Matt Helders.

The name brought a tight pain to your chest every time you heard it or thought about it.

It wasn't like it was very easy to avoid the man.

He was always the talk of the town.

Every girl wanted him.

Even you.

But of course, why would he like you?

You were his best friend but that was apparently all you'd ever be.

You shoved your hands into your pockets, letting out a breath that was visible against the cold air of winter.

You used to love winter.

It was lovely.

Back when you and the boys were kids.

You, Matt, Alex, Jamie, and Nick.

Playing around in the snow.

But now it made you think of Matt, and how much of a strong dislike you also held for yourself.

It wasn't too long ago that you had approached Matt.

You showed up at his door, and told him how you felt about him at his doorstep.

You would have waited until you could sit him down, but he wouldn't let you inside his apartment.

You didn't know why as you spoke your heart out to him.

It was just after, when he had the awkward, uncomfortable look on his face that you looked past him to see a tall, thin woman walk from around the corner, in one of Matt's shirts.

"Who is it?" her voice was so sickly sweet.

"Y/N..." Matt let out.

You shook your head, feeling sick with anxiety as you turned, and walked away from the door as fast as you could, ducking your head and never looking back.

Now, here you were, walking home a few weeks later, reminded of the situation all over again.

Your phone rang in your pocket and you plugged in your  headphone, not really wanting to hold the phone up to your cold face.

"Hello?" You said, continuing to move in the direction of your apartment.

"Hey, Y/N." Al's voice rang through the phone.

"Hey, Aly. Whatcha up to?" you asked.

"Just uh... Hanging about. Uhm. Are you going to be home tonight?" he asked.

"I heard there's a storm coming. You're damn right I'm gonna be inside." you said.

"I was just making sure." he said.

"Why?" you asked.

"I-Uh- I don't want you to get caught in the thunder, tha' knows." he said.

He sounded slightly suspicious, but you brushed it off.

"Cheers." you said.

"No problem. So, what'd you do today?" he asked.

"Walked around a bit, looked into a few jobs around." you reply.

"Sounds fun."

"Wasn't." you laugh.

"Have you eaten, already?" he asked.

"Mm, I had some toast this morning but I haven't had lunch." you tell him.

He didn't respond, and you assumed that he'd nodded, forgetting that you couldn't see him.

"Let's go get some food. I haven't eaten either, and there's a new diner on Longview." he said.

"Alright." you said, smiling at the thought of food.

Al was one of the boys you were closest to in the group.

He was one of the sweetest, with long hair and an equally adorable boyfriend named Miles.

You were actually happy to go to lunch with the shy boy.

Some good food might take your mind off of Matt for a while.

~~~
After lunch with Al, you'd began your trek back home.
It was becoming evening, and you wanted nothing more than to get inside and hide yourself away from the dark, scary clouds outside and whatever they may hold.
It had begun to sprinkle lightly outside.
You grabbed a thick blanket from the couch and moved upstairs, to go into your room.
When you got there, you jumped as you heard little clinks against your window.
You walked up to it cautiously, and glanced out of it to see the one person who had been on your mind for weeks.
Matt stood there with a guitar in his arms, his clothing already damp from the sprinkling and the snow he was standing in.
You opened your window and gazed out of it.
"What do you want?" you call out harshly.
He swallows as he looks up at you.
With a clearing of his throat, he begins to strum, badly you might add, as he sings.
"Y/N, I'm sorry..." he begins, slightly off tune.
Instantly you're attempting to battle the smile that is beginning to appear on your face.
"I got drunk that one night and slept with a stranger,"
"I didn't know how you felt,"
You were almost laughing now.
"I just want you to know, that I love yOUUUUUU! And I'm sorrYYYYYY and Please go out with mEEEe!" he screeches.
Tears find their way to your eyes.
That was absolutely fucking horrible, but it means so much to you.
He goes to sing it again and you stop him.
"I forgive you." you shout to him.
He smiles and jumps a bit.
Then, the rain increases.
"Go home, now!" you shout to him.
Just then, three bright lights flash across the sky.
Matt looked up at the sky, eyes wide.
Then, he looked at you, eyes locking.
Thunder.
It was loud and horrifying and you almost screamed at the sound of it.
"Let me in!" Matt called up to you.
You ran from the window, down your stairs, almost falling as another loud boom of thunder sounded through your thin walls.
You ran to the door, slamming it open and Matt came in quickly, setting his stuff down before you launched into his arms.
You shook along with him, but he was cold.
"I have some of your clothing still, come on." you tugged him into your room quietly.
~~~

After he'd changed, and made both of you a cup of tea, you were now both cuddled up in your bed.

You were laying against him, scooting closer every time thunder sounded.

It was getting more and more frequent.

"I need a distraction." you whimpered aloud.

"I've got one."

You looked at Matt, but right as you did, his lips met yours, and suddenly, you couldn't tell the difference between the thunder and your heart beats.

When you'd parted, he was quiet.

"Did that work?" he asked.

"Let's give it another go and find out." you mumbled.

With that, he kissed you again.

That was one of the first storms that held a positive light in your memory.

Now you knew you wouldn't be as scared of them, with Matt by your side.

And that was alright.
