad would have a heart attack."

"He bout died when we did the Belly Brush the first time, remember?" Wings recalled. "And as for Miss Banks, she'll let go by if we know we can pull it off. She trusts us that much."

Skye's tail started to wag. "You-You really wanna do it bro? It's so dangerous!"

Wings narrowed his eyes at his sister. "Skye, let's get dangerous."

Chase and Rocky were sitting in Ryder's office with Ryder behind his desk. His head in his hands, looking very distraught.

Not a word was spoken since Ryder told them to go to his office so they could talk. Which was something Rocky really wanted to do.

Against his own wishes, Rocky didn't say a word about his discovery when he delivered the scrap metal for the stands. Despite him being hurt for knowing the truth, he understood why it was kept secret. Mostly because he himself was in Marshall's position not a few days ago. If they would've been told about Marshall's survival and condition, Rocky knew that he himself would've overwhelmed him along with the others.

What he didn't understand, was Stacy's involvement and why Chase and Ryder were allowing it. It's painfully obvious that Stacy was keeping Marshall from them. There was no way to deny that even if you did not know who Stacy Jackson is. Rocky in fact knows who she is thanks to the articles he came across in the Adventure Bay paper. Granted he didn't read much, but from what he did, he knew Stacy was harshly critical of Ryder. He didn't really think much about it, as it was her opinion, but now, it was very relevant in his mind.

She literally pupnapped Marshall and used her unpopular opinion to justify her actions. It was so blatant; a newborn pup could put it together. So why does Chase claim that "he can't touch her?" If Ryder forcibly took Marshall back, Adventure Bay would be behind him, thanks to the obvious, so what are they waiting for?

With a sudden breath, Ryder finally spoke up, eyeing his recycling pup. "Rocky, I'm going to start by saying this. I know you must be very hurt that we haven't told you or the pups about Marshall."

Rocky sat with sincerity. "It's okay Ryder. I understand completely. Chase made it clear in his explaining."

Ryder remained unaltered. "Yeah, but that still doesn't excuse it. We both know how much Marshall means to you. So, I am very sorry we didn't tell you."

Ryder leaned forward, putting his elbows on the desk, interlocked his fingers, and rested his chin on his thumbs. "However, that doesn't justify you lying to me and leave the job."

Rocky popped an eyebrow at Ryder's sudden stern.

"Now look, I know this is the wrong time to bring it up, but it still has to be said." Ryder stated. "You know better than to just abandon us like that."

Rocky was nearly flabbergasted. "Yeah but...all we were doing was decorating....."

"I don't care what we were doing, Rocky." Ryder said, slowly shaking his head. "You still left your job. What would've happened if it did turn serious, and you were nowhere to be found?"

Rocky lowered his head to his paws. "I guess it would be bad news if you guys needed me."

"Then you understand what I'm getting at." Ryder cut clearly. He then retracted his fingers but kept his hands together. "Now, due to the circumstances, I'm going to let you slide this time, but keep this in mind, no matter how curious your mind is, don't ever abandon a mission without my say so, understand."

Rocky nodded assuring. "Yes Ryder sir."

"Good." Ryder replied. He then drew in a breath. "I do appreciate you not telling the others Rocky. To be honest, I was sure you would."

"Trust me Ryder, I am going against everything not to tell them." Rocky admitted.

"Well just so you know Rocky, I wouldn't have gotten mad at you by any means." Ryder assured. "You all should've known when we found him. I understand if you're upset with the both of us, but please don't think we really wanted to keep it from you."

Rocky gave a nod. "Like I said Ryder, I understand completely. You forget that I was sort of in Marshall's paws a few days ago. It was much for me to handle myself and I even knew who I was. Though what I don't understand is why it's taking this long to get him back from Miss Jackson. Why don't you just go get him and have it over and done with?"

Ryder interlocked his fingers again. "Because it's a little more complicated than that. Mostly due to Marshall himself."

Rocky slowly rotated. "How so?"

"As it stands right now, Marshall has no memory of us. He's gone this whole year not being called Marshall and without any of you pups and me. If we were to go over there right now and forcibly take him, he'll more than likely freak, and think were pupnapping him."

"Bur Ryder. He knows me. The minute he saw me, he knew who I was." Rocky mentioned.

"What?" Ryder perked. "He did?"

Rocky gave a quick nod as Ryder looked to his police pup. "Is it true Chase?"

Chase nodded himself, although, he looked a bit deterred. "Y-Yes Ryder sir. He recognized him almost instantly."

Rocky could hear the sadness Chase's tone as the shepherd went on. "He called him his best friend. Something I've been trying to get him to do for days."

Chase whimpered a couple while bowing his head and retracted his ears. Rocky felt sympathy for him, as he could almost relate to his sorrow.

Ryder leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. "I guess that would make sense. You've known Marshall far longer than me and Chase have. The same thing happened to you when you were shown a picture of Marshall."

"Sooo...does that mean it's safe to get him?" Rocky wagged.

Ryder looked down at his recycling pup and shook his head. "Nope, not at all Rocky."

Rocky's whole body slumped. "Wh-Why?"

"It's still very risky." Ryder replied. "Granted Marshall remembering you is a heck of a lot of progress, he could still turn on a dime on us. We need to bring him delicately and let him come over himself."

"But that could take eons Ryder." Rocky whined.

"It could, but it's the only way." Ryder added. "If we want Marshall back, that how we've got to do it or Marshall would close up on us, whether he gets his memories back or not."

Rocky lowered his head and whimpered. "I...I still don't understand..."

"Think about it like this Rocky, remember when you were still at Katie's, and you were mad at me for keeping you there?" Ryder mentioned.

Rocky raised his head. "Ye-Yeah, but that was over something completely different."

"Maybe but be honest. There was a bit where you didn't want anything to do with me right?"

Rocky lowered back in shame. "Yeah, but that was me being a complete jerk. I was mad at you because I thought that you were keeping me there on purpose, no matter what I wanted to do."

"Well imagine Marshall like that but worse. He gets dragged into something he may or may not wanted to be a part of and forced to meddle around with pups he doesn't know. Like you, he would think that we were making him adapt without his say in it. You understand now Rocky?"

Hearing it be compared to his woe, he seemed to finally grasp what Ryder was saying. He imagined Marshall, being clenched up and surrounded by pups he didn't know. Almost like he was a few days ago, in Katie's infirmary with pups that he only vaguely knew.

With that in mind, he could perceive how Marshall would react. It still didn't make complete sense though. "I-I think so. But...how do we get him to understand that were not forcing him?"

"We've got to ease him into it. Let him make the decision whether he joins the Paw Patrol." Ryder then falters a bit. "That's....what we were trying to do actually. We had a plan in place to bring him in after the airshow, but as you probably saw, we've hit a snag."

Ryder bows his head solemnly and closes his eyes. "It's my fault. I should've never done that darn interview with Stacy. I probably scared her to do something this drastic."

"Actually Ryder, I don't think it was that at all." Chase spoke up. "Stacy told me today that it was because of the fire."

Ryder rose his head with an eyebrow. "You mean the fire yesterday? What does that have to do with it?"

"When I discovered the fire, Marshall was with me." Chase began. "After I called you, he rushed into the cabin, and I had to save him."

"That's why you went in despite me telling you not to?" Ryder pressed.

"Yes sir. I had to get him before he got himself killed." Chase confirmed. "Stacy must've found out about it and acted accordingly. Remember when she threatened us?"

"Threatened?" Rocky popped. "She threatened you and Ryder?"

Chase nods to Rocky. "Yeah. She told us to not let Dally get hurt in anyway. The fire was probably what she was waiting on."

Ryder stared at Chase quaverly. "So.......he was there?"

"Yes Ryder sir. He let just before you got there." Chase said.

Ryder bowed again, clenching in dismay. "Dang it, if only if I got there sooner..." he then shook his head. "Anyway. You're undoubtably right Chase, although I still think the interview had a part in it."

"What do we do now Ryder?" Chase blubbered.

Ryder kept his head down, taking a few moments before he responded. "I.....I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?" Rocky whined. "Y-Your not giving up are you?"

"No Rocky, no. Never." Ryder sighed as he brought his hands down and looked at his pups. "I'll never give up on you pups. It's just....going to be really difficult now."

Ryder room fell silent as Ryder, Chase, and Rocky look at each other. Hoping one of them would come up with some sort of idea.

Ryder rested his head in his hands. "Look, I'll try to come up with something later. For now, were just going to have to let it be until then."

Rocky had nothing to object with and he could tell that Chase was struggling as well.

"But Ryder, what if Stacy goes further?" Chase brought up with gloom. "Wh-What if St-Stacy leaves town and ta-takes Ma-Marshall with her?"

Both Chase and Rocky whimper profusely. Rocky couldn't imagine him going on with Marshall far away and never seeing him again.

Ryder drew in a breath. "If it happens....we'll move on from there, but we still won't give up. I promise you two that Marshall will be with us eventually. It just might take a while."

Putting that aside, Rocky immediately thought of another thing that he needed to address. "What about the others Ryder? When can we finally tell Skye, Rubble, and Zuma?"

Rocky and Chase look on with bated breath. Wondering what Ryder will answer with.

Ryder looked at them again with a sure face. "At this point, it's pointless and selfish to keep it secret. We'll finally tell them after the show."

Rocky wagged in delight. He hated having such a crucial secret from them. Hearing that Marshall is alive will defiantly lift the Paw Patrol's spirit from way down.

"What's the point Ryder? It's not like their going to see him soon." Chase suddenly cut with another whine. "Everything seems so dang impossible now."

Ryder then cut a small smile to his pup. "No Chase. It's not impossible. We're just back at square one."
